Eliane Elias and her team arrived the day before this Tiny Desk to check out the space and audition the piano. We all worked to make sure that every detail, including the sound and cameras, were just right. And it turned out great. The meticulousness and care that went into this concert is evident in the brilliance of the performance.

Elias and her band brought a little bit of Brazil with this commanding performance of the best of the Brazilian jazz genre. Watch how the piano keys sit comfortably under Elias’ hands, and how the dynamic syncopation in her percussive left hand complements the beautiful melodic lines of her right, both blending perfectly with the musicianship of her talented band. This superb combination of Afro-Latin rhythms, like samba and bossa nova, with straight-ahead styles make for really infectious music.

Eliane Elias was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up in a musical household. By the time she was 10 she was already a huge jazz fan. Today, she has her own fandom and a 31-album catalog that includes her latest release, Quietude, and Mirror Mirror, a project with Chick Corea and Chucho Valdés that won both a Grammy award and a Latin Grammy for best Latin jazz album earlier this year.

Herschel Walker (R) felt as though he should have received 100% of the vote in Johnson county — where he grew up — and was “absolutely shocked” by the result, the Daily Beast reports.

Said Walker: “I’m gonna call the sheriff and have him find out who didn’t vote for me.”

So walker won Johnson county, 71-29%. The total number of votes cast was 3,386. Not exactly consequential.
(Real)

The 29% who didn’t vote for him are his kids.

Union Rep: “573 to 1”
Reporter: “573 to 1??”
Union Rep: “Yeah, we’re out looking for the guy right now…..”

Next county over from me.

I was going to mention that one of our esteemed lizards lives next door to Spotsylvania County. Both counties have undergone tremendous growth and change in the past 40 years. From sleepy rural Southern villages to wide swaths of suburban areas with commuters heading to DC and Richmond on a daily basis.

Attention Palmetto State folks, looks like Murdaugh is back in the news -

Defense attorney Jim Griffin said it is ridiculous to claim that a person seeking to distract from financial crimes would then put themself at the center of a murder investigation.

Murdaugh’s attorney is stupid. People do very dumb things when they’re under pressure, such as how back in the day (1985), a guy named Mark Hofmann was about to be in a world of hurt because he hadn’t found the time to forge a document he promised to provide to the Mormon church. He killed two people (Steven Christensen and Kathy Sheets) with homemade bombs and then blew himself up (still not clear if intentional).

Hofmann is still with us, 37 years later. en.wikipedia.org

tl;dnr -

1. GOP Congressman Mast accused Democratic Congresswoman Lee of throwing American Flags in the trash, lack of patriotism, etc and a posted a picture of some American flags in a trash-like container.

2. Congresswoman Lee pointed out in response, that the Architect of the Capitol handles all moves, that she had no involvement in any of this, and that Mast knows all this, so is lying. (I suspect that official rules of the House of Representatives prohibited use of the word ‘lying’.)

3. The Capitol of the Architect sends a letter agreeing with Congresswoman Lee.

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (née Byron; 10 December 1815 - 27 November 1852) was an English mathematician and writer, chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage’s proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She was the first to recognise that the machine had applications beyond pure calculation, and to have published the first algorithm intended to be carried out by such a machine. As a result, she is often regarded as the first computer programmer.

Ada Byron was the only legitimate child of poet Lord Byron and Lady Byron.

How the New York Times helped Republicans win the House

t wasn’t just the Times’ crime coverage that was deeply skewed to favor Republicans. Its obsessively inflation-focused coverage of the economy (again, certainly not alone) was similarly perverse, and also highly consequential.

“Why did we spend the past year or so reading daily stories about record high inflation but only occasional mention of record low unemployment?” Watts asked. “Both stories were true, but only one got consistent traction.” These two “Democrats in charge, situation out of control” narratives may have been custom-built in the Fox News ecosystem, but the Times eagerly gobbled them up and amplified them across the political spectrum, crowding out contrasting narratives in the process.

This is two snapshots of our radar:

We are where it says 58F. We are in a thunderstorm at the moment. As you can tell, the storm is mostly moving in the direction of its shape, though there is a slight eastward drift. Because our ground hasn’t dried out from the Thanksgiving rains, the water is running off into the streets and creeks. We are under a flood warning until Monday.

I think I might have seen a Japanese flag twice when I was in Japan last month, and one of those times was at Meiji Jingu, the Shinto shrine where the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife are enshrined. It’s just not something done in Japan. Unlike here, where (for example) a few homes have permanent front yard flag poles and LOTS of people pull out flags for various occasions.

They fly the Royal Standard at the sportsground I work at sometimes since the Princess Royal, Anne is the Royal patron of Scottish Rugby and sometimes comes to international matches to watch (and cheer on) the Scotland team.

Yeah, cool, Trumpers are obviously worshipping the golden (calf?)

But I was talking about general American flag mania.

That shit is weird.

Most of us have a flag. We tend to feel good when we see it. But strange rules about how it should be disposed of? That’s a bit off.

The rules are set forth in the US Flag Code, which most of those braniacs in that thread are getting wrong.

The specific rule is: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Note rule doesn’t state specifically how the flag should be disposed, only preferred. “Dignified way” doesn’t mean putting it through a wood chipper or piling a bunch of flags in the street and setting them on fire or throwing it in the trash. (The trash part is where Rep. Mast is complaining, even though that is not in the US Flag Code.)

Organisations such as the VFW or the Girl Scouts will also accept US Flags for disposal.

Flying a giant-ass flag off the back of your truck getting filthy and shredded is not dignified either.

Other countries have disposal rules as well, such as Canada.
canada.ca

The disposal of a flag may be handled in the following manner:

Flags made of natural fibres (wool, cotton, linen) should be burned in a dignified manner, privately, without ceremony or public attention being drawn to the destruction of the material.
Flags made of synthetic material (nylon or polyester) should not be burned due to environmental damage and potential fire hazard. They should be respectfully torn into strips, with each element of the flag reduced to a single colour, so that the remaining pieces do not resemble a flag. The individual pieces should then be placed in a bag for disposal - the shreds of fabric should not be reused or fashioned into anything.

The United Kingdom was more complicated and has changed over the years, but is currently:

When a flag becomes tattered or faded and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, for example by burning, tearing or cutting into strips that no longer resemble the original flag

Flying Flags in the United Kingdom (PDF, thirty-two pages, goes to the UK Flags and Heraldry Committee)

Most nations have flag codes, but most citizens don’t know them.

Something to look forward to:

Alaska’s flu season is already the worst in years, and it’s far from over

More influenza has been detected in Alaska so far this season than in any of the previous five years, according to a weekly flu snapshot report put out by the Alaska Department of Health.

That report shows a steep upward curve, illustrating an unusually bad cold and flu season that began earlier than usual and has sickened both children and adults, putting intense pressure on the state’s health care system.

My wife and I have had all our Covid and flu shots but are still hanging out at home as much as possible. And we do wear masks when we do go out.

Totally not in any condition to walk 2 & a half blocks & then up flight of stairs to the venue hosting the Sabbath party for the wedding couple. So we spent Shabbat in the apartment, eating takeout food. Some of our kids & grandkids came to visit.

I am really enjoying this visit, being the Matriarch of a Dynasty & have my kids waiting on me. Like Queen Victoria, but I’m not a control freak like she was.

I understand. Yes, war is death and destruction. Not things to be happy about. Although, if they end and result in an improvement for survivors, it seems to me that there is reasonable cause to celebrate war’s end.

While I have strong views regarding what sort of results would be the best for myself, my family and my nation, I post for other reasons. My goal is to try and understand what is happening and why.

In this case, it appears that the Russian command made another severe miscalculation. One that caught it and it’s soldiers by surprise. This miscalculation may cause the Russians to react in ways that could affect the course of the war.

For example, the Russians may conclude that the Crimean peninsula is now within range of Ukrainian artillery.

One possibility is that this may cause them to withdraw their civilians, the administrative assets and to consider doing the same with their military.

Or they might simply choose to ignore things completely and get more people killed and injured. It will not be the first time in this war that they have done so.

Another idiotic opinion piece from THE HILL. My eyes are going to roll out of my head by 2024.

They so desperately want to be victims.

It’s been a while, but I don’t particularly remember anyone denigrating Elizabeth Dole. Nikki Haley earned her derision, as did the writer of the Laptop from Hell story, and Sarah Palin. Margaret Thatcher was not even an American, but sure, her policies stunk.

Within the five major “megaphones” of our nation — the media, academia, entertainment, science and medicine — the only women deserving credit and acclaim are those from the left who create, instill and parrot the liberal policies and narratives of the moment.

Concrete statue…gonna put it out by the bird bath in the front yard?

By comparison, I’m REALLY starting to appreciate the Virgin Mary and St. Francis statues I see around town. I might lose it if I see a “blackened copper clad concrete statue” of TFG.

The nearest Virgin Mary statute I’m aware of around here (aside from Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches) is in Pine Bluffs, Wyo.

It is part of the Our Lady of Peace Shrine, just inside Wyoming from the Nebraska line. The statue is thirty feet tall, and the grounds include a walk-around Stations of the Cross.

If the Russians have the discipline to do this, the data below is that they are running out of missiles. If the Russians are not using up their oldest missiles first, the data below doesn’t tell us much.

Where the word soccer came from according to Duolingo:

The English called it “soccer”

The word “soccer” was coined by—gasp—the English.

This devastating news is actual linguistic fact! The people that affectionately call their Prince William “Wills” and £5 and £10 notes “fivers” and “tenners” are responsible for shortening “Association Football” to just “Assoc.”—which, when written, looks like it might be pronounced “Assock.” (This “Association Football” name is the same as the French Football Association in FIFA!) In late 1800s England, at Oxford, there was also a fad of adding -er to some words. And thus, “soccer” was born.

re: #109 John Hughes

Yeah, cool, Trumpers are obviously worshipping the golden (calf?)

But I was talking about general American flag mania.

That shit is weird.

Most of us have a flag. We tend to feel good when we see it. But strange rules about how it should be disposed of? That’s a bit off.

To me, looking at it from the inside,Trump worship and the overweening flag cult are closely related. Both are the result of 60 years of conservative whining, propaganda, and agitation. The US Flag Code has existed since the 19th century but it really only became an issue during the Reagan years. As many analysts have pointed out, Trump is not an aberation but the natural outcome of Republican trends since the departure of Eisenhower.
I think this ultimately has to do with conservative insecurity and doubt about their loyalty and their acceptance of American (ie US) principles and ideals. They’re ok with the daily reality but terrified that this might change and the ideals would be put into effect.
This insecurity, in turn, is a product of the Civil War era when there was no doubt that the South was disloyal. Not all conservatives are neo-Confederates by any means, but over time conservatism has come to be identified closely with the Confederacy. Neo-Confederates were by far the largest, loudest, and best organized group of true reactionaries in the country. Hence, you cannot be a conservative without at least a nod to the Confederacy and the Lost Cause. Nixon demonstrated this quite dramatically with the success of the “Southern Strategy.”
If, at heart, you are a slavery supporting rebel white supremacist Christian nationalist who wants to replace the United States with a network of feudal theocracies, you need a way to disguise your true intentions until they are ready to be implemented. Waving, and finally worshipping, the flag is a cheap and painless way to do this. How dare we question their loyalty when they have 40 flags on their porch and a dozen more on their pickup?

Ok, but, as you hinted, in most countries this is not an obsession.

I know of nowhere, appart from the US where you could use this as a political attack. Because it’s deeply weird.

Protestors in other countries will sometimes do things like burn their own country’s flag, but I’m not aware of people using “you’re insufficiently patriotic” as a political attack elsewhere.

It’s selective here though. Wingnuts against others, not the other way round.

Certainly if a few, or maybe even a few dozen were caught in this, it would be more convincing that the decision to stay in one place was a local one, rather than an official by the channels decision.

However, placing hundreds of soldiers in a specific place; Which affects what they are supposed to be doing; Is generally a higher level decision. In this case most likely taken by the Army, Army Group, or Central HQ in Moscow.

He was one of the few recent US Presidents who didn’t start a war far from America’s shores and didn’t spend a few hundred billion bucks to blow up a lot of grass huts. President Obama who famously did win a Peace Prize worked hard to destabilise Libya and by extension large parts of North Africa which are still combat zones to this day.

Yeah right. It wasn’t a bloody dictatorship (which even Russia agreed had to go) predictably causing a civil war, crumbling and causing chaos, because dictatorships inherently contain a destabilizing element. It was Obama.

“We come in peace, shoot to kill!”

Qaddafi was a prick, definitely but getting rid of him and having few plans to replace him other than installing the usual “democratically elected” Western puppet was always going to be a disaster for Libya and the surrounding nations. See, for example, Afghanistan which President Obama decided could be fixed by “surging” more NATO troops into the country. I will admit Afghanistan is a special case even among shitty backward hellholes though.

This has zero to do with Obama and your false claim about him though. Obama did not work “hard to destabilise Libya”. Never happened. He, just like the rest of the world, represented by the UN Security Council, was reacting to a Libya destabilized by Kaddafi.

Lockerbie bombing suspect is now in U.S. custody, authorities say (NBC News, December 11, 2022, a few minutes ago)

“The United States has taken custody of alleged Pan Am flight 103 bombmaker Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi,” a Department of Justice spokesperson told NBC News.

A Libyan man suspected of making the bomb that blew up a passenger plane over the small Scottish town of Lockerbie in 1988, is in American custody, authorities in the U.S. and Scotland said Sunday.

“The United States has taken custody of alleged Pan Am flight 103 bombmaker Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi,” a Department of Justice spokesperson told NBC News. “He is expected to make his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.”

In a separate statement Scotland’s Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said that the victims’ families had been told that he was in American custody.

One of the greatest lies the Republican Party has foisted off on the American people is that media outlets like the New York Times or The Economist are “liberal.”

After The Economist sponsored a so-called free speech forum headlining Steve Bannon in New York, I wrote to immediately cancel my subscription, asking why they were promoting fascists. I got a personal (mail) letter from the senior editor quite literally begging me to stay.

The fear of confession? High Catholic collective narcissism and low secure identification with Catholics predict increased pedophilia myth acceptance

Abstract:

Over the past 30 years, the Catholic Church has been rocked by a series of child sexual abuse scandals worldwide. Some of the religious officials suggested that the children are partly to blame for being sexually abused by priests. We assumed that such convictions (i.e., pedophilia myth acceptance) should be associated with a defensive commitment to one’s religious group, captured by religious collective narcissism. In two studies conducted among Polish participants (Study 1, longitudinal, n = 719; Study 2, cross-sectional, n = 357), we found that pedophilia myth acceptance was positively predicted by Catholic narcissism but negatively by secure identification with Catholics. We additionally demonstrated that the effect of Catholic narcissism on pedophilia myth acceptance was mediated by a siege mentality with respect to the religious in-group. We discuss the role of different types of group commitment in predicting in-group criticism and prejudice against underaged victims of sexual abuse.

Once people got the hang of story telling and threading, 280 isn’t really much of a limit anymore

Think of it more like a kindle reader set to really big type so 280 characters fit on a page

The secrets shared by Afghan women (BBC, seventeen hours ago)

“My pen is the wing of a bird; it will tell you those thoughts we are not allowed to think, those dreams we are not allowed to dream.”

At times, voices of Afghan women rise from the streets of Kabul and other cities in small, loud, protests. Often, they ring out in speeches by women now far away, outside Afghanistan. But mostly, their thoughts are only expressed quietly, in safe places. Or they fester in their heads as they try to reconcile their lives with the increasingly rigid rules of the Taliban government. They restrict what women wear, where they work, what they can do, or not, with their lives.

In the months before the Taliban returned, in August 2021, 18 Afghan women writers wrote fictional stories, drawn from real lives, and published early this year in the book, My Pen is the Wing of a Bird. Many Afghan women felt let down and left alone by the international community. But these writers used their pens and phones to comfort each other and to reflect on issues now faced by millions of women and girls. Here, two writers in Kabul, with pen names Paranda and Sadaf, shared their thoughts written in secret.

I’m off to bed. Catch y’all later.

Why I go to my pal Tony’s Palermo instead of Olive Garden…

A manager at an Olive Garden in Kansas has been fired after allegedly sending out a letter to employees detailing an aggressive new sick-leave policy.

The strongly-worded message sent to the employees at the Overland Park Olive Garden appeared to show sweeping changes to the restaurant’s sick leave policy.

Part of the letter obtained by a local station reads:

“We are no longer tolerating ANY excuse for calling off. If you’re sick, you need to come prove it to us. If your dog died, you need to bring him in and prove it to us. If it’s a ‘family emergency’ and you can’t say, too bad. Go work somewhere else.”

The letter goes on to say that any employee that calls in sick more than once within the next 30 days will be terminated.

At the end of the letter, the manager said that they hoped all employees would continue to work there while thanking the employees who come in on time, saying, “I wish there were more like you.”

In a statement to NBC 5, Darden Restaurants, the parent company of Olive Garden, confirmed the chain parted ways with the manager:

I’m guessing this manager didn’t have a good enough contingency plan for unexpected absences. If it happens a lot you’d better have a plan, you can’t stop the absences by fiat (except the railroad industry apparently).

It will probably take a while: ISTM he’s more likely to just let the antisemites/Nazis rail away, and respond only with an occasional tsk-tsk, and his patented “free speech” clichés: and probably, once in a while, ostentatiously banning one or another of the worst creeps so that he can burnish his “moderation” credentials. This is why the Burger King near me has a notice up on the drive-thru sign that says “Lettuce Unavailable.” It’s too expensive.

LA’s ‘orgasmic’ $18 Japanese milk bread sells out in seconds every day

theguardian.com

Two things:

1) When I was in Japan, I read that bakeries which had specialized in “white breads” such as this milk bread were experiencing financial issues because the fad had burned itself out. This is not to say that bread itself is declining in popularity, but white bread.

2) This damn bread is more expensive than buying a full loaf of a wheat bread mixed with Sonoma raisins and California nuts from Andersen’s bakery in Shinagawa Station. I loved that d*mn*d bread. I have even seriously considered learning how to make bread just so I could make raisin nut bread.

Tin Can Cabin - A Shipping Container Home in Wisconsin

This cosy container cabin was constructed by one ambitious man inspired by the recent boom in self-builders taking on the construction of their own homes. The cabin is located in northern Wisconsin and has been dubbed by the owner-builder, the Tin Can Cabin.

The Tin Can Cabin is composed of three shipping containers that have been repurposed to create his own small home. Steve, the owner and builder behind this unique retreat, took on the whole operation with no professional experience in the building industry.

The cabin comes in at 480 square feet (46 square meters). Steve was able to build and furnish his home for just under $36,000 - pretty incredible. The project took almost four years to complete, and prior to starting he decided to consult an engineer in order to avoid any major pitfalls in the construction process.

If I’m not mistaken, Turkey made a refugee camp for about 1,000 people out of shipping containers. It was one family (mostly Syrians, IIRC) per container.

Link

Turkey has prepared two-story container homes for refugees at a camp in southeastern province of Kilis in anticipation of a fresh influx of people fleeing from a nearby Syrian town, a provincial deputy governor has said.

The Kilis Öncüpınar refugee camp, established in 2012, already hosts more than 13,000 people.

“We have 1,000 two-story container houses ready right now and 248 more such houses will be prepared within two weeks,” Mustafa Ünver Büke, Kilis deputy governor and refugee camp director, told Anadolu Agency in an interview on Feb. 17.

“The two-story container refugee camp is the first of its kind in the world,” Büke said, adding that the container homes had been designed by Turkish engineers.

He said the new camp area had the capacity to host 10,000 “guests,” which is how the government classifies Syrians in the country, rather than refugees.

the policy / ‘rules’ for the board of directors and the owners of any company, large and small are, and can be different from those for the employees. They work ‘on’ the company, not in it.

but, and this is a big but:

if a director or owner chooses to work in the company at a hireable job, then they are an employee. they must adhere to the same rules and behavior as an outsider in that position and as any other employee. they get no, as in zero special treatment, perks or pay because they are also an owner or director.

they also get paid the market rate the company would otherwise pay an outsider to do that job -whether vp finance, janitor, sales rep, coder, or whatever.

(don’t get me started on family members)

Gender Inequities in Household Labor Predict Lower Sexual Desire in Women Partnered with Men (Archives of Sexual Behavior, via Springer, September 16, 2022)

Full study at the link

Abstract:

Low sexual desire in women is usually studied as a problem, one that is located within women. However, other possibilities exist, including known gender inequities related to heteronormative gender roles. In this study, we provide the first test of the theory that heteronormativity is related to low sexual desire in women partnered with men, focusing specifically on inequities in the division of household labor. In two studies with women who were partnered with men and had children (Study 1, N = 677; Study 2, N = 396), performing a large proportion of household labor was associated with significantly lower sexual desire for a partner. Together, the results suggest that this association was mediated by both perceiving the partner as a dependent and perceiving the division of labor as unfair. These results support the heteronormativity theory of low sexual desire in women partnered with men, and show that gender inequities are important, though understudied, contributors to low desire in women partnered with men.

I know you have Illinois roots, too. Our snow season in downstate east central Illinois usually adhered to the winter months. Occasionally we’d get a pre-Christmas snow or two, and I remember bone-cold midnight services at our Church, but the heavy stuff came January through March, with an occasional ice storm in April.

I remember one time in Joliet area it snowed for ARRL Field Day in the early 80s, in the pre-dawn hours of a Sunday morning in late June.

Apparently a one-off since it never happened again, or even came close.

re: #497 Backwoods_Sleuth

I saw that a few days ago. There is a better chance for snow in January and February when the ground is colder. In order to have a heavy snow in Philly at least three things must happen at the same time: the ocean temperature must be 40 degrees or colder, the storm has to come up the coast and the ground must be freezing or below. There are other factors that play a part but the three that I just mentioned must be there.

The pool in the ’70s would open after Memorial day, but it was never warm enough to swim until mid-June.

Like most of Irving Berlin’s songs, there is an intro verse to White Christmas. It is not often performed, so you may or may not know it, but I think it adds a lot to the song…

The sun is shining, the grass is green,
The orange and palm trees sway.
There’s never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, LA.
But it’s December the 24th,
And I am longing to be up north…

A quick search popped up the version below as the first link, even though the video has only 76 views. How that work? I don’t know. Anyway, the singers are very good.

She can do more damage than you can anticipate, especially if McCarthy continues to kowtow to her. McCarthy cannot afford to lose any support in his pursuit of his life ambition of being Speaker of the House.

My sister and I remain terrified of what can occur if a MAGAt succeeds in assassinating Biden and Harris. I have no doubt that she has that realization on her mind.

The real problem is that Obama did not merit the Nobel Peace Prize; the committee was just so relieved that the Bush team was gone from office that they celebrated by awarding him a medal he did not deserve. I supported Obama, voted for him (not in the primary; my vote went to Hillary) and thought he was an excellent president. But the only American president in my lifetime who deserved that prize was one who did not receive it: Jimmy Carter.

It was SNOWING on the I-80 in New Jersey. Then all through PA it was alternately raining and misting. It’s actually quite beautiful to see the mist clinging to the mountainside, but if the mist crosses the road it can be dangerous to drive through.

I had a wonderful Zojirushi 1 pound bread maker for 20 years. Had to give it away when I was diagnosed with Type 2 because the Dr said I had to give up white bread.

The basic recipe called for self-rising flour, water, a half teaspoon of salt, yeast and lots of powdered milk. The bread always came out silky smooth. smeared butter on a thick slice and just a “dab” of apple butter…heavenly delight…

Nick Foles and Doug Peterson and the Iggles beating the Brady led Patriots in the Super Bowl was one of the best things in sports I ever witnessed.
Nick Foles, who became the starting QB after golden boy Carson Wentz was injured, was the right man at the right time in the right place.
Philly Philly Big Dick Nick rushed for a TD.
Threw for a TD.
And caught a pass for a TD.
In the Super Bowl.
Carson Wentz had one character test to pass, and he failed.
He got insulted the Iggles drafted Jalen Hurts.
Iggles weren’t even sure he was going to be THE QB for them.
I think he passed the test.
12-1 and rolling.
Could be the start of something special.
