Friday Morning Science: What if Black Holes ARE Dark Energy?

Science • Views: 10,515

YouTube

We tend to imagine there are connectings between things that we don’t understand. Quantum mechanics and consciousness, aliens and pyramids, black holes and dark matter, dark matter and dark energy, dark energy and black holes. Usually there’s no real relationship whatsoever, but this last pair—black holes and dark energy being the same thing—has received some recent hype in the press. Let’s see if it might actually be true.

I am thinking that I should return it because I do not remember anything about this. It might even be a scam.

It could be a pretext to discover your bank information.

Apple will pay $95 million to resolve an AppleCare lawsuit claiming provided remanufactured Apple products as replacement devices. The settlement benefits individuals who purchased AppleCare or AppleCare+ for an iPhone or iPad after July 20, 2012, and received a remanufactured Apple replacement device.

I always love to answer back when they come up with that angle that President Biden or someone he hires could then go to the Supreme Court, shoot all the conservative judges, be immune from prosecution or pardon the person he hires to do the job. Put his list of judge candidates in front of the senate, threaten to kill any who votes against them. And there would be nothing anyone could do about it because he is THE PRESIDENT!

Crap, got CL’d regarding Philly Pretzel’s sudden $14.45 windfall from an Apple lawsuit. Reposting my answer here:

You should be good. This is legit. I got one yesterday for the same amount and the better half got one for $26. It has something to do with a class action lawsuit against Apple; specifically dealing with AppleCare and them giving you refurbished items when your original can’t be fixed.

For what it’s worth, I barely remember what interaction I’ve had with Apple that would warrant this. For all of the hate they get, Apple’s stuff is usually pretty solid. I’ve had to have to deal with Apple hardware support maybe seven times over 29 years.

Still, I’d call that number if you’re still suspicious. I almost got suckered into a check scam for a much, much larger fee recently, so it doesn’t hurt to be cautious.

Babylon 5’s Creeping Fascism Hits Harder Than Ever [The Companion]

J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5 saw humanity’s future as echoes of its past. Nowhere is this warning more urgent than ‘The War Prayer’.

In engendering the universe of Babylon 5, J. Michael Straczynski’s particular genius was to postulate a future in which human nature is the same, only more so. No benign, sexless, antiseptic cosmos for Straczynski. Port of call Babylon 5 is a smoky, dirty microcosm where one’s worst impulses were wont to run amuck. If the squeaky-clean Starship Enterprise gave you the heebie-jeebies, you’d feel right at home aboard Babylon 5, and nowhere are its themes more clear than the episode ‘The War Prayer’ (S1, Ep7).

eventually i remember:
sometimes the condensate discharge line gets blocked.
there’s a condensate overflow switch to prevent a flood when the water backs up

The problems are twofold:

1. Whatever the settlement amount is, over half goes to the lawyers.

2. A $26 Million (for example) settlement seems substantial, but if 500 000 people make claims as part of the class, it works out to $52 a pop.

I was going to say, breakers don’t just trip themselves. My guess is that the leak shorted the bottom element, and that was what tripped the breaker.

Only about 40% of the Nebraska legislative session remains. The filibuster is back on.

The anti-trans bill was passed out of committee weeks ago, and now the GOP legislators want to add amendments to it to make it seem less draconian. State senator Machaela Cavanaugh (District 6, Omaha) says they will vote on their bill exactly as they passed it. They have to own their hate.

No bill has been passed during the entire session due to the filibuster.

Breaking News: A suspicious white powder was just discovered inside an envelope at the Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s office, just hours after Donald Trump threatened “death and destruction” if he is indicted.

Get Don, Jr. over there. Any mound of white powder will be “disposed” of by him in seconds.

Well, I feel dumb. The hot water heater breaker was tripped, which I did not see when I looked at it. The plumber reset the breaker. That will be $316.

The water is heating now.

Always try turning it off and turning it on again first./

Meanwhile, they want Hunter Biden indicted despite no investigation turning up criminal activity, with the worst alleged criminal activity so far usually resulting in the accused working out a payment schedule for unpaid taxes in lieu of jail time.

LOL, I got six boosters. You know what they did?

Kept me out of the fucking hospital and possibly dying when I finally did catch COVID.

Even as a teenager, I’ve had a less than stellar view of my fellow humans (you can thank my dad, Peanuts, and Mad for that). Still, the amount of people, especially conservatives, with a straight up fucking death wish about COVID is stunning.

There are literally huge chunks of this country where the prevailing attitude is “If I get it, spread to you, and it either fucks up or kills us? Well, sucks to be you.” I’m having hard time believing that people were this nuts in 1918, when science literacy and education in general was possibly lower than it is now.

Meet ‘the five families’ that wield power in McCarthy’s House majority
wapo.st (gift link)

Goes into GREAT detail about the House Majority, with all of its caucuses, and the spread of ideologies and various nuttiness. If you are a geek, it is an article worth saving.

Know Gary Palmer, Garret Graves, Dusty Johnson, Kevin Hern, David Joyce, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Emmer… all people in the leadership.

McCarthy had intentionally brought in representatives from each of the Republicans’ five ideological caucuses, reminiscent of how “the five families” in “The Godfather” met to strategize in an effort to keep the peace.
The comparison stuck.
Each week the House is in session, the chairs of the five caucuses meet in the speaker’s office to discuss how lawmakers in their individual factions feel about bills that are set to be voted on in the near term and strategize on how to reach common ground on more consequential items that must be addressed in the not-so-distant future.
The “five families” represent a range of views, from the most moderate who are willing to work with Democrats to the ultraconservative who often push leadership to accept their demands in return for their votes.
Most Republicans belong to at least one group, but many claim membership in more than one due to personal interests and political leanings.

Probably from their laundry rooms?

And long-ago as the anthrax scare was, the threat is still not something LE is going to want to minimize. I’m sure Bragg’s little “love letter” is most-likely harmless (one hopes), but there’s no guarantee the next one will be.

What they have both realized is that Democracies work because everyone agrees to follow the unwritten rules, namely that if you lose a battle you accept the results and move on. They don’t do that, and the system locks up when they do.

Mark Meadows, Stephen Miller, and other former top Trump aides tried to claim executive to get out of Jack Smith’s subpoenas…. DENIED.

Meadows, other top Trump aides ordered to testify in Jan. 6 probe as judge rejects claims of executive privilege - ABC News

abcnews.go.com

In a sealed order last week, Judge Beryl Howell rejected Trump’s claim of executive privilege for Meadows and a number of others, including Trump’s former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, his former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, former top aide Stephen Miller, and former deputy chief of staff and social media director Dan Scavino, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Former Trump aides Nick Luna and John McEntee, along with former top DHS official Ken Cuccinelli, were also included in the order, the sources said.

Trump is likely to appeal the ruling, according to sources briefed on the matter.

And - as if we need any more proof that Donald Trump is full of shit, I crunched some numbers from the 2021 election in NYC -

Alvin Bragg won the Manhattan DA election with 211,686 votes (out of 279,217 - 75.84%): which, based on the Borough’s 2020 census figures, is 12.5% of the entire population*: or 19.7% of the “active” registered voters**. That only 26% of the registered voters in New York County came out for the local election is a pretty poor reflection on our democracy, but turnout has probably been worse in other contests: and it still isn’t the “less than 10%” The Orange Anus claims….

* 1,694,251 (2020 Census)
** 1,070,965 (NYC Board of Elections for 2/21)
