Won’t see it when you’re looking at me
Stuck in the life between my dreams
Black curtains springing little leaks of sun
I feel the nothing I’ve become

The question I’m asking
Please don’t be answering
Is this where I’m supposed to be?

I’ll let it be the best I can
It doesn’t mean I understand

Nah nah nah (x3)
Let it happen

This sleeping pill was never enough
Now on my flight I’ve woken up
Above the clouds and benеath the sea
That’s wherе I hit reality

I’ll give into infinity
I’ll let it be memory
If this is how it’s supposed to be

I’ll let it be the best I can
It doesn’t mean I understand

Nah nah nah (x3)
Let it happen

Everything will be
Let it happen
Let it, let it happen

Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))  Aug 6, 2022 • 1:59:09pm

Feeling a bit more optimistic about developments this week, but still worried that GOP-controlled state delegations are going to simply disqualify enough votes in 2024 to leave neither candidate with an EC majority, throwing the issue to the states, of which there are more red than blue.

All the Getting out of Votes does not matter if we cannot ensure that they are properly counted, registered and certified.

My county’s community hospital has no obstetrics ward. The nearest hospital which does is sixty miles away.

In fact, most of the counties in my state have no capability for labour and delivery or care of newborns. The combinations of low pay coupled with high debt, conservatives unwilling to invest in medical infrastructure, and the lack of profits for a capitalist medical system, combine to create this problem in rural areas of nearly every state of the Union.

In my state’s rural areas, the risk of fatal complications for a mother or newborn are much higher than in cities, also repeated across the country.

Roadside babies, dangerous births part of risk in small town Nebraska (Flatwater Free-Press)

The story of a woman who went into labour and had to go fifty miles to the nearest hospital with an obstetrics ward, and didn’t make it there because her car broke down. Her baby’s place-of-birth has a rather unique entry on the certificate: Mile marker 18.

Some of this could be solved with certified nurse-midwives, but they require supervision by a physician, the very job which is in short supply in rural areas.

Off to test drive the Rivian today.

JFC what a beautiful truck it is. 11,000 pound towing capacity, storage up the wazoo.Under the back seat, then behind the back seat between the back seat and the bed is an area large enough to hold three roll away suitcases. In the bed the spare tire well can double as an ice chest (and has a drainage plug). There’s a built in air compressor in the back with digital PSI reading for filling bike tires or whatever. The frunk has two levels of storage so you can use the bottom half of that as an ice chest as well.

Drives like a truck. You can change the height off the ground while on the highway - lowest is 9.5 inches…for off road you can increase clearance to 15 inches. My specific model/configuration isn’t in yet, thankfully…need to get some financial stuff in order in the next few weeks because I certainly don’t want a 77k loan on top of the Kia. Besides window wash there are no fluids to change *for the first million miles*…that made me laugh. But I suspect this will be my forever truck.

Does anyone else think the CPAC logo looks like some sort of communist emblem? Seriously, you have the red star, the pump jack could easily be a hammer, and there might be a sickle hidden among all those letters. Given their sympathetic attitude toward the Kremlin, it makes a kind of sense. Communism isn’t official there anymore but there are plenty of ex-commies in the administration, starting with KGB Colonel Vlad Putin himself.

How do you predict which degrees will improve earning potential?

My mom’s 0-tuition degree 70 years ago was a double major in art and anthropology. Her art training got her an excellent job at an ad agency while dad was finishing med school. When she later became a lawyer, her anthropology background is why juries were putty in her hands — she could spin a closing statement that resonated with the deepest parts of their subliminal cultural memory.

Forget the hardtack and bully beef. No reason not to ride out the Apocalypse in comfort. This is an actual product from My Patriot Supply. I don’t know much about this bunch but their stuff is a bit pricey. I mean 87 bucks would get at least 1.37 metric fuque-tons of pork and beans at Walmart. Then again, you might forget all about survival if you had to subsist on pork and beans. Btw, it seems that some kind of MAGA trigger is worth an extra 35% on your asking price in this market.

I got a BA in government and a Juris Doctor. I’ve been working in technology at a financial institution for nearly a quarter century. I’ve heard it rumored that my job title is changing again (fourth time in three years!) to “Lead systems operations engineer.” I told my brother today that I did not feel comfortable with that title because I don’t have the educational credentials to back it up. I do have recipes for hardtack (made with shortening. Doesn’t last as long but tastes so much better!) K ration crackers (the graham ones are actually quite good) & D ration style chocolate bars. Some canned protein, beans and rice and those are decent emergency food for far less than the grifters would rake in.

In the category Doomsday News

Six decades ago, the Strategic Air Command realized it needed a plane that could survive Armageddon.

So SAC, headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, launched a program called the National Emergency Airborne Command Post, or “Night Watch” in February 1962. Three four-engine KC-135A jets were modified with 12 state-of-the-art communications systems to serve as airborne command posts for the president and other top leaders in the event of nuclear war.

Since then, the aircraft have gotten bigger and the comms systems more sophisticated and numerous.

But the planes and their crews still stand by 24/7, at Offutt and other sites, hoping doomsday never arrives but ready to carry on if it does.

This week, the 595th Command and Control Group — the Offutt-based unit that operates the fleet of four E-4B Nightwatch (the current spelling) jets — is celebrating its 60 years of service with a banquet Saturday at Omaha’s CHI Health Center.

Also, I’m trying to not be so snarky when people stumble over language.

I’m realizing more and more that many Americans struggle with language. Even plain old English.

I was never a fast reader. That’s why I gave up reading fiction. I still read non-fiction and scientific papers etc., but with those things I can do the “chunking” maneuver and disassemble the writer’s work into logical parts.

Getting back to the reading thing: this is a serious problem in our society.

A prominent French physicist is apologizing after admitting that a viral “distant star” photo he shared on Twitter was not actually captured by the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) but was rather just a slice of chorizo pork sausage.

On July 31st, Etienne Klein, research director of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, tweeted the photo to his 90,000+ followers on Twitter and claimed that it was a new Webb telescope photo showing the closest star to our Sun.

In follow-up tweets, Klein revealed that what he had Tweeted was just a slice of Spanish sausage.

“Well, when it’s cocktail hour, cognitive bias seem to find plenty to enjoy… Beware of it,” Klein writes. “According to contemporary cosmology, no object related to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere else other than on Earth.

Whatever it was, we won’t have an answer until tomorrow night. Saturday night/Sunday is the Tisha b’Av holiday for observant Jews.

I am not very familiar with religious observances, so I had to defer to that fount of all human ken, Wikipedia [citation needed].

Tisha B’Av (Hebrew: תִּשְׁעָה בְּאָב[a] Tīšʿā Bəʾāv; IPA: [tiʃʕa beˈʔav], lit. “the ninth of Av”) is an annual fast day in Judaism, on which a number of disasters in Jewish history occurred, primarily the destruction of both Solomon’s Temple by the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the Second Temple by the Roman Empire in Jerusalem.

Tisha B’Av marks the end of the three weeks between dire straits and is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar, and it is thus believed to be a day which is destined for tragedy. Tisha B’Av falls in July or August in the Gregorian calendar.

The observance of the day includes five prohibitions, most notable of which is a 25-hour fast. The Book of Lamentations, which mourns the destruction of Jerusalem, is read in the synagogue, followed by the recitation of kinnot, liturgical dirges that lament the loss of the Temples and Jerusalem. As the day has become associated with remembrance of other major calamities which have befallen the Jewish people, some kinnot also recall events such as the murder of the Ten Martyrs by the Romans, expulsions from England, Spain and elsewhere, massacres of numerous medieval Jewish communities during the Crusades, and the Holocaust.

Ahhh, one of my favorite issues, the travails of the rich and powerful. I think this is more common now than it was a hundred years ago, even though there was a real possibility of being pitchforked by Bolsheviks in those long ago days. I think it might be the baleful influence of Ayn Rand, to whom the rich were victims heroically standing up to their collectivist oppressors. It annoys me greatly when I hear it, and I sometimes do. I am not likely to get butthurt over the terrible plight of the rich. If I do, though, I will just go to the garage and hug my Rolls-Royce rather than make an ass of myself by whining about it in public.

I wish they’d just leave me as a technology business systems consultant (or call me Professional Cat Herder) but I don’t have a choice in the matter.

I would just be uncomfortable working with lead. But look, the Romans used a lot of the stuff in their waterworks, and it did no harm, other than drastically increasing infant mortality and causing most of their emperors past Marcus Aurelius to turn out to be sociopathic bitches.

Just buy 100,000 cans of ham and mothers. You’ll be fine, but wish you were dead.

Hah, Huey… Once upon a lifetime ago I was in a scout platoon in the National Guard. There were three helicopter flights I remember the most.

The first was over the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota. I remember sitting on the edge of the Huey and looking down at the bald eagles flying below us.

The next was at Ft. Mcoy and a very young butter bar asked the Vietnam vet CW4 to fly the insertion “for real”. That was a hell of a roller coaster ;)

Last was playing door gunner on a Blackhawk at Hohenfels while on a tour with the OpFor there. Leaning out with only the M-60D and the harness while popping miles/blanks at the units on rotation while we flew at NOE altitude was worth cleaning those dog machine guns.

Memories that make my daily back pain worth it :)

So the Meradalir volcano has had a hard time building a single cone, because the fissures opened up on the west side of a hillside and because it is a valley (the north part of Meradalir) that is closed in on three sides and thus the lava has become one large lake.

Nevertheless, on the east of the fissure, up against the hill. a wall has been built over two days, abutting the hillside.

Just now the central vent, which has by far been the biggest and most vigorous, just stopped with the fountain:

And the lava lake roiled with huge waves.

I think part of the back (east) wall that has been built fell over on top of the fountain.

Earlier today one could see a huge boulder (house size) move south in front of the central fountain. You can sort of make it out now, situated between the rightmost (southern most) fountain and the now stopped central fountain area.

Always fascinating to see what you think is solid rock just float around a pond.

It is pro choice men like Harvey Weinstein and Hugh Hefner and Jeffrey Epstein that think they own women.

Pro life men commit to loving, supporting, and serving one woman and her children until her death, BEFORE having sex.

Which is why one of those “pro-life men” just stood up the other day in the NC legislature and argued out loud that if women can have a choice not to carry a pregnancy to term then men should have the “choice” not to pay child support.

re: #165 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

The anti-abortion movement amongst Protestants was a stalking horse for school segregation. Protestants were sold a lie by conservative operatives such as Ralph Reed and Jerry Falwell’s Christian Coalition.

Aside from the Catholic Church, abortion was sold as the answer to school segregation, which is why the segregationist Evangelicals and other Protestants propped up Ronald Reagan for President.

If a Christian’s goal is to seek the truth as they understand God, then they should be able to discern they were sold a lie to advance racial segregation.

But of course it is not what the Nazi’s said.

Indeed, Nazi Germany had planned breeding, with centers dedicated so that young women would be fertilized by the SS, and they had to carry the fetus to birth.

Forced birth is much more in line with fascism than abortion.

It’s a forced birth meme on the same level as gun-humpers giving you shit for saying “clip” instead of “magazine,” that saying a zygote/blastocyst/fetus doesn’t count as a person is exactly equivalent with Nazi legal policy that Jews were “untermensch” and thus it was totally legal to torture/execute them.

Gunhumpers have that wrong. In the Navy, a magazine is where you store small arms and ordinance. A clip is what you put in a gun.

If Jesus is God, and God is everywhere, Jesus is on-line. It seems to this atheist it would be a lot easier for Jesus to zap a crypto wallet into a billion bits than it would be to construct a scourge and then go whip some bankers.

There is a reason which the greatest indicator which has emerged for susceptibility to Covid-19 is no longer age or a preëxisting medical condition such as diabetes or epilepsy, but is conservatism.

Since the Republican Party (and their Fifth Columnists the Libertarian Party) have politicised everything about mitigating disease from social distancing and masks to vaccines, the gap in severe disease and death has a direct correlation in a county to the percentage of people who are conservatives.

Miquelon is part of the French overseas territory of St. Pierre and Miquelon. It is a remnant of the French Empire territory of New France, located off the south coast of Newfoundland.

en.wikipedia.org

In my conversation with my car insurance company to get Canadian proof-of-insurance cards, they also cover car insurance to the French territory.

Miquelon is connected to St. Pierre by a natural causeway, but we won’t be travelling to that island.

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Aug 7, 2022 • 3:25:57am

re: #195 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Because of the political nature of St. Pierre and Miquelon with Canada, there has been a long-standing dispute between France and Canada regarding an exclusive economic zone around the islands, which in international law is 200 nautical miles. St. Pierre and Miquelon are part of the North American continental shelf, so that could not be used in France’s complaint against Canada.

The situation worsened in the 1980s when France sent an exploration ship to St. Pierre and Miquelon to look for oil and gas. To back them up, France sent warships to prevent the Royal Canadian Navy from interfering.

In addition to searching for petroleum (they found out there was none), France was also concerned with fishermen being able to access the Grand Banks. French naval vessels would occasionally support fishing vessels to keep Canada’s navy from impounding their vessels for intruding into Canadian waters.

All that crap went to international arbitration. As a compromise which nobody liked but settled the dispute, arbiters settled the exclusive economic zone of France, with a narrow zone extending into the Grand Banks. The current map is in the next link.

en.wikipedia.org

Through all this, no one has interfered with tourism (money has to be made). France has maintained a military presence with its Navy since 1997, to remind Canada that St. Pierre and Miquelon are not part of Canada. The French Gendermarie Maritime maintains France’s naval presence; the Gendermarie National provides police services for the territory.

St. Pierre and Miquelon residents have full suffrage, and are represented by an elected senator and deputy in the French National Assembly.

Opinion Just when you thought Josh Hawley couldn’t stoop any lower …
washingtonpost.com

In search of a position that would set him apart from his rivals among the Senate’s young conservatives, Hawley arrived at the cockeyed notion that adding two robust military powers with vibrant economies would somehow increase NATO’s burden on U.S. resources.

By “lonely” I mean that Hawley was the only senator to vote no. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) looked ready for a stiff drink as he contemplated this epic display of grandstanding idiocy. “If any senator is looking for a defensible excuse to vote no, I wish them good luck,” McConnell said — fully aware that the Missouri, um, senator had already announced his opposition. “This is a slam dunk for national security that deserves unanimous bipartisan support.”

A slam dunk indeed. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) shares Hawley’s boundless ambition, although in Cotton’s case, there is some justification for it — not least a military experience that permits him to understand certain basics. Said he: “Aside from their military strength and economic power, Finland and Sweden also allow us to turn the Baltic into a NATO lake, bottle up Russia’s Baltic fleet, cut off its isolated military base at Kaliningrad and expose Russia itself to much greater risk in the event of conflict.”

Like to consider Wordles as Par-4 holes wherein an ace is a double eagle (or albatross), a 2 is an eagle, 3 for the birdie, 4 is par, 5 is a bogey, 6 is double bogey, and anything worse is pick it up.

Actually works out perfectly to the Stableford points system used by many golf courses during their weekly contests where players try to “pull their points” that can be adjusted higher or lower, depending on their scores. Also makes play quicker, since someone looking at a double bogey or worse can just wait for the next hole.

That story is just a small tiny little taste of what’s to come should our Libertarian Utopia Trumpy DeSantis crowd get their wish for a broken USA.

Water Rights will become the #1 immediate issue causing violent conflict across state borders. Unregulated breaches and redirection of waterways will not stand and people and towns who think they are above any sense of responsibility will soon realize that interstate laws and regulations were passed for good reasons… unless the perpetrators are already dead which is likely the outcome if water resources are under threat.

I have no idea what or where Miquelon is, but it’s a fun name.

As a territory of France, and separate from Canada, Miquelon was a popular staging area for rum-runners during prohibition.

Manchin’s comment was “I know my Republican friends will never support this bill, regardless of any amendments. So Imma save time by just voting against all of them.”

Sometimes Manchin actually shows he is a Democrat at heart — though one beholden to local corporate interests.

There are a number of different versions of the Protocols, with different numbered sections; their authors may have assembled the allegations from a base document that researchers have never found. Nevertheless, the various versions of the Protocols tend to have the same general set of allegations, where the Jews:
• … are behind a plan for global conquest,
• … work through Masonic lodges,
• … use liberalism to weaken church and state,
• … control the press,
• … work through radicals and revolutionaries,
• … manipulate the economy, especially through banking monopolies and the power of gold,
• … encourage issuing paper currency not tied to the gold standard,
• … promote financial speculation and use of credit,
• … replace traditional educational curriculum to discourage independent thinking,
• … encourage immorality among Christian youth,
• … use intellectuals to confuse people,
• … control “puppet” governments both through secret allies and by blackmailing elected officials,
• … weaken laws through liberal interpretations,
• … will suspend civil liberties during an emergency and then make the measures permanent.

Yep. Old-skool shit where the “change the group of the bogeyman and/or scapegoats” trick has been played.

[Embedded content]

Survivalist types love that stuff. Know a guy who has dozens of crates if it. The quality of the food is decent. It is a bit pricey but no worse than rations you’d get at REI or such. Interestingly, Patriot Rations come up on estate auctions quite frequently. A lot of older Fox news watchers buy this stuff along with gold and other end of the world crap. If you can get these at auction for pennies on the dollar, they’re great.

Opinion Just when you thought Josh Hawley couldn’t stoop any lower …

Hawley is just proving his loyalty to Trump: if Trump is re-elected, he will giftwrap Ukraine and hand it over to Putin. Anyone who is a true supporter of Trump knows that our alliances will be with dictators the world over and not with those weak kneed leaders who believe in democracy.

We had a Wordle league going here in my city for a while with over 100 of us tracking our scores on a shared Google sheet using modified Stableford - 11 points for a hole-in-one, then 8, 5, 2, 0 and -1.

It was fun and we raised about $5000 for various charities along the way.

St. Pierre and Miquelon residents have full suffrage, and are represented by an elected senator and deputy in the French National Assembly.

I.e one senator (out of 384) and one
representative (out of 577) for 6,008 people.

And you guys complain about some US states having too many senators for their population!

They talked about climate change on CBS Sunday Morning. And Neil DeGras Tyson gave out a very interesting stat: that big ice age 11,000 years ago, where we had glaciers all the way down into what would be the US, was only 8 degrees cooler than our current temperature.

I suspect the pro-GOP Jews somehow have categoried “Soros” as not being Jewish.

Thus Rubio using that codeword rather than saying “Jews” out loud since that is the playbook he is pulling the rhetoric from.

Moldy oldie:
David received a parrot for his birthday. This parrot was fully grown with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren’t expletives were, to say the least, rude.
David tried hard to change the bird’s attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, and anything else that came to mind. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird got worse. He shook the bird and the bird got madder and ruder.
Finally, in a moment of desperation, David put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird squawking, kicking and screaming and then, suddenly, all was quiet.
David, frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird, quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto David’s extended arm and said, “I’m sorry that I offended you with my language and actions. I ask for your forgiveness.”
David was astounded at the bird’s change in attitude and was about to ask what changed him when the parrot continued, “May I ask what the chicken did?”

The Boston chapter of the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions (BDS) movement has decided that what would be really useful is a map of all of the Jewish companies in the Boston area that “support Israel,” in case you needed to know how fucked up the far left can be:

(And while Ian’s article is pretty good, he strangely has a picture of Omar and Pressley at the top, but only mentions them near the end. Pressley represents most of the Boston area, and so she has a comment about it, but there’s nothing else about Omar.)

Texas Gas Prices
Down .02 from yesterday, to 3.570.

The staunch Repuglicans in Roberts County (97% Trump in ‘20) continue to stand their ground on prices, with their average steadfastly staying at 4.659, the highest in the state.

Elsewhere, the craven liberals in Webb County (67% Biden) continue to backslide on prices, all the way down to 3.289, the lowest in the country as well as the state.

We had a Wordle league going here in my city for a while with over 100 of us tracking our scores on a shared Google sheet using modified Stableford - 11 points for a hole-in-one, then 8, 5, 2, 0 and -1.

It was fun and we raised about $5000 for various charities along the way.

I’m sorry but you should get zero for a one. It’s pure luck. Two should be highest.

If anyone was asking me for my opinion. 😂

Glad to hear that! I didn’t realize that fast days aren’t necessarily holidays; so that explains why the Chabad calendar of holidays omitted it!

Yom Kippur is the only fast day that is a holiday. There are 5 other fast days scattered throughout the calendar but they do not require a cessation of work, only eating & drinking.

The GOP base is brainwashed and will accept whatever their masters tell them. You cannot reason with them because they filter out all contrary information and just go with what Trump and Carlson et al tells them. Our brother repeated the lies promoted by Cruz that Republicans voted against the PACT act because it was suddenly loaded with all kinds of gimmicks when it came back from the House. The base is either gullible beyond words or malicious beyond words — or both.

re: #296 Belafon

“…

As for the claim that Trump’s order would have lowered insulin prices, that’s true, but only for low-income patients of Federally Qualified Health Centers.

FQHCs are community clinics that receive government funding to help vulnerable populations. They’re eligible for government-negotiated discounts on certain drugs, including insulin.

Trump’s order would have prevented FQHCs from charging patients within certain income brackets - those making less than 350% of the federal poverty line - more for insulin than the discounted price paid by the clinic, plus a small administrative fee.

But only about 1 in 11 Americans use FQHCs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Primary Care, the agency that oversees them. In turn, only a fraction of those patients use insulin, and only a portion of those fall below the income threshold to qualify for the proposed discount. So Trump’s order would not have made insulin cheaper for most Americans.”
