“Trump Judges Do Not Believe in the Rule of Law” - Legal Expert on Judge Granting Special Master

A Trump-appointed judge granted Donald Trump’s special master request, thereby delaying parts of the Justice Department’s criminal probe. “When you allow Republicans to control the courts you get nothing,” legal expert Elie Mystal says to Joy Reid, adding his view that, “Trump judges do not believe in the rule of law.”

Since Cannon is clearly revealing herself to be a biased hack, does that not basically guarantee the DOJ will easily be able to appeal any ruling she makes?

Arguably, she has already given her ruling, so the time for an amicus brief has passed. At least, that’s what I would assume.

this morning’s electoral-vote.com did give me some degree of comfort:

Was it the right decision, though? Since Cannon was appointed by Trump, there is much supposition that she’s in the bag for him, and is doing his bidding. We are definitely not in a position to weigh in on this question. Luckily, however, reader A.R. in Los Angeles is, as a lawyer who is most certainly not in the bag for Trump. Here’s A.R.’s assessment:

I don’t think it’s entirely out of bounds. The judge is not wrong when she urges some caution in searching a former president’s home—though she doesn’t seem concerned enough with what has already been found there that precipitated the search. But the bottom line is that a special master can be limited to looking only at those documents that may plausibly involve either attorney-client or executive privilege. Once those are identified, the judge can decide two things: (1) whether the privilege is properly invoked; and (2) if it is, whether the DoJ should still get the document.

As the judge herself acknowledged, the privilege claims may ultimately fail, but Trump has a right to raise them. I think the DoJ has to just give this one to Trump. The worst thing they could do, in my humble opinion, is appeal. The Eleventh Circuit is too unpredictable and even if you win, you could end up in front of SCOTUS, which is the last place you want to be—not to mention that would drag everything out for, what, a year at least? Everyone admits the investigation is in the early stages, so a special master won’t derail anything, and this will keep Trump’s attorneys busy through the election. Then, if the judge does something wacky like expanding executive privilege for former presidents, the DoJ can appeal that. But the most likely outcome is they’ll get what they want in the end—it’ll just take longer—just like everything when it comes to TFG.

No comment from Trump’s Border Wall.

“…Last July, police and scientists here were bracing for a new villain—perhaps the deadliest fentanyl cousin yet. “We were hearing about something so dastardly we had to be prepared,” recalls Lakshmi Sammarco, the coroner for Hamilton County, which includes Cincinnati. Carfentanil, an elephant tranquilizer that apparently had never been studied in humans, was showing up mixed into heroin in nearby cities and felling addicts. That month, a Canadian man was arrested in Calgary after authorities intercepted a 1-kilogram package of carfentanil labeled as “printer accessories,” which he had ordered from China.”

Though Beto might do well to at least try to reach out to whatever of these sort of voters might be remotely reachable: like asking this guy exactly why he’d want to bolt his (presumably) native state if it “turns blue”?

I remember Miller as the guy sitting next to Peter Jennings at the ABC anchor desk on 9-11 telling Peter what law enforcement and intelligence sources were telling him about Osama bin Laden being responsible for the attacks. Then I remember him leaving TV to work in antiterrorism operations. So, other than perhaps the perjury about it, his role in surveilling Muslims post-9/11 isn’t all that surprising.

CNN hiring a known perjurer as a contributor for “analysis” is a disgrace.

Academy Award-winning actor Jennifer Lawrence told Vogue that she doesn’t deal with Americans who “aren’t political.”

Said Lawrence: “I’ve tried to get over it and I really can’t. I can’t. I’m sorry I’m just unleashing, but I can’t fuck with people who aren’t political anymore. You live in the United States of America. You have to be political. It’s too dire. Politics are killing people.”

She added: “It breaks my heart because America had the choice between a woman and a dangerous, dangerous jar of mayonnaise. And they were like, ‘Well, we can’t have a woman. Let’s go with the jar of mayonnaise.’”

She’s right
Even though more people voted for the woman we ended up with the rancid mayonnaise that would likely kill us

Too bad, so sad.

Actually, I’m going to proffer a dissenting opinion: which ties into the piece I commented on above about the “retired oil worker” - I think that if the pollution issue (and it was AIR pollution the oil terminal project was seeking relief for) could be resolved - and I’m guessing it’s likely a cost (i.e. profit-margin) issue rather than a technical one (??) - then having another major export terminal in a major oil-producing region is, IMO, a Good Thing. Since I think that, while completely “moving away” from fossil fuels is a worthwhile goal, it is at least decades away from being even remotely practicable in the US, and that, in the meanwhile, if we can even partially transition enough to renewables, it will then free up our (still-considerable) petroleum reserves for export. Because, yeah: overuse of fossil fuels is a global, rather than a local/regional issue: but the hard fact remains that oil and gas are still going to be valuable commodities for the foreseeable future: and that that value can be exploited domestically.

(CNN)Zayon Martinez spent his final hour of second grade hiding under a desk while bullets flew through Robb Elementary School.

By the end of the carnage, 19 of his schoolmates and two teachers were killed. Now Zayon, who’s supposed to start third grade Tuesday, doesn’t want to set foot in another classroom, his father said.

“I went and talked to my son and I told him, ‘They’re gonna have more cops. They’re gonna have higher fencing. And he wasn’t having it,” said Zayon’s father, Adam Martinez.
“He said, ‘It doesn’t matter. They’re not gonna protect us.’”

Zayon’s fear is not unfounded. Since the tragic end to the last school year, the grief enveloping Uvalde, Texas, has been compounded by outrage.

Uvalde children return to school after 21 students and teachers were slaughtered. But some kids refuse to go back to classrooms (CNN)

In what universe? The one that denies women the right to vote I am guessing.

The special elections thus far have been insightful as to what people are thinking, and they’re not happy with SCOTUS or the GOP and stripping women of their bodily autonomy and health care choices/access.

Same GOP that claims Democrats are making it more expensive due to inflation (a worldwide phenomenon and one that is actually not as bad in the US as elsewhere), distract from fact that the GOP make health care more expensive - whether it’s seeking abortions, health insurance, or anything else a person might need - education, water, shelter, etc.

I think Jordan’s problem (just one of a raft of them, I know!) is one common to virtually all Republicans currently in office: they view themselves as only beholden to A) their donors and B) their own core of partisan voters: and thanks to decades of creative gerrymandering and the fixation of said said partisans on relying SOLELY on biased right-wing media for their “information” (media which hacks like Jordan exclusively frequent, since they know they will get only support, approval and softball questions), he might be right in thinking that fullthroated support for Dobbs, and rigid anti-abortion obsessionism is the way to electoral success in those MAGA districts, and/or really “red” states. The drawback, though, of course, is that the larger the polity, and the more diverse the electorate - say, at the state level vs. individual CDs - the advocacy of truly unpopular positions can come back to bite them. Not that most GOPer Congresscritters really care: as long as their seats (and cashflow and influence) aren’t affected, they could care less.

So yeah, Jim: run on a platform of curtailing peoples’ (i.e. womens’) rights even further: you can maybe rise even further in a more-diminished Minority….

re: #19 Dangerman

this morning’s electoral-vote.com did give me some degree of comfort:

but then there’s this:

Andrew Weissmann:
“One of the most dispiriting aspects of the decision yesterday by Federal District Court Judge Aileen Cannon—which granted former President Donald Trump’s request to appoint a special master to review the evidence seized from Mar-a-Lago by the FBI—is that it undermines the work of all the other judges who have tried to adhere to their oath to ‘administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and … faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent’ on the office.”

“Her ruling is untethered to the law and presents a skewed recitation of the facts. Her actions make the question ‘Who appointed the judge?’ a sadly relevant one in evaluating a judicial opinion.”

I understand that, but I also was under the impression the opposition party did not have their shit together either at this point…which prompted my question.

Even if Kiwifarms went down for good, these assholes would just create some other site and continue on harassing people.

I think the point of all of this is that no, they can’t.

What’s to stop them? They’ll just register some other domain name somewhere and resume their bullshit until it inevitably causes them to get booted from that service. Later, rinse, repeat.

Either set up a Windows XP machine, or install a lot of shady software on a Win 10 machine until your Internet usage goes up to signal you’re on the botnet.

It may not be the right botnet.

Each repeat loses them users who can’t find the new cesspool. It also makes the person running the site crazier and they’ll lash out causing themselves more trouble.

At the very least, each time they get kicked reminds them that they’re totally unacceptable to normal people.

Yeah, MAKE THEM WORK FOR THEIR EVIL.

It’s incumbent on the good guys to not make it easy for evil. Keep it small and as weak as possible.
