Anyone remember this scene from Little Big Man (a tremendously underrated movie, IMHO), when Custer is deciding to go down into the Coulee. Here:

Little Big Man clip Custers insanity 3

I think in 100 years we might see something similar, but instead of Custer, it is a buffon-like Trump being told by an aide to “Hold onto those documents, Mr. President, because they belong to you”

I last visited almost 60 years ago. Little has changed from what my young mind remembered. Biggest change was the addition of the monument for the native Americans and the ‘markers’ for the known native dead. That and my understanding of what happened.

You have to understand, these people have convinced themselves and their parishioners that there is only one political issue that matters: Abortion. Ending abortion is their religious litmus test, and in that regard, Donald Trump is the holiest man ever to have lived; his existence in the White House at the right time gave them God’s Anointed Supreme Court, who struck down Roe and started bringing God back to America. They’re willing to brush aside any evidence to the contrary, because they are so focused on the end goal of saving all the unborn.

This case is going to come down to whether or not she values whatever Trump offered her to get her off the hook. If she is no longer convinced he can, or will, honor whatever deal they had in place, this case will go before a jury in a very strong state, and the state could win. If she believes he will give her an appointment on the 11th or SCOTUS, he will walk. It’s as simple as that.

I have been wondering, in the back of my mind, if the true motivation for Loose Cannon’s order invoking the special master wasn’t necessarily being in the tank for Trump, but because she is so out of her depth when it comes to matters of this nature, she wanted to essentially punt on the hard stuff.

That would be a sensible way for her to try to restore her reputation. Let’s hope she chooses to do that.

On the flip side, if she gets Trump off in some way that can’t be appealed to the 11th circuit, then burn the Federal judiciary to the ground (metaphorically). There is no reason to put up with institutions that have failed that badly.

Reflecting on Trump Employee 2’s comment about “the beautiful mind paper,” I am now mostly convinced that he kept the documents, not for any specific advantage they might confer, but because they reminded him of (in his mind) his best moments as President - memories of things he was proud of. I’m starting to doubt he had any intention of selling the documents, or using them as leverage. Reflecting on Trump Employee 2’s comment about “the beautiful mind paper,” I am now mostly convinced that he kept the documents, not for any specific advantage they might confer, but because they reminded him of (in his mind) his best moments as President - memories of things he was proud of. He wants to remember that heady feeling of being invincible, the most powerful man in the world, literally everybody hanging on every single word he says.

I.e., trophies. That rings true, especially with that bit where he was showing them off just to impress others, instead of making it pay per view.

That said, the damage to US national security is still immense, since security at Trump’s FL pesthole is nonexistent, and every interested foreign intelligence agency in the world has long since known everything that was in Trump’s stolen documents.

Whenever the case is actually tried in court.

There will be at least one Trumper on the jury.

a hung jury can be retried. My guess is that the case is strong enough to convict on some of the counts. Juries like to feel that they are in charge so they ignore some of the counts. It doesn’t matter the’re will be other cases. In my opinion, if he’s not convicted of what happened on Jan 6, we have failed. Keep the faith.

I think in 100 years we might see something similar, but instead of Custer, it is a buffon-like Trump being told by an aide to “Hold onto those documents, Mr. President, because they belong to you”

Custer impetuously broke up Jeb Stuart’s charge at Gettyburg, but hubris did him in.

People like to ask how we got to this, in 2023. Looking for causes. Maybe they go back to Reagan’s electoral victories, or Roe v. Wade.

re: #62 Nerdy Fish

This case is going to come down to whether or not she values whatever Trump offered her to get her off the hook. If she is no longer convinced he can, or will, honor whatever deal they had in place, this case will go before a jury in a very strong state, and the state could win. If she believes he will give her an appointment on the 11th or SCOTUS, he will walk. It’s as simple as that.

This is going to be one of the most complex cases ever tried, not only because of Trump but because of the sheer number of secret documents that must be dealt with in very specific fashion because of their classification. She has only overseen 4 trials and spent less than 15 hours acting as a judge in a trial. She is almost certain to make a critical error and not follow the detailed processes required. The prosecutors then appeal saying she is out of her depth.

A corrupt pardon from a corrupt GOP president (as if there could be any other kind of GOP president) only gets Trump off the hook for his Federal crimes.

The GA governor is a Republican, so a corrupt pardon there is also a possibility.

But I don’t have much of a problem with a possible Kemp pardon of Trump for his crimes in GA. Let the entire country see how corrupt the GOP is, and if the GOP can still win/steal elections after that, we’re done.

I am presuming/hoping that DOJ has a plan on how to deal with Cannon and Trump hijinks. They are supposedly experienced and knowledgeable. And they are the ones that made the decision to proceed.

The various tv talking heads, including some who might actually know what they are saying, have indicated that there is a long road ahead and that the DOJ should have multiple opportunities to appeal if the deem it necessary.

According to Joyce Vance, a former Federal DA for the Northern District of Alabama (in the 11th circuit) once a jury has been seated the DOJ’s ability to maneuver will be extremely limited.

Their reasoning? They only want to run if there is a large enough pool of “independents” (read: Repubs in denial) who don’t want to vote for Trump again but still want to vote Repub. So they’ll offer someone like Manchin who’s practically a Repub in all but name so that all those “independents” can pat themselves on the backs for “voting their conscience” or whatever excuse they make at the country club on Wednesday.

The conservative failure to understand consent in this context is absolute. Fundamentally, most of them think of women as appliances, and you don’t ask an appliance for consent before it is used for its intended purpose.

Since this conservative viewpoint is especially appalling (even for shitty conservative views), being accused of having it is a sure fire way to draw howls of outrage from conservatives.

It’s one of my regular talking points about Evangelical sexual attitudes. If someone is a complete asshat about LGBTQIA people, I just point out that Evangelicals also teach and believe that our bodies are not our own (1 Cor 6:19-20, a straight reading) and that a wife owes sex to her husband (1 Cor 7:1-6, but Evangelicals ignore that there’s mutuality about both husband and wife owing to each other due to Evangelical patriarchy). Then I point out that since they don’t believe in consent in sex and essentially still think marital rape is OK, I don’t see why any normal person would take anything they say seriously at all.

WRT Donald Trump…this would never happen, but can you imagine the consternation if a Mar-A-Lago spy was put on the stand in his case? You know, like a French spy? With a completely outrageous accent talking about how easy it was to penetrate MAL, access and take pictures of the documents? Again, this would never, ever happen because no other country is going to let their spy take the stand, but it’s a pleasant as hell fantasy.

re: #169 EPR-radar

That CEO is a fucking tick, wanting to make the big bucks by monetizing content and services provided to the platform for free by its users. Fuck him with a rusty chainsaw.

The unpaid volunteers are the real landed gentry, not the Libertarian oligarch who owns the site.

This isn’t his first meltdown over users either. During the Pizzagate nonsense, he edited all the posts critical of him in r/The_Donald (before that subreddit got banned for promoting violence).

He also once gave an award to r/Jailbait’s moderator (because underage girls and Libertarian). It was shut down only after CNN did a report on r/Jailbait.

When Gawker was about to publish an exposé about the real person who ran numerous underage and creepshot subreddits, Huffman banned the subreddits the day before. Gawker published it anyway, which caused much kvetching over doxxing people’s private information (for you know, publishing photographs of underage girls by Libertarians).

Much of Reddit is still inaccessible, though some of the popular subreddits came back (like r/Politics).

It’s one of those decisions that only makes sense to strong men, the ones who believe that the plebes love them and what they’re doing, and that the way to deal with any who stand against them is simply to portray them as “enemies of the people.”

Using that logic, he’s convincing himself that all he has to do is just put the decision in the hands of those plebes and they’ll do his job of banning those “enemies” for shutting down popular subreddits. When that fails, he’ll do it himself and claim “lots of people” have asked him to do it but wouldn’t speak publicly for fear of “retaliation.”

More on that “witness” from the GOP:

[Embedded content]

As of right now, the GQP “case” against the Bidens amounts to:

- Witnesses/”Whistleblowers” who refuse to be identified and have either “disappeared” or “died” without explanation
- Banking documents showing deposits which they cannot explain
- An FBI FD-1023 from an unidentified source that claims an unnamed exec asked for advice on how to buy influence with the Bidens and floats bribery but never says that an offer was made or money paid
- Tapes that are allegedly were recorded as “insurance” by this unnamed exec and given to his wife who has no mysteriously died and the tapes vanished

FFS, Whitewater had more substance to it than this shit-heap does, and that consisted of a single bastard offering unverifiable testimony in the hopes of a better prison sentence.

All these lies are intended to do is keep Republican voters voting for their party’s shyte sandwich of grasping power, comforting the comfortable and afflicting the needy, whilst confuse centrists and non-voters into being unable to tell what’s true.

For us, they’re lying, we know they’re lying, they know we know they’re lying, and yet they still lie.

This woman is like Lori Alexander (The Transformed Wife) but somehow worse. She reads like Poe’s Law but I assure you she’s legit.

No atheist or feminist goes after her for wanting to be a “traditional housewife.” They go after her for wanting to force every other woman to do the same, in accordance with her religion, and for being a TERF.

Opinion by Rich Lowry

Lowry’s entire argument could be condensed down a single sentence: “Do it to make the MAGAts happy.”

That’s the sum total of his argument, that the MAGAts are angry and bitter that the DOJ did not do their bidding by putting Hillary and the Bidens behind bars, so they deserve a consolation prize of seeing the God-Emperor walk free from some of the worst offenses of national security in recent memory.

The rest of it is the usual “Do it for the good of the country” BS that leans heavily upon the idea that Ford pardoning Nixon for Watergate somehow eased political tensions in America rather than just setting the stage for decades of blatant criming by Repubs that went unpunished because of fears of public (read: Repub) backlash.

We’re not stupid enough to think it really would make the MAGAts happy.

If Biden were to pardon Trump, TFG would immediately go on social media to claim this is proof that there was never any legitimate case, that the Dems now admit that…

Right, which only makes it more ridiculous that he suggests it be done after the election by either Biden or whichever Republican beats him in the primaries as a “consolation prize.” When Donny is squealing every waking moment that even investigating what he had for breakfast is a form of electoral interference, how hard is it to see that pardoning him after he’s lost another election bid would lead to accusations that the whole investigation had been a deliberate effort to tank his campaign?

re: #181 Belafon

The only other term would be unfair to dogs:

TERFs named themselves that. They then objected to it when actual feminists exposed them as a Heritage Foundation front group and started mocking them.

They then bellyached that the term was “politicised” by liberals.

They then chose the name “Gender Critical” for themselves as an alternative to TERF. Since that rebranding was obviously transparent, the mocking continued, so they claimed that term was being politicised.

AP here is caving to conservative grievance politics. TERF accurately describes what they are (and a lot of them are actually men).

I’d be okay with, after he’s convicted and serves a year or so, cutting a deal where if he fully and truthfully allocutes he gets his sentence commuted.
