I’m so old I remember when Ted Cruz thought the Russian army was unbeatable because they weren’t “woke.”

There’s been some talk about how the first main troops were Asian and that the bulk of the new mobilization seems to be falling unequally on rural provinces nearer to Central Asia than Moscow. That’s pretty unwoke.

85F + 38%RH feels so much different than 85F +70%RH.

We’re in a warming trend here and it will peak in SoCal in Monday/Tuesday.

While it feels good to be this dry I will say that looking out my window at the once-green things that we really need rain but it now seems unlikely until deep into autumn.

This Eleanor Roosevelt quote should be on the wall of every newsroom, congress office—hell, every fucking home in this country.

“I have the feeling that we let our consciences realize too late the need of standing up against something that we knew was wrong. We have therefore had to avenge it, but we did nothing to prevent it. I hope that in the future, we are going to remember that there can be no compromise at any point with the things that we know are wrong.”

I have been giving out KitKat bars for Halloween since I moved to my house.

There are two reasons.

First, Costco sells them, so it is easy to get 1-2 boxes of them.

Second, if I have some left over, they are about the only candy I enjoy eating more than 1 bar a year.

I’m confused. Today was Sept 24th (Or will be for the next 1.5 hours EDT) According QAnon, Putin was supposed to fire a nuclear missile, or a massive sun flare was supposed to cause a Carrington Event, or the Deep state was supposed to be overthrown. I didn’t see any of that happening.

It’s almost like the same thing that happened after the last zillion apocalypse predictions… Nothing…

My grandfather, a Missouri farmer, used to laugh about the “Old Mossback Farmers” who would get a casket and sit by it, waiting for the predicted apocalypse. And how this happened over and over again.

They were in student govt. together, they were MEChA members together. He’s a lawyer now, married to another classmate, with 2 kids. He cried on the phone while I was telling him. It was great. I kept talking and he kept crying. He asked, ‘If there’s anything I can do…’ I said, ‘You’ve done great.’

I was crazy about The Last Unicorn when I was an impressionable teenager

For some reason I totally missed his works. Probably part of my oblivious childhood.

He has certainly been very creative. And, according to the wiki article, from quite a creative family. I hadn’t realized that he also graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. (Although I was probably about 5 years old at the time.)

I found this quote of his strikes a chord:

“There’s a phrase, “sitzfleisch”, which means just plain sitting on your ass and getting it done. Just showing up for work. My uncle Raphael was a painter, and he used to say, “If the muse is late for work, start without her”. You have to be there. You have to be there, and do it, and grind it out, even when it is grinding and you know you’re probably going to rewrite all this tomorrow.”

Went to the alma mater with my brother tonight to see a college football game for the first time in several years. Lenoir-Rhyne knocked off Carson-Newman 34-13 to improve to 3-1 for the season. The only loss is to top-ranked Ferris State , the defending Division II national champion. L-R did an $18-million stadium renovation, and it shows. We currently have 2 players in the NFL - including a starting defensive back for New England (Kyle Dugger), though he might not play Sunday due to injury.

Seriously thinking about upgrading to a fancy coffee machine after I get back. Every hotel has given me a great range from espresso to cappuccino to americano, all excellent. The automated factor would be a plus for Ms RedState

Now’s your chance to buy in a spot on the upcoming superyacht M/Y Njord. Prices start at a mere $8.5 million USD.

yahoo.com

BTW, at 948 feet long (289 meters), the M/Y Njord is longer than the RMS Titanic, which was 882 feet (269 meters) long.

From what I saw online in a quick search, looks like she will indeed be an ocean-going vessel.

Here’s why the smaller force is winning:

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, we have thrown weapons at leadership we have wanted to win, but when they don’t want to, you can’t make them win. OTOH, when a side wants to win, you can give them the chance.

Case in point: Afghanistan. We spent 20 years and hundreds of billions of dollars arming and training the army, and it surrendered to the Taliban before we even completed the withdrawal.

Problem number one: Russia as currently constituted doesn’t do coalitions. It is a Great Power, and therefore has China and the US as peers, and the rest of the world as vassals to be fought over as required. Russia is also going to have loser stink all over it, and China will use the opportunity to shake it down for whatever it can get without totally destabilizing its neighborhood, hopefully. So, loser’s corner there too.

A lot of the global south gets a shitload of Russian propaganda dumped on them 24/7, helped along by our buddies at Meta. A lot of people there get a little less enamored of Russia after meeting their mercenaries and paid shills in the flesh.

The men’s marathon world record has been smashed - with Kenyan’s Eliud Kipchoge winning the Berlin Marathon in 2:01:09. This means he is running EVERY mile in fewer than 5 minutes (more like 4:35-4:50).

At some point, the men’s mark in an official event will tumble below 2 hours. For perspective, the first recognized marathon mark of 2:55:18 was established in 1908. The last eight record times have come at the Berlin Marathon - noted for its flat terrain and generally favorable weather.

The Ocean Cleanup Conceptualizes Its Third Massive Apparatus to Remove Trash from the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’
thisiscolossal.com

Back in 2018, The Ocean Cleanup engineered a slow-moving apparatus called System 001 designed to wade through the patch to retrieve garbage with a massive net. The nonprofit, which wants to remove 90 percent of floating plastic by 2040, is now conceptualizing its third iteration of the machine that will be the largest and most efficient model to date. “When it comes to cleaning the oceans, size matters,” a statement about the new technology says. “Bigger systems mean fewer support vessels, which are the main cost driver (and the main carbon emitter) in our operations. In short, bigger systems mean a lower cost per kilogram.” System 002 removed more than 100,000 kilograms of plastic as of July 2022.

So much applause to these folks!

Then they like to cite the fact that he did not accept a Presidential salary as proof that he put Public Office before Business Interests.

And ignore the fact that he generally used his office to promote those very same Business Interests: likely on a more profitable basis than simply accepting the salary money. (Which, he “donated” to his own “charities” IIRC - but that may be an incorrect recollection: it’s Donald Trump, though: almost any accusation/suggestion of corruption/double-dealing is credible)

The one who ran for VP alongside Dewey against Truman. I recently found an old Dewey/Warren campaign button buried in a box full of old family memorabilia.

I seem to recall a scene from Fractured Fairy Tales cartoon with a with brewing up a potion consisting of “eye of newt, ear of gnat, an old Dewey button and a french-fried bat”.

re: #171 No Malarkey!

Fingers crossed, we’ll see Kansas referendum like turnout across the country in November. If Republicans think women are going to “get over it” about being turned into Handmaids, I believe they will find out differently. It’s even possible that many Republican women will use their secret ballot to defend their rights.

Remember, the Kansas amendment allowing abortion prohibition didn’t fail because more populous cities outvoted the rural areas — it failed everywhere in the state.

From Warren’s Wiki:

Explaining Warren’s qualifications for the Court, Eisenhower wrote to his brother, “Warren has had seventeen years of practice in public law, during which his record was one of remarkable accomplishment and success…. He has been very definitely a liberal-conservative; he represents the kind of political, economic, and social thinking that I believe we need on the Supreme Court.”[94] Warren received a recess appointment in October 1953, and the Senate confirmed Warren’s appointment by acclamation in March 1954

No table-pounding necessary.

Many employees from at least five airlines, including flag carrier Aeroflot, and 10 airports in Russia have been given their military conscription notices after President Putin ordered a partial mobilization of Russia’s military reserves.

Airline and aviation staff reportedly received their notices just a day after the mobilization order was announced. In Russia, the majority of pilots serving under commercial airlines are also reserve officers trained in military flight schools or privates who have completed military service.

The Federal Trade Union of Air Traffic Controllers also revealed that many air traffic controllers have received their notices. The organization has written personally to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin for exemption status.

Simon Shama’s The Story of the Jews, Rick Steves’ The Story of Fascism in Europe, The Rise of the Nazis, My Grandparents War—Helena Bonham-Carter, Orchestra of Exiles, Atlantic Crossing and now The US and the Holocaust. This is a partial list of the shows I have seen regarding my fellow Jews. I also have personal information from my late parents who were born in the US and who lived through these years. My late dad who was typing up the war plans (Operation Overlord) hinted at many other stories which to this day are still classified (he never told me what they were). My late mom mentioned the stuff she lived through as well as the history she and her classmates read from the newspapers. And now we have to fight it all over again because of DT and his gang of followers.

Members of the Cherokee Nation tribe are leading a push to hold government officials accountable for their promises made more than 185 years ago.

“In 1835, the government of the United States and the Cherokee Nation signed the Treaty of New Echota, which forced our ancestors to give up their homelands and move west on the Trail of Tears,” Chuck Hoskin, Jr., principal chief of Cherokee Nation, said in a moving video posted on YouTube. “Today, people remember that dark chapter in our nation’s history where one quarter of the Cherokee Nation population perished. But they may not know that the same treaty promise that was used to remove the Cherokee Nation also guaranteed the tribe a right to send a delegate to Congress.”

An adendum at the bottom of dailykos.com from Mark Summers:

Meanwhile at the far end of the line, The New York Times has some very good, and very rough, reporting on what’s happening down in Kherson. In short—it’s not going well. Not in the sense that Ukraine is losing, but in the sense of what kos, among others, has warned about all along: In this flat, open territory where Russia has created multiple lines of trenches and fortifications, any advance is made at terrible cost. Ukraine is seeing losses in Kherson that are hard to contemplate, and the price they’ve paid for some of the territorial gains in that area may just be a down payment on what it will take to actually free Kherson. It’s a whole different war down there.

I’m not sure where he would stand if he were still in office but his antipathy toward Trump stems from Trump’s admiration of Putin. Would Walsh have abandoned his strong anti-Putin philosophy in support of Trump’s allegiance to the autocrat? Maybe.. He was an avid Trump acolyte before the 2016 election — but switched in December of that year. He might have been in favor of some variety of “Christian” nationalism but I’m not sure that would hold if it also meant aligning with Putin.

The case on Isle Royale in Lake Superior is that the wolves getting there broke a grow-and-starve cycle of the moose population there. Is the wolves are taking out weakened or old moose the others are getting more food and the overall herd health and numbers is better and in an equilibrium with the browse supply.

re: #122 No Malarkey!

Case in point: Afghanistan. We spent 20 years and hundreds of billions of dollars arming and training the army, and it surrendered to the Taliban before we even completed the withdrawal.

Think of every part WW2 war film.

Do we ever are the enemy portrayed as people?

Or the civilians caught up in the conflict, even the ones on our side?

Why were the Nazis portrayed more sympathetically than the NVA?

The ARVN were often not even mentioned! And if mentioned, only to be ridiculed.

If you don’t see Afghanis as people why do you think they’re going to feel that they’re on your side.

Whatever the outcome of this war, it will be the first stage of Russia turning away from the West and establishing a new non(anti) Western coalition. Russia would rather be a larg(er) frog in that pond than just sitting in the loser’s corner at the Western political/economic party

So, how do you think Mali is feeling, having kicked out the French and given the anti-jihadist task to Wagner, only to see the French Caesar artillery systems go to the Ukraine to bombard the Wagner mercenaries who were withdrawn from Timbuktu?
