So this nonsense has been circulating for awhile in the Fascist forums that attract Trump followers.

Interesting point by, of all people, Michael Cohen, on Joy Reid this evening.

She asked him to speculate on why tfg stole the classified documents. He believes that the goal was to extort the US. Basically, he would have them released if he or his family was indicted.

Cohen starts around 6:30 and Joy Reid asks him to speculate at 8:32

Asshole in Memphis is on a shooting spree. Apparently a 19-year-old, already wanted for murder, started at the University of Memphis and is heading towards Arkansas. 2 dead, 1 seriously injured and at least 3 more unknown condition. U of M is on lockdown, Delta fair is on lockdown, but people can leave (which makes no sense). The kid is filming it on Facebook live. Because of course Facebook let’s him.

Hearing about this from my GF (who is safe at home) not on new yet that I’ve seen.

Interesting point made by Tim Snyder discussing the concept that self-rule is part of the identity of Ukrainians. That Putin is attacking Ukraine to destroy that self-identity. And that the Ukrainians are willing to fight and die to preserve that self-identity.

It is striking, isn’t it, how close the ideas of self-rule and survival can be? Is it possible, for example, to imagine the United States of America without the idea of democracy? Our democracy, too, is flawed. But there are Americans, most Americans I’d like to think, who believe that they have the right to choose their rulers, and that journalism and civil society are a natural and normal part of political life.

Yet in the United States we face a situation in which our basic instuition that we deserve self-rule is challenged — not by foreign invasion, but by the actions of some of our own politicians. One of our presidents tried to stay in power after losing an election, and most of his political party continues to live in his big lie. The failed violent coup of 2021 is very likely to be followed by a stealthier version in 2024: a soft coup in which votes are not counted and in which states choose their own electors, regardless of how people vote, with the Supreme Court assuring us that we never really had a right to choose our leaders anyway.

Unsurprisingly, the Putin regime tried to help Donald Trump get elected in 2016 and in 2020, and celebrated the coup attempt of 2021. Self-rule rises and falls internationally. But the most important actors in America are Americans. The most important opponents of self-rule in America are Americans. It was Americans who attempted regime change in 2021, and, if we do not change course, it will be Americans (with tyrants around the world cheering in the background) who will attempt regime change in 2025.

Just checking in …

We arrived in Pittsfield, Mass. to stay overnight. Now if I don’t run into anyone here from when I was a Navy Recruiter thirty years ago, I should be fine.

It was a regular pain to put my update information about our trip into ArriveCAN from here.

My laptop won’t work with the hotel printer, I could not log into my E-mail account from my wife’s Website on the hotel computer. I wound up E-mailing the ArriveCAN printout to the hotel, then the manager printed out the information.

ArriveCAN wants your arrival time at the border within three days of arriving, and bracketing a one-hour period where you will arrive. I’m not sure I can plan a drive that close.

I also had my first actual Philly cheesesteak, at a small restaurant in southern Pennsylvania. The cook is a Philly native so I’m guessing that’s a lot closer than anything I could get in Scottsbluff.

Holy crap that was a lot of rain to drive through today. A lot of my trip was under forty miles-per-hour.

Randy Quaid was Cousin Eddy in the National Lampoon’s vacation films, most famous for the Christmas film where he has a large bore hose out of his RV into a street side rainwater collection pipe and says to Chevy Chase’s Clark “Shitter’s full”.

Maybe I should see that movie. It came out when I was in college, and it was making Turkey sound like a very scary place, almost causing me to forgo my opportunity to go there. I’m glad I went. My first night in Istanbul, I met a Turkish man who called himself ‘Tony’ who said, ‘That movie makes us look bad. It makes it look like Turks are all violent. I hate that movie! I want to kill the guy who made it!’ He also said not to go to the Grand Bazaar, it was just a tourist trap. Of course we went, and saw Tony again, at work.

I’m off to bed. Post office in the morning to mail bill payments (creditors don’t seem to accept the excuse “on vacation”), then off to Vermont and New Hampshire.

The New York State Thruway has gone to rolling tolls and no toll collectors. They threaten to suspend your registration if you don’t contact them within a day of your photo being taken at the toll booth to pay the toll. I’d be happy to pay the toll if they did something to provide information how to do that other than a * number to dial on a cell phone.

I suspect this will go about as well as Massachusetts and Colorado photo toll booths. They have no idea how to track down my plate, with about ten thousand different plates in the USA.

Illinois provided a slip of paper to mail in for the toll on Interstate 88. That’s too much trouble for NY, MA, and CO I guess.

Billy: Of course! But they were afraid of that. They would allow their main character to bite someone’s tongue out but not touch another human being. That says a lot about the producers, but that’s a whole other can we don’t need to get into. The biggest thing for me was the courtroom scene, where Oliver Stone wrote: “You’re a nation of pigs, I fuck your sons, I fuck your daughters.” In truth I said, all “I can I do is forgive you.”

So early Thursday, I posted a comment on the Tennessee antiabortion law on my FB page and eventually got a comment from a very religious anti-choice (Republican of course) friend of mine who challenged my assertion about the law — oh no — every anti-choice state has exceptions if the woman’s life is at risk. I pointed out the infamous case of Savita Halappanavar and his reaction? “We aren’t in Ireland.” Sigh — too many Americans have this mythical belief that we’re the best at everything.

I hope the Democrats hammer home that if the GOP takes over, they will ban abortion everywhere. It’s even possible with the right case that SCOTUS could do the job for them by supporting a fetal personhood law, which I think the Tennessee law includes.

The Ukrainians are on what looks like a Blitzkrieg offensive against the Russians in the northeast of the country:

Seems like the Russians were expecting a Ukrainian offensive in the Kherson area, and moved men and materiel to reinforce it, leaving their forces spread too thin in other sectors. And the Ukrainians are now exploiting that while they can.

That is how Putin sees it, as a “civil war” between the ethic Russians living in the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces and the Ukrainian state.

Which is one way of framing it (if that frame of reference somehow omits the presence of Russian forces in Ukraine)

From the NY Post:

A crazed gunman was arrested after killing four people and injuring three others in a series of shootings in Memphis Wednesday — including one that he live streamed on Facebook, police said.

Ezekiel Kelly, 19, who has a violent criminal record, launched his alleged rampage just before 1 a.m. and terrorized the city until after dusk when he was caught during a police chase at about 9:30 p.m., according to authorities.

Officials said numerous felony charges are pending against him.

“This has been a horrific week for the city of Memphis,” the city’s police chief, Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis, said at a late Wednesday press briefing announcing Kelly’s alleged shooting spree.

Memphis police first warned the public to stay away from Kelly, whom they said was “armed and dangerous” in a 7 p.m. social media post.

Police have since connected the alleged killer to at least eight separate shootings, Davis said.

snip

In June 2020, Kelly was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment and aggravated assault, according to public records.

He was sentenced to three years, but was released this year on March 16 after serving just 11 months, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said.

The mayor slammed the courts for Kelly’s early release.

“If Mr. Kelly served his full three-year sentence, he would still be in prison today and four of our fellow citizens would still be alive,” Strickland said.

It’s unclear why Kelly was released early.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unscheduled visit to Kyiv on Thursday as the Biden administration announced major new military aid worth more than $2 billion for Ukraine and other European countries threatened by Russia.

In meetings with senior Ukrainian officials, Blinken said the Biden administration had notified Congress of its intent to provide $2 billion in long-term Foreign Military Financing to Ukraine and 18 of its neighbors, including NATO members and regional security partners, that are “most potentially at risk for future Russian aggression.”

Hurricane Kay has taken a bit of a rightward leg, not a major move, but I wonder how it will affect our rain chances.

Forecast is still for considerable rain in the mountains of San Diego County, but west of the mountains, where most of the people live, will likely only get around .75” or so.

GFS is still predicting about an inch of rain west of the mountains:

European model is a bit more generous, expecting a bit over an inch, and also predicting more rain for the LA basin:

His lie isn’t that he’s not running to change the constitutional right. He’s not, at least, not directly. He’s running to get other people to change it for him, because he himself, personally, does not have the authority to do so. He is all in favor of restricting abortions in the State of Minnesota, and is on the record saying so; he is only saying otherwise now because he knows that here, in one of the more liberal bastions of the United States, that is a losing position to take. My guess is, he’s seen internal polls that see our wildly popular governor getting re-elected fairly handily, and is trying to walk back the crazy in a last-ditch effort to gain some votes in the middle.

spy45 et al dont know all the details of what was in the boxes the fbi took
he wasnt that organized. it wasnt documented, cataloged, etc.

if he was he cuold have argued docs x, y,z, etc s/b covered on atty/client priv or whatever

but he cant identify anything specific

so a special master is appointed (as if)

how such an appointment could possible determine whether something is covered by *exec* privilege is beyond me.

still, say the master rules there is little or no privileged docs (either kind)

how does spy45 react?
special master was his idea
he agreed to the choice (judge’s ruling)

There is only one way for the Special Master to determine if documents are covered by executive privilege, and that is by asking the executive, President Biden.

re: #193 No Malarkey!

Why is it that every news outlet worries itself over whether Garland should indict Trump on espionage and stealing/mishandling of classified info.

What’s the precedent set by NOT doing that.

That’s the bigger question.

Trump is a private citizen. He possessed classified documents he was not entitled to have at the time of the seizures by the FBI. That’s a felony and anyone else who was caught with those documents would have been arrested and perp walked at the same time those documents were seized.

The miscarriage of justice is the delay in prosecuting Trump on these crimes (as opposed to all the other crimes for which Trump should be indicted and prosecuted).

Interesting twist in the race for ND’s lone house seat. The Dem-NPL nominee Mark Haugen dropped out of the race a few days ago citing pressure from his own party. It came out after he won the nomination that he’s pro-life - during the convention the choice was essentially between him and a full-throated libertarian.

Cara Mund announced entering the race as a pro-choice independent after SCOTUS ruling on Roe. The Republican candidate is incumbent Kelly Armstrong. Cara Mund has quite the background - local from Bismarck, cum laude degree from Harvard Law, 2018 Miss America, interned for Republican ND Senator John Hoeven in 2016, trained with the Rockettes for four years, and wrote an open letter while Miss America to the Miss America Organization criticizing them for their empty rhetoric on empowering women (in Jan 2020 leadership was removed). She had been leaning towards caucusing with the Republicans if she won but that now, “I don’t think I have a choice,” referring to an NDGOP rule which prohibits candidates who have run as independents from seeking the party’s endorsement for six years.

Also she felt her father’s life was cut short by having to be king during WWII thanks to her Uncle’s abdication. As a result she opposes the concept.

The ads here are relentless and both annoying and hilarious. There aren’t many Dem primaries, so almost entirely on the GOP/covert Libertarian side. This morning over and over:

Matt Mowers ad: “Katherine Leavitt is an immature young liberal posing as a conservative” (She had some minor position in Trump’s WH)

Outside PAC: “Matt Mowers came up from Maryland to run as a conservative, but he’s a liberal who believes in ‘green’ energy.”

It’s a race to the end of the horseshoe.

“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

A large oak fell down in the neighborhood park due to storm damage about 10 years ago.

My daughter, 5 at the time, was saddened and wanted to do something about it. So we gathered a few acorns, filtered them for worm damage (put in a glass of water - the ones that float are bad), put them in the fridge for the winter (stratification), planted them in little cups in early spring, then planted and protected the seedlings from deer. We’ve been doing that most years since. There are now about 25 oak trees scattered throughout the yard and the park with the largest ones being maybe 10 feet tall now.

Those trees, the wildflowers in the park she planted via a city-sponsored program, and the playgrounds she helped build will keep her connected to this place.

One of the most exciting moments of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was seeing Sir Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Professor Xavier. Even though he was a different timeline version of the character, and was mercilessly killed by the Scarlet Witch, it let fans of the MCU know that mutants are certainly going to be part of Marvel. Fans have been clamoring for the X-Men to make their debut, and that might be happening quite soon. However, through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that Ian McKellen will be returning in Secret Wars as Magneto.

MCU’s already feeling kind of bloated. Not sure adding mutants back into the mix will result in something better.

Film Marvel is speedrunning the problem with comicbook Marvel: You can’t keep telling stories where the escalation should mean that things and characters should change… drastically…but the demands of franchise are that the setting and the characters can’t change too much, bend too far beyond a comfy status quo.

Elizabeth II’s reign spanned more than one era, when one sees the connections (via BBC)

Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

And the Administrations of fourteen US Presidents: Harry Truman was POTUS when she took the throne in 1952 (and I think she met all of them, except for Harry S….)

I don’t know about stability, but it’s convenient to have someone to perform all the ceremonial functions of a head of state, while leaving the “real” work for someone else. Saves wear and tear on the head of government.

If I were really naughty, I’d start a rumor that “Charles III” is a secret Roman Catholic… 😉 Good thing I’m not famous enough to be believed!

Germans have a President who does all that; the office is purely representative and holds no political powers. The Prez is elected by Parliament and is generally selected to be above party politics.

She’s better-looking than the portrait captures, but that’s not what that loon is talking about.

What is he talking about exactly? He’s clearly a terrible person but did not see any followup comments from him on his issues with this portrait. The portrait did not seem as though it captured her essence; the features seemed wrong to me.

Presidential systems tend to end badly. Since both the legislature and the president are elected, both have claim to a mandate from the voters. So when the voters elect the opposition into control of the legislature, you get gridlock, and if the gridlock can’t be resolved electorally, it can eventually leads to coups. With a ceremonial head of state selected through a process inherently lacking in political input, the legislative majority has an unquestionable mandate to govern.

Autodefenestration: In which a person throws themselves out of a window.

Exactly. Because, as we all know thugs who “don’t” work for Putin thugs would never shoot someone and then throw the body out of the window, and flood the floor with soap water, so that it looked like someone accidentally shot themselves “in the back of the head”, slipped, and fell through a bad window.

In the original defenestration, the Defenstration of Prague, the defenestrated individuals reportedly survived by landing in a pile of manure.

WTFITS

Well, shit. We lived in Stafford in an old farmhouse in 1965 for three or four months waiting for Quarters to open up at Quantico when my Da was attending Command and Staff College. It literally abutted the Quantico Range where little shave-tail Butterbars ran around the woods learning about small-unit tactics. It was great for us kids. Bucolic. We picked wild Asparagus. We had a Party Line! My dad bought a used Renault as a work car he called “de Gaulle’s Revenge”.

Aqua Harbor Golf and Country Club was immediately east of us on the Potomac River. It is apparently run by tasteless MAGA idiots.
