No Malarkey!  Mar 7, 2022 • 11:37:20am

From previous thread: re: #480 No Malarkey!

Its one thing if Zelenskyy voluntarily makes such concessions, but if he were going to do that, he would do it now to prevent more bloodshed and destruction. There is no way he will grant official recognition to the dismemberment of his country once the Russian army is disintegrating. I am sure that Biden will not pressure Zelenskyy to surrender Ukrainian sovereignty. First, Biden has character, and second, appeasing a dictator at the expense of a heroic ally is extremely bad optics; it would provoke a storm of outrage. I would bet my bottom dollar there will be no NATO pressure on Zelenskyy to grant official territorial concessions to Russia to end the war.

So I’m playing “extreme worst case scenario” thinker here.

If Putin absolutely lost his fucking marbles and dropped a nuke on Kiev, would that pretty much guarantee someone responds with a retaliatory strike and levels Moscow?

No, because that would lead to further retaliatory strikes, and who is willing to sacrifice London, or Paris, or D.C. for Kyiv?

I think it’s a bit optimistic still to believe that Putin will not push for some face-saving measure(s). Really, if he called in Tu-160s and leveled Kyiv with tens of thousands of pounds of dumb bombs, what is the rest of the world prepared to do to stop him?

Everything they can think of short of going to war with Russia. Of course Putin is going to push for face saving measures. But Biden isn’t going to push Zelenskyy to officially recognize the dismemberment of his country. If Zelenskyy chooses to do so to stop the death and destruction, it will be up to him.

Which isn’t an American city. In your worst case scenario, the only alternative that makes it even more horrible is starting a nuclear exchange between two nuclear powers. So I would suggest not doing that. If President Biden, in careful consultation with our allies, decided to retaliate with a nuclear weapon, it should be against a military target with as few civilians in the vicinity as possible. Its never appropriate to slaughter millions of innocent civilians and potentially end civilization in the process.

Yes, translation can make for some interesting results.

Does not matter. The West would have to take out an equivalent Russian city. Otherwise you’ve just greenlighted everybody with nuclear weapons or ambitions to get at least one free shot against an enemy. How would you feel as an American if 15 million Californians got vaporized by the Russians and the world’s preeminent western nuclear power, say France, was like, “okay, we need to send a message now. Let’s nuke a silo in the Ural Mountains.”

What I find interesting is how quickly this equipment is getting to the soldiers in the field and being successfully used. Clearly there was a lot of pre-planning and training before the invasion.

Also, the Russians are currently producing only a few aircraft and armored vehicles a month. Their losses in Ukraine, plus the usual wear and tear, are going to take years to replace.

We would retaliate against the Russians, so there would be no need for France to do so.

well, yes :-), I understand that. But that’s why in that hypothetical I made France the preeminent nuclear power. I’m trying to find a hypothetical that expresses why, as sad as it may be, there would have to be an equivalent response for the initial action. I think the problem I’m having with your hypothetical is that you’re treating Kiev like it doesn’t really exist. “Oh, well, 2 million Ukrainians just got vaporized, and the fallout is gonna effectively kill everybody in Kharkiv. But hey, not us!” (And yes, I realize I’m being very flippant, and that this is not the way you would posit it). In my hypohetical, I think we would be obligated to say, “if Russia can do that, and the world effectively takes no action, Russia will never again feel any compunction to operate under the rules of Mutually Assured Destruction, which will make them an even greater danger to the rest of us.”

I still support nuclear, the newest generation of reactors can be made relatively small and incredibly safe. They can use reprocessed fuel from older generation reactors eliminating a lot of the problems with waste. It is a pick your poison thing. Long term we need to move to renewables with grid storage, but that has its limits. There will always need to be some energy generation that can relatively quickly be taken on and off line for peak situations and we need a medium term solution until the grid can be upgraded and storage solutions can be implemented. That medium term is either gas and oil or nuclear.

That is one theory. Another is that if we say to Russia, “look, we are going to nuke Moscow and murder millions of your people because you did it to Kyiv, but let’s stop it right there, OK?” We will get a big fat Nyet for an answer, then millions of Americans will die when they vaporize one of our cities, and so on and so forth until hundreds of millions of people are dead, and everyone else wishes they were. So in your worst case scenario in which Kyiv is nuked by an insane Putin, we maybe get the word out to Russians that they need to do something about him before everyone is dead, but we don’t murder millions of innocent people.

Yes it is a terrible tragedy.

According to this BBC article, 1.5 million Ukrainians have fled Ukraine in the past two weeks. That is a huge mass of people!

And yet, I am seeing estimates that the number of ‘displaced’ Ukrainians, both externally and internally could easily reach 20% of the entire population

Exactly. This is another subject where elevating the public discussion above posters and sound bites would be beneficial. We should be exploring what can be done to make it safer, and leave less problems to deal with as far as waste. If there are efficiencies to be had in these area’s by sacrificing potential profits, they need honest exploration. Even if it require tax dollars to get there.

From a respected Swedish journalist:
“The Polish military analysts OSW state that Ukraine has switched to continued resistance in certain areas, ie what we in Sweden call the free war, stay behind, resistance movement, or for that matter guerrilla war. But in Ukraine it is of course called partizani. At the same time, Putin’s National Guard, Rosgvardia, has begun clean-up operations to fight the partisans as occupiers. Incidentally, for up to ten years, Ukrainian partisans fought against the Soviet Union after World War II, something that is relatively unknown here in the West.”

I’m certain some of all the light AT and AA that is flooding into Ukraine will come to very good use in these fights.

You absolutely have to hit back. If you don’t, what’s to stop Putin from telling every other non nuclear country to surrender or he’ll nuke their capital? If Russia nukes a Ukrainian city, you drop multiple nukes on whatever city Putin is in to make sure you get him.

Having been diagnosed with EBV back in the early 1980s (via a blood test), I am fascinated by this article which completely upends everything I was told about EBV at the time.
The Puzzling Virus That Infects Almost Everyone

Statistically speaking, the virus known as Epstein-Barr is inside you right now. It is inside 95 percent of us. It spreads through saliva, so perhaps you first caught the virus as a baby from your mother, who caught it as a baby from her mother. Or you picked it up at day care. Or perhaps from a friend with whom you shared a Coke. Or the pretty girl you kissed at the party that cold New Year’s Eve.

If you caught the virus in this last scenario—as a teen or young adult—then Epstein-Barr may have triggered mono, or the “kissing disease,” in which a massive immune response against the pathogen causes weeks of sore throat, fever, and debilitating fatigue. For reasons poorly understood but not unique among viruses, Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, hits harder the later you get it in life. If you first caught the virus as a baby or young child, as most people do, the initial infection was likely mild, if not asymptomatic. Unremarkable. And so this virus has managed to fly under the radar, despite infecting almost the entire globe. EBV is sometimes jokingly said to stand for “everybody’s virus.” Once inside the body, the virus hides inside your cells for the rest of your life, but it seems mostly benign.

Except, except. In the decades since its discovery by the virologists Anthony Epstein and Yvonne Barr in 1964, the virus has been linked not only to mono but also quite definitively to cancers in the head and neck, blood, and stomach. It’s also been linked, more controversially, to several autoimmune disorders. Recently, the link to one autoimmune disorder got a lot stronger: Two separate studies published this year make the case—convincingly, experts say—that Epstein-Barr virus is a cause of multiple sclerosis, in which the body mistakenly attacks the nervous system. “When you mentioned the virus and MS 20 years ago, people were like, Get lost … It was a very negative attitude,” says Alberto Ascherio, an epidemiologist at Harvard and a lead author of one of those studies, which used 20 years of blood samples to show that getting infected with EBV massively increases the risk of developing multiple sclerosis. The connection between virus and disease is hard to dismiss now. But how is it that EBV causes such a huge range of outcomes, from a barely noticeable infection to chronic, life-altering illness?

more in the article at the link.

I am seriously, oh…

Aren’t the Chinese still trying to get the Russians onto their CIPS payment system? That is their alternative to the Swift payment system that the russians got blocked from as part of the sanctions. To me that indicates they are perfectly willing to take Russian money. Even if it costs them in the short run it could help their long term goals of challenging the US dollar as a reserve currency.

Russia has long seen itself as protector of the Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire, especially the Eastern Christians (Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East, etc), who faced persecution, ethnic cleansing, and genocide at the hands of the Ottomans, just like Russia similarly performed ethnic cleansing and genocide against several Muslim groups in the European parts of Russia.

Zoë Kravitz’s DC debut is long overdue, it seems. Though she’s currently making waves as Selina Kyle and her Catwoman alter ego in Matt Reeves’s The Batman, the actress says she was passed over for a role in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Kravitz, who is biracial, tells the Observer she was turned down for an audition because she was considered to be too “urban.”

Zoë Kravitz was told she was too ‘urban’ to audition for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (Yahoo News)

Remembering that everything has been carefully curated by Ukrainian Intelligence. Nonetheless, this, at least so far, seems likely accurate:

This invasion has been one of the biggest clusterfucks in the history of warfare. One would think that there will be very senior generals getting lined up against the wall soon.

SCOTUS has rejected the GOP’s argument that legislatures are free to engage in illegal gerrymandering without state judicial interference, ensuring fair maps in N.C. and Pennsylvania.

This one actually surprises me a little bit.

re: #224 Eclectic Cyborg

This one actually surprises me a little bit.

Not me ( though I suppose any precedential decision by THIS hackish disgrace of a SCOTUS is cause for surprise), the basic argument in the GOP’s appeal of the redistricting cases rested on the *novel* doctrine that State Courts (up to and including the SC level) have (State Constitutionally notwithstanding) no authority to rule on Congressional redistricting plans. That basically (again ignoring purely “State” law), any districting plan a [GOP] Legislature comes up with MUST be implemented unaltered because reasons….
A step too far even for this SC…

On the subject of Republican criminals, it would be efficient to round up everyone who got a political pardon from Trump. Surely they have all committed new crimes not covered by their pardons by now.

But that arsehole decided to reply.

Why was I disappointed?

Because I was astounded that anybody could agree with Steve’s maximalist theory of nuclear deterrence — “anybody nukes anywhere and everybody will nuke back”.

This is nuts. It’s schoolyard boasting.

If Pakistan uses tactical nukes against an Indian tank attacks then the UK should nuke Islamabad? (Replace any and all countries/cities in this fantasy to taste).

Countries have nukes to deter attacks against *them*.

NATO aims to extend this “umbrella” to all member countries*, but has never stated that it will retaliate against attacks on third parties.

Putin nuking a city or two in Ukraine out of spite as his conventional war fails is the kind of thing that should be maximally deterred.

I would be most disappointed if back channel US and Western diplomacy weren’t already making it excruciatingly clear to Putin that any attempt by him to nuke his way out of his problems in Ukraine will not work for him.
