Eh, maybe. I’m not an expert, but I did work on sonar equipment way back when as an engineer. Even when you design the equipment for certain signals and know what you’re looking for, it can be pretty hard to pick things out of background noise. We had some test data that, even after processing, looked like TV snow to me, and the sonar analyst they hauled in to consult was showing us tracks there (squint)… and there (squint harder, wtf). Those people are impressive but will tell you they’re not magicians.

I cross-trained to work on sonar hydrophones dipped from helicopters. On the bench, strong test signals sent to the hydrophone are barely able to pick out on the display, and I knew where the signal showed up and what it looked like.

Pretty sure there isn’t gonna be any bodies. At that depth, an implosion would instantly turn those poor devils into strawberry jam.

to be just a bit grisly, there would be at least some bones. yes, broken for sure, but not disintegrated or crushed.

Human bone crushes at about 11159 kg per square inch. This means we’d have to dive to about 35.5 km depth before bone crushes. This is three times as deep as the deepest point in our ocean.

The 40% of non-water non-gaseous minerals and tissues such as salts, proteins, fats and lipids are virtually impossible to compress similar to water.

An interesting tidbit here…

A company whose remotely operated vehicle (ROV) found the debris field near the Titanic reportedly said its focus now is on “the families of those on the Titan and for their tragic loss”.

Pelagic Research Services earlier confirmed to CNN that its ROV, which was the first to conduct a search for the missing OceanGate sub on the sea floor, found the debris field.

Sky News reported that a statement on the company’s website, which has since been deleted, reads:

PRS want to express our full gratitude for the incredible, coordinated rescue response of everyone involved in this search and rescue mission. Our focus right now is on the families of those on the Titan and for their tragic loss.

There has been no official statement regarding any deaths from the US Coast Guard or unified command involved in the search of the missing sub.

Sounds like PRS might’ve jumped the gun on announcing the deaths of the five crew onboard the Titan.

$500k is a moderate amount. If there’s a home as collateral, then that could explain this.

They don’t have to put up cash. They don’t have to front the money. They just need to show if they’re able to cobble together the money from their assets.

They only have to pay the bail if Santos skips his appearances.

The judge even goes so far as to say that the attorneys at issue may have committed a crime (!!!) by attempting to falsify court opinions. While the court cases cited had no signatures, which is a federal crime, the judge says the state could make a compelling argument that this conduct presents a similar fact pattern.

Couch-surfing like a bum college dropout’: Trump lawyer and Kari Lake launch Twitter feud

Former Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis is locked in a Twitter feud with failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake after Ellis accused her of “couch-surfing” at Mar-a-Lago.

Ellis shared a People Magazine article to Twitter that cited anonymous sources claiming Lake is angling to be Donald Trump’s running mate for 2024 and has become a frequent guest at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

“She’s couch-surfing at her friend’s house like a bum college dropout,” Ellis tweeted.

As Newsweek points out, Ellis has received the ire of Trump supporters after she made positive remarks about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Paul Hanken, an undersea expert, says rescuers found “five different major pieces of debris that told us that it was the remains of the Titan”.

The initial thing we found was the nose cone… then we found a large debris field. Within that large debris field, we found the front end bell of the pressure hull. That was the first indication that there was a catastrophic event.

Shortly after, we found a second smaller debris field within that debris field. We found the other end of the press hull that…basically comprised of the totality of that pressure chamber…

We will do our best to fully map out what’s down there.

“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost,” OceanGate said in a statement.

“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. The letter must identify and attach this Opinion and Order, a transcript of the hearing of June 8, 2023 and a copy of the April 25 Affirmation, including the fake “opinion” attributed to the recipient judge.

Safety regulations are written in blood, as the adage goes. It was the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic that led to the establishment of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention in 1914. The first version of that treaty was a direct response to the loss of the Titanic, though of course, WWI came along and pretty much scuppered it. But it was that disaster and the horrific loss of life that lit a fire under everyone’s asses and made them realize there needed to be greater regulations regarding lifeboats, safety equipment and continuous radio monitoring to prevent a repeat of that tragedy.

Yep, as pilots are fond of telling nervous passengers, “Don’t worry, we haven’t left one up there yet.”
(Arthur C. Clarke pointed out this could change with spaceflight, where a screwup could well leave you drifting away forever.)

after x hours of flight, you’re gonna be on the ground.
it would be good if that were at an airport…

“They were true explorers…”

Well, no. True explorers would have made safety a major priority. Explorers want to explore, not die.

The CEO of this company was a reckless fool who got several people killed with his hubris.

Not to mention that they weren’t exploring shit. They were tourists, in a super-expensive glass bottom boat ride that went horribly wrong.

One can imagine if there was a canned tour guide speech being given on the sub: “We are about to observe the wreck of the Titanic, which had serious design flaws and neglected to have basic safety features such as lifeboats sufficient for all of the passengers, leading to the tragic, unnecessary loss of many lives.”

Looks as if the great deluge is finally winding down. Since Monday afternoon, we have had 7.5 inches of rain here in Western NC. This pushes our annual total to just shy of 34 inches. This area averages 48 inches of precip per year, though the last four years we have been in the 60-72 range. Yes, the climate is changing.

One weird quirk is we set a new record for the lowest high temperature on the first day of summer - 68 degrees.

Even given that by 1912, documentation for sea voyages (especially on big commercial vessels like Titanic) was fairly well-collected, the number of actual casualties for that liner’s sinking has never been accurately determined. The figure of 1513 dead is usually cited as “official”, though most research (both contemporary and modern) seems to agree that that is probably a *minimum* number, and not an exact figure. Which (by this point) is unlikely to ever be precisely determined.

Pressure differential for that tank is puny compared to what the Titan experienced. Imagine that thing NOPEing in an environment 392 times atmospheric pressure, give or take. All the air in the submersible is instantly compressed into the size of a golf ball or so, and the pressure increase heats it up so much that it autoignites.

More than a bit naive, I’d say. This is starting to sound like the decapitation water park that was built without engineers by trial and error.

The dive was repeatedly delayed to fix a problem with the battery and the balancing weights. In total, the voyage took 10.5 hours.

The group was lucky and enjoyed an amazing view of the wreck, Loibl said, unlike visitors on other dives who only got to see a field of debris or in some cases nothing at all. Some customers lost nonrefundable payments after bad weather made descent impossible.

He described Rush as a tinkerer who tried to make do with what was available to carry out the dives, but in hindsight, he said, “it was a bit dubious.”

“I was a bit naive, looking back now,” Loibl said. “It was a kamikaze operation.”

Tourist sub customer calls his 2021 dive to the Titanic a ‘kamikaze operation’ (AP)

re: #141 Jay C

Even given that by 1912, documentation for sea voyages (especially on big commercial vessels like Titanic) was fairly well-collected, the number of actual casualties for that liner’s sinking has never been accurately determined. The figure of 1513 dead is usually cited as “official”, though most research (both contemporary and modern) seems to agree that that is probably a *minimum* number, and not an exact figure. Which (by this point) is unlikely to ever be precisely determined.

We can never really know how many stowaways there might have been, right?

That, plus it’s not like many of the survivors had ID on them. I’m sure at least one guy boarded the Titanic as Joseph Cooper and told the rescuers he was “Richard Smith”.

Being an asshole can get expensive.

New York CNN —

The Georgia autoshop owner who in 2022 paid one of this employees his final wage by dumping 91,500 oil-covered pennies in his driveway has been ordered by a federal judge to pay nearly $40,000 in additional back wages and damages to his employees, court records show.

Miles Walker, owner of A OK Walker Autoworks in Peachtree City, Georgia was ordered to pay back wages in the total amount of $19,967.09, plus liquidated damages in the amount of $19,967.09, the consent judgement shows.

Last year, the US Department of Labor filed a lawsuit against Walker for violating federal labor law, after he retaliated against a former employee who contacted the agency when he didn’t receive his final paycheck. He eventually paid the ex-employee, named Andreas Flaten, with roughly 90,000 pennies and a note expressing a short expletive.

‘Should have been fired’: Journalist apologizes for giving voice to RFK Jr.’s conspiracy theories

Well, better late than never…

rawstory.com

A prominent journalist is apologizing for her role 18 years ago in promoting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s falsehoods about vaccines.

Joan Walsh, as Salon magazine’s editor-in-chief, ran a 2005 article authored by the anti-vaxxer published under the headline “Deadly Immunity.” She now believes she “should have been fired” for it.

Kennedy, considered among the leading voices of the anti-vaccine movement, falsely claimed that childhood vaccines caused autism, an assertion that has been debunked by medical experts.

These days Kennedy is trafficking in baseless conspiracies about the dangers of wi-fi and “other forms of junk science (that) deserve no wide hearing,” Walsh writes in a mea culpa for The Nation.

Utter cluelessness?

Based on the discussion in the past couple of days, I know at least a few of us have been in submarines before. Someone sufficiently clueless might not have realized the difference between “Tourist submarine in Hawai’i that goes up to 100 feet below the surface” or “Disneyland submarine” and “Experimental submarine that goes down 3,000 feet under 300 atmospheres of pressure.”

But one would think a billionaire businessman would know enough to do some research.

It is the second such apology Walsh has publicly made over her role in publishing Kennedy’s falsehoods. In a 2011 article announcing that it was taking down Kennedy’s piece, Walsh said, “I regret we didn’t move on this more quickly, as evidence continued to emerge debunking the vaccines and autism link.”

“But continued revelations of the flaws and even fraud tainting the science behind the connection make taking down the story the right thing to do.”

OKX is a Seychelles cryptocurrency exchange. Obviously the National Weather Service has New York weather on the blockchain.

This is a somewhat complex explanation why these codes don’t seem to make sense

weather.gov

TL;DR, The World Metrological Organisation developed short codes plus binary computer strings in concert with the International Civil Aviation Organisation for what aircraft require. These codes can be added to by member states for local requirements (such as FIPS codes for National Weather Service radios for localised warning information).

Yep, as pilots are fond of telling nervous passengers, “Don’t worry, we haven’t left one up there yet.”
(Arthur C. Clarke pointed out this could change with spaceflight, where a screwup could well leave you drifting away forever.)

We used to note that pushing the envelope of duty hours, rest requirements, etc, often resulted in Class A accidents, many fatal.

Morbid comment especially when weather was involved, “Well, yeah, they died, but at least they were dead on-time.”
