Profound thoughts by C Kirk in the article:

This is gonna change conservative media, maybe for the better, maybe for the worst, maybe right down the middle, but it will change.

He also credits T Carlson for creating the “ideological atmospherics” for Elon Musk to purchase Twitter as if that is supposed to be a positive.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., on Monday asked GOP megadonor Harlan Crow for a complete list of gifts to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and evidence that the billionaire real estate developer complied with federal tax law in connection with the long-undisclosed largesse to Thomas.

“This unprecedented arrangement between a wealthy benefactor and a Supreme Court justice raises serious concerns related to federal tax and ethics laws,” Wyden, who heads the Senate Finance Committee, wrote in a six-page letter to Crow.

Wyden’s letter was sent as Thomas and the Supreme Court itself face criticism following an April 6 report by ProPublica that the CEO of Crow Holdings for more than two decades has treated the conservative justice to luxurious trips worth at least hundreds of thousands of dollars.

ProPublica also reported on April 13 that a Crow company in 2014 purchased three properties in Savannah, Georgia, from Thomas and his family, including a home where the justice’s mother has lived rent-free for more than a decade.

Interesting that Josh thinks Fucker C’s firing was triggered by Ray Epps…

talkingpointsmemo.com

As I’ve been writing this post the only plausible theory I’ve seen is that Carlson’s departure is somehow tied to Ray Epps’ demand for an apology from Carlson over the litany of crazy stories about him boosted on Fox. It’s the only broadly plausible theory I’ve seen. But it still seems like a stretch on numerous fronts. Presumably we’ll know more soon enough.…Josh at TPM

Sometimes it is just a random misfiring.

Sometimes, it is a sign of a whole bunch of hidden issues.

Dangerman  Apr 24, 2023 • 11:38:51am

Saturday night the Hard Rock Heals Foundation Presented a Benefit for Ukraine War Victims at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Hollywood Florida.

(hidden for length. don’t let this minor little story get lost among the deluge of firings)

One of the companies MrsDm reps for donated for the silent auction, so we, being the closest, attended the event.

There were about 100 tables so figure 800-1000 people. I believe they raised $500k or so.

At table 73 I was seated next to Olena and her partner David.

Olena is Ukrainian. She left 20 years ago for Canada. She wanted to further her education and learn English. David is Canadian and they met at work about 5 years ago.

She and David work in government (I didnt ask) and he got posted to Miami for the last 3 years or so.

So I asked whether she had family there.

Her mom is an ovarian cancer survivor from 18 months ago; the before times. Health care being what it is, thanks to Olena being 20 years in canada and another sibling 10 years in Denmark they were able to send back money and support. Mom was able to get a better place to live and be comfortable.

This is Kharkov, where they grew up.
Eventually it gets bad. It’s now mostly rubble.

They have to move 70km away.
To a place where her mom’s mom (grandma) used to live.

Grandma would say “I got this land and built this big house in the middle of nowhere for each of my daughters. You will need it.”

There is a well with fresh water. Plantings of fruits and vegetables.
Supplies, and survivable.

Now mom and both aunts - the three sisters - ended up there.

Who would have predicted this? That a summer house so far from the city would become so vital? Grandma. Because she’d been through it before.

Fortunately they keep in touch every day. Modern phones and tech being what they are.

I asked why they don’t leave. She’s asked too.
They say “if we leave, who is left?”
So they stay.

Forgive me if I didnt get the entire story straight.
It was loud, she was talking, i was typing into my phone, they were auctioning, there was applause, etc…

Up to Saturday the war was a far off thing to me. Something we discussed here sometimes, and it comes up in the news now and again, but not like in the beginning.

In a flash it went from that to I’m sitting next to someone who has parents and family *in it*.

It’s good to see a lie called a lie. Republicans spend far too much time lying about everything to the point where anyone stupid enough to follow their lead can wind up choking to death on their own fluids.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo personally altered a state-driven study about Covid-19 vaccines last year to suggest that some doses pose a significantly higher health risk for young men than had been established by the broader medical community, according to a newly obtained document.

Ladapo’s changes, released as part of a public records request, presented the risks of cardiac death to be more severe than previous versions of the study. He later used the final document in October to bolster disputed claims that Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were dangerous to young men.

The surgeon general, a well-known Covid-19 vaccine skeptic, faced a backlash from the medical community after he made the assertions, which go against guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and American Academy of Pediatrics. But Ladapo’s statements aligned well with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ stance against mandatory Covid-19 vaccination.

Researchers with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and University of Florida, who viewed Ladapo’s edits on the study and have followed the issue closely, criticized the surgeon general for making the changes. One said it appears Ladapo altered the study out of political — not scientific — concerns.

“I think it’s a lie,” Matt Hitchings, an assistant professor of biostatistics at the University of Florida, said of Ladapo’s assertion that the Covid-19 vaccine causes cardiac death in young men. “To say this — based on what we’ve seen, and how this analysis was made — it’s a lie.”

He was pushing back pretty hard against Ramaswamy’s right wing lies. Poppy Harlow was clearly hearing from producers as it was happening; she looked really uncomfortable, checking her phone for messages.

CNN is making a hard right turn, and that was not in the script.

There’s a reason they had Ramaswamy on, and it wasn’t to make him look bad. My guess is that he was promised a puff piece, Don Lemon (in a rare moment of sanity) decided to do an actual interview, and CNN execs heard about it from Ramaswamy’s staff and the few in the right wing fever swamp who actually watch CNN.

Lara Trump Out as Fox News Contributor

thedailybeast.com

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, is no longer a paid contributor to Fox News, which has a policy of not employing anyone connected to an active campaign. The Los Angeles Times reports that while Lara Trump’s exit appears to be amicable, it probably won’t break Fox boss Rupert Murdoch’s heart; he’s made it clear he doesn’t support her father-in-law’s attempt to retake the Oval Office. Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, has not been on Fox’s airwaves since Donald Trump’s announcement.

Fox News staff bewildered after being blindsided by Tucker Carlson departure

On Monday, his Fox News colleagues were stunned by Carlson’s departure. “We’re just learning of this like everyone else, total surprise on my end,” one staffer told The Post, speaking on condition of anonymity to share private insights into the newsroom.

Another on-air personality added: “This is major. It sends a message that even the guy with the highest ratings of all, by a long shot, doesn’t get to survive this disaster.”

It fell to Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner to announce Carlson’s departure to Fox viewers on Monday.

“We have some news within our Fox family,” she said. “We want to thank Tucker Carlson for his service to the network, as a host, and prior to that, as a long-term contributor.”

not whether you personally ever had a specific case before his court

the issue is the judge is tainted, definitely in appearance and likely in fact.

It’s an interesting puzzle, especially the suddenness of it. If it were just about the money, I think Fox would have followed their usual formula of a vacation followed by dismissal.

Another piece of the puzzle is that something this big, this quick, had to come from the top (i.e., old Rupert himself).

So what could Tuckums have done to personally piss off Rupert Murdoch after signing off last Friday?

163
Dangerman  Apr 24, 2023 • 1:24:54pm

The decision to fire Tucker Carlson came straight from Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Carlson’s exit is related to the discrimination lawsuit filed by Abby Grossberg, the producer fired by the network last month… Carlson’s senior executive producer Justin Wells has also been terminated.”

“Murdoch is also said to be concerned over Carlson’s coverage of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, in which the host has promoted the conspiracy theory that it was provoked by government agents.”

Twitter committed to fund a series startups particularly from underrepresented backgrounds. When Musk took over Twitter stopped providing the committed funds.

In January, the leaders of several venture capital firms that had taken money from Twitter received a note from their last remaining contact at the social media company. Sent from a personal account, the email informed them that the team that stewarded those investments had been obliterated as part of Elon Musk’s shambolic takeover of the social media platform.

Someone in Musk’s sphere would likely reach out, the former Twitter employee explained. But neither they, nor their former colleagues, almost all of whom had quit or been laid off, knew who that might be or what would happen next. “The person who did this was trying to help some of the GPs [general partners] who were hurt by [the departures],” one venture capitalist told Forbes. “They apologized for their inability to do better by them.”

Before Musk took it private in October and gutted it, Twitter the public company was an active and outspoken corporate backer of the startup ecosystem. In recent years, those investments especially focused on founders and funders from underrepresented backgrounds. On the startup side, that’s included Black-led 7th Ave, a toolmaker for web3 creators. On the venture side, Twitter announced commitments to six firms in 2021, including MaC Venture Capital, the firm co-led by former Washington, D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty, and Female Founders Fund. All told, Forbes found that Twitter promised to invest about $1 million to $2 million each, or about $20 million overall, in those firms and in at least four others led by Black, Latinx or women partners.

But the Russians, to a degree, have to take any Ukrainian beach-head positions with some seriousness. If the Ukrainians establish a number of them it becomes a bit of a shell game on whether any of them will actually be used as part of an offensive.

And the Russians can potentially use assets trying to remove them. Which, if they attack a valid advance position is a good use. Otherwise, they are wasting precious ammo and troops against a feint.

Mass text sent out to Ammon Bundy’s followers sparks worry of another standoff

Ammon Bundy Sparks Standoff Scare After Court Loss

thedailybeast.com

A judge issued a default ruling against Bundy in a hospital harassment case. Hours later, fans received an “emergency alert” summoning them to his Idaho home.

Shortly after the judge’s Monday ruling, PRN followers received texts from the organization, asking them to report to Bundy’s house.

“EMERGENCY ALERT,” read one of the mass messages. “Ammon Bundys home in idaho is currently surrounded by law enforcement. He is calling for people to come to his aid.”

The message went on to list Bundy’s address, as well as the phone number for the Gem County Sheriff, which followers were instructed to call “and let them know this is not OK.”

The supposed police raid was less dramatic than the text let on. A livestreamed video from one Bundy supporter appears to show a sheriff truck driving away from Bundy’s property.

The Gem County Sheriff’s office, which did not return a request for comment, told the Idaho Statesman on Monday morning that no one was trying to arrest Bundy at that time.

‘Suddenly silent’ Tucker Carlson lawyers up

alternet.org

Tucker Carlson, after parting ways with Fox News Monday morning, has reportedly retained a powerful and “aggressive” entertainment attorney, which could mean the right-wing cable channel might be facing yet another lawsuit, or at least a likely legal battle.

Brian Stelter, the former CNN media reporter, tweeted that Carlson has “retained the famously aggressive entertainment lawyer Bryan Freedman.” (He also notes now-former CNN anchor Don Lemon has also retained the same lawyer.)

There was an incident some years back where the BLM wanted to get Bundy’s cattle off public lands where he was illegally grazing them.

The Feds sent out a team to round the cattle up. And also an armed security team to protect the round-up team.

In response Bundy called for the Western anti-Fed radicals to come help defend his cattle.

Several hundred armed men showed up. And they brought their families with them. And then placed those women and children around themselves and explicitly in the likely line of fire.

The feds backed down and left.

Not everyone is too thrilled with idea of remaking “Snow White,” most notably Peter Dinklage. The Emmy winner guested on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast this week and criticized remaking “Snow White” due to the fairytale’s “fucking backwards” depiction of dwarfs.

“There’s a lot of hypocrisy going on,” Dinklage said. “Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me.”

Dinklage continued, “You’re progressive in one way but then you’re still making that fucking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the fuck are you doing, man?

From the article

Multiple Russian, Chinese, and Iranian state media outlets on Twitter simultaneously began to gain followers after months of decline or stagnation, the DFRLab has discovered. A DFRLab assessment suggests that Twitter changed its algorithms regarding these accounts around March 29, 2023. NPR confirmed on April 21 that Twitter had made the deliberate decision to stop filtering government accounts in Russia, China, and Iran. That same day, Reuters reported that Twitter had removed its state media labels from their accounts as well.
*snip*
Meanwhile, many trusted news outlets in the US that receive limited government support, including NPR and PBS, have quit using the platform in recent days over disputes about Twitter labeling them as state-affiliated outlets. These labels were removed at the same time as their removal from Russian, Chinese and Iranian state media accounts. The exodus of reliable news outlets, combined with Twitter no longer moderating state-sponsored accounts which have built up significant presences, could lead to a very different information environment on Twitter. Russian, Chinese, and Iranian state media organizations have a significant presence on the platform; Russian television network Russia Today (RT) has at least nine accounts labeled by Twitter as “government-affiliated,” while the Chinese television network China Global Television Network (CGTN) has at least twenty-eight accounts labeled by Twitter, and Iran’s PressTV has at least five. Many of these accounts are targeted to specific regions and languages or topics.

I lied. The first shop I worked at was run by two women, who hired me because I was a woman. I was so good, I was suspected of cheating while I was being trained. It was supposedly a ‘collective’, but these two women ran it. Two men worked there, also. Later, the brother of one of the women was hired. When they had a meeting without telling me, at which they ‘laid me off’, I forget how I did it, but I made them change their registration with the state, to reflect the absence of ‘collective’.

Donald Trump in 2012 allowed a non-binary beauty queen to compete in his Miss Universe competition, a move that comes in stark contrast to the rhetoric he now routinely uses and the current attitude of the Republican party.

Trump in 2012 overturned a decision by the Miss Universe organization disqualifying 23-year-old Jenna Talackova, a Canadian model who the group wanted to ban from the competition, saying she isn’t a “naturally born” female, Fox News reports.

Never been a fan of Kilmeade. Was once gifted a history book he co-wrote with Don Yaeger on Thomas Jefferson and the Barbary Pirate wars.

The scholarship was sort of shoddy. The prose not very entertaining to read. And I really dislike modern politics projected onto historical subjects unless the comparison or similarities are the projected reason for the book. (Stuff like this also makes it very easy to date when a book was written due to these references suddenly cropping up.*)

* - I intensely disliked what is supposed to be a good biography of Ben Franklin for the exact same reason.

My father liked sloppy joes. My mother could never make them the way his mother did. And she tried 3-4 different recipes and still couldn’t hit the right combination. So, finally, she asked my grandmother about the recipe. Which was to brown hamburger and then add a lot of ketchup to it.

re: #302 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

My father liked sloppy joes. My mother could never make them the way his mother did. And she tried 3-4 different recipes and still couldn’t hit the right combination. So, finally, she asked my grandmother about the recipe. Which was to brown hamburger and then add a lot of ketchup to it.

Aunt Viv’s were spicy and I always thought she put diced Ortega chiles in her Sloppy Joes. But she had a special sauce that probably had more ingredients in it than Lum’s Ollieburgers.

Heavily diced onion, bell pepper, the usual tomato & my son like corn in it too.

I add carrot, celery, and mushrooms in addition to the onion and bell pepper, all diced down to the same size.

And whatever random chile I have lying around.

This time…since I’m realizing I’ve got all the components and it would be a convenient thing to have around for quick meals…that means some poblanos that have gone red.

It becomes ever more important for Democrats in other states to support us here in Nebraska, the only remaining state in the Great and High Plains where abortion remains legal.

We already know what will happen: The Democratic Party abandoned us long ago. We’re on our own here, while coastal state residents say “we deserve it.”

The DLCC (the Democratic Party’s state and local fundraising arm) has never financed a single Democratic candidate in Nebraska in its entire history.

The DLCC focuses on “safe” races and swing states, counties, or cities.

A drive is under way to recall the Republican mayor of Omaha, Jean Stothert, because she lives in St. Louis, Missouri, in violation of the city charter. She tried to have the city charter changed, but the city council voted down her attempt. Then-Governor Pete Ricketts supported her attempt to stay as mayor, claiming Democrats were politicising the issue (of politics).

That’s our tourist slogan. The state motto is “Equality before the law.”

Pete Ricketts directed the state tourism board (which is under control of the governor) to use a connected Colorado company to come up with a new slogan. That’s what they came up with.
