That is easily the funniest podcast title I’ve seen in my life. Dollars to donuts that T-Rex came up with it, and he’s probably talking about the Greene-Bobert dustup.

Kentucky’s GOP governor hopeful took cash from officials he was investigating as AG

Kentucky’s GOP governor hopeful and Attorney General Daniel Cameron has been accused of taking cash from officials his office was investigating.

thedailybeast.com

The Daily Beast uncovered donations of $6,900 made to Cameron’s office in March and April from people who run an addiction recovery center that was being investigated by the state, it reported. The donations came at the end of an investigation by his office, which began in 2022, but it wasn’t until an open records request by the Beast that he recused himself from the investigation.

The Daily Beast reported that the open records request was sent to his office on May 17, and he announced he was recusing himself on May 19.

To make matters worse, Cameron attacked a local judge for doing the exact same thing at the same time. According to Cameron, an elected state judge took a $250 campaign donation from a lawyer that had a case before him.

And now look who got caught in the latest Supreme Court scandal.

‘Shady and corrupt’: Barrett real estate deal added to list of Supreme Court ethics scandals

alternet.org

Thursday reporting on a real estate deal made by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett months after her confirmation in 2020 was the latest evidence, said a government watchdog, that ethics reforms at the high court must either be imposed by the judiciary or Congress.

Days after ProPublica reported on Justice Samuel Alito’s previously undisclosed private jet trip—funded by a billionaire hedge fund owner whose business has been involved in numerous Supreme Court cases—CNN revealed that Barrett has had financial dealings with the Religious Liberty Initiative (RLI) at Notre Dame Law School.

A Note Dame professor who had just taken a leadership role at RLI purchased Barrett’s private home months after she was sworn in in October 2020.

The group, which advocates for religious freedom, was founded in 2020 and has filed numerous amicus briefs in cases related to the issue—related to questions surrounding abortion, public health precautions, and school prayer—since it was established. RLI has filed at least nine briefs with the court since the sale of Barrett’s home.

The newly reported conflict of interest is one of several in recent months that have brought renewed scrutiny to the fact that the Supreme Court justices are not required to abide by an ethics code, as other federal judges are.

The state senator wife of the Texas attorney general currently facing abuse and misconduct allegations — some linked to his alleged affair with a woman who was reportedly on a wealthy donor’s payroll — will not be allowed to vote in her husband’s upcoming impeachment trial.

Texas Sen. Angela Paxton, the longtime wife of Attorney General Ken Paxton, will be required to observe the impeachment trial against her husband, but she is barred from voting due to a conflict of interest, according to rules approved Wednesday by the state’s Republican-controlled senate.

A former Michigan gubernatorial candidate will plead guilty next month to misdemeanor charges in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol,

Former GOP candidate Ryan Kelley will plead guilty to Jan. 6 attacks charge

freep.com

Ryan Kelley, a real estate agent and conservative activist who sought to become governor of Michigan in 2022, will plead guilty next month to a misdemeanor charge stemming from his participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Earlier this year, a federal judge had ordered a trial beginning July 31 in a Washington district court, but an order filed on Kelley’s court docket Thursday indicated the court “hereby vacates the trial in this case” and instead has scheduled a plea agreement hearing for July 27. Plea agreement hearings typically are straightforward affairs — a magistrate judge will determine whether the defendant, in this case Kelley, understands what they are agreeing to and is competent to enter a guilty plea.

Kelley’s lawyer, Gary Springstead of Springstead, Bartish, Borgula and Lynch Law in Grand Rapids, said the former gubernatorial hopeful will plead guilty to a single misdemeanor charge of entering or remaining in a restricted building without lawful authority.

Federal prosecutors originally levied four charges against Kelley: the charge for entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; as well as disorderly and disruptive conduct, knowingly engaging in an act of physical violence against a person or property and willfully injuring property, according to a criminal complaint.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding. Article says she must be seated as a member but can’t vote due to conflict of interest. Are a two- thirds majority of the 31 members seated needed for impeachment? If she’s seated as a member, then 20 votes for impeachment wouldn’t be enough (assuming being seated makes the denominator 31).

Yep, as pilots are fond of telling nervous passengers, “Don’t worry, we haven’t left one up there yet.”
(Arthur C. Clarke pointed out this could change with spaceflight, where a screwup could well leave you drifting away forever.)

We used to note that pushing the envelope of duty hours, rest requirements, etc, often resulted in Class A accidents, many fatal.

Morbid comment especially when weather was involved, “Well, yeah, they died, but at least they were dead on-time.”

As expected, various moralizing virtue signalers have stepped forward to chide the online community for its allegedly callous attitude toward the loss of the OceanGate Titan.
Commentary: As those aboard the Titan submersible suffered, social media laughed

The exploitative coverage of the death and terror unfolding in real time has only been compounded by the public’s reaction on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram. Gleeful best describes the tenor of many posts — which include making fun of the video game controller used to pilot the Titan, laughing at the billionaires inside the submersible, jokes about the effects of lack of oxygen on the human psyche or substituting fart sounds for the knocking sounds that rescuers apparently heard underwater.

First, they apparently didn’t suffer much, if at all.
With millions of commenters, one is bound to find a few really extreme assholes, as the authors of this article obviously put a major effort into doing. What I have seen in the way of negative commentary consists mostly of some justified concern and frustration at the terrible waste and needless tragedy that this otherwise farcical episode represents. It is about, not just hubris, but a special kind of hubris born of privilege, arrogance and contempt for expertise. It is another warning sign of where the dude-bro libertarian mentality is taking us.
As for the deaths, I try to keep that in perspective. It is five human beings, each a unique individual and an incalculable loss. At the same time, though, 80-100 people, also human beings, will probably die by gunfire today in the US alone. Probably that many refugees will drown or die of thirst or violence trying to reach a safe haven. More than that will die of preventable disease because some fool gets off on lying about vaccines.

In the history of faith healers becoming popular after WW2, the man who blazed the trail was an Assembly of God pastor named Jack Coe.

Rev. Coe became a millionaire pastor back in the days when that wasn’t common at all (the Fifties).

Today, Christians of all faiths have either forgotten he existed (most Protestants), or elevate him as a hero whilst whitewashing his history (Evangelical Protestants).

His story was uncovered by a Miami Herald reporter who was a very devout Christian and wanted to see him in action when he came for a several-week tent revival in Miami. In the course of covering his event, he uncovered what was probably the largest religious fraud perpetrated on the USA. Rev. Coe retaliated against the Herald, even invoking Florida’s governor to help him and using thousands of people to intimidate a Florida court.

His story is a tale of fraud, Christian Oppression Olympics, harassment, the cries of “religious freedom” against secular governance, and ultimately schadenfreude at his untimely death. (29:41)

Houston Chronicle, today

Why Hotez is right not to debate RFK Jr. (Opinion)

Peter Hotez is in the headlines again. It isn’t his first rodeo, but I can’t imagine the past few days have been easy. A vaccine researcher and tropical diseases expert, he became a household name for his ability to communicate clearly during the COVID pandemic and for cutting through the noise — especially that of charlatans peddling conspiracies for personal gain.

Lately, that noise has been deafening. Over the weekend, podcaster Joe Rogan gave Democratic presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. three hours of airtime, during which RFK Jr. spewed his go-to anti-vaccine talking points and conspiracy theories. From touting the long-discredited allegation that vaccines cause autism to arguing that “wifi radiation” opens our blood-brain barrier, the list of uncontested, false claims RFK Jr. made on Rogan’s show is long. Hotez retweeted a detailed Vice article that called out the misinformation.

Rogan, who has made millions off of his podcast, often hosting provocateurs and selling a pseudointellectual spectacle, immediately saw an opportunity. “Peter, if you claim what RFKjr is saying is ‘misinformation’ I am offering you $100,000.00 to the charity of your choice if you’re willing to debate him on my show with no time limit,” he tweeted.
