Biden’s Independence Hall Address Offered Non-MAGA Republicans an Off-Ramp From This Madness
If he can turn “MAGA Republican” into a political curse word, his whole career will be justified.
esquire.com

The “not every Republican” thing got a pained sigh from me in the moment, but then I reflected on the fact that this wasn’t an appeal for now. It was an appeal for November, and for 2024. He was offering them an off-ramp before their whole thing goes over into the Gorge Of Eternal Peril. If they choose not to take it, then that’s their choice, and the president was emphasizing that it can be a politically perilous one. It’s on you now, he was saying to them.

But on the subject of the survival of the republic, he reminds me of what Frederick Douglass said of Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of a park to the memory of the murdered president:

His great mission was to accomplish two things: first, to save his country from dismemberment and ruin; and, second, to free his country from the great crime of slavery. To do one or the other, or both, he must have the earnest sympathy and the powerful cooperation of his loyal fellow-countrymen.
Without this primary and essential condition to success his efforts must have been vain and utterly fruitless.[…] Viewed from the genuine abolition ground, Mr. Lincoln seemed tardy, cold, dull, and indifferent; but measuring him by the sentiment of his country, a sentiment he was bound as a statesman to consult, he was swift, zealous, radical, and determined.

That is the best definition of a president anyone ever gave. That’s what we saw Wednesday night, and heard over the screeching of the bullhorns.

re: #3 Charles Johnson

I’ve been a volunteer video producer and technician in my own right.

A rule of thumb for TV colors is that saturated colors, like the ones lighting Independence Hall, look very harsh, because of how colors are encoded. In the old days, bright red colors looked VERY harsh in the old analog NTSC TV system. Patterned fabrics and houndstooth could get you thrown off the set!

I’ve been an expert in old analog video, and current digital video, and while digital is way better, many of the same color glitches still exist because the digital standards were derived from the analog standards, in some cases, dating back 60 years. The red background looked terrible to my eyes. I thought the video was noticably bad compared to White House broadcasts, either inside or from the Rose Garden.

What looks good for illuminating a historic building, is not necessarily good for television use. Were I in charge, I’d account for any outside lighting, even sunlight, and try to adjust the cameras and the lighting on President Biden. He could have used a little more soft light on him. I’d put Independence Hall further behind him so that the background light doesn’t bleed into the subject.

(I just wasn’t going to cede any points to Republicans or the Beltway. If anything, Biden wasn’t blunt enough for my feelings.)

It’s going to be a very wet weekend up here in SE Alaska:

Alaska Satellite

NWS has scheduled up to 3 to 8 inches of rainfall in various parts of Southeast.

Summer is definitely over. Fireweed blossoms have been gone for for two weeks, the alder leaves have turned to a yellow/brown and are starting to pile up in the yard.

I expect it to be tough winter as the squirrels are cutting spruce cones for future storage. This is going to be a problem as the cones are not yet ripe and the seeds will have little nutritional value.

The temps have been in the 50’s which means the furnace must be kept on to take the chill out of the house. Got a heating oil refill three weeks ago and the cost was $5.15/gal. PFD payments (about $3400 each) will be sent out on 9/20 and that will help.

Both gas ($5.07/gal) and diesel ($5.50/gal) take their time to fall here in SE. The distributers have the ready excuse that they have to always wait until the next barge of lower priced fuels to arrive. The barges take a long time to arrive when the prices are falling but get here very quickly when the prices are rising. Gee, I wonder why.

I cannot for the life of me memorize the NATO phonetic alphabet. When I was a kid (and before the police radios were all encrypted) my dad and I used to spend hours and hours listening to police radio traffic on a Radio Shack scanner. I learned the scheme that most police departments use, which is:

Adam
Boy
Charles
David
Edward
Frank
George
Henry
Ida
John
King
Lincoln
Mary
Nora
Ocean
Paul
Queen
Robert
Sam
Tom
Union
Victor
William
Xray
Young
Zebra

I have no idea why there’s a different system from the NATO one, and no idea why police departments seem to favor it.

IMO fire ants are for the “severe but recoverable scenarios”. For the real “shit hits the fan” scenarios there can be no better use of resources than something suitably spectacular for the architects of the disaster.

Um, no. Fire ants are the assholes of ant-dom in the US. The little fuckers are everywhere where there is no routine solid freeze that reaches 36” below ground.

I find pouring 15% bleach down into the nests is quite effective and doesn’t fuck up the yard.
