I think similarly. Without compettiton, all animals will expand their populations until they either run out of food or their waste products destroy the habitat. We are in the process of dealing with the latter, I expect many intelligent civilizations fail to get through things like climate changes, etc and fail. Will we? Hope not.

For most species, what will happen if they overconsume is they source of food becomes scarce and their group is reduced in population. We are different in that we can adjust our living conditions - we can move, or switch food sources, or invent new ways of obtaining the food, for example - in order to minimize this. But that same ability can lead people to think that we can overcome everything, or, in some cases, think that something else must be in control. The question does become about whether or not we can do something at this point.

The Veritasium video was really cool and it means there’s something else I want to know. Most of the math I have talked about are infinite length decimal numbers. To actually talk about infinite numbers greater than zero, and to tie them into fractals. So cool.

They exist practically everywhere now that has English as a primary language. The ones who have the least tolerance for them are the Aussies on account of two of their own getting killed by a couple of “Freemen” this past year. Now if you try that shit at a traffic stop, they give you one chance to rethink your whole “freer than thou” attitude, then they haul you out and slap cuffs on you.

So either you believe the AZ GQP that this bill was meant to address a single incident that was addressed at the administrative level by the teachers losing their jobs after they got caught having sex in a classroom during off-hours, in which case this is bill is an overly-broad attempt that is the legislative equivalent of trying to swat a fly with an RPG.

OR you look at the full bill in the context of the GQP’s efforts in multiple states and see that it was yet another attempt to bind the hands of teachers by scaring the shit out of them with an overly vague law that would make them afraid to recommend any books to their students for fear that a parent mind find “sex” in their pages and send their child’s teacher to prison for 2 1/2 years.

IOW, they’re either guilty of the sort of nanny-state extremism that they regularly accuse Dems of or of trying to further censor the speech of the state’s educators.

Kari Lake lied by omission. The bill does stop people from filming sexually explicit content in classrooms, which happened exactly once (they were fired). If that’s all the bill did, pass it and move on.

But:

Sen. Jake Hoffman, R-Queen Creek, put out a statement earlier this week asking Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs to sign his Senate Bill 1696, which would make it illegal for sexually explicit acts to be filmed or facilitated on property owned, leased or managed by the state or any other government entity in Arizona.

But the bill also stops workers for any government agency in the state from referring minors to sexually explicit materials, which could stop public librarians from referring teens to some classic works of literature and even informative books about reproduction and puberty.

“I think we are in good order to cover both topics at once,” Hoffman said during a Senate Government committee meeting in February. “I don’t want minors in Arizona being exposed to sexually explicit materials.”

What they did with the bill was slip in a book ban so they could use a motte-and-bailey fallacy to defend the bill and smear Democrats.

The bailey: Defending book bans. That is starting to get real pushback and is very hard to defend now.

The motte: Using classrooms to film sexually-explicit material is an easy ban to defend.

If they’re truly concerned about filming porn in classrooms, they could put up a clean bill to ban that. A conservative can’t do that. They must lie about their real purpose. So, the filming ban to cover their real purpose: Ban books.

Yeah, I scanned over the text of the bill last night as well as a few other stories about it not coming from the echo chamber Lake links to. And the best the BSAB crowd can offer in defense of a bill that would send teachers to jail for 2 1/2 years for recommending The Great Gatsby is that standard “Oh, they would never do that” bit. You know, because never in the history of the Republic has a prosecutor with an axe to grind and a hard-on for “moral crusades” exploited massive loopholes in the law to go after those they view as “the enemy.”

An idle thought I just had: The chain of custody of the “Hunter Biden laptop” supposedly goes: Hunter -> John Paul Mac Isaac -> Rudy Giuliani. America’s favorite drunk lawyer spent time sniffing around in Ukraine for Hunter Biden secrets and was fed lots of stuff that looks, for all intents and purposes, like it came from Russian disinformation. (Now currently the subject of Congressional clown James Comer’s contempt of Congress motion.) It is also, according to independent computer forensics experts, impossible to determine what was originally on the laptop’s hard drive image and what has been manipulated or outright invented. Could that have originated with Rudy, or rather one of his tech-savvy Russian connections, to attempt to plant incriminating information on a device whose provenance could be plausibly linked to the President’s son?

How can anyone say, with a straight face, that the Republican Party is in favor of “positive economic changes” when they literally just tried to tank the US economy? That is not what a party of fiscal responsibility does. They can argue until they’re blue in the face about “limiting government spending,” but that is a shell game; those negotiations belong in the budget bill, not in determining the fate of the full faith and credit of the United States. But what am I saying? Congressman Donalds doesn’t actually believe a word of what he just wrote. He is just parroting the party line because that’s all that’s in his empty head. He is a well-conditioned biological robot.

I think wha you speculate is very much true- Guiliani wasusing Russian psyops. Because, as I understand it, the supposed “informant” complaint that the GOP-led committee is going after Wray for was apparently also brought over from Russia in a tranch of material from Rudy.

A group of biochemical engineers, Siavash Ahrar, Manasi Raje, Irene Lee and Elliot Hui at the University of California, Irvine, has developed a finite state machine (FSM) implemented as a pneumatic circuit using microfluidic valves to build a lab-on-a-chip. Their work is published in the journal Science Advances.

Over the past several years, biochemical and mechanical engineers have been working toward the goal of automating many of the chemical process that are currently done by hand—trained lab technicians using pipettes to determine the concentration of a chemical dissolved in a liquid, for example. Automating such tasks would not only make them less expensive, it could speed things up, potentially offering medical lab results in minutes rather than hours. To that end, engineers have been working toward building what they call a lab-on-a-chip. In this new effort, the research team has applied pneumatics to the problem.

Many chemical processes involve the movement of liquids. The researchers sought to use water pressure instead of electricity when building circuits for use on a potential lab-on-a-chip. They created a tiny sandwich comprising panes of glass as the bread and a sheet of silicone as the interior. But before making their sandwich, they etched the glass panes to allow a liquid to pass through and poked holes in the silicone sheet to connect the channels in the glass panes.

CNN boss Chris Licht out of a job amid backlash over Trump town hall

CNN boss Chris Licht is reportedly out of a job after suffering weeks’ worth of backlash internally for the network’s highly criticized town hall featuring former President Donald Trump.

“Warner Bros. Discovery will announce that Licht will be stepping down as chairman and CEO of CNN” within the next 48 hours.

Byers notes that the CNN Trump town hall combined with a less-than-flattering profile of Licht in The Atlantic led to “the near-total decimation of staff morale” and left Licht with few defenders at the network.

Southern Poverty Law Center, June 5, 2023

Documents Reveal ADF Requested Anti-Trans Research From American College of Pediatricians

Between Sept. 30 and Dec. 1, 2014, ADF sent letters to school boards in Minnesota, Rhode Island, Virginia and Wisconsin warning that they could be open to litigation for policies allowing transgender students to use appropriate facilities such as bathrooms and locker rooms. On Dec. 5, 2014, ADF sent an email with a similar message to school superintendents across the U.S. The letters and emails were signed by Jeremy D. Tedesco, then senior counsel at ADF, now vice president of corporate engagement, responsible for “efforts to combat corporate cancel culture.”

In a November 2014 blog post decrying a transgender-inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance in Houston, Texas, then-ADF president Alan Sears highlighted the letters and ADF’s campaign against LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination protections. Sears also repeated an anti-LGBTQ+ trope claiming that nondiscrimination protections put children at risk and the “safety implications” of LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination laws “are so obvious as to hardly need elaboration.”

The only problem for Sears and Tedesco was a lack of evidence to support their claims; and, to make the claims stick, someone needed to elaborate. A new trove of internal documents from the American College of Pediatricians suggests ADF turned to the group known to traffic in anti-LGBTQ+ “junk science” to “substantiate” many of its anti-LGBTQ+ talking points and provide medical justification for interpreting Title IX to exclude gender-identity protections. Together, the documents offer insight into how the groups manufactured legislative, legal and public relations challenges to medical science and public policy throughout the 2010s that have resulted in a rollback of abortion rights and nearly unprecedented restrictions on bodily autonomy in the U.S.

ACPeds did not respond to a emailed request for comment on Hatewatch’s findings.

Las Vegas Needs to Save Water. It Won’t Find It in Lawns.

As millions of newcomers have flocked to the Las Vegas Valley over the past 50 years, every level of government in the nation’s driest state has worked to ensure that water shortages don’t stop the growth.

Since 1999, southern Nevada has ripped out thousands of acres of turf from lawns, sports fields and roadway medians under the West’s most ambitious grass-removal program. These efforts helped halve the amount of water each resident consumed and freed up enough for Clark County to add nearly 1 million people.

Now, the valley is again looking to grass removal to continue growing without increasing its overall water use. In 2021, the Nevada Legislature passed a first-of-its-kind law mandating the elimination of “nonfunctional turf,” defined as grass that is decorative and rarely used. The Southern Nevada Water Authority promised this would do away with 3,900 acres of grass (roughly 3,000 football fields) within six years.

And it’s not enough.

One thing that’s always gotten me is the whole, “I’m defying this subpoena because executive privilege,” argument. That’s not how it works. You take it to court, get an injunction, and THEN you can argue executive privilege. If you can’t muster up an injunction based on your arguments about executive privilege, then you have no business defying the subpoena.

To the surprise of absolutely no one…

The Turkish lira tumbled to a fresh record low Wednesday, extending its slide against the U.S. dollar since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan started his third term.

The decline took the currency’s loss since the appointment of Erdogan’s new government to more than 8%. The currency has weakened by around 20% since the start of the year.

Analysts say Erdogan’s government propped up the lira in the run-up to Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections last month, using foreign currency reserves to keep the exchange rate under control.

One year in college at Fargo I went for a run when it was colder than 40 below (both in C and F) just because. So the big boss gets to get away with it, and the little boss gets a golden parachute to inflict his stupidity on someone else. And then they’ll just bring in a new little boss to do the same thing, but less blatantly stupid.

This ADF is also the same bunch of fuckwits that opposed vaccine mandates with the help of the so-called Frontline Doctors group or whatever their full name was, right?

One thing that’s always gotten me is the whole, “I’m defying this subpoena because executive privilege,” argument. That’s not how it works. You take it to court, get an injunction, and THEN you can argue executive privilege. If you can’t muster up an injunction based on your arguments about executive privilege, then you have no business defying the subpoena.

Byers notes that the CNN Trump town hall combined with a less-than-flattering profile of Licht in The Atlantic led to “the near-total decimation of staff morale” and left Licht with few defenders at the network.

The town hall itself should have been sufficient for immediate dismissal — especially given his efforts to defend what happened. And to force others to defend him publicly.

America’s mainstream media still wants to save the GOP — but that’s impossible

By RICH LOGIS

As a former Trump supporter and hardcore Republican, I’m here to say: Give up on rescuing the GOP. Kill it instead

salon.com

Why is the centrist and center-left press more preoccupied with saving the Republican Party than are the GOP itself and its politically traumatizing right-wing media?

Who do I mean by the centrist and center-left press? For instance, the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Atlantic, all organizations employ adult journalists and columnists. Hell, let’s throw in CNN.

Here are some recent examples, which should be considered in-kind contributions to the national Republican Party:

Washington Post: “Republican 2024 contenders are doing it all wrong”

Post again: “Vivek Ramaswamy knows the trick to winning Republican votes”

Here are two articles on former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, latest entrant in the 2024 race. They have undoubtedly endowed him with more national visibility than have his own media appearances and tough-guy, anti-Trump talk:

New York Times: “The Chris Christie Scenario”

Post: “Chris Christie is not in it to win it. His task is more important”

With no disrespect to Kaitlan Collins, I’ve yet to hear any cogent journalistic justification for CNN’s disastrous Trump town hall last month. But, hey, ratings: Maybe the method by which to save America from a second Trump term is to give him prime-time slots to lie, prevaricate and vent self-pity. I wonder whether CNN thought its mini-Waco might turn off enough Republican primary voters to reject Trump, in the interests of salvaging the party of Lincoln

North Dakota Gov Doug Burgum announces bid for White House today.

Probably considered a moderate GOP but he’s put out a bio video where one of the first things he says is a tired old dad joke about something like the only time we used the word woke was when we had to get up at 5 am to work the farm. Lots of typical GOP talk about taxes too high and too many regulations that hurt business, all spoken with beautiful video of unspoiled western North Dakota badlands. He also does a version of drill baby drill.

I can see how his bio appeals to NDans - local farm boy goes off to big Stanford but comes back and mortgages the family farm so he can create Great Plains SW and sell it to Microsoft to become a true billionaire. They loves them that come back to ND. Of course, he doesn’t stand much of a chance. He’s likely entering the race to raise his public profile and maybe get a cabinet spot in Energy or Agriculture.

Farmer-face Eating Leopard Party:

Video clips now making the rounds on social media show Republican Reps. Alina Garcia and Rick Roth speaking to those assembled at a Hialeah meeting with the Asociación de Ministros hispanos del Sur de La Florida (Hispanic Ministers Association of South Florida)

The lawmakers said the new law is meant “more as a political bill, not policy.” And it’s meant to keep undocumented migrants from coming to Florida — not to affect those who are already here.

But the bad publicity about the law is already having an effect, Roth said.

“I’m a farmer and the farmers are mad as hell,” said Roth, who grows vegetables, sugarcane, rice, sweet corn, celery, lettuce and radishes in Palm Beach County. “They (workers) are already starting to move to Georgia and other states.”

Just got off the phone with the bike store, last week a metal bar on the frame of my bike (Pedego Interceptor) broke. More of a nuisance than anything as it made a loud squeaking sound. Well, that run of my bike that I bought 3.5 years ago had issues, and I was out of warranty (they have since made the bike warranty 5 years), but….the frame is warranted for life. After much wrangling (my sister and brother in law own a franchise for Pedego), the company is giving me a new bike! Better yet, its a new gen model, the controller is better, the hub motor is 750 watt, it has hydraulic brakes, upgraded 7 speed shifter. Only bad thing is that I can’t choose the color, so, instead of mineral blue, it is black. I can live with that. I’ve been riding my old bike (Comfort Cruiser) which has 36 volt battery vs 52 volt on the other one, it works, just much less torque, no suspension seat, no pedal assist, no speedometer/odometer, and no built in light. I put over 9000 miles on the bike that broke and was looking to upgrade, thanks to metal fatigue it didn’t cost me anything. THIS is why when you buy a bike, you do it from a local brick and mortar store. And it helps when you are related to the owner…LOL

A month ago, my old BF in Portland sent an article about an old apartment building near downtown burning. Yesterday, I saw a different article about the same fire, and realized it’s the building he and I moved into when we moved to Portland from California in 1982. Confirmed by email.

Founder of “Protect Our Kids First” arrested for allegedly downloading child sex abuse material

Meanwhile, right-wingers continually accuse LGBTQ+ people, drag performers, and their allies of being “pedophiles” and “groomers.”

lgbtqnation.com

Michael Dolce, a 53-year-old lawyer known for representing child sexual abuse survivors, was recently arrested by FBI agents at his West Palm Beach, Florida home.

Dolce, who founded a group called Protect Our Kids First Inc., was allegedly laying in his bed and downloading sexually explicit images of children when agents broke down his front door.

According to an FBI affidavit, after Dolce’s March 15 arrest, agents found 1,997 images and five videos of child pornography on his computer. The images were of male and female children ages five to 12, including several of a prepubescent girl in a subfolder titled “Sweet Pedo Stars.” Dolce could receive a minimum of 20 years in prison if found guilty of possessing child pornography.

Experts: VDARE’s Real Estate Deals May Cost Group Nonprofit Status (Southern Poverty Law Center, May 24, 2023)

Let me see if I can muster up some sympathy for Peter Brimelow.

Nope. Sorry asshole.

The VDARE Foundation, a nonprofit based in New York that leading white nationalist activist Peter Brimelow founded in 2008, purchased the castle for $1.4 million in February 2020. The foundation serves as an umbrella organization for VDARE’s website, which it claims is a nonprofit journalistic outlet but consists of anti-immigrant and white nationalist posts. The hate group used donations for the purchase, according to court documents.

Public tax filings known as 990s show VDARE’s donations soared from $500,672 in 2018 to $4,258,309 in 2019. DonorsTrust, a nonprofit used as a “dark money ATM” for certain charities, donated $1.5 million to VDARE in 2019, DonorsTrust’s 990 shows. According to documents in the lawsuit docket, VDARE deeded the entirety of the castle property to two entities: a nonprofit called the Berkeley Castle Foundation and a for-profit limited liability company (LLC) called BBB. BBB paid VDARE $310,000 for its section of the property, according to the deed.

BCF paid VDARE $10 for the land it received in the deed. In that deed, the hate group cited West Virginia law which it claimed means “the transfer is exempt from the excise tax as a transfer between like nonprofit corporations having the same or similar purposes.” Another real estate deal called a deed of trust; security agreement and fixture filing, shows VDARE lent BCF $1,081,660.77 for the purchase of the castle property. Hatewatch obtained the document from the Morgan County, West Virginia, property search site.

That’s what I kept arguing to Mrs. Fish. If it had just been a random bear that happened to wander onto their property, the state probably has a case that the video evidence collected was incidental and not subject to the Fourth Amendment. Mrs. Fish repeated the common refrain, “If the homeowners didn’t want to be spied on, maybe they shouldn’t have been feeding bears! How else can the city figure out what’s going on?” Which, of course, belies the purpose of the Fourth Amendment, which is that the state needs to go through a process to be able to surveil private citizens, even if they are criming.

The battle between artists and artificial intelligence (AI) is heating up, and one online art platform thinks it has a solution.

Magma, a browser-based creative service, is launching tools that it claims will protect artists from AI copying their work. The tools block the use of artists’ names in prompts unless the artist has given explicit permission to do so.

“The AI art conversation goes beyond unethical practices for training models, and for many, treads into moral queries in how the artwork will be created in the future,” Damian Kaczmarek, CEO at Magma, told Lifewire in an email interview. “Ultimately, the divide itself is what allows generative AI to exist in the foreseeable future, and quite simply means that regardless of how strong the opposition to AI is, generative AI is here to stay in one fashion or another.”

Here’s one. We had this convo earlier.

These sorts of studies leave out all sorts of charitable giving which is not captured by looking at the reports of charities themselves.

When I put a $50 in the collection can at the market for the secular food bank in my county, that will get reported on their IRS Form 990, but it won’t be reported as a democratic socialist giving them the money. When I go to the village fire brigade for a cookout-fundraiser, the same applies (they are a charitable organisation and file the requisite paperwork, but not “from whom they got the money”).

Lots of Christians will claim putting money in a church’s collection plate amounts to charity, regardless of whether that church actually does charitable work or not, and the church likely doesn’t open their books for audits or file a Form 990.

From Kyle Griffin on Twitter responding to Ron DeSantis essentially ignoring a World War 2 veteran:

It’s worth reading the whole anecdote:

“Governor, I think there’s a World War II veteran back there!” an aide told DeSantis as the crowd swarmed.

DeSantis gave a nod in the veteran’s direction, flashed a thumbs-up, thanked him for his service and turned back to someone else waiting for a photo with him.

“The veteran would like a signature,” nudged Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds a few beats later. She passed along a piece of paper that read ‘RESERVED VIP’; DeSantis scribbled his name and then walked off, looking for the next voter.

“Governor, did you want to know there’s a World War II veteran?” another person asked 30 seconds later as DeSantis smiled for as many photos as he could.

“I know, I signed something for him!” DeSantis yelled back. He gave another thumbs-up and hustled away. https://

Turns out that the mush headed libtards we actually business people trying to make money, and hysterical bigots are an ungrateful minority that already have pure hardcore bigotry being pumped directly into their veins and don’t need more watered down crap. So the organizations go straight down the shitter, as the old audience hates what happened and the hysterical bigots have been programmed to hate the organization from the get-go. Nice going.

re: #200 Nerdy Fish

And since large numbers of Christians give 10% or more to their church on a consistent basis, of course charitable giving will look skewed towards conservatives.

Never mind that little of that 10% will actually help any of the people that the Christ wanted it help. < spit >

I believe in God.

I even believe in Jesus and what the rabbi tried to teach us.

I don’t believe in an afterlife.
And I damn sure don’t believe in the shit that the church has placed a priority on, starting with anything even remotely related to inheritance other games that the monogamist priests played.

There was a short story I read once about a Spanish town that when a new priest was assigned to the community, the little old church ladies brought an, of age, guy and gal (with their permission) to the first meeting with the priest and said, essentially, you will need this. Which way will you need? To be a success here, you can’t be outside the bounds but these people are willing to be with you. As long as you are monogamous while you are here, you will be accepted, either way.

Meanwhile the “Boycott Target” song is #44 on the Itunes top songs chart, sometimes the world can be shit and you still gotta slog through.

How important is iTunes in music ratings? Does forty-fourth on iTunes mean “popular with chuds?”

Ah… something just happened so that posting is working properly. Thanks to Charles for making that happen. Been a frustrating morning in this orange hellscape known as NYC metro area. The air is so thick with haze and smoke that it is otherworldly.

I remember the twilit noon skies during the last big northern California fires. Ghastly. You have my sympathy.

At least this time around everyone has n95 masks in the house.

You are correct, it’s not a big deal, e.g. it doesn’t appear in the Billboard top 100

The haze is thick enough to shut down the airports.
