A federal judge’s extraordinary decision on Monday to interject in the criminal investigation into former President Donald J. Trump’s hoarding of sensitive government documents at his Florida residence showed unusual solicitude to him,” the New York Times reports.

“This was ‘an unprecedented intervention by a federal district judge into the middle of an ongoing federal criminal and national security investigation,” said Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at University of Texas.”

I watched Episode 2. I have just one tiny nit to pick. The dwarves prosthetic noses, while not as obviously fake & clownish as they were in The Hobbit, still looked like grotesque caricatures of, um, a certain ethnic group.

It was probably not intentional but is not cool.

I really like the girl hobbit.

Last time I partied down south with some frenz one guy was a farmer. He brought two kinds of hot sauce and white pineapple. We ate some cold and fresh, I put some on the BBQ just to get some lines. But the best?

The consensus that I’ve seen from most lawyers on Twitter is:

1) Judge Cannon’s ruling is a legal abomination;
2) The scope of the special master’s powers, as administered by the judge, will determine just how “in the tank” she is, as opposed to just an undue diligence in covering the bases;
3) In the end, it’s unlikely that the special master will materially affect the DOJ’s investigation or decision to indict;
4) The real damage here is in the fact that Judge Cannon very clearly had a predetermined result in mind, and outright ignored large swaths of law (including SCOTUS precedent; see, e.g., Nixon v. GSA and US v. Nixon) to get there, eroding the people’s faith in the judiciary to adhere to the rule of law.

Is it also not a delaying tactic: Trump wants to wait until after midterms to declare candidacy, which, I believe, will alter his legal standing when it comes to the investigation

The lawyers I’ve seen have all said no. The general gist is that, regardless of whether he declares or not, he’s fucked; the charges will issue regardless of this action. There seems to be an even split on whether DOJ should even appeal this or not; the special master process is extremely unlikely to do any damage to their case, and “just get it over with” would avoid the delay that would come from appealing this, potentially all the way up to SCOTUS, and the potential risk that might come from them doing something brain-dead stupid. We all know, from this summer’s disastrous Fed Soc display of power, how the current SCOTUS is all about doing brain-dead stupid things.

Swedish Nazis ( the ones we were dissing way back in 2006 ) might impact their election.

Sweden’s right hopes to wrest power from the ruling Social Democrats in Sunday’s general election, relying for the first time on far-right support in what is expected to be a tight race.

The anti-immigration and nationalist Sweden Democrats have long been treated as pariahs on the Scandinavian country’s political scene.

But opinion polls suggest they will surge to become the second-biggest party in parliament — and one whose backing is essential if the right wants to form a government.

The same ex, who saw which way the chilly winds were blowing, applied for a job in Germany. She called in sick to take the plane to Frankfurt to interview.

Turns out that another expat from NYC whom I later became friends with interviewed her and even advised her not to take the job (with Goldman-Sachs); it was impossible hours, no recognition and when you are used up, you get dumped.

Alas, she bumped into her boss at the airport on the flight back and had no choice but to take the job, get worked until she got ill and dumped.

Many major retailers slashed their financial outlooks for the year after seeing shoppers pull back on many discretionary items in the latest quarter. But among the notable exceptions: beauty.

Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s and Nordstrom all highlighted strong sales of beauty items in their fiscal second-quarter earnings reports issued over the past few weeks. Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, said that it’s seeing increased momentum in its beauty business, citing strong sales in cosmetics as well as skin and hair businesses. Meanwhile, Ulta Beauty, the largest beauty retailer in the country, said overall sales spiked nearly 17% in its most recent quarter, compared to the same period last year.

Americans, once stuck behind Zoom screens in the thick of the pandemic, are out and about and wanting to look their best. Co-workers — some of whom are meeting each other for the first time — are trying to make an impression. Meanwhile, people are going out on dates and getting together for summer parties and barbeques after months of pandemic-induced leisurewear and Netflix binges at home.

GOP - we had it so great under Trump and things suck under Biden.

That’s some serious inversion of reality, and facts/reality do not match up.

What was better under Trump? Not the stock market. Not the unemployment rate. Not the economic growth. Trump ended up with a net loss on jobs. Biden’s growing more jobs than any president in recent history.

Biden passed infrastructure, climate change, and a host of key legislative initiatives.

Trump passed a massive tax cut for billionaires that added trillions in debt and not much else. Rich got richer under Trump. Biden’s programs are helping all Americans, reducing poverty, and helping people get services they need.

Watch the video, unreal.

Body and dash cam footage has been released by Oklahoma City Police showing a suspect leading officers on a wild car chase along the interstate after allegedly killing a cop.

Benjamin Plank is accused of shooting two Oklahoma County deputies and killing one of them while they served him with an eviction notice at his home.

Plank managed to get away from the scene resulting in a high-speed car chase with him driving a grey truck whilst towing a speed boat.

re: #96 Belafon

Huge, if true.

That means that Russia is in huge trouble, and puts North Korea in trouble too. They certainly can’t have the ammo to spare for their own needs, and it’s not likely to be high tech ordinance. They can’t get enough raw ammo for artillery and the like, and their own economy is crippled to deal with Ukraine’s tech advantages (and NATO assistance).

This war is getting worse for Russia by the day. It’s exposing every weakness in Russian military gear, tactics, logistics, and strategy. Throwing more ammo at the problem isn’t going to improve their position either - it’s going to cause more civilian casualties, which the Russians don’t give a crap about.

It also assumes that there’s a supply chain that can sustain those kinds of shipments.

You’ve got to have rail or ships that can get the gear to where it’s needed. North Korea is limited on both fronts, and Russia’s logistics is crap (to be charitable).

Russian rail is unreliable at best, and Ukraine has gotten the drop on the rally points where that equipment can get to the front.

Shipping doesn’t help Russia because they’d still have to get the gear to the front. Ultimately, this is a rail issue inside Russia proper. Even without sabotage and the like slowing rail delivery, things are mess for Russia.

North Korea can probably get whatever they have to their border. What happens after is going to be slow and inefficient, because Russian logistics is slow and inefficient.

According to Igor Girkin, the war is already lost.

This was published today in Czech media: Here’s a translation.

The war in Ukraine will continue until the complete defeat of Russia, according to the former leader of pro-Russian separatists and former ally of President Vladimir Putin, Igor Girkin. According to him, Russia has already lost the war.

“The war will continue until the complete defeat of Russia, that’s how it is. In fact, we have already lost, the rest is now only a matter of time. The sooner the Kremlin realizes this, the better,” said Girkin, also known as Strelkov.

He added what, in his opinion, are the nearest prospects of the Russian command. The Kremlin is said to be hoping that by increasing activity, shelling and attacks, it will increase the pressure on the Ukrainians, who would then proceed to sign a peace agreement. “But that won’t happen. But it is clear that many people in the Kremlin hope for that,” he added.

Girkin is a real hardliner. I think he’s figured that unless the Kremlin goes whole hog on their war effort in Ukraine, there’s really no way they can achieve any meaningful victory.

Sooner or later, the Ukrainian armed forces are going to seize the initiative and drive the Russians out. Then Putin is going to have to explain to his people how the Russian Army got its ass handed to it.

And on that note….I strongly suspect Putin will lay the blame for his failure squarely on the shoulders of the separatist leaders in Donetsk and Luhansk.

Alas, the fifth column downed a fifth of vodka and fell flat on its face.

Russia has nothing to gain by a war of attrition especially as it seems to be losing men and equipment at a faster rate than Ukraine.

If this ends up in a Russian defeat, this is going to go down in the history books as one of the most significant strategic blunders in the annals of human conflict. There will be books and documentaries, and no doubt there will be lectures on the subject in military academies around the world (well, maybe not in Russia - at least not anytime soon).

re: #102 GlutenFreeJesus

I’m certainly not an expert, but I have always heard that producing military equipment (especially “low-tech ordnance” derived from old Soviet designs) was the biggest industry in North Korea: and that armaments were basically NK’s sole valuable export.
So unless Trump’s Bestie Kim is planning a major invasion in the near future (like the Norks have for the last 68 years), selling off ammo and stuff to the Russians is probably a tempting offer. And taking payment in barter (especially foodstuffs) is probably a good deal for both sides.
Though, as pointed out: actually getting shit from NK to Russia (and vice-versa) is another matter.

As a boomer and cold war kid, I’m amazed that this war is being fought between parts of the old Soviet Union, on old USSR territory, and using up vast amounts of old soviet and Russian equipment on both sides. (With western help for the good guys in Ukraine) Sort of a soviet civil war—but it looks like the south is going to win this time.

Odd that the MAGA’ts here are apparently supporting the NORTH for this go-around.

It will be chalked up to a moral failing on the part of the Russian People brought about through decadent Western cultural influence, all the more reason to isolate themselves even further and strive to retain the purity of their Orthodox bodily fluids.

With the exception of the Dr. Strangelove reference, I could see them using a loss as a rationale to further isolate themselves from the Western world - namely, that Russian culture has been severely corrupted by “decadent Western ideas”. They can become a supersized hermit kingdom, along the lines of the DPRK. Maybe even develop a Russian variant of the Juche ideology for good measure.

Of course they’re aware of this. But they can isolate themselves, much like we see in North Korea. They can forbid their citizens from travelling, maybe allowing them to go to so-called “friendly countries”, and forbid Westerners from entering Russia.

They could, if they wanted to, disconnect themselves from the global internet. Indeed, I believe they’ve already got plans in place to do just that.

AN interesting point. To me (amateur military-historian though I only am), the nearest parallel (though not actually that near) in modern history is the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39: i.e., a local conflict used by bigger “outside” powers with an interest in the outcome as a live-fire testing-ground for advanced weapons systems/tactics. Though obviously not a precise example.

The original Dolchstosslegende was that Germany had been betrayed by pacifists, Marxists and Jews.

The Russian version would be that Russia was betrayed by those who’d fallen for the siren song of Western cultural decadence, by young people spoiled by Western consumerism and gaudy baubles - and Russia being Russia, maybe they’ll throw in a passing reference to “cosmopolitans” or “that long-nosed lot” as a wink and a nod to their deeply-rooted anti-Semitism.

Admiral Togo’s flagship Mikasa is still available to serve as a now somewhat neutral venue for a negotiated end to hostilities (or surrender) in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

I suppose we could offer the Missouri as well, though I’d doubt it would be any more acceptable to the Russians.

in re the 2022 Keys Ultramarathon:

British runner Laura Watts ran it for the first time—and finished the 100-miler.
She went-on to finish Badwater 135 in July in excellent time.
You can read her KEYS story in Ultrarunning World magazine, published in the UK.
Download issue 38 here and start on page 52

here’s some of her observations (she’s a 100+ mile pro, I’m just a 31 mile duffer)

…the savage heat and humidity of the Keys

- - Matthew was spraying me with ice-cold water, covering me with ice-cold flannels and Mission Cooling towels which became our ritual at every crew stop. When I left each crew stop with ice in my hat and my neck bandana I remained cool for 10 minutes, then after that I overheated again!

(which is very close to how Team Danger planned and did it)

— that this year’s Keys 100 had exceptional conditions - it was higher than normal humidity and there was a Saharan sand dust hovering in the atmosphere affecting the combined impact of temperature, humidity and intensity of the sun which kept the
relief of rain and thunderstorms away. Either way… it was relentlessly savagely hot and humid

— At mile 32 I arrived at the Kwik Stop Store in Layton where several runners were laid out on the floor with bags of ice on them and we heard 6 people had been taken to hospital with heat-related issues.

— In the post-race email from Bob Becker, Race Director, he wrote, “this past weekend there seemed to be a little something special. Proof? The finishing percentage in the 100-mile individual race, our usual bellwether, was 51.9% - the lowest percentage in race history. Perhaps it was higher than normal humidity. Maybe it was the Saharan sand dust hovering in the atmosphere affecting the combined impact of temperature, humidity and intensity of the sun. Whatever it was, the effort by everyone, on or
along the course or at the finish line, was quite extraordinary.”

We executed Team Danger’s 31 mile plan exactly as, well, planned. I set a PR and came in 8th overall, 6th male. The second oldest runner overall. The oldest runner (65) beat me by 7 minutes and finished fifth.

Three months and I am still ecstatic.
Mostly because I don’t ever have to do it again.

The new German owner of Politico sent an email to his closest executives asking if they should meet up to pray for Donald Trump’s re-election, according to a report. Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner sent the message in the weeks leading up to the 2020 presidential election, according to The Washington Post, a year before his company’s acquisition of Politico in October 2021. “Do we all want to get together for an hour in the morning on November 3 and pray that Donald Trump will again become President of the United States of America?” Döpfner wrote, inspired by an article about the Trump administration taking legal action against Google for abuse of market dominance. Döpfner went on to argue that Trump had made the right call on five of the six biggest issues of the last century—including pursuing peace in the Middle East and “defending the free democracies” from Russia and China—only falling short on climate change. “No American administration in the last 50 years has done more,” he added. When asked about the message, Döpfner initially denied it existed, going so far as to say: “It has never been sent and has never been even imagined.” When confronted with a printout of the email, he explained that he may have sent it “as an ironic, provocative statement in the circle of people that hate Donald Trump.” “That is me,” he added. “That could be.”
Read it at Washington Post
