Panthers play their best game of the season and win on the road for the first time since last November. Still in the division title hunt! And, yes, the Brady humiliation is completed in San Fran! It was a good day.

And the Vikings lost to the freakin’ Detroit Lions. Ya love to see it.

Been a wild sports week - from Croatia beating Brazil to Morocco beating Portugal to the Kane shank against France to the Texans beating choking against the Cowboys. Oh, well, nothing is perfect.

Trump — you mean the prisoner you ignored during the period of his incarceration while you were President? The one arrested when you were President and you did nothing to help him out? That prisoner? I wonder who is writing his “truths”. Surely he’s not posting himself?

As to the Twitter Trump — it may have been a lizard who recently suggested that Elon’s hostility toward Democrats arises because we don’t shower him with the adulation that he receives from MAGAts. It seems as though this may be source of the narcissist’s issues: Democrats tend not to be as supportive (in general) of the wealthy. We* want to provide benefits to the poor and working class and middle classes— and raise taxes on those who can afford it. Many D legislators fail on this front but our party created Social Security and Medicare and the CRA and VRA and pushes for equality, rather than worshiping at the feet of the billionaire class. He believes that we all owe him special deference; that he is superior and all who won’t acknowledge his genius must be destroyed. It is people like him who led to the French revolution.

*”We” especially excludes Sinema and Manchin.

When my BIL/SIL updated their fireplace the guy who did it fucked up and a fire started in the wall behind the brick. They caught it before the entire house burned down. Lots of smoke damage but no actual damage.

Paranoia is a good thing.

I was up at Monarch Ski Area this weekend hawking our skiing wares. Several Colorado-based ski and snowboard companies (including the one I work for) offered free demos (try our stuff on snow!) yesterday and today. Almost a half dozen folks came back and asked “How do I buy this stuff?”

You can briefly see me at the beginning of this short vid getting ready to ski down a steep run to be videoed and photographed (hopefully footage coming soon). You can also hear me whistle loudly to signal our photographer/videographer.

My living room did not look like that! The shag carpet was green.

My family moved into a new house in 1974 with wood paneled walls and green shag carpet. My parents got a dark green upholstered set of what I now call 1970s middle class aspirational furniture and parked it in the living room, where we kids were not supposed to go. The couches and chairs have since gone on to be with their Louis XIV forebears, but an endtable and coffee table are still in my possession nearly a half-century later. Heavy as hell and virtually indestructible.

However in Post.News searching for “Green_Footballs”, “Charles Johnson”, and “Green’ did not find you. However, searching for “Footballs” brought joy to Mudville.
And yes, you were listed as Green_Footballs and Charles Johnson.

Yep. The Russians acquiring LiveJournal is why I abandoned it years ago. It was so long ago that I no longer remember the password to my account and I no longer have the e-mail address with which I signed up for it.

“No. That’s a wall.”
“It could be disguised.”

I can understand. I’ve always tended to only really “be” on one at a time so while I may read, say, twitter or look at Instagram, the only one I use right now is Mastodon. It’s an annoying UI to put it nicely but I can post my pictures and even get one or two favorites for them.

The coming year certainly holds the promise of changes at Tesla.

Elon forced to sell off his shares is one. (Although he is using a bunch of other people’s money in purchasing Twitter.)

Pushing Elon out of Tesla management is another.

The shredding of the Tesla market is a third. It will be interesting to see if the rwnj’s migrate onto Teslas and away from their coal-rolling pickups. As progressives migrate to competitor’s electronic vehicles. And I suspect that various national authorities are going to exhibit less tolerance in ignoring Tesla’s ongoing accidents and failures.

No matter how much they love Saint Elon, it is still an article of faith in the right-wing religion that Global Warming Is Not A Thing (tm), and that their patriotic duty is to buy the biggest, heaviest, most gas-guzzling vehicle imaginable (no matter how impractical it is for their situation) in order to pwn as many libs as possible.

Yeah, I know. It’s just so frustrating to me. The old adage of Christianity is supposed to be, “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” American Christians don’t know how to do that; they can’t separate the sin from the sinner, so they’re all on board with hating anyone they regard as “sinners” because they think that’s what White American Jesus has commanded them to do. It’s so fucking stupid, but it’s everywhere, and my puny little voice doesn’t seem to matter against the onslaught of bulkshit from the pulpit pimps at the top.

I’ve had to deal with religious bigotry all of my life whether it was in school, college, at work, or when I tried to socialize with Christians who made it clear they considered me a heathen going to hell. Doesn’t matter what flavor of Christianity it is because the hate always seeps out.

And what really hurts is seeing how right wing Jesus infected all of my family except Mom and Dad. Dealing with their hate, dealing with their intolerance and especially seeing how they totally embrace anything labeled with an R. Oh and they are also totally under the spell of Ayn Rand in their hatred of the government.

Of course, you know my story. I was one of those religious bigots, until I met some “liberal Christians” at college who taught me that there was another way to live, a way that didn’t involve being a paranoid slave to fear every waking moment. (I should really send my California pastor friend a card for helping rescue me from that hellscape.) What’s depressing to me is watching my otherwise intelligent and capable father, a leader in his professional field, degrade himself into a drooling QAnon moron because he is a slave to right-wing groupthink and he can’t apply critical thinking to areas other than his work.

Elon is desperate… Simply desperate to be seen as cool. But he gets bored. See his personal female relationships to serve as example of this character trait.

Previously his initial tendency was in service of getting to Mars. Getting to Mars take actual science, actual facts and actual research and engineering. This got boring. -especially as the $$$ Billions came rolling in.

Now Elon is fully on board with a new crowd to impress- the 4Chan 8Kun /whatever alt-right nut job fan site exists this week. His new user base are currently enjoying their new useful idiot toy. But as his wealth disappears in the next year and Twitter begins to finally circle the drain they will abandon him as he has his women. The trick is to limit the damage $180 Billion in lost cause money combined with ruined ego can do in between now and the eventual Twitter investor hit squad coming for Elon in 2023.

One thing I disagree with: the people who know what Taibbi and Weiss are doing also know that Republicans and the Supreme Court are trying to impose theocracy.

I also think the young fascists are so visible because they used to get drowned out by more moderate young people, but a large part of that group has swung left, leaving them more exposed. They also have more fascist support groups from older conservatives.

U.S. to announce fusion energy ‘breakthrough’

Scientists hit a key milestone in the quest to create abundant zero-carbon power through nuclear fusion. But they still have a long way to go.

The Department of Energy plans to announce Tuesday that scientists have been able for the first time to produce a fusion reaction that creates a net energy gain — a major milestone in the decades-long, multibillion dollar quest to develop a technology that provides unlimited, cheap, clean power.

washingtonpost.com

Note—back in the 70s Dad was a part of Admiral Rickover’s team at the Shippingport PA Nuclear plant and they built and test ran a breeder reactor based on Thorium which is unable to be used to make nuclear weapons. Their experiment succeeded and created more thorium after 2 years of operation. It was on track to create more fuel than it used…and then Pruneface Reagan killed the project…

When my BIL/SIL updated their fireplace the guy who did it fucked up and a fire started in the wall behind the brick. They caught it before the entire house burned down. Lots of smoke damage but no actual damage.

Paranoia is a good thing.

We just stuck an insert in the existing box and ran a new flue up through the existing chimney. Still scares the fuck out of me. But these new wood burning inserts have a cool design - they have a catalytic design so they recirculate the smoke and ash to burn it instead of sending it straight up the chimney. I can get a 10-14 hour burn on one load of wood apparently. Going on three hours now on three pieces of wood that used to burn to coal in a half hour in the open fireplace. Nice warm red glow.

There is no reason to think he believes he’s a centrist independent. He’s a liar like Trump; we have no idea what he truly believes except in oligarchy; the rich shall inherit the earth and since he may be the wealthiest person (or 2nd wealthiest person), he will inherit all and the rest will be his slaves until a 21st Century Robespierre overthrows him and slaughters all who hold his views, and the world descends into total chaos (good wordle word!).

My next door neighbor was something a firebug. Apparently he built a huge fire in the mass manufactured 1970’s concrete fireplace insert. The fire was so large that it lapped over and around the insert. And set the house’s wood frame on fire.

I was returning home when I noticed about a half dozen fire trucks around my house. Which kind of raised my blood pressure a bit And then saw the fire fighters clustered around the neighbor’s house. And my blood pressure returned to normal.

Fortunately, only a part of the framing around the fireplace and the associated aluminum siding was actually damaged. So the house remained fully inhabitable.

Iirc, one of the Super Bowl prelims was on the big screen tv in the family room. You could watch through the windows the firefighter running a hose against the fireplace. He would look for a second to verify that the hose was still aimed at the fireplace. He then would return his gaze to the football game.

You are so right. As another example, no matter how many times Trump praised vaccines, his base rejected them and now he has retreated on this front.

re: #66 Dopamine Fish

Yeah, I know. It’s just so frustrating to me. The old adage of Christianity is supposed to be, “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” American Christians don’t know how to do that; they can’t separate the sin from the sinner, so they’re all on board with hating anyone they regard as “sinners” because they think that’s what White American Jesus has commanded them to do. It’s so fucking stupid, but it’s everywhere, and my puny little voice doesn’t seem to matter against the onslaught of bulkshit from the pulpit pimps at the top.

That statement “love the sinner and hate the sin” is itself a hateful statement. Those who use it do not understand the person on the other side of that statement and why they are hurting them. “You’re gay? Well, that’s a sin but I love you.” (Unspoken part: If you don’t change who you are, you’re going to hell.) “You’re an atheist? That’s the unforgivable sin. It’s not me saying it, it’s the Bible. I love you but you’re going to hell and even God can’t save you.”

It never occurs to the Christian who uses the “love sinner, hate the sin” line just to use “love” and mind their own business on the rest. They are compelled to condemn people’s “sin” (who they are) because a book tells them to.

I’m all about small fires, manageable fires. Don’t have any interest in testing the capacity of this insert. And actually am looking into having someone inspect the installation in the spring. We only burn about a half dozen fires a year, the Pacific Ocean keeps us around 55-65 most of the time anyway - occasional dips into the 40s…rarely see frost on the car. It’s mostly for aesthetics.

It’s nice having that warmth radiating across the living room right now though, I will say. Will have to pick up a couple more bundles of wood at the store soon. Xmas parties and shit, you know.

I agree with you.

Building some sort of huge fire just to watch it burn, seemed like a lot of effort for very little return.

In my case, or at least fireplace, the terrible 1970’s mass prefab design basically sucks all the warm air out of the room whenever a fire is lit.

So, for my house, watching a fake fire on the tv next to the fireplace ends up being a lot warmer than an actual fire in the fireplace.

next stage is that Elon and the Maganaughts drive anyone and everyone decent off his platform, advertisers flee and he turns it into a Trumpless Truth Social, other platforms thrive as twitter users find and help grow new platforms that are not as Nazi friendly. Those fascists can all talk to each other over there and make sure to give themselves all the “positive” reinforcement they crave and they stay in their fucking bubble unsatisfied as all the libs have left. Sure Twitter had its moments, but you had to cultivate your own audience, and be dedicated to block the idjits, bots, trolls and sea-lions from your stream.

Those folks at counter-social, mastodon and Post have probably heard oodles about what type of environment they need to provide in order to attract posters and advertisers… while getting loads of content for free by people who want to share and engage with other people in good faith.

I’m pissed at them because they considered accessibility “extra” for disabled people. We know full well that accessibility is 1) NOT optional in 2022, and 2) affects ALL aspects of a product and it can’t be tacked on afterwards in version 1.1 let alone 2.0.

(The cruel thing is that the disabled community will stay away from Post, and their CEO will explain to the NYT that “no disabled person uses our service so why should Post accommodate them?” I see this all the time with restaurants that won’t fix their lifts.)

Their one constant with every failed presidential election is blaming the media for the failure of their ratfucking campaign.

When Obama won in ‘08, they claimed the media covered for him by “covering up” stories about birth certificates and college transcripts.

When he won again in ‘12, they started again with accusing the media of perfidy, only now it was insisting that they’d kept a lid on “BENGHAZI!!!111”

Yet when Hillary lost in ‘16, they suddenly lost all interest in all the “scandals” that they’d spent every waking moment of the election upon, especially the Buttery Males that supposedly deserved time in federal prison.

I’ve prattled on at length about worldview collapse, but even if I am boring people I think we have to recognize what is going on.

When a society’s beliefs (about itself and others and the world at large) are undermined, humans will look for others to blame, or scapegoats, for anything that will explain how they were mislead/duped/fooled.

The US is called a “first world” nation but unlike other first world nations we have not completed the transition away from our hyper-religious, somewhat isolated ideas of ourselves.

But the axe of modernity has been picking at the foundations of the old beliefs for quite some time now.

And with more and more Americans no longer aligning themselves with the traditional American religious ideas, our society is increasingly difficult to identify (pigeonhole) in regards to what we believe.

This new pluralistic result is really scaring people, some people anyway.

The need to blame China for anything (not just COVID-19) is increasingly becoming the forefront of American politics. Everyone wants to compare to China, including Biden.

This is yet another manifestation of our worldview collapse. For several generations now we’ve been told that we are number one, the best, the biggest, etc.

But the post-Mao China has slowly, faultingly, been moving to the top of the list of the world’s dominant nations.

And this scares some Americans.

And demagogues (and Elon has turned into one) will exploit every fear they can.

This is the biggest problem with people who are hating on the Muskrat. Keep in mind, I think the Muskrat is a Libertarian disaster. He is definitely NOT irrelevant to the success of the company making the Tech.

In every level of Agency, he is the driver of the Tech being made by his companies.

I believe that as far as Twitter is concerned, he is going to take a huge haircut because he’s a highly functional human on the Asberger’s spectrum who at a personal level doesn’t understand what social media means for tens of millions of people.

It’s not a business for them. It’s how they talk to each other.

Twitter will never make a huge amount of money from the Celtic musicians on SWMBO’s twitter feed. These are a group of professional and skilled amateurs, dedicated musicians, who love trading songs, gossip, upcoming fests, &c.

If he loses every single penny he spent on Twitter, plus spending an equivalent amount before realizing it’ll never be profitable, plus 95% of the rest of his money…

He’ll still be absurdly wealthy.

There is zero chance that anything he says or does, or anything anybody else says about or does to him, will ever ever ever leave him in financial distress.

Sooner or later an equivalent will come along. “Build it and they will come” goes the old trope.

If Mr. Musk continues platforming racists, Nazis, and other such characters, more people will leave in an accellerating arc. No amount of people saying “but my group needs Twitter” will convince those being harassed or threatened to stay.

Moreover, disabled groups are also being harassed on Twitter (sometimes dangerously so, such as those with epilepsy). They have a motivation to find another place and make it work, even if it’s not perfect.

If this goes on, Twitter will enter a fatal slide.

The sociopathic nature of this planning in most Western militaries is generally coupled with a strong effort to only send our children into battle for good reasons and to minimize risk where ever possible.

I have not seen much effort in that direction in the current Russian military.

Short thread on when the next Ukrainian offensive may occur. Basically, much of Ukraine has not yet frozen solidly enough. Which means lots of mud. That, in turn means that most vehicles cannot go very fast or far.

The expectation is that once the ground freezes sufficiently, the Ukrainians may retsart their offensives.

The Russian command seems to be aware of this. It is reportedly preparing a series of fortifications to the rear of current lines. And may retreat to them at the correct moment, defusing the Ukrainian offensive.

Some observers also believe that the current WW1 style offensive in Bakhmut is simply to keep the Ukrainians on the defensive. The fact that it is killing off thousands of Russian troops doesn’t seem to bother the Russian command.

Anyway, as I understand it, by the end of next week, Ukraine is expected to warm to above freezing through most of December. Which means the ground is not expected to freeze sufficiently for a Ukrainian offensive until January.

It looks to me that you have already put more thought and consideration into the troll’s claim than the troll did.

Interestingly, if one accepts the troll’s general thesis, your questions are very good follow through ones.

I rarely find trolls who actually are attempting to make a cogent or even consistent argument. And I doubt that this troll is any sort of exception.

I generally view these trolls as having lots of free time to waste and wanting to waste someone else’s as well. The old story about mud wrestling a pig often seems to apply here.

Being a former staff dude myself, authoritarians really, really underestimate international organization staff. The authoritarians are too lazy to pay attention to all the detail work, and invariably dismiss staff as weak little nobodies. Staff recruitment is usually pretty rigorous, the staff are pretty well qualified, and do a lot of analysis work. They know the rules and have got the receipts and can fuck you up if you blindly try to throw your weight around.

Some Elmo Smuk character tried to call out the UN World Food Programme last year, and promised to donate $6 billion in Tesla stock if they could give him a detailed plan on where it would all go. Being a proper staff, they sent him one, completed and coordinated. Um. So, Smuk donated around 5 million TSLA shares to…some unspecified charity. The WFP has apparently received $0.

I wonder if he’s starting to feel the heat from Mastodon. The default character limit to “toots” (Mastodon equivalent of tweet.) is 500 characters, but individual Mastodon servers can configure that limit higher if they want. As a result, I’ve seen the occasional single post on Mastodon that’s more the equivalent of a blog post than of a tweet.

Also, if Tumblr are serious about adding support for ActivityPub, (The protocol underlying services such as Mastodon) then their posts probably won’t have 500 character limit either.

There was a story circulated about the developer who pushed for and coded the increased 280 character limit, when he was summarily fired by Msuk because of course he was. There was a lot of code review that needed to be done to ensure that the increase did not break anything, and I believe a lot of other updates were necessary to allow the system to handle the new size. Well, he’s gone, as is most of the Twitter staff, and Msuk wants this 5000 character increase done, which will probably be considerably more difficult. If he actually demands it Twitter is going down hard.

Msuk seems to idolize the basement code hacker, not actual software engineers. If you want undocumented unmaintainable code that does what no user actually requested and breaks everything else, that’s the way to go I suppose.

I am still convinced that Mr. Musk, like many large “l” Libertarians, is actually opposed to both free speech and freedom of the press. Considering he is richer than God, I can easily imagine him buying Twitter (after trolling about it) so he could break it and shut it down.

That reminds me how Mr. Theil financed the case to bankrupt Gawker, and went after Juanita Jean and Wonkette (a mistake since Wonkette was able to bring on the ACLU, and Gawker is now back).

re: #203 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I am still convinced that Mr. Musk, like many large “l” Libertarians, is actually opposed to both free speech and freedom of the press. Considering he is richer than God, I can easily imagine him buying Twitter (after trolling about it) so he could break it and shut it down.

That reminds me how Mr. Theil financed the case to bankrupt Gawker, and went after Juanita Jean and Wonkette (a mistake since Wonkette was able to bring on the ACLU, and Gawker is now back).

I really don’t think Musk is that self aware. He certainly subscribes to the narcissist view of free speech, which means that he can say anything he likes without repercussions or criticism and if that means that no one else has free speech he doesn’t care. If he wanted to shut Twitter down, he could have done that day one and not look like an idiot over and over again.

I agree with the view that I’ve seen in several places, that Musk’s obsession with cancelling and shadowbanning and “free speech” and all the rest is a coping mechanism for right wing nutjobs. They think that their views are so self evidently correct, but they also are aware that most people either don’t care or actively reject them. It can’t be their fault, they can’t be wrong, so something must be interfering with the transmission. Therefore, it must be their enemies who are actively conspiring to shut them up in hidden and not so hidden ways, and they must be figured out and stopped at all costs.

Sold two other guitars to do it, but managed to get my hands on one of Fender’s new american vintage ii 1961 strats (I managed to snag one of two that apparently came off the factory floor and were on the Fender site as “in stock” for roughly the ten minutes it took two of us to buy them). Sweet Jesus! this is a nice guitar. 7.25” neck radius, which feels wonderfully comfy in my smallish hands. Yes, this does make some pull-offs on the first string a little challenging, as it’s easy to accidentally pull the string over the edge. The common complaint that the curvature causes bends to choke out is not something I’ve encountered. I know one complaint with strats is that the bridge pickup is weak, but not my experience here. At the moment, it’s mostly where I’m living. I have one setting on a nux mighty plug that dials in a really lovely country lick sound at the bridge, and then a setting that adds in some distortion and reverb that gives me a very attractive Bluesbreakers sound. The pickups on the ‘61 were built around the original ‘61’s specs, and my theory is that in 1961, the stratocaster was still mostly a rockabilly/cowboy chord instrument, as the era of screaming leads hadn’t yet arrived. Hence, the really country-toned bridge pickup.

So, let me get this straight.

The working theory is that Fauci worked with China on gain of function experiments, and one of those experiments escaped Wuhan facility and turned in to covid19? And Trump purposefully acted in a manner to maximize the body count from said covid19. GOPers likewise maximized death toll from covid19 by refusing to mask, social distance, or vaccinate. Trump claimed that China was doing a great job, and that covid19 would soon be near zero in the US.

But all that is on Fauci?

1.1 million Americans dead later, and the GOP are still trying to pin all this on Fauci, to absolve Trump and GOP for their disastrous handling of the pandemic.

Fauci, who did not set US policy on responding to the covid19 outbreak here.
Fauci, who did not see his policy preferences implemented by Trump, Pence, or Kushner.
Fauci, who was regularly overruled by Trump - Trump who did the opposite of what all actual health experts said.

I never liked this statement, and I respect the hell out of Sagan but that was his full-professor privilege talking. I don’t know how you could define “extraordinary” objectively, but from a practical perspective it means “extraordinary to your research supervisor and/or funding committee.”

You can actually take a hack at something like Occam’s Razor for an objective definition, but the statement as it is doesn’t fit the bill.

i look at it as a kind of shorthand.

i think, like many such popularized statements, maybe what they do is open the eyes just a bit. you hear sagan’s platitude, and might dig further into what exactly that means and where it came from and how to apply it. does it have any merit?

yes, it’s valid that there is no quantitative standard, more of a sort of thorny social agreement.

The fifteen-day claim period has been around for many decades.

The issue is out of the billions of pieces of mail the Postal Service handles every year, the amount of lost mail (even with DeJoy sabotaging the system) is insanely better than almost any other country.

The reason for that delay is so if a piece of mail is misdirected, it gives the Post Office time to direct it back to the correct address before filing a bunch of paperwork and then it shows up, wasting both their and your time.

For you of course, the misplacement or loss of your delivery is a significant inconvenience. For the millions of others who got their mail on-time, it was just another day.

I much prefer USPS here than paying more for UPS and them telling me “we don’t deliver to your area, come to our office sixty miles away to pick up your package.”

How one right-wing activist is fighting to ban over 3,600 books from Florida schools

The name of that activist is Bruce Friedman

He just moved from New York City to Florida and he’s on a rampage to remove thousands of books from libraries.

Friedman says he is just getting started. During a November 28 meeting of the Florida Department of Education Library Media Working Group, Friedman said he had compiled ‘a list of over 3,600 titles that I believe have concerning content,’ including ‘porn, critical race theory, social-emotional learning, [and] fluid gender.’ He said this list proves that ‘libraries have more than a little poison in them.’ Friedman demanded that the school board ‘clean up this mess.’ If not, Friedman threatened to ‘perform 3,600 challenges and overwhelm your awful, awful procedures and policies.’”

Among the books he forced the school board to remove is The Girl From The Sea, an award-winning graphic novel in which “two girls hold hands and, at one point, share a kiss. There is no sex, no swearing, and no nudity.” Friedman told Popular Information that he objected to the book’s presence because girls are “not in school to learn how to be better lesbians.”

“Friedman has exploited this policy by flooding the district with challenges. Friedman told Popular Information that, since June 30, he has ‘investigated between 5 and 10 thousand’ books available in Clay County school libraries on ‘a very cursory level,’” said the report. “Popular Information has obtained dozens of Friedman’s challenge forms through public information requests. Friedman, and a few others he recruited to assist him, filled out these forms identically. The reason for the request is to ‘PROTECT CHILDREN,’ the objectionable material is ‘INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT,’ and the impact of a student using the material is ‘DAMAGED SOULS.’ The answer to most other questions is ‘N/A.’”

This comes after a year of Republicans sparking moral panic over anti-racist and pro-LGBTQ content in books, filing legal actions to get them removed from school libraries and, in one case in Virginia, even from a Barnes & Noble bookstore.

Our state is considering a suit against our too-big-to-fail telephone company. They decided that they will charge $1 to anyone who receives a paper bill over receiving E-mail or “app” billing. Since a vast majority of the rural area of this state has no cell service or Internet service, the state considers it price-gouging.

Hah!

I had a friend who was in Vietnam.

He said that one night the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) attacked his firebase. When the grunts set off the claymores they had evidentially been turned around and were facing the US troops.

(Apparently the NVA sent in sappers before the attack to clear attack paths. And the sappers had reversed each claymore they found rather than disconnecting them.)

After that they grunts painted a huge white dot on the back of each claymore. And when they saw that dot move….

Tragic design flaw. It read “front towards enemy” but didn’t say which side was the front.

In the early days of the pandemic, I occasionally got a neighbor’s package, and I would simply deliver it to the appropriate neighbor myself. They returned the favor the one time they got one of my packages, as before we had a chance to track down the address where the package was actually delivered, it mysteriously showed up on our doorstep.

Spitballing about Sinema here. Assuming she is running for reelection in 2024, if the Democrats think Arizona could be the 50th seat, allowing them to retain control of the Senate, then the smart, if galling, move is to back Sinema and not run a Democrat in 2024. Even an awful Republican candidate like Masters will get at least 46% of the vote, virtually ensuring a GOP victory in a three way race. However, 2024 is a very tough map for the Democrats, so if they think they are going to lose control of the Senate anyway, they can clear Sinema out of the picture by running a credible Democratic candidate in 2024, then plan on trying to regain the seat in 2030 if a Republican wins.

Same here. I and the neighbors, who live one block down, but share the last 4 out of the 5 digits on our street addresses, return each other’s packages all the time. The drivers for USPS, UPS, and Amazon all seem to have gotten caught in this.

I will say that our current regular USPS letter carrier does do an excellent job. There was a nextdoor thread on crappy USPS service. And the only letter carrier to get all compliments and no criticism’s was our current one.

re: #245 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

About ten years ago, when my oldest son was in college, we needed to get a new debit card to him, from Texas to Iowa, like quickly. So we FedEx’d it. And it didn’t show up after the two day shipping. And we tracked it, and it was still stuck in one of their warehouses. It took nearly a week for them to finally find it in the warehouse. We did get our payment back.

I assumed that the account was created for some purpose or other. But that the human associated with the account (and probably multiple others) was uninterested in enlightened and thoughtful discourse.

A couple years ago I got a handmade glass centrepiece for a wedding in Kansas delivered by DHL. I was able to contact the woman who’d ordered it and the company which sent it, and told both I would express mail it from the Post Office so she would get in time for the wedding.

The woman contacted the company when she received it and sent me a thank you card. The company sent me a cheque for $100 (way more than the express mail postage) as a thank you.

The storm ripped apart the warehouse, spreading packages over a hundred miles away (my medications included).

It took some time to convince the VA that my drugs were gone and they needed to replace them (apparently they thought I was trying to scam controlled substances).

I look over the addresses every day or two in case I was sent something.* And if the package is addressed to a different building or apartment not in the building I take the package over to the complex office or leave it by the proper door.

* - Does happen every so often since I will get gift boxes from people. Like the chocolates I got from my financial advisor last week.

We’ll occasionally get a misdirected letter, newspaper, or magazine for someone else in town. When that happens, we’ll either put it in their mailbox (even though we’re in town we’re all technically on a Rural Free Delivery route) or take it to their home.

For misdirected mail which should be out-of-town, either take it to the Post Office or drop it in the mailbox.

re: #273 No Malarkey!

And the Democrats might also look long term here and decide to eat the loss anyways. Sinema is trying to set herself up as the “Young Bernie”. And between King, Sanders, and her a disturbing pattern is starting to develop where a politician essentially gets to sit there and gadfly the party while practically never doing anything to back the party’s other candidates. They just join the party long enough each election cycle to run and/or renew the threat of costing the party a seat. (Which arguably is only de facto theirs due to the caucus since it is technically “independent”.)

The USPS has procedures for misdelivered mail. I had to exercise those procedures in late 2020, when I started receiving hospital bills for a person who somehow put down our address. I seem to recall it involved writing “not at this address” on the envelope, and setting the flag for the postal worker to know to retrieve it and take it back to the post office for the postmaster to deal with.

The rest of the thread thanks to Anne:

I think Musty looks at Twitter and sees data and therefore money, but mostly he misreads people communicating for attention. And he thinks they should be talking about him, paying attention to him. This explains his ham-fisted shit-posting.

It also helps explain his hard turn to the right. If you give the conservative base what it wants (racism, conspiracy theories, etc.) they’ll give you attention. And I’m sure Musty looks at Trump and thinks, ‘First they give you their attention, then money, then loyalty.’

I think this also explains why Musty has people who will help him prop up this hellsite. Because if he turns it into a vehicle to hurt conservative boogeymen, that’s a win for them—and another avenue to control information and organizing by the masses.

Conservatives have made it abundantly clear over the last few years is that they’re done with democracy and ready for complete control. Having someone like Musty own a massive platform for organizing & information dovetails nicely w/those interests. Even if he’s a useful idiot.

I should add, i do think Musty is a smart person—in some areas. But he seems to prioritize manipulation for his own ends above all else and he clearly has massive blind spots. If this were a movie, his road to supervillianism would end poorly. But in the real world, who knows.

My, how times have changed! Richmond, the former Capitol of the Confederacy.

Although, it must be noted that white flight to the suburbs of Richmond over the past half century has made the city itself significantly African-American.

The removal was complicated because the monument is also Hill’s gravestone.

WaPo:Richmond’s last major city-owned Confederate memorial is now down

RICHMOND — Workers began dismantling this city’s last major icon to the Lost Cause on Monday morning, lifting a statue of Confederate Gen. A.P. Hill from its base in the middle of a busy intersection before a small crowd of onlookers.
*snip*
More than a dozen other Confederate monuments around this historic city have been removed since 2020, when social-justice protests triggered by the murder of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis finally forced Richmond to confront its memorial landscape.
*snip*
Once the stone base is fully opened up by workers for Team Henry, the Black-owned contractor that has overseen demolition of almost all the city’s monuments, a crew will extract Hill’s coffin. A funeral home will transport the remains to a burial plot in Hill’s hometown of Culpeper that the city of Richmond purchased for $1,000.

ckkatz  Dec 12, 2022 • 8:55:59am

Interesting, the meaning of the ellipse seems to be evolving.

And I am ending up on the geezer side. Which would not be a surprise…

The Ellipsis is Widening the Gap Between Millennials and Boomers. Here’s Why

“I emailed a professor to schedule a meeting to go over some classes and he replied with ‘Sounds good…we can meet then.’ I thought he hated me,” TikTok user @heyanoushka lamented in a viral video last month. “I will spend 10 minutes trying to interpret the tone of this ellipsis,” TikToker @megalybrak captioned a montage of e-mails from their manager. So what’s the deal with the ellipsis and why is it causing so much intergenerational confusion?
*snip*
Turns out, people were sprinkling their phrases with ellipses long before texts and Facebook comments existed. A look back at casual written communication of the past—old postcards, recipe books and informal notes—clued McCulloch into the intended use of the punctuation. “When we think about informal pre-internet writing, space was at a premium. If you’re sending someone a postcard, but you only have a small box to write in, you won’t speak in full sentences,” she points out. To save real estate on the page, the writer would string together thoughts using ellipses and dashes, rather than penning longer, formal sentences with periods. You wouldn’t want someone to read your brownies recipe only to discover you didn’t have space to include bake time or cooling instructions, right?
*snip*
But we no longer have to worry about running out of room on the recipe card. “It seems to be that using a dot-dot-dot imports an offline norm into an internet space,” McCulloch notes. The internet gives our words room to breathe. With the vast digital expanse at our disposal, we’re free to use as many line breaks as we’d like in e-mails or fire off 20 texts in a group chat. Run out of characters in a tweet? Simply pick up where you left off with a new tweet reply (or five). And as for that recipe? Write an entire essay about your childhood before getting to the instructions for the perfect double-chocolate brownie.
*snip*
So why do the dots cause so much drama compared to the innocuous dash or comma? To the younger crowd—whose first words to their crush probably went down on Instant Messenger—the ellipsis has taken on an entirely different meaning. “For people who primarily use line breaks as a way of separating their thoughts, the dot-dot-dot is then available for another meaning, and that other meaning is something left unsaid,” McCulloch tells us. To Millennials, the three dots are a punctuational bridge to nowhere, signaling hesitation, trailing off or—at worst—passive aggression. “I can’t wait to see your presentation…” suggests a continuation the writer is thinking, but won’t actually come forward with, like, “…because it’s sure to be a disaster.”

The Ellipsis is Widening the Gap Between Millennials and Boomers.

The only reason that TSLA stock isn’t falling through the floor despite seemingly falling demand is that investors think the slowdown is due to people delaying purchases until the new tax credit becomes available in 2023. If it turns out that it’s largely due to Tesla’s and Elon’s falling popularity, it wouldn’t surprise me if the stock falls by 90% from here.

There are a number of conservatives around me that drive Teslas, for various reasons. I live around a lot of engineers, so new tech is cool. Not having to go to the gas station, quite nice, and it also means they’re not paying gas taxes. And while they’re not all that concerned with saving the environment, people install solar panels to reduce their electric bills.

Of course she’s unhappy.

The tire marks over her rulings in this matter are still fresh…

She was always in the tank for Trump and the Appeals Court explicitly called her on the carpet for ignoring the facts and the law.

Clerks usually write the things, after talking to the judge to find out how the thing is supposed to go. I’m sure some judges are more detailed with their clerks than others. It wouldn’t surprise me if Loose Cannon went off on a rant at the 11th Circuit’s decision and the clerk just went, “Oooo-kayyyyyy… I’m just going to, um, write a very terse summary of the dismissal, is that alright?”

I was at dinner last Tuesday with friends; Friday the guy who sat next to me emailed us that he just tested positive. I am feeling fine and tested negative today, but some, even though they are vaccinated and boosted, are feeling anxious about getting together. After all, my friend had 5 shots and still got ill; I had 4 vaccinations when COVID struck me in September. How cautious do we have to remain? My sister said she would be fine with a complete shutdown but not many share that view. I am still planning on getting together with friends this afternoon and (probably) this evening.

I was going to say, does the senator from the Great State of Denial actually understand anything about the porn market? It’s 90% married men who are sexually frustrated because their marriages are dysfunctional and they can’t find a mistress. About half of those are “good, God-fearing Christians” whose marriages are broken because they’re abusive assholes. Also, it bears repeating at this point that the porn industry is the single biggest driver of technological advancement on the Internet.

I’ve lived thirty years in the Bible Belt, and the thing that people like you get wrong is that you’re never going to catch these people out on hypocrisy, nor will they ever enrage their base: they are all shamelessly in it solely for themselves.

A good point. However, if you think Arizona would be the 50th seat, passing up the opportunity to get dozens of lifetime federal judges confirmed just to get rid of Sinema is a high price to pay. OTOH, if you think the GOP will control the Senate whether Sinema wins or not, I would run a Democrat against her.

Issue with that is the possibility that the Democrats cave, Sinema wins, and then she opts to be the 50th seat for the GQP majority.

Scientists hit a key milestone in the quest to create abundant zero-carbon power through nuclear fusion. But they still have a long way to go.

A very, very long way to go as they are not going in that direction.

The NIF isn’t a power reactor, it isn’t even the prototype of a power reactor, it’s nuclear bomb research.
