The GOP has been successful of late in its Culture Wars counteroffensive (using CRT as a ploy to ban any sort of odious teach material was a stroke of evil genius) but I think that taking on Disney to make a point about “corporate wokeism” is a bridge too far on their part.

Chinese man gets over 4 years in prison for pandemic fraud (AP via MSN)

Ma, 38, was arrested in May 2020 by federal authorities who said he had applied to at least five banks to try to get over $20 million in government-guaranteed loans from the Paycheck Protection Program and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. Both programs were designed for businesses harmed by coronavirus shutdowns.

Authorities said he falsely claimed to be paying hundreds of employees millions of dollars in wages through two companies he controlled. To support the claims, he submitted fraudulent bank, tax, insurance and payroll records and provided banks with links to websites that described the companies as “global,” prosecutors said.

In fact, they said, Ma at the time was working alone out of his $1.5 million Manhattan condominium, falsely claiming that one of his companies was representing New York state and was helping then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo to procure COVID-19 test kits and personal protective equipment for frontline workers.

Seems like a really upstanding guy.

Here’s all the gory detail about CNN+’s shutdown.:

Warner Bros. Discovery has billions in debt, much of which is a result of the deal to combine the company, and executives are under pressure to find $3 billion in savings that Wall Street is expecting from them.
The executive vice president in charge of CNN+ and all of CNN’s digital businesses, Andrew Morse, who worked closely with Kilar and Zucker, will depart the company after a transition period.
In a note to employees, Morse described his nine years at CNN as an “incredible ride” and said, “As the company enters an exciting period of change, it’s clear that the vision the new leadership has for the future is different than the one we’ve had. That’s OK. That’s all part of change.”
Licht said in the town hall that he wanted Morse to stay, but respected the decision.
Alex MacCallum, the head of product and general manager of CNN+, will run CNN Digital and work with Licht “to determine a leadership strategy going forward,” the company said in a press release.
The decision to shut down CNN+ just weeks after it launched marked a stunning end to the streaming news service. Executives had touted the application as the most significant launch since Ted Turner founded CNN in 1980.

I grew up in Michigan. I’ve lived in Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska (both liberal Omaha and conservative here), Oklahoma, and (briefly) California (SF).

So why is it in all those places the Taliban can be compared to some Christians? Or maybe it isn’t about “shitty parts of the country.”

It is about shitty parts of the country. It’s unfortunate that you’re weren’t lucky enough to live where I’ve lived. You don’t seem to grasp that you’re attacking American Christians as a whole because of your hatred for your local Christians, when you compare the Taliban to them, which I expect is offensive to Christians here. Perrette and incoming CNN CEO Chris Licht notified staffers of the decision in a meeting on Thursday afternoon. Licht bluntly told employees it was a “uniquely shitty situation.”

Hundreds of CNN+ staffers may lose their jobs. Licht said in an internal memo that “all CNN+ employees will continue to be paid and receive benefits for the next 90 days to explore opportunities at CNN, CNN Digital and elsewhere in the Warner Bros. Discovery family.”

Staffers who aren’t absorbed elsewhere in the company will receive a minimum of six months of severance, he added.

It is not about shitty parts of the country. Every single state has authoritarian Christians trying to take away everyone else’s rights.

I grew up Catholic but was spared the worst of American fundamentalism, and aside from being annoyed by the Campus Crusade for Christ ninnies, never had any really negative experiences with Christianity as a result of being atheistic, agnostic, or epileptic.

I include the latter as a reference to really traumatic experiences that one of our esteemed members and posters has had to endure.

We know that may be true for earlier variants but I don’t think the data is in on omicron, especially for those who are vaccinated and boosted. My impression (may be mistaken) was that almost all in the study were infected before vaccinations were widely available.

In his experiences he has learned to be wary of large organizations and groups. Particularly those who view his non-conformity, being in an outgroup, and his independence as a threat.

But I can tell when he is very stressed or very tired because the conversations tend to go into a specific direction.

In describing his concerns he irritates members here whose identity involves membership in one of the groups he views as threatening.

Happily for us here, after a period to de-stress, he tends to bounce back and again be the very prolific and positive contributor here.

And, I am very glad that both he and those he clashes with are all forgiving of our human foibles.

This continued conversation reminds me of the pinned tweet on StoneKettle’s timeline. Perhaps we can find something comfortably and amicably similar.

The President is the Head of State, and the Prime Minister is the Head of the Government. In some countries like this, the Presidency would be a purely ceremonial position, but that does not appear to be the case in Ukraine.

Anyone who votes Republican is voting for fascism etc., so IMO it’s perfectly fair to accuse these voters of also being fascists etc.

For example, what do we call someone who voted for Nazis in Weimar Germany? A Nazi.

Interesting question!

What are your thoughts?

I try to distinguish between those who favor the direct overthrow of the government by not counting cast ballots and demonizing and silencing critics vs those who favor the indirect overthrow of our democracy by gerrymandering and voter suppression. None in Washington supported any of the voting rights bills. So I categorize all current day Republicans as enemies of democracy. Prove me wrong!

Shocking, I know. Medical Marijuana Bill died in the Kentucky General Assembly this session.

Dude, when even MISSISSIPPI is moving ahead on Medical marijuana, that oughta tell you something.

So, here in Northern NJ, the first of what will be a bunch of dispensaries have opened.

The dispensary on Route 17 in Maywood opened today, and caused significant backups in both directions thanks to rubbernecking and congestion. A Channel 7 news crew was out there for good measure, along with a couple of cop cars keeping traffic moving in and out of the parking lot.

Figure that things will improve as more locations open.

No interest in getting anything; not my thing. But think we should legalize and decriminalize (and expunge records of those who committed marijuana related offenses - especially because they have been disproportionately applied to persons of color despite drug use being about the same across all racial groups).

Waiting for my bar results was one of the most stressful periods of my life. Can you imagine spending thee years in law school burying yourself in debt to be shut out of the career you trained for because you couldn’t pass one exam? I know people who failed their first bar exam, but most of them passed on their second try.

We just got our first lounge in Illinois. It’s not all brown bags that you have to take home anymore. Chicago also just expunged a lot of records. Things are moving in the right direction, too slowly for my liking, but better late than never.

That’s nothing: up in my neck of the woods, we got 9 medical dispensaries, but zero recreational dispensaries. The city really screwed the pooch here when the state approved recreational use as they still haven’t selected the three dispensaries for recreational use.

I’m not sure it’s ‘wannabe’ authoritarianism at this point. It’s just flat out authoritarianism. And the fact that he’s only gotten more popular in Florida the further he goes just makes it more galling. The state may very well be a lost cause for us at this point.

Do you have a particular movie/show in mind?

Not really - they all blur together after a while. I couldn’t tell you the details of most of the ones I’ve watched - but I do remember the plot twists in Daredevil.

CNN+ employees are getting a pretty nice severance package, so I don’t feel too sorry for them. The whole thing was a hare-brained idea, tbh.

Didn’t we all think that the one thing that was wrong with CNN is that we’re not paying a subscription fee?

Thread to watch:

And I like the point about social media being part of a broader infosphere. I always kinda bristle when people say flippant things about ‘Twitter isn’t real life’. No, it isn’t. But it’s an aspect, and an increasingly influential aspect. It doesn’t happen in a bubble, and one of the problems is the feedback loop between it and more ‘traditional’ media, and how that feedback is exploited by bad actors, including many conservative leaders and rabble rousers. That one certain unnamed account being used to brigade LGBT teachers and administrators is a perfect example, considering it’s being held in mainline conservative media as a new rockstar of conservative activism.

“Hey, I know! Let’s charge people 6 bucks a month to watch our shitty news service! It’ll be grand.”

The real issue is we are overwhelmed with streaming services that charge money. It’s not that the cost for a single one is outrageous (unlike the fees I’m still paying for cable), but that everything is fragmented. And you may have to support dozens of different services to access all the programming that interests you. At one time, if you had a single cable company, you had access to potentially a couple hundred networks and all the programs needed. Now, it’s Hulu and Tubi and Amazon and Netflix and ….. etc. I want everything in a single platform and not have to keep track of so many separate services and pay so much in total. The costs deprive those of limited means from more than one service, if even that.

Most of these services are pretty cheap, but it can add up. For me YouTube TV is the big expense, but the infinite DVR is pretty nice to have.

The problem I have with Musk is that he tries to pretend he’s teh genius behind it all when he simply brings money that started from his daddy (Zambian Emerald Mine anyone?) and who bailed from South Africa when he couldn’t otherwise avoid conscription. Meh. Send him to Mars and leave him there.

Musk didn’t get rich from the emerald mine. Yeah, his dad was rich, but apparently wasn’t sharing. Elon was a broke college student when he started zip.to. He only owned 1 computer. He coded on it at night, and ran the website on it during the day. At least that’s the legend.

Yep!! Anyone who runs for office under the GOP banner today is anti-democracy, and supportive of the notion of a white supremacist state. As Ducey of Az said regarding the white supremacist Wendy Rogers, “So that’s what I’ve wanted to do, is move my agenda forward. I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, and [Rogers] is still better than her opponent, Felicia French.” He is full on board with Nazis.
