Carla Morrison: An Exquisite Tiny Desk Concert

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with an El Tiny takeover, featuring Jessie Reyez, Susana Baca and more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.

Felix Contreras | October 7, 2022
The magic of Carla Morrison’s music is in the intimacy of her lyrics and her voice. I’ve seen the Mexican singer-songwriter woo small audiences and large crowds with an elegance that’s only grown since her first releases. That power to mesmerize is on full display during her time behind the desk with four songs that draw on the things that have earned Morrison stans all over Latin America.

After the opening piano strains of “Contigo,” we’re treated to a display of how Morrison’s lyrics can sometimes move the singer herself as she confesses to shedding a few tears during the chorus.

There is an underlying sense of purpose and release in this music as she explains why she took a break from her music career and how that influences the passion behind her latest album, El Renacimiento.

In fact, even as she introduces “Encontrarme” as an ode to self discovery and recovery, Morrison displays where the emotion in her lyrics come from as she tears up explaining the origin of the song.

“I’m so emotional,” she says through tears, “because it’s been a long time since I’ve been touring and I took a really long time to come back to myself and to be able to sing again. Just to be here means a lot to me because I do watch NPR Tiny Desk at home!”

As if it couldn’t get any more emotional, Morrison introduces “Te Regalo” by introducing the object of her melodic affections, her husband and co-producer, Alejandro Jiménez.

I’m not saying you should have a box of tissues nearby while you watch Carla Morrison’s performance, but it came in handy for me.

OK, so ordered a new door gasket for the freezer section of my combination fridge/freezer. I should have it by Tuesday.

Looking into it, it’s one hell of a lot cheaper replacing the door gasket than buying a new fridge/freezer. And replacing the gasket isn’t too difficult, at least not on my Commie-era appliance. Frankly, I’m surprised there’s still parts available for it, but $34 is still less expensive than buying a used appliance. And of course, a whole lot less than buying a new one (unaffordable for me).

So Russia ran a ‘test train’ over the bridge, then video appears to show the bridge still blocked by burnt out oil cars which look to be not level on the tracks, meaning the rails they’re on may have warped or the axles are no longer functional. They did disconnect the rest of the train and pull it off in each direction.

The explosion occurred shortly before dawn, the video of the apparent test train appeared to occur well after sunset. So, showing a daylight view of train cars still on the bridge really doesn’t contradict government statements. Chronologically all are possible

The Kerch bridge is double tracked with almost enough separation between them for a third track. One could be severely damaged by the fire and blocked by the burnt out cars while leaving the other operational. It would depend on where the leaking kerosene flowed or pooled as to what damage occurred. There are undoubtedly some switches between the tracks to limit how much of the bridge is now limited to single track operation.

76
Dr Lizardo  Oct 8, 2022 • 1:02:48pm

Another perspective on the Kerch Bridge incident:

Some demolition experts who analyzed footage of the blast questioned the Russian version and said that the explosion must have come from under the bridge, caused either by an explosives-laden boat, manned or unmanned, or by shaped charges placed by divers.

Tony Spamer, a former British Army expert on bridge demolitions, said a truck bomb would have created a hole in the middle of bridge but wouldn’t have been sufficient to cut the reinforcing bar and cause the structure to collapse. “You’ve got to attack the whole width of the bridge. Looking at it, it looks like it was attacked from underneath. It’s a monster job,” he said.

On a second look, I scanned along the whole bridge and causeway, and for some distance beyond on either side without finding ANY interconnect switches between the two tracks. I’ll bet they’ll regret not having them now, as that will slow two-way traffic significantly.

This is a consistent theme across Microsoft’s certifications. I took one of their certifications about 6 years ago, and the exam questions had little to do with the material presented in the training. I was able to get through the exams with some extrapolation and careful thought, but it was a lot more annoying than I would’ve liked.
