Sometimes I think I bailed out on the right way too early. Look at all these creeps who were good foot soldiers for decades suddenly getting praised and rewarded for being never-Trumpers. I should have hung on and damaged the country for much longer so I could get in on this grift.

Not really. But goddamn.

Is this an unmanned trip to the moon or is there a crew? I’ve not followed it at all and it doesn’t get a ton of press.

Unmanned. New rocket, new tech, NASA doesn’t want to prove it out with a manned flight.

He GOP establishment did nothing to distance themselves with the nutbags when they started making zany and unsupported claims about Obama the Secret Muslim or Hillary the pedophile Seal Killer, etc., which only encouraged the fringe element to go even more extreme, which culminated in QAnon doctrine now becoming party line.

William Lewis  Sep 3, 2022 • 12:52:14pm

So I just discovered there is still a real photo lab in Eau Claire that develops film in house! I’d stopped doing any film because mail order labs are prohibitively expensive. While not as cheap as the olden days, this is reasonable. Digital beats 35mm really but old medium format is still a different story.

Dunk & standard scan:
$8.99 - roll of C41 color - 35/120/APS
$11.99 - roll of B&W - 35/120/APS
No inhouse E-6 - 35/120 (mail-out 2-4 weeks) but same price as B&W, so not bad at all.
Hi-Rez scan $5 more.

I’ve dug out my Rolleicord III from ~ 1950 & the remains of my 120 film (11 rolls of B&W, 1 color, 1 slide) & I’ll see how good they are. Online reviews are very good though.

Stock photo. Mine’s in good shape but not that good ;) and I have an original Rollei leather carrying case for it.

ETA: their low rez is 6 mp, high rez is 30 mp. Good numbers.

I had so many phone videos.

Here’s a gem. It’s US 322 east from US11-15 across the Clarks Ferry Bridge on a crystal clear day after a scenic snowfall.
Everything is suspended.
That is Peters Mountain in the distance. Appalachian Trail crosses the river at Clarks Ferry and then drags the participants over a field of very sharp rocks…A favorite.
Not a drift or dirt pile of slush to be seen on the road, and as I remember the majority of the river was frozen fast.

Youtube, for all its flaws, has been my goto source for music from artists I’d never heard of before to individuals and groups that do spot on covers of my favorite songs, singers, and groups. Just this week, I discovered an a capella group out of England called Voces8. They’ve been around since 2015 and have a number of albums, mainly traditional songs but also covers of later works. The video I saw was a cover of Enya’s May It Be from the Lord of the Rings. It is hard to believe that human voices can achieve such an ethereal pinnacle. Have a listen. Keep some Kleenex handy.

I read through that and my first thought is stop worrying about the cable news business. Stop chasing the consistently dwindling and aging cable demographic and chase after the younger and growing number of cord cutters. Sure, keep the cable aspect of it for now as a cash cow but that’s not where the long term big bucks are going to be.

I know it’s living in a bubble but, if I could easily design my half hour of news (and skip something that doesnt interest) news, I might consider it. Ten minutes top US headlines, 5 minutes top World, Ukraine update, 30 seconds business, Mpls weather, western ND weather, southern UT weather, FCS highlights, fall color update, new streaming releases once a week, and short videos of dancing ferrets, and the option to easily change to dancing lamas and I’d be good.

re: #100 dat_said

I’m fifty-six. I cut the cord and went back to OTA broadcast television in 2008. I stopped watching broadcast news in real time shortly thereafter. The LGF comment section is my preview filter for steering me toward relevant national current event stories. If something catches my interest here, then I dig further without having to constantly filter the noise from talking head obfuscation and framing.

Lazy, ignorant, and inadvisable, perhaps, but it helps keep me balanced by avoiding sensory, emotional, and informational overload beyond my ability to process if I were to encounter modern media’s frustrating stimuli firsthand and unfiltered.

Cable news is not getting me back when I turn 65. Nor is broadcast news.

And that’s the problem that CNN appears not to be picking up on. Their target demographic is about to go away completely. People like you and me, the cord-cutters, aren’t going to go back to a cable service again. They might make a lot of money in the short term by pivoting to the right, but after the old racist guard all dies off, who’s left? People who aren’t going to want anything to do with CNN, that’s who.

When I was in high school, one set of bathrooms was taken over by the smokers (students) and the other set was for the usual uses. Later, a chain-link outdoor cage was built for the students to smoke in. The nearest junior college was called ‘high school with ashtrays’ because being able to smoke in class was the big difference. I told that to someone once, and their response was, ‘YOU COULD SMOKE INDOORS?’ Made me feel old. I remember when the last 5 rows in a Greyhound bus were for smokers.

Think I’ll steal this joke:

Is the AR-15 good for feral hogs?

No, most hogs literally turn their noses up at the AR
because it is too short and the receiver and ejected
cases tend to burn their snouts.

Some hogs pack Barrett .50s but most are pretty traditional
and prefer a .50/90 Sharps or Remington Rolling Block.

Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called for Kiwi Farms to be taken down after she was swatted by a person claiming to be affiliated with the site. ‘Isn’t it concerning that such a website exists?’ Greene said in an interview with Newsmax. ‘That website needs to be taken down. There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy.’

It was around then that the company stopped selling Kiwi Farms a $20 per month service to customize error messages shown to web users when its pages wouldn’t load. On Saturday, it withdrew the remaining free services, which fend off denial-of-service attacks and speed content delivery by making copies of the site in many locations.”

So it took an attack on a rightwing kook to get them to change course. Interesting.

Iran Briefly Seized Two U.S. Navy Unmanned Sailboats In The Red Sea

Just days after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy attempted to capture a U.S. Navy Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel in the Persian Gulf, the Iranian Navy has now reportedly done the same with two more of the systems, this time in the Red Sea. The seizure was said to have taken place on Thursday with Iran eventually releasing the unmanned sailboats back into U.S. Navy custody on Friday, but the reasoning as to why it occurred in the first place remains murky.

I do not smoke, but seem to remember that it was in the 1980’s when US companies started to restrict where folks could smoke. First, there were restrictions inside buildings. Then, eventually, smoking had to be outside.

I will say that, even as a non-smoker, smoking did not bother me until years after it was banned. Only then I could smell the difference between a smoking and smoke-free environment. And only then did I notice the smell of tobacco smoke on smokers clothing and hair.

I remember the “No Smoking” signs on airlines for takeoff and landing which dated from before my traveling on airplanes.

And I remember the death of Canadian Folksinger Stan Rogers due to what was likely a smoker trying to secretly get one last puff in an airplane bathroom. The plane caught fire and 23 passengers died.

Hah!

While I was not particularly bothered by my parents smoking. (My father smoked a pipe and my mother smoked cigarettes.) I was never averse to teasing the parents. At some point back in the 1970’s after family dinner but while still seated at the dinner table, as was custom, my father pulled out and lit up his pipe and my mother lit a cigarette.

By pre-arranged signal, I and my two brothers pulled out Parodi cigars and lit them up. At which point my mother put out her cigarette and my father put out his pipe. So we put out the cigars.

Amusingly, it was my younger sister who convinced my parents to reduce their smoking. She was a smoker who quit when she got married, convinced to stop by her husband, a non-smoker. And she then spread the ‘word’ to the ‘rents.

Oregon was among the first to ban indoor smoking. I was living in Portland in the 80s, and a friend from college visited. We were eating at a sidewalk cafe and he remarked that there seemed to be more smokers in Portland than most cities. It was because they were all hanging out on the sidewalk in front of where they work. Then he said it seemed remarkably clean, and just then, a passer-by chewed out a car passenger who dropped something out their window.

I don’t know what group this is, but don’t confuse it with the Knights of Malta, which was in the news today. The tl;dr is that Pope Francis basically imposed a new constitution on the Knights of Malta, it limits the term of the grand master to 10 years, requires retirement at 85, and opens up the top offices in the order to non-European nobility.

Pope dissolves Knights of Malta leadership, issues new constitution

VATICAN CITY, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Saturday dissolved the leadership of the Knights of Malta, the global Catholic religious order and humanitarian group, and installed a provisional government ahead of the election of a new Grand Master.

The change, which the pope issued in a decree, came after five years of often acrimonious debate within the order and between some top members of the old guard and the Vatican over a new constitution that some feared would weaken its sovereignty.

The group, whose formal name is Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, was founded in Jerusalem nearly 1,000 years ago to provide medical aid for pilgrims in the Holy Land.

It now has a multi-million dollar budget, 13,500 members, 95,000 volunteers and 52,000 medical staff running refugee camps, drug treatment centres, disaster relief programs and clinics around the world.

The order has been very active in helping Ukrainian refugees and war victims.

*snip*

Under the previous constitution, the top Knights and the Grand Master were required to have noble lineage, something reformers said excluded nearly everyone except Europeans from serving in top roles.

The new constitution eliminates the nobility rule as well as the tradition of Grand Masters being elected for life.

“It will be more democratic. The question of nobility has now become secondary,” Tomasi said.

Future Grand Masters will be elected for 10-year terms, renewable only once, and will have to step down at age 85.

Another family tobacco story.

My grandfather, Missouri farmer, used to smoke Bull Durham tobacco. Bull Durham tobacco is of the older “roll-your-own” variety.

Interestingly, that entire part of the family emigrated from Germany just before the Civil War and settled in Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas. (Part later married into the Younger family, of Jesse James fame.)

Anyway, a number of the family served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Mostly in under Sherman. After the capture of Atlanta and then Savannah, Sherman moved his command northward through Georgia, South Carolina, and then North Carolina.

As the war neared it’s end, Sherman’s Army encamped in what is now Durham County, North Carolina. Among the agricultural products seized for the Army’s use was a sizeable amount of local tobacco. Which proved of very high quality.

Apparently a lot of Missouri boys returned home addicted to tobacco smoking and with a very high regard for Durham tobacco. And their children and grand-children picked up the tradition.

So this cowboy has been lost in the desert for days.

Suddenly he sees a tree that’s draped in bacon.

Screaming “A bacon tree! I’m saved!”.

And he runs to the tree.

But as he gets to the tree, shots ring out and he falls to ground, dead.

It wasn’t a bacon tree, it was a ham bush.

This thread discusses the Russian Army strongpoint just outside Kherson. It appears to be manned by Russian paratroopers who are reportedly putting up a very hard fight against the Ukrainians.

A major string point south of them collapsed when the troops manning it, Donetsk-Luhansk troops reportedly ran away. (These were the guys who are being forcibly grabbed right off the street by recruitment gangs and sent to the front with a few days training and inadequate and ancient military equipment. So their lack of enthusiasm is understandable.)

OK, so: being fascinated by coins, I went and looked it up, and the picture of the coin in Trump’s idiotic pitch is actually that of an American Eagle (an official US bullion coin), though without the domination and weight on the reverse, as the actual coins have. The biggest one (“$50”) is one ounce of gold: the smallest (“$5”) 1/10 of an ounce. With the market price of gold around $1700/ounce, these are fairly pricey “premiums” to be being offered by a political pitch (especially by a notorious cheapskate like Trump), I’m thinking that those donors “qualified” for the coins probably aren’t going to need them - I really wonder if Newsmax draws that well-heeled a demographic…

Note that toasters are also prohibited. Commenters have come up with ingenious explanations but it is still a mystery. I could understand if they had a baptismal font for initiating new members into the MAGA/Golden Calf Cult, since terrorists could heave a plugged in toaster into it and fry the whole mob of initiates as well as the high priests (assuming they had a long enough extension cord).
A few years ago a Fundy preacher actually was electrocuted when he took a corded microphone with him so he could continue his harangue from the chest deep water of the baptismal font (which could more accurately be called a tank in Fundy churches).

re: #268 Captain Ron

The merger of Warner media with Discovery to make the new corp WBD has brought about quite a few changes.

The new upper management appears to have come from the Discovery side and the old Turner and Warner people are no longer calling the shots.

To finance the merger, the new WBD CEO had to promise the money guys that he could find $3B in savings, which he has done by slashing left and right.

The CNN unit CEO left in Feb of this year. The new guy hired came from CBS, and his prior job was producing Colbert, etc. His bio does not make it seem like he is a right-wing stooge.

The reality we must always remember is that for-profit news outlets are owned by people who want to make money. And the wealthy keep their money by buying politicians. In a sense, the owners of WBD (and thus CNN) don’t really care about any ideology other than profits.

There are companies out there who are owned by religious fanatics and for them their properties can become crusades - e.g. Sinclair.

Others like Murdoch really do only worship mammon, and they will use their properties (in Murdoch’s case Fox News) to manipulate the masses to further their own bank accounts.

Why must we wait until some of America’s ablest journalists are sacked before they are willing and able to tell America the truth?

It is not “partisan” to explain what Trump and his anti-democracy movement are seeking.

It is not “taking sides” to point out that the Trump Republicans are trying to establish an authoritarian government in America.

It is not “violating journalistic standards” to tell the unvarnished truth about what America is facing today.

In fact, a failure to call out the Trump Republicans for what they are - liars, enablers, and accessories to crimes against the constitution - itself violates the most basic canons of journalistic ethics.

No Malarkey!  Sep 4, 2022 • 6:49:38am

My wish list for next year if the Democrats retain Congress and add two seats to their Senate majority:
1) Reform the filibuster. I don’t mind if they give the minority plenty of time to debate, but at some point the majority must have the right to vote for passage of bills. The Senate is anti-majoritarian enough without giving just 41 Senators the power to block almost everything.
2) National abortion rights bill. If the Democrats retain control of Congress, that will be a clear mandate to protect reproductive freedom on a national basis, and should be the first bill enacted once the filibuster is out of the way.
3) Voting rights and election reform bill. It should be comprehensive, prohibiting gerrymandering, providing for same day registration, voting by mail, equitable access to drop boxes and in-person voting sites and early voting, prohibiting state officials from voiding the vote outcome, and clarifying the congressional certification process.
4) D.C. statehood. I’d like to see a referendum in Puerto Rico using rank choice voting between statehood, the status quo and independence to establish conclusively whether or not a majority of Puerto Rican voters prefer statehood or commonwealth status.
5) Court reform. At a minimum, SCOTUS should be expanded to 13 seats so the illegitimately seated reactionary majority loses its power to act as a GOP super-legislature. I’d also like to see SCOTUS ethics standards and federal judicial term limits.
That is an enormous agenda for one Congress. But other pressing issues that need to be addressed include more climate legislation, immigration reform, and gun control.

re: #308 No Malarkey!

So…governing

seriously. just wait until you get home to order the damned pizza. I would never touch food that got left out on my front stoop while I wasn’t in the house. Too many varmints around for that, one of whom has helped himself to all the loose change in my car a couple of times when I’ve forgotten to lock it.

It’s the bugs. Critters will tear into the box, abscond with the goodies and call it a night. Bugs will gladly ride into your house and enjoy life.

This isn’t exactly “new news”: the Blacks For Trump fools were exposed as a front for the Yahweh Ben Yahweh nut-cult back when TFG recruited them as stage-dressing for his campaign in 2016: guess they don’t have a lot of other gigs pending.

In the real world, of course, women don’t carry a pregnancy for 9 months for the fun of killing their baby just before its born. Late term abortions are very rare, few doctors do them, and are almost always because the woman’s life is in grave danger or the baby has devastating deformities and won’t survive.

The flip side of the above is that not talking about it kept the door closed. If the immediate targets of the attack on democracy weren’t bringing it up, why would anyone else? I think a big part of the lack of media coverage of the threat of authoritarianism was the Democrat’s not making an issue of it.

True, but this guy is a Republican Congressman: to most of them ( and their voter base), “the real world” is a virtually irrelevant concept: way less important than the alt-construct they, and RW media have built up for them to inhabit.
