Egregious Philbin  Sep 11, 2022 • 9:47:32pm

Remnants of hurricane Kay hit with a vengance, major microburst over the house. Tried to sweep as much water off the patio, but it got to the door and about 3 feet into the house. Broke my big broom, one broom left. Had to get the wet vac to try to suck up the stuff in the house. All while my beloved slept happily in the other room. Lightning or something struck a transformer in the alley, sparks everywhere. Yeah, we need the rain, but oy, I spent all day trying to get the pool out of green hell…..

Terry Pratchett on monarchy, for a little light relief:
“The only thing known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy, according to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle. He reasoned like this: you can’t have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles — kingons, or possibly queons — that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expanded because, at that point, the bar closed.”

LOL the worm (in Minsk) turns…..

(Translation: “God knows, this quarrel was not worth it”: Lukashenko said he was ready to return the ambassador to Kiev

According to the president, as a peace-loving person wise over the years, he has always advocated good neighborly relations with Ukraine and is ready to take the first step towards it.)

Lukashenko realizes the jig is up.

Off to work - back later today.

His visit will turn out to be something pedestrian — and not involving any of the investigations unless it is to see a new attorney who is willing to represent him.

Allied websites should be checked for the propaganda filter too. In this case this is a part of Solovyev’s plea *not* to focus on the fact that some military bosses deserve punishments (from firing to execution). And to say someone deserves something is not a call for application. I feel like many people deserve to be executed, yet I’m against capital punishment.

I.e. the thrust of the message is the opposite of what the propaganda message claims. Solvyev is calming down the patriots. And literally does not do what the website claims he does.

The only method I know is to not take at face value the short bits one sees at Twitter and to go to the source. Already from InfoResist’s screenshot it was clear that their interpretation was skewed, and some twitter guy merely increased the distortion level. And the nature of the primary source must be checked too, otherwise there’s a risk of posting something from the Russian Onion, like the Lukashenko satire above.

This part didn’t appear in the InfoResist item.

When is anything ever pedestrian with Donald Trump? This is a man who slapped his son so hard that he fell to the ground for thinking he could attend a Mets game in a college sweater and blue jeans rather than a suit and tie. He’s all about appearances, all about looking like (if not actually being) the biggest swinging dick in the room, so if he’s showing up dressed like he just got yanked off the golf course, then odds are that’s what actually happened. The lack of any grandstanding or pomp and circumstance is also totally out of character for the man. IMHO, the assessment that he’s not there willingly is probably close to if not totally on the mark.

Okay, thanks.

Look, I do appreciate the context and translation you added in these cases. I find your insight, expertise, and knowledge extremely helpful. And I am glad that you post here.

But rejecting and ignoring everything because someone somewhere might be lying or misrepresenting something is not going to work for me.

Generally, I expect that the information in a tweet might be incomplete, misrepresented or misunderstood. I try to look at the credibility of the tweeter and source. And I try to understand that this is a human endeavor that is likely to require multiple iterations to get somewhat close to an accurate understanding.

I posted this because there has been a lot of discussion on the possible results of a major Russian defeat in Ukraine. Particularly if it makes Putin personally vulnerable.

Obviously, Putin and his inner circle are completely opaque to outsiders like me. But that does not mean that possible consequences won’t affect me.

Even if Trump is in DC to get checked out by Walter Reed, it’s still significant enough to take notice. Obviously he’s well enough to deboard the plane and walk to a car, but how bad can it be that he felt it necessary to fly to Walter Reed on a Sunday evening in total radio silence?

Appreciate that info.

In the Army there is something called “Reconnaissance by fire”. Basically, if you do not know where the enemy is, you go forward of your lines and fire some shots. The return fire tells you where they are.

Here, if one doesn’t know where the problem lies, just put it out there. And one is pretty much guaranteed to get a lot of input.

Wow.

The nurse facing murder charges for the fiery Los Angeles crash that killed five was going 130 mph - it was revealed on Sunday - 40 miles faster than previously thought.

Nicole Linton, 37, was initially thought to be driving her Mercedes at 90 mph, but court papers obtained by the Los Angles Times on Sunday said she floored the pedal for at least five seconds before deliberately speeding into La Brea and Slauson avenues on Aug. 4.

“Further analysis reveals that her speed at impact was in fact 130 mph and that she floored the gas pedal for at least the 5 seconds leading into the crash, going from 122 mph to 130 mph,” said the filing, which was released on Friday.

Prosecutors laid waste to the claims that she lost consciousness by citing surveillance video and data from her Mercedes. The documents said Linton had “complete control over steering, maintaining the tilt of the steering wheel to keep her car traveling directly toward the crowded intersection.”

I wonder if this might also have been a way to get Trump out of Florida real quickly for some odd reason; e.g. he does not have to be in D.C., but he needs to not be at MAL or in Florida. Though I’d more than half expect in that case he’d have gone to NJ and stayed at one of his golf courses there.

I did say, if he got arrested, he wouldn’t be perp-walked in front of the media. However, I highly doubt he’s been arrested yet. The most plausible theory, to me, is that he got a grand jury summons along with the rest of the MAGAt bunch, in relation to 1/6. That doesn’t quite explain why he’d show up as if he was fresh off the golf course, though.

You’d think he’d have another pair of shoes to change into on the plane or something. At least if he’d planned that flight, he probably would have. Trump is an avid golfer and he knows that wearing golf shoes on a surface other than the fairway is a bad idea.

I was out surfing yesterday afternoon here in Waikiki - caught one good wave, rode it for a good 45 seconds (love that about the waves here) - and as I was paddling in I ran into a guy on a board (long gray hair like mine) and he said, “It’s not as easy as it looks!” so I rested and chatted with him for a few minutes - geezer to geezer.

Nice fellow. I told him a bit about who to watch and copy to get a chance to catch a wave and then said Waikiki was so much easier than my break at home. He asked where that was and I said ‘Half Moon Bay’ - and he asked where that was and I said ‘California.’ He said he was from Illinois and it’s pretty flat so he doesn’t see a lot of ocean. I chuckled and said, “Yes, but at least James McMurtry writes songs about you.” He thought for a sec, smiled, and nodded his head.

It’s nice to make a new friend even though you’ll probably never see them again.

Had dinner at Roy’s with our friend who just bought a surf condo here in Honolulu. I’ve been to Roy’s in Pebble Beach at the hotel/golf place in Spanish Bay - lovely Hawaiian food - not cheap. But we almost walked out last night due to the lack of ambiance. I mean, if you’re going to pay over $100 per person for a nice meal (after adding cocktails and appetizers) you want to feel like you’re in a nice place…but they don’t set the tables until there are people at them so the place felt like an empty conference room at a Courtyard Marriott.

BTW: in discussion with Spousal Unit last night, the subject came up of TFG’s claim that he had actually gotten an honorary knighthood from the late Queen Elizabeth, but that it had had to remain “secret” for some reason.

The question isn’t whether or not Trump’s claim is true - we both dismiss it as the usual stupid lying bullshit is undoubtedly is - but whether or not he actually made that claim (likely on his own mendacious site), or was this just another Internet Rumor?

Not that it’s beyond credibility to believe that The Orange Anus would have the gall to make that sort of insulting claim; I just haven’t seen any credible confirmation of it….

Looks like it’s just Joe and the First Lady going to the Queens Funeral. At least as far as official government representation is concerned:

(CNN)Buckingham Palace did not invite President Joe Biden to assemble a delegation to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II next week, and instead extended a specific invitation for only the President and first lady, a White House official told CNN.

The White House announced Sunday that Biden had formally accepted the invitation and would be accompanied by the first lady.

Previous state funerals, such as the one for former South African president Nelson Mandela, have allowed for the sitting president to bring a delegation of officials to the event.

Gas prices keep plunging

Another GQP talking point destroyed.

Why it matters: Average national gasoline prices hit $5.02 a gallon back in June, amplifying the national fixation on inflation.

Driving the news: According to AAA, a gallon of regular was an average of $3.74 on Friday, more than 25% lower than the June peak.

Yes, but: Not everyone’s experience at the pump will mirror the national average.

California typically has some of the most expensive gas because the state requires refiners to produce a blend that meets more stringent anti-pollution requirements than much of the rest of the country.

California also has higher than average gasoline taxes, which add to the cost at the pump.

What we’re watching: The futures prices for “reformulated blendstock for oxygenate blending,” or RBOB. This wholesale gasoline benchmark tends to move in advance of the retail gasoline prices you see while filling up.

Yep. Via NBC:

Deaf people watching the Nelson Mandela memorial were bemused and shocked by a “fake” sign language interpreter on stage whose gestures were unintelligible, activists said Wednesday.

The interpreter was watched by millions as he stood beside speakers at the event including President Barack Obama.

Hundreds of people took to social media to express their anger at the interpreter’s gestures, and several deaf groups confirmed his signing did not reflect the comments being made to honor the anti-apartheid icon.

“Consumer sentiment, which hit rock bottom in June, has begun inching up in recent weeks. Gas prices are down. Decades-high inflation appears to be easing. And at the same time, Americans are making small changes — buying meat in bulk, for example, or shifting more of their shopping to discount chains — suggesting that many families are learning to deal with higher prices.”

there are obvious personal exceptions because the president sometimes is just a private person and not acting as president - (you know, like he claimed he was on 1/6)

but mundanely,
say a birthday card he wrote to a relative (as if)
or even a personal diary, like Reagan had
clearly personal

But we almost walked out last night due to the lack of ambiance. I mean, if you’re going to pay over $100 per person for a nice meal (after adding cocktails and appetizers) you want to feel like you’re in a nice place…but they don’t set the tables until there are people at them so the place felt like an empty conference room at a Courtyard Marriott.

What a Ukrainian Victory Means
September 12, 2022 at 10:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Francis Fukuyama: “If the Ukrainians don’t simply hold out against Russia but actually defeat Russia’s massive army and force it to retreat, the positive reverberations will be felt across the globe. Populist nationalists around the world, from Viktor Orbán to Matteo Salvini to Marine Le Pen to Donald Trump, have expressed admiration for Putin’s style of strongman rule. A Russian defeat and humiliation will puncture this narrative of the advantages of authoritarian government, and might lead to a rekindling of democratic self-confidence.”

“It has been easy for publics in Western democracies to take for granted the peace and prosperity brought about by the liberal world order. It may be the case that every generation needs to relearn the lesson that the alternatives to liberal democracy lead to violence, repression, and ultimately economic failure. Such a lesson will be driven home if the world sees brave Ukrainians fighting for their country succeed beyond all expectations.”

With the observation that, as much as I would like/prefer Fukuyama to be right, I think that he is being a tad over-optimistic here: that word “might” is the key. Unfortunately, a Russian defeat in Ukraine is just as likely to spur those authoritarian “populist nationalists” to simply change their narratives slightly (and shift the blame to “Russia” in general, or “Putin” specifically), and keep on doing what they are doing domestically.

“right now things are going very, very badly” for the Ukrainians and they’re “desperate,” “they’re losing once again just south of Kharkiv.”

vs just the first line which considers how bad things actually are for Russia and thus musing about winning Ukraine scenarios

“If the Ukrainians don’t simply hold out against Russia but actually defeat Russia’s massive army and force it to retreat”

The problem with republicans, in one paragraph

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) — who has called Senate frontrunner Don Bolduc (R) a “conspiracy theorist type” and not “a serious candidate” — told the Washington Post that he’ll endorse Bolduc nonetheless against Sen. Maggie Hassan (D) if he wins the primary.

to follow on
it’s not just sununu sitting on the side lines as the above implies

“An intramural Republican fight over New Hampshire’s nominee for the Senate entered its final day on Monday with Gov. Chris Sununu and national Republicans working furiously to try to block a Trump-style 2020 election denier, Don Bolduc, whom they perceive as too extreme to win in November,” the New York Times reports.

and then he’ll still vote for him

Do you think he will make his $1 Billion investment back?

And with the first season of a five-season run costing an estimated $465 million US (subsequent seasons, though still wildly expensive, could require slightly reduced budgets as producers will be able to use existing construction and costumes), Rings of Power may conservatively cost the studio in excess of $1 billion US.

The only reasonable response to Trump saying this is to tell him that he’s insane and run to the media. Instead, no one involved ran to the media, and we get another book we’re supposed to be dumb enough to buy, rewarding a reporter for holding back critical information.

Donald Trump queried aides — including the valet who brought his Diet Cokes to the Oval Office — on whether he should refuse to leave office after losing the 2020 presidential election, according to a book from a New York Times reporter.

CNN reported Monday on the details from reporter Maggie Haberman’s book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America,” which is due for publication on October 4.

Trump, Haberman writes, told aides that he would refuse to leave office after losing the 2020 election. He told one, “I’m not going to leave,” and declared to another that “we’re never leaving,” adding, “how can you leave when you won an election?”

Trump even asked the valet tasked with delivering his Diet Cokes directly to his desk in the Oval Office about what steps and strategies to take in contesting the 2020 election, according to the book.

Trump queried the valet who brought him his Diet Cokes on how he could stay in office after the 2020 election, book says (BI)

Entertainment like Rings of Power (and She Hulk, etc.) are now battle grounds in our culture war. That is why so much hate is directed at RoP.

I think the first three episodes of RoP are fine.

But I don’t like pretty much any TV these days and most cinema leaves me uninterested or worse. (I especially dislike the MCU.) All because I am now old and crotchety, and see so much entertainment these days as shallow.

RoP tries to reach a very high bar and sometimes (in the first three episodes) reaches it, and sometimes it doesn’t. Mostly I think it is let down by trying to fit into the current trend of having a show be filled with mystery-boxes.

I like the cast, I like the storylines. It’s a visual delight and the soundtrack is solid. I’d prefer simpler episodes with just an A and B plot, not four running plots at the same time. But again, I’m old and think that _Maverick_ was fun and the last episodic TV that I enjoyed was _Stargate SG-1_ .

All this latter cable/streaming TV efforts, like _Walking Dead_ , or shows like _Lost_ (which I could never get past the first half of episode 1), with intricate mystery boxes or excessive gore, all are turn-offs to me.

So yes, RoP is fine, I’m interested in the next episode.

Amazon’s goal for it is to get Prime members who don’t use Prime Video or have not done so in a while, to consume Prime Video. We’ll know how many American homes are watching it when the Nielsen ratings come out, but streaming ratings are three-week delayed.

Some people have to inject race and gender issues into everything.

I recall in the mid sixties when my older sister’s High School put on The Feminine Mistaque, a musical in which the girls all dressed as men and the boys as women.

It was all seen as a big laugh and light-hearted entertainment, nobody walked out in a huff or protested or threated either divine or 2A-based retribution for it.

The two big ND public colleges (NDSU & UND) start off with only 40.6% (NDSU) and 39% (UND) of their students being originally from ND (both are just across the Red River from MN and even out of state tuition is relatively cheap). So, I’m surprised when I see that more than 50% of graduates stay in ND and not ENLIGHTENED that so many leave.

I’m the tech doc around here, but that’s exactly how I fixed mrsdm’s computer this am

I talked to him at the end. Something wiped out the entire windows folder on the Windows 19 server. He can rebuild it, it’s just going take a while getting all of their software back up.

A:
1. Tucker rents his guests from Schmucks-R-Us: he must have a standing account there (on Fox’s tab, natch).

2. If this was Friday: then it’s already been reported and roundly mocked: many of Carlson’s recent guests seem to have been Senior Fellows at the al-Sahaf Institute for Media Denialism*.

The interesting thing about that chart is that it reflect how likely grads are to move. The top states are just going to keep getting larger.

Look at the bottom. There’s an option to upgrade to 16 as well. Assuming your device supports it.

Or depends on how many people sign up for Prime and how other stuff they buy. It’s not all about one show.

Tillamook
makes Cheddar, and Swiss, and cheese curds, although it looks like you have to go there for those.
