Lawmakers will question Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on March 22 as the Senate Judiciary Committee continues its Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court. After opening statements from Jackson, her colleagues and the senators March 21, senators will spend two days questioning Jackson at length about her rulings and judicial philosophy. On the final day of the hearings March 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear from friends and colleagues of Jackson about her temperament and approach to the law.

re: #1 Backwoods_Sleuth
Just don’t take prisoners in the time of war.

‘What does it matter when it goes back to? We had them, and they got loose and they started killing people. If you’re one of the people killed in 2005, does it matter to you when we released them?

‘I’m suggesting the system has failed miserably and advocates to change the system, like she was advocating, would destroy our ability to protect this country. We;re at war, we’re not fighting a crime. This is not some passage of time event.

‘As long as they’re dangerous, I hope they all die in jail if they’re going to go back and kill Americans,’ Graham said, starting to raise his voice.

‘It won’t bother me one bit if 39 of them die in prison,’ he continued. ‘That’s a better outcome than letting them go.’

‘And if it costs $500 million to keep them in jail, keep them in jail. Because they’re going to go back to the fight. Look at the fricken Afghan government that’s made up of former detainees at Gitmo. This whole thing by the left about this war ain’t working.’

At this point, Graham turned off his microphone, grabbed his water bottle and stormed out of the room.

Recall the state-appointed defense lawyer at one of Stalin’s show trials getting up and explaining that because of the heinous nature of the crimes his client had committed, there was no defense that he could offer.

Would that sort of Gitmo Justice be okay with Dick LIckin’ Lindsey or is even that a “waste of taxpayers’ money”?

Is Lindsey’s histrionics entirely because Michelle Childs was passed over, or does he also have some other reason?

No, he’s just pissed because Biden didn’t appoint his nominee. I imagine there’s a little bit that’s triggered because of her status as a public defender, because again, that’s apparently a garbage profession that only evil people go to perform.

It was the 14th amendment’s citizenship clause that overturned Dred Scott.

My guess is that Biden passing over the SC candidate is just the excuse- presumably if Childs had been the nominee, he’d be smarmily obsequious, but otherwise he can just posture away for the RE/GOP media as usual: he probably doesn’t GAS..

Anchorage Daily News: “Under the tentative plan, the special primary election will be June 11, and the special general election will take place Aug. 16 — the same date as the state’s regular primary election.”

“Because of the short timeframe to organize and hold the special primary in June, the Division of Elections plans to conduct a by-mail election, which state law allows in special votes. Every registered Alaska voter would be mailed a ballot — a similar process to the one used by Anchorage for its local elections.”

Lawsuit Says Armed Pro-Trump Canvassers Are Going Door-To-Door With Big Lie ‘Intimidation’

The suit accuses the U.S. Election Integrity Plan, which organized the canvassers, and three of its leaders of violating the Voting Rights Act through “intimidating, threatening and coercive conduct,” often in neighborhoods with a high number of people of color. It asks the court to declare the canvassing intimidation and harassment, and to order it stopped.

The canvassers often display badges, the lawsuit says, and are encouraged to carry weapons. They confront voters “for allegedly casting fraudulent ballots” and take photos of people’s homes, according to the suit.

The group uses such tactics across Colorado and in several other states, the suit says. It was founded by supporters of former President Donald Trump after he lost the 2020 election and began spreading his widely debunked lies about election fraud. Funders, according to the suit, include MyPillow guy Mike Lindell, a prominent promoter of Trump’s bogus claims.

“Defendants’ objectives are clear,” the suit says. “By planning to, threatening to, and actually deploying armed agents to knock on doors throughout the state of Colorado, USEIP is engaging in voter intimidation.”

So: hopefully some of that $436M can be diverted to a retirement fund for Jimmy Carter??

Jimmy Carter is probably like Charles Schultz: One he stops doing what he loves, he won’t last much longer.

I’m thinking Carter is trying to stay alive long enough to see the eradication of Guinea worm disease, which has been a Carter Center project for years now. (And they’re getting close—only 15 provisional cases reported in 2021!)

First James Webb Space Telescope Images “Exceed Expectations”

re: #202 jaunte

Subtext: He’s asking if “new rights” apply to women, gay people, and trans people.

i think the entire idea of ‘new rights’ is dangerous.

Philosophers and lawyers bicker about what grounds human rights. Do we acknowledge them and use government power to protect against their violation simply because we have a history of doing it? Or does a right just pop into existence as soon as a certain number of human beings clamors for getting a law passed in its name?

Danger says no:

No one is ‘granted’ extra/new human rights.

What changes is governments start to support the enforcement of allowing people to exercise rights they always had - and were unable to exercise because they were repressed, or went unquestioned/unrecognized.

Civil rights weren’t ‘new’ rights granted to Blacks. those rights were always there. Because these types of rights are are intrinsic, though their exercise may be suppressed / repressed by others.

I submit the *human* right to marry is not limited to a (white) man and a (white) woman. though it’s easier to understand how the evolution of the legal status of marriage happened, it doesnt make it true, right, correct, natural or the only way.

People started to push back and question the limits on it. *Then* it became an active, repressive legal fight. Though the right is intrinsic.
