Chris Thile and Punch Brothers with Noam Pikelny, Chris Eldridge, Gabe Witcher and Paul Kowert perform Gordon Lightfoot and Tony Rice’s “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on March 3, 2022 at the Orpheum Theater in Boston, MA. Brought to you by Less Than Face Productions.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship’s bell rang
Could it be the north wind they’d been feelin’?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too
T’was the witch of November come stealin’
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashin’
When afternoon came it was freezin’ rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin’
“Fellas, it’s too rough to feed ya”
At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said
“Fellas, it’s been good to know ya”
The captain wired in he had water comin’ in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they’d have made Whitefish Bay
If they’d put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man’s dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the maritime sailors’ cathedral
The church bell chimed ‘til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early

So Trumpsters have been crowing about Hunter’s laptop for days now, talking about how the MSM and their factcheckers have been totally discredited.

Could someone provide a brief summary of the latest information (?misinformation) concerning this saga?

Not really. It’s the usual devil’s brew of non-sequiturs, ill conceived logic and arguments by assertions.

They have nothing else. So desperate to deny the reality of Trump’s badness, they seek anything, literally anything, to jump on.

I have no idea what could possibly ever come of discovering a lap top which has not already been reviewed by prosecutors with no attempt to prosecute.

This is a rerun of Hillary’s emails. Because the mob have been trained like dogs to salivate now at “emails”, anything that may have an email involved gets them drooling.

It is right wing bullshit, top to bottom and side to side. We’ll never get anywhere in this country politically as long as the mainstream media has pushing this crap as damn near its only fucking job.

Maybe I’m just a bit on the jaded side. But I found the tempo they were using was way to fast for the song/ballad.

I have a terrible ear for song lyrics. E.g., for the longest time I heard “peg leg” called Gitchee gummee instead of “big lake” in this.

A bit? And after watching it again, it seems like they were trying for a Irish/Scottish ballad tempo instead of a slower American/Canadian tempo and for the most part succeeded.

Nice version of the Edmund Fitzgerald…thanks Charles.

Looks like the wife’s Model 3 is in the shop for at least 3-4 weeks…she bent the frame when she bumped it. So rent a car for a month or call Tesla and see about starting a second lease? This car goes back in October so it makes sense just to double up as we have a charger. Meantime I put a deposit down on a Rivian though they are back ordered to January.

re: #2 Hecuba’s daughter

once you buy the premise that HB took a broken laptop/computer equipment on a plane (because California has no computer repair shops?) across the country and then walked into some rando strip mall in Delaware to have it repaired without remembering that he had done so and that said repair shop had it sitting on their shelves for a certain number of months until they remembered that they had it and who exactly HB was and then examined it by a technician who is legally blind (per the testimony of his co-workers) and then discovered that there were some e-mails of dubiousness on said machine without notifying either local law enforcement, the FBI or even the purported owner and instead had it find its way into the hands of Rudy Guiliani, well then if that sounds plausible to you… then really is anything else that’s woven into the tale going to be a deal-breaker for you?

Good bluegrass audience…knew when to stay quiet and let the single microphone do its work. I love when bands go old school like this. I’ve seen outside shows with 5,000 people and it’s quiet as a church as the band takes turns approaching the mic for instrument solos. Such a great experience.

IANAL, but can somebody here who is a lawyer or at least watches a bunch of lawyer shows on TV explain to me how “Hunter Biden’s Laptop” is admissible evidence in a court of law?

It doesn’t exist (and no the NYT Article never said it did) so it’s not. They’ve been fucking this chicken for over a year now and not once has even a picture of it been shown. Half the time they can’t decide if it one laptop or two, where it came from, or if it’s just a hard drive.

It doesn’t exist. All they have are emails from somewhere, that Hunter Biden said are real, that completely torpedo the whole narrative on it.

The Punch Brothers visited Power Hall in St. Louis in January and I had front row centered seats. Only about 10 feet separated us. The acoustics were glorious.

On this song the mic dropped out and they didn’t miss a bit but simply moved to the end of the stage. It was absolutely incredible. I like to imagine they have some guy running the sound that messes with mic to see the reaction.

This was the best concert i’ve ever attended.

This USMC doc explains why they aren’t attacking Ukrainian cities with troops. Keep in mine the Russian Army uses a “push” system of supply. That requires they have the right mix of supplies already on the road before the battle starts. They didn’t, and still don’t.

MCWP 3-35.3
MILITARY OPERATIONS ON URBANIZED TERRAIN (MOUT)

Historically, combat in urban environments has seen a dramatic
increase in the amounts of Class IV (shoring, sandbags, concertina wire), Class V
(ammunition), and Class VIII (medical material). Unique items, such as rope, grappling
hooks, and ladders are required for operations on urbanized terrain. Intense close quarter combat requires a continuous flow of ammunition, particularly small-arms, tank, antitank, mortar, and artillery ammunition, as well as mines, grenades, and demolition explosives.
Medical supplies must be readily available to treat the anticipated increase in casualties.
Once battle the has been initiated, combat forces will require continuous supply.
Urban warfare requires a flexible, balanced logistics system capable of sustaining the
close-quarter fighting evolutions within the built-up area.
One method of providing continuous logistics support is to establish a “push system.”
Essentially, this system pushes supplies to fighting units without their having to request
them. A “push system” should negate the inherent delays of a “pull system,” which
requires units to request supplies then await their arrival. Optimally however, a balanced
approach should be taken to sustain engaged forces (MCDP 4.). Combat service support, in terms of its timeliness and anticipation of the true needs of the combat units, should sustain the tempo of operations. It should avoid the delivery of unwanted or unnecessary supplies. To achieve this balanced approach, logisticians must develop flexible support plans that readily adapt to the ebb and flow of urban combat.

The fact that the laptop has been “authenticated” is being pushed hard to cover up the reality that it remains (over a year later) a total nothingburger. The actual contents of the laptop were so uninteresting or inspiring of sympathy for Hunter that the MAGAts had to create fantasies about “child porn” or “blackmail material” that allegedly was on the laptop but has never turned up to insist that there was a “conspiracy” to keep it hidden from the public.

As far as I’ve been able to tell with what I could stomach looking into this, the “laptop” (whatever it may actually be) hasn’t even been authenticated. Several emails that ‘someone’ got from RussianHackers the FSB ‘somewhere’ have been authenticated as actual emails from Hunter Biden’s Rosemont Seneca email address and Burisma. There’s no evidence of impropriety or wrong doing, in fact they contain the exact opposite of that. The Wingnuts ranting and the horseshit out of the NYPost is basically another “Bill Barr’s summary of the Mueller Report” type of thing. In other words completely fake bullshit.

True provenance? Unknown. The shop’s never been able to prove that Hunter or anyone associated with him dropped it off, and the man who copied the HDD and turned it over to Guiliani has given contradictory accounts of how it came into his possession.

The New York Post says the laptop was turned over to the DOJ in response to a grand jury subpoena, hence the claims by MAGAts that the DOJ was “hiding” it from the public. What remains is the “copy” of the HDD given to Giuliani, of which only a few emails have been “authenticated” as coming from an email address owned by Hunter Biden.

Giuliani (or Bannon, I can’t remember which of the two at the moment) claims to have it in hand. It’s *literally* never been seen. No photos. The few emails from it I have seen were obviously retyped too and were not originals or screen shots.

Long and short of it is that, over a year later and despite all sorts of investigations into it, the authenticity of Hunter Biden’s alleged laptop remains unresolved. Saying a few emails came from email accounts he owns does not do more than say that the emails came from somebody with access to those accounts. The alleged “blackmail material” remains elusive, as does anything resembling evidence that Hunter or his dad engaged in criminal acts.

We’re just supposed to take it on faith that the laptop exists, that the whole of the HDD contents are authentic, and that the files we’ve never been show are enough to put one or both men in jail if ever a “serious” investigation into them is conducted.

The Russian advance has basically hit the high water mark. Absent some major shift in their fortunes that allows them to address their supply issues, they cannot continue to advance and even holding actions are perilous at best. I see no reason for Putin to stop. The Russian military can just dig in. They don’t need to go any farther right now.

“Liberating” the eastern portions of Ukraine from “nazis” is enough to celebrate and keep up his propaganda effort aimed at his own people.

If Russia keeps the territory they now occupy liberated, what will happen in the coming months or years?

Do you think the nations of the world will keep up a boycott over that much time?

Many nations need to trade with Russia, if for nothing else than for fossil fuel products.

What if Putin can cling on expecting many nations to simply tire of the issue.

Americans certainly will. Come the election in the fall I suspect that the Ukraine will not be a campaign issue, if the war simply drags on in some sort of stasis.

“the russian military can just dig in.” How? They’ve got continuously resupplied Ukrainian special forces and drones, plus artillery, ambushing them daily. They have no good resupply, because they’ve already committed their best troops and are down to indentured servitude and some syrians hoping to use the opportunity to emigrate illegally into Poland. In WWI, my understanding from somewhere—may have been a sports message board, so confirm for yourself— was that Germany was effectively winning the war through most of 1917, but ultimately lost because they were running out of materiel and gambled on a big push that resulted in devastating losses. You just can’t stay on a war footing forever as an attacker, whereas the defenders can because hey, where are they gonna go? They’re already home.

We’re just supposed to take it on faith that the laptop exists, that the whole of the HDD contents are authentic, and that the files we’ve never been show are enough to put one or both men in jail if ever a “serious” investigation into them is conducted.

this nonsense along with giuiliani, the my pillow idiot, even TFG himself.
even limbaugh promised, teased, hinted, blockbuster news coming!!!, and then almost always by the time his show was over, had said nothing.

they can never actually reveal anything

first, it would be subject to scrutiny
second, the grift would be over

by always promising - in two weeks.., soon, whatever, meanwhile, alleging and accusing and charging, but never proving, they can continue to lead em by the nose and milk em for more $

it’s basic, standard con

What’s freaking me out is the number of concerts and other huge public gatherings going on all over the place with nary a mask in sight. I am seeing this more and more. And, personally, I wouldn’t even consider going to a restaurant. Who knows when the next variant will come out that will completely evade the vaccines. I get people are tired of the pandemic but it is hardly tired of us.

I wouldn’t go to an indoor concert given current conditions and that a still insufficient number of people aren’t fully vaccinated and boosted. The Mrs and I are boosted, and we mask indoors. That said, we did go out to a restaurant for the first time in months for a lunch - making sure that the place was well ventilated and patrons were spaced out. We were also eating in a place with high vaccination rates and low spread at the moment, so the risk was lower.

It’s going to be case by case, and we’ll see spikes in and around the country where vaccination rates are lagging and people congregate indoors.

Grace Place Church of God by Faith is located in Clayton, County, Georgia, a predominantly Black community. As of today, only about 46% of its 292,000 residents are fully vaccinated. But thanks to the determined efforts of a local pastor, more than 90% of his parishioners are fully vaccinated—and not one has died from COVID-19.

Grace Place’s Pastor Wayne Mack is not your usual community activist. He’s not in the streets protesting, signing petitions, or writing letters to his local lawmakers. But when COVID-19 was just a blip on the map in China in Feb. 2020, Mack addressed it straight-on using science and scripture to warn his congregants of what he was convinced was coming and to protect them from getting sick or dying.

Mack says everything started when his wife, Michelle, began watching a documentary about the 1918 Spanish flu. At around 20 minutes in, he says, he realized that COVID-19 was coming to the U.S. There were no recorded cases at that time, but he knew from watching that it was fast heading from China to America. That’s when he began to spread the word.

It’s great that he’s gotten almost everyone vaccinated. It’s sad that the rest of the county is so low.

On March 9, the Kingsland Branch Library in Llano County, Texas, lost a librarian. Suzette Baker told KXAN that she was fired for not complying with top-down directives to remove books from the library’s shelves. The termination letter sited Baker “for creating a disturbance, insubordination, violation of policies and failure to follow instructions.”

“The books in my library in Kingsland were not taken off the shelves, we did not move them, I told my boss that was censorship,” Baker told KXAN. One of the books that was deemed “inappropriate” and/or “pornographic” was a biography depicting the life of a woman “growing up as a transgendered teenager and obviously this group thought that was too much for their children to read.” Of course, as Baker and others have pointed out, no one is making your kids read anything. More importantly, public libraries are all about the freedom of information.

Canada should impose tougher sanctions on Russia:

- Three vaccines: 82% agree.

- Vaccine refusers: 75% disagree.

So telling. #Antivaxx mindset shaped by ideology, misinformation, and in-group signalling.

26 percent of unvaccinated people in Canada believe Russia invading Ukraine is justified.

2 percent of vaccinated people in Canada believe the same.

More evidence antivaxx communities are evolving into general pro-authoritarian spaces.

There’s been rumors that Ukraine has given China pause about trying to take over Taiwan. The biggest reason Ukraine has been successful has been their willingness to fight. The second is the supplies pouring in from western countries. But I suspect that one of the reasons that China might be wary is that Ukraine’s military discipline has been a result of the military training they received from the US since 2014. We might be a bit bloated militarily, but we still know how to fight.

I was talking with a coworker about the corruption we’re seeing in Russian military spending, how much of it got siphoned off to generals and oligarchs, producing shoddy equipment. That is still one big difference between Russia and us. Our spending might be more than it should be, but at the end of the day, you still get a proper bolt out of our military manufacturing, and not a piece of wood carved into a bolt and painted silver.

(I think the corruption Trump would have brought in could have ended up changing that.)

In addition the last major combat the Chinese faced was against Vietnam in 1979 and the veterans of the PAV & ARVN combined to kick their asses to the point where the PLA was forced to declare “victory” and leave. The Army probably has no veterans that remember that embarrassment, but the leadership does. The could see that happening again all too easily especially when looking at the Russian experience in Ukraine.

Similar issue. Some people reported the problem disappeared with the last iOS update but I am on 15.4 now (on an iPhone 13) and nothing changed. It seems to be just YouTube embeds. Video in tweets, for example, is fine.

What I get is a completely blank space of the correct dimensions where the embedded video should be. There is no interactivity inside the blank space. The same behaviour happens in Safari, Chrome, and Edge.

Same here, but if I reload the post (not the page), the “larger” button becomes live, and I can click on it, or clock-hold and copy the link.

LOL, I was just thinking the same thing when I read that post.

It’s the same deal with all the “moderate” Republicans I know: George obviously gets that the GOP is down a dark, probably irreversible path, yet he probably continues to vote straight Republican every time he’s at the polls. Serious Dark Falcon “I must vote Republican because my ancestors did, regardless of how horrible the current crop is” energy.

I’ve got the same problem with Michael Smerconish, who my “independent” buddy worships. I mean, it’s great Smerconish put his money where his mouth was in 2008 and voted Obama, but the dude still has at least one book he wrote where he openly endorses racial profiling at airports.

Best of my knowledge, he’s never repudiated that. Maybe I’m wrong, but guys like Smerconish tend to want all the regressive policies the GOP supports, but since they’re not foaming at the mouth, they’re somehow the middle ground the US should be aiming for.

re: #217 Belafon

What do we know about Durant and Britt?

Considering they are Alabama Republicans, we should be able to safely make a few assumptions.

/

Durant:

Senate candidate Michael Durant, in stories reported by the Associated Press, publicly accused his sister of lying about years of sexual abuse at the hands of their father despite telling his sister in letters that their father had admitted to the abuse.

The stories, first reported by AP in the mid-1990s following Durant’s release from captivity as a prisoner of war in Somalia and at a time when he became a national figure, were widely disseminated and appeared in numerous newspapers across the country.

Durant’s sister, Mary Durant, filed a federal civil lawsuit against their father, Leon Durant, in New Hampshire in 1994. In that filing, Mary Durant accused her father of sexually assaulting her from the time she was a toddler until she was 19. The lawsuit stated that the assaults on Mary Durant occurred “almost daily” between the ages of 14 and 17.

When interviewed on a TV news show in 1994, Michael Durant claimed that his sister was only trying to “grab headlines” by suing their father for $5 million. He also said his father “isn’t the monster” he was made out to be by Mary Durant, and that he was “a good father.”

Britt:

Former President Donald Trump didn’t plan to invite Alabama Senate hopeful Katie Britt to meet with him at Mar-a-Lago this month. He already had his man in the race — conservative firebrand Mo Brooks — and wasn’t keen on endorsing a second candidate, despite briefly considering it amid frustrations with Brooks’ dull performance so far.

But then Trump got to talking with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick at his annual Super Bowl party, and their conversation turned to the contentious GOP primary in Alabama.

“Belichick coached Wesley Britt and said positive things about the couple when they got to talking about the race,” said a person familiar with their conversation. (Katie Britt’s husband spent four years as an offensive lineman for New England.)
Days later, Trump invited Katie Britt to visit him at his Palm Beach estate while she was in town for a donor event with other MAGA-aligned candidates. Politico was first to report their meeting last week.

i absolutely hate these fucking pictures. it’s like some kind of required cliche, that any discussion of vaccines comes with somebody being injected, with a look of pain on their faces. There is absolutely nothing painful about getting jabbed with the pfizer or moderna vaccines. they’re tiny little needles. i imagine taking the rabies shot multiple times in the abdomen is not great, but honestly, people even do that on the off chance they got bitten by something rabid.

These days rabies vaccination means four shots in the arm (once a week for four weeks), and the side effects are not notably worse than for other vaccinations.

So, the government has had to admit that Pence was taken to an underground loading dock as he was retreating from the Capitol due to the storming of the Capitol by Trump’s treasonweasel insurrectionists.

The government had been trying to keep that secret since it lets people know where/how Secret Service operates and rally points that future terrorists might try to take advantage of.

When are they going to get rid of DeJoy?

I ordered a used DVD from a Goodwill in Colorado thru Amazon. On the 16th (the day I placed the order), the tracking info said that a third party (OSM WORLDWIDE) picked up the package from the Goodwill store. The package did not arrive at the third party facility in Illinois until the 21st. It left that facility the same day. In all the tracking info at USPS the USPS are clear that they have not received the package nor to the recognize any shipping date.

I assume that using OSM WORLDWIDE to take my package on a tour of the mid-west benefits a DeJoy crony.

The reason this information was released was because that was a secure and restricted area and the 1/6 insurrectionist’s presence in that restricted area was a crime. It’s uncontested that this particular defendant was in that area.

In the US, the post office is constitutionally required. Congress is required to provide for it. Privatization would suck something fierce, and we’d see rates soar for rural areas (which would hasten their emptying to urban areas?). It’s far more costly to run mail to rural areas than densely populated urban areas. But the US made a decision to have the same rate regardless of location. Privatization would likely change that to a distance based model, which would hike costs for those in rural areas.

Graham’s questioning Brown Jackson’s religious views - to fairly adjudicate religious issues.

Graham can fuck the right off.

Once again, GOPers are trying to settle scores from the past three nominations - where unqualified hacks, right wing extremists lacking character and judgment, were rushed through the process, but GOP wants to slow this process down as much as possible and smear Brown Jackson to get sound bites for Fox and other right wing outfits.

It’s a smear campaign.

More importantly, public libraries are all about the freedom of information.

from today’s electoral-vote.com

This is, in many ways, the worst kind of political theater. The senators appear, to the casual observer, to be doing their jobs and vetting the candidate. But anyone reading this site knows that, at most, there are four senators whose votes are in question: Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). And even that list may be too long. Further, because none of that quartet is actually on the Judiciary Committee, their votes are likely not being swayed by the testimony given during the hearings. It would save everyone a lot of time and effort if those four just went to lunch with Jackson at the Olive Garden, and figured out if she has at the support of at least two of them.

but that’s no good because there are too many senators who want to bloviate for the cameras

some who simply dont care how stupid they make themselves look (hawley)

oh, and some who are already running for president and so… oh wait, that’s just bloviate again

A UK woman’s hand was left looking like a cartoon shark head after doctors sewed the appendage inside her stomach to fight a vicious infection. A video chronicling her Jaws-dropping mitt currently boasts over 75 million views on TikTok.

“I wasn’t aware my hand was going to look like a shark’s head till it had actually been released from my abdomen,” said Sadie Kemp, 34, of her bizarre affliction, the Mirror reported.

In the video, which she did “not expect to go viral,” the 34-year-old Petersborough native can be seen making her Megalodon-esque mitt “hum” the “Jaws” theme before dunking it in a bowl of water.

Governor Spitzer was unavailable for comment.

New York’s business elite was left shaking in its boots Tuesday after a list of alleged clients of the student prostitute in the Sarah Lawrence ‘sex cult’ case was inadvertently published online.

The list, which was entered into evidence under seal in the trial of accused cult leader Larry Ray, includes lawyers and businessmen and socialites throughout the Tri-state area.

dailymail.com acquired a copy of the list of 121 names which was taken down nearly as fast as it was put up.

A top executive at The Gap clothing firm and her husband was one of two married couples included. A former New York State Supreme Court judge is also named.

Another alleged client is a painter who has studios in Manhattan’s East Village and in Italy. A third is an architect, famous for designing college and university buildings.

Other names include a hedge fund manager who has donated millions to charity and has his name on a museum building in New York, a Washington DC, lobbyist who has worked for a foreign resistance movement and an international diamond dealer.

Also included is an executive at the Metropolitan Transit Authority, an account executive at Amazon and a veteran travel writer.

TBF, you can’t exactly hang this on DeJoy, as odious as he is; USPS has been using third-party shippers (such as UPS and FedEx) for packages between hubs (especially cross-country) for many years and taking over from the local USPS hub to your mailbox/door.

I know that but when packages are shipped this way they start out as a UPS or Fed Ex package (at least in my experience) and do so because they are being delivered in a rural area. I don’t live in a rural area. If you didn’t read the fine print of the tracking info, you’d really not know it was being handled by a third party. There’s just something about this particular shipment that’s bugging me (as you can all see).

About a month ago, I ordered a used DVD that came from Maine. It was put directly into the USPS, and I arrived in my mailbox (in the Seattle area) in 3 or 4 days. I routinely get first class mail from my dad in central PA in 3 or 4 days.

The only question reporters should ask Republicans after today is if they’re aware that they’re embarrassments to their professions.

The original point of democracy was that they didn’t all have to be super-smart lawyers, that anybody and everybody could be a good representative or executive… but we ended up choosing absolute morons for a distressing number of positions.

Ukraine is doing democracy better than we do. Their president is a comedian (and Dancing With the Stars winner), the mayor of their largest city is a boxer (never knocked out, not even any blows to the head, no brain damage on this guy)…
