Unfortunately, my pastor is very much a Republican, though I’ve only heard him get political one time - the sermon from a few weeks ago when he mentioned that being “woke” was in the “evil” column in the “battle of good and evil”.
Funny, I would put “bigotry” in the evil column, and therefore the pastor a promoter of evil.
I don’t go to church, but if I did, I would not set foot in that one again, and tell the pastor why.

From the Washington Post article, it sounds like Cheney may be contemplating a long shot run for the GOP nomination, just so there is an anti-Trump voice in the debates if he runs again. She doesn’t need to run a third party campaign.
The Wyoming GOP has thrown her out of the party. I’m not sure of Wyoming election law on whether she would be eligible to file as a Republican there.
She is running thirty points behind Harriet Hageman (R-Wingnut) in polling there for the US House. If Cheney loses her primary, that would give her time to focus on higher office.

I don’t go to church, but if I did, I would not set foot in that one again, and tell the pastor why.
From the Texas Tribune article about the man who resigned from Family Protective Services:
“She said, ‘I know your intentions are good. But by walking in that door, as a representative for the state parishioner of the church, you are saying in a sense that you condone this, that you agree with it,’” Davis told the paper.
The lawyer’s comment “hit me like a thunderbolt,” he said. “It’s true. By me being there, for even a split second, a child could think they’ve done something wrong.”
As far as the church goes, if the issue is “doing good,” I would try to have exactly one talk with the pastor on why he’s both promoting a bigoted narrative and politics in the church. If an apology is not forthcoming followed by not doing better, then I would be out of the bigot indoctrination den.

No. UK citizens have the right to live and work in the CTA (UK and Ireland). Not in the EU.
Almost certainly the two passports are two US passports .
Any US citizen who wants to visit Israel and Saudi (or other Arab states) will have two passports.
My grandson has visited Israel many times, has just had a vacation in the Emirates. I asked him about this and he said “They recently allowed Israeli citizens to enter the country freely so it’s not an issue any more if you have an Israeli stamp.” So 2 passports for US tourists visiting Israel and also Arab countries are no longer required although that may have been the case a few years ago.

Looks like the Trumps trying to get themselves off the boards after-the-fact so that they can pull up current lists of board members and scream “See! We aren’t the officers and therefore are not responsible!”
Moves made for future proclamations for public consumption. Anyone with any knowledge knows that changing this stuff after the fact does not get you out of the legal responsibilities for actions taken while you *were* the officer or on the board. And I don’t think it will protect their personal estates either since criminal activity taken via the organization is essentially negligence and thus isn’t going to protect you.

Jeremy Kauffman is running for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire as a Libertarian
Liberty to a Libertarian doesn’t mean the same thing it means to other people.
For other people it generally means something like the freedom to go about your business with minimal government interference.
For a Libertarian, they are talking about “economic freedom” (the ability to avoid paying taxes and government restrictions on how they spend their money). For American libertarians, that means they stick to a very narrow reading of the Constitution (such as the government should own no property beyond military bases).
Libertarianism always leads to an oligarchy, fascism, or anarchy anywhere it is implemented.

This is just completely insane and utterly bonkers. Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, known best to me for his cozy relationship with Brian Houston, former lead pastor of Hillsong Churches, he apparently was appointed (self-appointed) to five other portfolios besides being prime minister. This is apparently causing a crisis of democracy in Australia. Per current PM Anthony Albanese:
There have been revelations of an extraordinary and unprecedented trashing of our democracy by the former Morrison government. This has been government by deception.
I used to say that Scott Morrison had two jobs as Prime Minister and he botched them both. It turns out I was wrong about there being just two jobs.
He told us he was a bulldozer and his Coalition colleagues just shrugged their shoulders and cheered him on, not in one election but in two elections. Turns out, he was the world’s first stealth bulldozer. Operating in secret, keeping the operations of the government from the Australian people themselves. A misleading parliament as to who was holding what portfolios and who was responsible.
Our democracy is precious. We should be very proud of the democracy we have put created here in Australia. But the Westminster system relies upon checks and balances. The former government, Scott Morrison and others who were involved in this, deliberately undermined those checks and balances that are so important and essential for our democracy.

To a libertarian the “tragedy of the commons” is that there are laws out there trying to prevent them from unilaterally exploiting and ruining the commons without concern for anyone else.

There was a lot of this sort of thing on blogs and youtube comments even then. I don’t push back on twitter, because I am trying to keep a very low profile there. I’m on mostly for ease of exploring and also so I can “like” and retweet items I think should be raised in profile. More power to you. I try to follow up with “likes” for LGF tweeps, without sitting on the computer twitterboard constantly.

I’d note that the anti-abortion crowd’s next target is distribution of meds for medication abortions via the mails. I think they’re going to HONEST TO GOD try to bring back the Comstock laws. That said, we just need to get in touch with our sisters in Argentina and other countries where they have had this problem and learn how they dealt with it.
And I think I posted an article from the Texas Tribune a week or two back about how people on the other side of the Mexican border have ramped up to help Texas pregnant people (for sure, dunno about AZ) to get abortions. It’s going to be a cat and mouse game and the clock is ticking until the first person dies—either because they had an unsafe, unsupervised abortion or because they were denied an abortion because they weren’t quite dead enough before an abortion would be approved (the Savita Halappanavar death).
And finally, I dunno how safe this is, but a DIY anarchist collective is experimenting with putting misoprostol on cards, which you’re supposed to tear off and put in each cheek. This is absolutely not good. I don’t get why this person and her followers think that harassment is going to endear them to hospital staff.
She’s not trying to endear herself to hospital staff. She’s trying to endear herself to violent wingnuts. She’s trying to cook off one or more with stochastic terrorism.
A better question is why Twitter hasn’t kicked her off. Apparently “libertarian free speech” or enough of the Twitterati haven’t reported her.

Man Who Threatened Anthony Fauci Over Covid Response Is Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison (Wall Street Journal, August 5, 2022)
A man who made threats against Anthony Fauci was sentenced to roughly three years in federal prison, the Justice Department said Thursday.
Thomas Patrick Connally Jr., of West Virginia, sent emails threatening Dr. Fauci, the infectious-diseases expert who has helped steer the U.S. Covid-19 response through two administrations, and members of his family, according to the Justice Department. Mr. Connally also threatened others, including former National Institutes of Health director Francis Collins, the department said.

I continue to be amazed at how much a volcano can change over a few hours.
The Meradalir volcano finally raised its outlet channel so the new caldera surface of lava was raises. Then finally an outlet channel formed where the original outlet was… and then a second one formed on the southeast side that now appears to be the highest flow.
Not only that, but overnight the east side of the volcano, up against the hill, suddenly filled with fresh lava, and one of the first vents, on the hillside, started to outgas. I think that lava must have come from one of the vents that capped itself off early with lava.
A week more of this and it will look even more different.

The problem with the “Abbott Express” isn’t the immigrants, it’s that hundreds of people are being dumped onto the bureaucracy without warning. Once the paper-pushers get caught up with the unexpected influx of work, everything will work out - probably better than it would have if the governors had kept those people captive in their respective states.

“I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior,” said the actor, who identifies as gender nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. “I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
The statement comes as Miller’s starring role in the upcoming DC Comics-adapted superhero movie “The Flash,” has faced growing scrutiny in light of their alleged off-camera behavior.

From the grandson of FDR:
Democrats are on the verge of a huge legislative accomplishment, to significantly reduce energy and health care costs and tax inequality. This moment reminds us of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the historic 1934 midterm elections. There, the Democrats saw electoral gains instead of losses — generally a rare occurrence for the party in power.
We, the descendants of FDR and his New Deal cabinet, believe FDR and Democrats in Congress saw gains in 1934 in large part because they weren’t afraid to propose and pass ambitious pieces of legislation known collectively as the New Deal. In 1933 and 1934, FDR and the 73rd Congress enacted a slew of historic legislation that stabilized the economy by providing jobs for millions of unemployed, rescued the banking system, held major corporations and the wealthiest more accountable, and invested heavily in basic infrastructure and the sustainability of our natural resources. […]We are frankly amazed that Democrats have accomplished so much for the common good with such slender congressional majorities. We think FDR would be mightily impressed — but also hyper-vigilant about the risks still lying ahead — from the health of our economy to our basic freedoms to our democracy.
Whew, finally! Now he’ll be able to focus on all those foreign policy issues he’s completely ignored during his *checks notes* trips to the Middle East and Asia and expanding NATO and rallying all of Europe to counter Russia and defend Ukraine https://t.co/s6wsKexIMi

They have lots of reasons. For starters, they cost tax money. GOP ideology is that the Free Market can do anything better, even educate our children.
They also prefer private schooling because it helps to stabilize the class system. The rich will be able to afford the best schooling for their children while the poor will get the minimum education necessary to make them useful to the rich.

No - no - no. Maybe if the Democrats get a healthy majority in both the House and Senate from the 2022 election, we can revisit the issue. Otherwise, an expansion will just give the GOP the opportunity to install an overwhelming number of justices the next time they take over. We don’t have the votes to expand the court now; if the GOP takes the Senate, a Democratic president will not be able to appoint a single judge to any court. Only if the GOP reverts to a pre-Nixon GOP will there be a possibility of some justice but that’s not happening any time in the near future.
The only hope for salvation is for lightning to strike down 3 GOP SCOTUS justices before the first Monday in October of this year.

Looking over Oz’s wikipedia entry I think he is a textbook example of someone skilled in a particular field (heart surgeon in his case) where they seem to think that expertise automatically transits over into other fields. Which is certainly not the case. It looks like his attraction to alternate medicine woo and the media spotlight goes back to the 1990s. So what you see is what he has been doing for 30 years.

Our Trumpster brother has repeatedly said the current level population world wide is not sustainable. This is 100% the reason why Russia is FAFO in Ukraine right now, because Russia is going to have to population of Wyoming in a few years if they don’t start pumping out units or get really cool with immigrants really fast.
I know Xi is dumb, but he’s not stupid. China has less practical experience with war. Their military’s entire reason for being has been to keep people from wanting too much of that there freedom stuff. Taiwan has been preparing for this since 1949, and is basically a fortress and it has the US, UK, Japan, and Australia backing it up.
China even looks at Taiwan the wrong way they get cut off from world markets and the power is going out in about 15 minutes, everything else collapses in 30. Playing patty-cake with Russia and Belarus isn’t going to work.

Is the USA bigger than China?
The United States occupies a total area of about 3.8 million square miles while China has an area of approximately 3.7million square miles. However, China has a bigger land area than the United States. The Chinese land area is about 2.2% bigger than the United States (3.5 million square miles).
re: #313 Hecuba’s daughter
Our Trumpster brother has repeatedly said the current level population world wide is not sustainable. He was thinking that 4-5 billion might be the maximum, but I’ve seen other sources that claim that if we want a first world level life style, then the earth can only support perhaps 2 billion. I am not an expert and cannot guess at the maximum level if we want a planet that supports other lifeforms too — if we don’t want a world as in TOS “Mark of Gideon”.
And I’m sure the Trumpster brother has some “odd” criteria on who those 2-4 billion people should be in terms of ethnicity and/or religion?

12-16 billion if we stop scaremongering GMOs, nuclear power, and get serious about climate change.
We will level off naturally way before that. Whatever the population of Earth is between 2050-2100 (probably the 2050 pop) is going to be the cap. We have about 25-75 years to figure out an economy that’s not based entirely on “growth” but isn’t backwards “do without/luddite” bullshit.

re: #316 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)
There’s a lot of variations on, “hm, climate change…what if we just let everyone die?” out there.
The spectrum is just from outright race/class eugenics to soft-walked eugenics of “we can’t do anything so people will just die and they’ll mostly be brown, poor, and in the global south.”

A lot of people have likened the situation that’s going on right now is, you know, they say we’re in a banana republic. I think that’s an insult to Banana Republics across the country. I mean, at least the manager of Banana Republic, unlike our president, knows where he is and why he’s there and what he’s doing.”
— North Carolina congressional candidate Bo Hines (R), trying to deride President Biden’s mental acuity while confusing the expression “banana republic” with the clothing store chain.
Roseanne Roseannadanna?
In this live interview just last Friday, it appears that the @BoHines kiddo, Republican running for Congress in #NC13, does not understand what a “banana republic” is. He honestly thinks everyone’s referring to the clothing retail chain.

Pissing of judges is not a good idea. But I’m sure they’ll see the FO since they’ve already done the FA part.
re: #49 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
Liberty to a Libertarian doesn’t mean the same thing it means to other people.
For other people it generally means something like the freedom to go about your business with minimal government interference.
For a Libertarian, they are talking about “economic freedom” (the ability to avoid paying taxes and government restrictions on how they spend their money). For American libertarians, that means they stick to a very narrow reading of the Constitution (such as the government should own no property beyond military bases).
Libertarianism always leads to an oligarchy, fascism, or anarchy anywhere it is implemented.
You’re right that iIt’s about economic freedom, and a narrow reading of the constitution. However, it’s also about preventing the federal government from preventing them from imposing their views on others.
The Mises Caucus has recently taken over the Libertarian party to a very paleo libertarian stance. (Think bending pure libertarianism to support a culturally conservative or reactionary point of view, or say Ron Paul.)
“Open borders — horrible idea, they allow people to come in to the country and mooch off welfare. Let’s get rid of birth right citizenship too”
“Small government federally, so we can impose as much government as we want closer to home.”
“No public schools so that we can home school or private school instead. Vouchers are redistribution.”
“End the EPA. Let everyone use the courts to sue others for pollution.” Conveniently ignoring the friction and extra costs of forcing thousands or millions to sue many polluting entities.
“F@#$k the rest of the world — Fortress America.”
re: #300 Jack Burton in Mactified Forshion
It’s claimed that they are overreporting the population by 115 million (and the 115 phantom people are in the 18-30 range, making their demographics problem even worse). People I know who have spent time in China believe it’s much worse than that.
The demographics chart in China is so top heavy with seniors that their population is going to be cut in half in about 30 years.
Everything about the CCP is smoke and mirrors. Their military is a giant police force. The level of hand-wringing about Taiwan right now is massively overblown IMO.
They should with Kinmen County, which is, literally, a long rifle shot (less than two miles) from Xiamen on the *western* side of the Formosa Strait.

I wonder what will happen in Florida when, after a semester or so, these vets find out what a hard bitch of a job teaching is and start joining the Florida Teachers Association union… ;)
No. They will call on the Republican dominated Florida Government to allow teachers like themselves to carry guns to threaten and impose their will on classrooms… in the name of “security”.

If we cannot teach our students calculus, then other nations will, and we will just have to hire them instead of our own.
