The late political analyst Mark Shields was fond of classifying partisans into two types: those who seek converts and those who carry on crusades to root out heretics. Former President Trump is the ultimate heretic hunter. After Trump claimed the 2020 election was stolen, membership in the Republican Party required an oath of fealty to Trump’s “Big Lie,” and anyone who believed otherwise was automatically labeled a RINO (Republican in name only).

Related: Bannon pal Guo Wengui (Miles Guo) has an online army that he has directed to spread disinformation about Hunter Biden. Guo is a tricky character because he claims to be in America as a persecuted dissident while also organizing harassment campaigns against actual Chinese dissidents living in America. It’s pretty clear that he has connections to China’s security services, too. Interesting thread here (also see Evan Osnos in The New Yorker):

Make no mistake about it. The Republican Party has become Monty Python’s Silly Party.

United States Congressman Ryan Zinke (R-Montana) delivered a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday in which he proclaimed that a “deep state” along with “liberals” are engaged in a sinister agenda targeting himself and other conservatives.

“Donald Trump’s tax returns show he extended sweetheart loans to his three eldest children—Don Jr., Ivanka and Eric—saving them a small fortune while adding to the intrigue surrounding the former president’s tax maneuvers,” Forbes reports.

“The younger Trumps owed their father a collective $4.55 million and paid him roughly $50,000 in annual interest from 2015 to 2020… That figure suggests the heirs paid an overall interest rate of about 1.1%.”

it’s tax fraud to give your family (your ‘kids’) money and call it a loan.
unless it’s bona fide, with documented terms including a market interest rate.
interest that is actually paid

That’s an interesting question that I really do not have the answer for.

Yes, I fully agree with you that the teacher is indeed a victim of the kid’s mother. And probably a bunch of others. Who will most likely sleaze off scott free.

But also, she didn’t do the shooting. She was stuck with it. And she apparently took the victimhood that was handed to her and responded by doing something heroic.

That her injury deserves a response by society is important. Aid, recompense and punishment of those that caused her injury.

But also, should she be defined by what was done to her or how she responded.

Finaally, we have seen here so many examples of rwnj and performative idiots who embrace the mantle of victimhood and then use it as an excuse for rage and hate. I think that it is refreshing to see someone who is indeed a victim, respond in a heroic and socially positive way.

As always, ymmv may vary.

How the Biden administration can slow the GOP’s dangerous schemes
Jen Rubin
washingtonpost.com

For starters, the House GOP is spoiling for a fight on the debt limit. The rules package eliminates a long-existing parliamentary rule that automatically raised the debt ceiling whenever the House passed a budget. This will empower the House to hold the economy hostage to extract dangerous cuts to national security and crippling reductions in entitlements.
But the White House can defuse the extortionists’ bomb before it is detonated. It should plainly state that the president has the power to ensure Congress does not sabotage the full faith and credit of the United States.
Section 8 of Article I of the Constitution states that Congress has the power “to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts.” It further states that Congress has the power to borrow “on the credit” of the United States. Plainly, the Founding Fathers did not envision lawmakers deliberately refusing payment of debts and destroying the credit of the United States.
But the 14th Amendment makes clear that this power does not include the power to trigger a default. As constitutional scholar Laurence H. Tribe succinctly tweeted, “The debt ceiling is a misnomer: it does nothing to cap spending but just creates an illusory threat to stiff our creditors.” That’s because “[Section] 4 of 14th Amendment forbids defaulting on the nation’s debts.”
In other words, the Constitution compels the government to honor its debts. The administration shouldn’t need congressional action to do that.

She also quotes another article on the subject: verdict.justia.com

All going to depend on whether or not how deeply the issue is politicized. Which I will guess will depend on the political leanings of the parents. Sadly, it seems to be de riguere
these days any time anything with guns is involved: not hard to imagine the gun-nut lobby going ballistic if the parents lose their precious “2nd Amendment rights” to the “gun-grabbers” over what will certainly be framed as a “regrettable accident”…

You may remember some reporting that came out of Phoenix about how the police handcuffed a Wall Street Journal reporter because he was doing interviews in street clothes with customers outside a bank.

(You don’t think this guy wasn’t profiled? Of course he was.)

Well, the police are all “another hit piece” because the reporter has covered the Phoenix PD’s arrests of protesters (remember, the PD called protesters members of a gang and arrested them on that basis) and about how Arizona police departments are not keeping proper lists of cops who lie and commit crimes. The reporter is serving up another story in about 90 minutes, which I am sure is going to have the police union up in arms.

The training in battalion operations is very important. The battalion (500 soldiers and 50 armored vehicles) is the basic building block in how armies fight these days. Giving Ukraine a bunch of vehicles is nice. But showing them the best ways our experts can figure out on how to use those vehicles is the most important thing that we can do for them.

‘Go Woke Go Broke’: Gina Carano trolled as latest film ‘Terror on the Prairie’ makes $804 at box office (Meaww, January 9, 2023)

Gina Carano, an actress, and former MMA fighter is the target of trolls after her most recent film, ‘Terror on the Prairie’, earned $804 at the box office. ‘The Mandalorian’ star has been out of work for more than a year due to a string of divisive tweets she posted on social media. The actress must have truly battled to make a comeback because this is her return to the big screen after a long time.

Carano’s comeback film ‘Terror on the Prairie’ is produced by The Daily Wire and directed by renowned filmmaker Michael Polish. The former ‘Star Wars’ actor plays the character Hattie McAllister, a hard-working mother-of-two in the movie ‘Terror on the Prairie’ who stumbles onto a tiny Confederate gang while looking for her husband.

Telemark skiing is a very niche market, with just a few companies even making bindings. I know pretty much all the stuff that’s out there, even before I showed up to the shop in September, and we make the best binding bar none. Our skis are awesome, too. That’s the fastest growing part of the company and as far as I know we are the only company out there making telemark specific skis.

In the category “it’s projection with these assholes always”:

QAnon activist who says top Democrats are child abusers convicted of abusing 8-year-old boy (LGBTQ Nation, January 9, 2023)

A QAnon influencer who has accused prominent Democrats of pedophilia was himself convicted of pedophilia. He was confronted with his past in a new HBO documentary.

David Todeschini, 70, appears in journalist and YouTuber Andrew Callaghan’s directorial debut, This Place Rules. The film, which premiered on HBO on December 30, “explores the undercurrents that led to the January 6 Capitol Riot,” and features interviews from 2020 with people deeply enmeshed in far-right conspiracy theories.

In a clip from the doc that has made its way onto social media, Todeschini, who posts on social media under the name “David Trent” and reportedly attended the rally prior to the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, asserts with no evidence that Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, and President Joe Biden are all pedophiles. The QAnon conspiracy theory states that there is a secret, international cabal of satanic child molesters controlling the world that is run by top Democrats and Hollywood personalities.

Texas trying to catch up to Florida.

Two Texas bills would restrict lessons about sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools (Texas Tribune, January 9, 2023)

The legislation closely mirrors a Florida bill passed last year, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law, which detractors say would further isolate LGBTQ students and open teachers and school districts to legal risks.

Two bills that would ban classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in Texas public schools before certain grade levels are poised to receive top Republican backing in this year’s legislative session. But critics warn that the legislation could further marginalize LGBTQ students and families while exposing teachers to potential legal threats.

The two bills — authored by Reps. Steve Toth, R-The Woodlands, and Jared Patterson, R-Frisco — closely resemble legislation out of Florida that critics dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law. House Bill 631 and House Bill 1155 are among a flurry of anti-LGBTQ legislation awaiting lawmakers when they return to the Capitol on Tuesday.

No. But I’ve done that work, sort of. Four times now I’ve set up and run a demo tent at the bottom of a ski area where people can try our stuff on snow, so I’m definitely learning how to sell them! I’ll be doing that again in 12 days at Monarch Mountain.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: HEY, Y’ALL, I’M NORMiAL NOW! (Wonkette, January 9, 2023)

One of our favorite things during Kevin McCarthy’s week of asking to be peed on (WITH VOTES!) was the attempted transformation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Jewish Space Lasers) into a Very Serious Politician. She decided early on that it was wisest to throw her lot in with the majority of House Republicans, the establishment if you will. She knew, because of her political acumen and experience, that if Republicans want to get anything done, they’ve got to pull together around their Dear Leader Kevin.

We loved her Elder Statesman Marjorie Taylor Greene interviews:

Performative outrage, part 2e33+1

An old photo of first lady Jill Biden cooking with a gas stove has gone viral this week as the Biden administration is weighing the ban of such appliances, according to a report.

“Hey @Antoni, what are you cooking tonight?” Biden wrote on Twitter in September 2020, including the photo of herself using a gas stovetop to cook and directing the question toward Canadian chef and TV personality Antoni Porowski.

The photo surfaced just days after Bloomberg first reported that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is considering a ban on gas stoves because of concerns about indoor air pollutants from the appliances.

It might not have had a big box office but rotten tomatoes gave it good ratings. Not a large number of critical reviews. But it may also suffer from pandemic effect on movie turnout.
