Seriously, even coffee has its issues.

There was a report floating around about how completely disgusting pig farms are and the slaughtering practices are barbaric enough, but then the story about how farmers feed entrails and fecal matter to other pigs as a means of disease control left me knowing that not digging on swine was the right move.

What DeSantis is doing in Florida with prosecutors is exactly what Trump tried doing with electors.

Think about it. DeSantis is overriding the will of the electorate and substituting his own corrupt and incompetent goons over the people that were voted into office.

The sad reality is there isn’t likely a single Joe Biden policy that adversely affected Craig Robertson. It’s almost a certainty that many of the policies and bills that Biden signed actually benefitted Craig. Craig lost his life because Joe Biden has a “D” after his name and that drove Craig batshit crazy. Good riddance. Another MAGA voter is worm dirt.

Anyone looking for a rabbit hole collection of custom scientific and workplace calculators?

Due to my age and it being summertime with ~55% humidity, I was looking for a wet bulb temperature calculator to figure outdoor conditions while doing some ongoing landscaping. Current project is 4 CY of mulch. Apparently heat index uses shade temperature as a factor and my landscape work isn’t in the shade. Thus my interest in wet bulb temperature which in turn, is going to become more of a factor in determining future human migration.

Anyway, Omnicalculator is based out of Kraków, Poland. Before using their wet bulb calculator, I read their privacy policy. It appeared to not violate any of my red lines. They have hundreds of custom calculators on site, some showing cite documentation, e.g Biological (allele frequency to dog BMI), chemical, construction, math, physics, statistics, photo and video, as well as Drone Flight Time (Ukraine might be using this one), etc.

But I digress:

No lie too crazy that this man can pull out of his ass that his followers won’t believe.

They don’t believe anything, they’re nihilists with a vague sense to words must be said to excuse their awful things they want. Fascism…for fascists…is less about a specific belief than what the belief permits. Nazism gave Germans a framework in which they were Awesome People betrayed by easy-to-hurt weirdos and foreigners, not Rubes Like Everyone Else gathering-around a nationalist agenda and asshole Kaiser that fucked them over. Most other fascists do something similar…to follow is to be not just given catharsis and treats, but to be told that this was always your patrimony.

Blood, sugar, and porn rather than bread and circuses.

What Trump supporters will do is accept any pretext from an authority figure that vaguely resembles a culturally-acceptable reason that they can do what they want…

(with the follow-up that they will simply find new authorities when their treats aren’t distributed fast enough)

…which is why they’re standing with their man rather than spinning off to support reactionaries that can’t embody the appetites, the license to do things and have no consequences, that they crave.

What I’m hoping for on Friday is some small measure of justice, finally, in response to Trump’s endless provocations. A stringent protective order with stiff and automatic penalties for any violations would be a good start, but it would have to include an ironclad provision to ensure no further violations after the first (inevitable) violation.

This is why I’m obsessed with asserting that this is about cruelty, not stupidity.

This pattern works, it touches base with existing heuristics that are used to explain away suffering—and even to enjoy suffering through schadenfreude—and it’s a mistake to view this all as some kind of stumbling comedy.

Every fascist government does the same thing—steal as much shit as possible while claiming it was a necessary step to utopia, for as long as possible even as it fails to produce the structural outcomes promised. This process is buoyed by mythologizing the theft as justice and by finding an endless series of scapegoats to publicly butcher so the fascist audience can expel their frustration. Correcting their rhetoric—which constantly mutates and dwells in the realm of bullshit, beyond “sincere” or “insincere”—is wasted effort.

The mistake people keep making is imagining that it’s some kind of intellectual error on the part of the fascist, when in fact the fascist is making an active choice to destroy meaning and substitute appetite.

Note that after the fact fascists (like active ones, not just people stuck in the fascist nation) themselves performatively declare themselves to have been stupid—or beguiled, or preoccupied with other things— as a way of evading consequences.

What they would prefer not discussed is that in their “stupefaction” they still made choices, and those choices both indulged themselves and harmed others.

No one at said paper has reached out to me or other photographers to inform us of this. I understand that I am not an employee, but I’m kind of pissed off about not being contacted about this because if I had known I could’ve made other arrangements for other possible clients. Genes play a big role. His father died in his early 90s, and his mom in her early 80s.

I thought this might be the reason Donald wanted to murder the Central Park 5, but his mother was severely injured by a mugger after he ran that ad.

As she grew older, Trump suffered from severe osteoporosis.[4] On October 31, 1991, at 79, she was mugged while shopping on Union Turnpike near her home. She resisted the mugger’s attempt to steal her purse, which contained $14, and was then knocked to the ground and beaten.[23] She sustained broken ribs, facial bruises, several fractures, a brain hemorrhage, and permanent damage to her sight and hearing.

They probably have their minds focused on the financial problems that led to not being able to afford freelancers anymore. Newspapers have been in trouble for a years now.

Exclusive: A veteran FBI agent told Congress that investigations into Giuliani and other Trump allies were ‘suppressed’

A veteran FBI counterintelligence agent says his supervisor told him to stop investigating Rudy Giuliani and to cut off contact with any sources who reported on corruption by associates of former President Donald Trump, according to a whistleblower complaint obtained by Insider.

The agent, who served 14 years as a special agent for the bureau, including a long stint in Russia-focussed counter-intelligence, claims in a 22-page statement that his bosses interfered with his work in “a highly suspicious suppression of investigations and intelligence-gathering” aimed at protecting “certain politically active figures and possibly also FBI agents” who were connected to Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs.

Those figures, the statement claims, explicitly included “anyone in the [Trump] White House and any former or current associates of President Trump.”

The statement, which was prepared for staffers of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was apparently leaked and posted in mid-July to a Substack newsletter. Insider has independently obtained a copy of the complaint and verified its authenticity, but has not corroborated all of its claims.

You can count on Gym Neighbors and Comer Pyle to suppress this.

Here’s one good argument against anyone trying the “GOP base voters are decent people that are just being lied to by their media” excuse:

Republican candidates run on performative cruelty, like Abbott’s stunt with the saw blades at the border. In order for that to be politically effective, it has to run, as cruelty, in right wing media, which it does.

Cruelty as entertainment is upstream of nearly all right wing shit.

This is the story of us trying to get my son out of Texas to the University of Oklahoma.

This morning, I went to air his tires up and noticed a a spot on his tire where he had rubbed against the curb too often. After going to two places to find a tire, Discount tire said they had two, and that I needed a new rim (I did). But then they didn’t have the tire, but they said the tire was structurally sound.

Then, as we’re about to get on the road, I noticed his registration sticker was out. So we got an inspection and a tag.

Finally, on the road. Except…the guy in front of us us driving slow and irratic on the two lane part of Rockwall. We get around him at Farmersville.

The route we are taking allows us to avoid driving through most of North Dallas. We would have jumped on St. Highway 82 at Bells, Tx, and picked up 35 at Sherman. That was, until we came up on a wreck in Farmersville, forcing us on 380, which means we will have to get on I75 in McKinney, which is definitely still the Metroplex.

IMO the intersection between cruelty and stupidity in politics is that willful stupidity is used to justify/excuse/explain cruelty.

a lot of folks are still coming around to accepting that it is intentional cruelty and not benign stupidity / idiocy.

because of what it means.
it’s easier to ‘realize’ that the country has been dumbed down and half of it is just ‘stupid’.

it’s harder to accept that north of 40% (or so) of the country are in fact facist in action and thought and association if not in party name.

We make a big deal about this or that bit of violence, and indeed the frothing right-wing loves to play the crime card in every election.

Yet we, collective, are capable of, and guilty of, crimes of such great magnitude that the only way we can deal with them is simply to wait until time takes memory.

Quell any riots = kill innocent protesters to gain control over the country. This is fascism.

It’s worth clicking through to the underlying Right Wing Watch report. Eastman’s ‘justification’ for his crap is the lowest kind of projection — the sort of idiocy you’d find from any moron at a Trump rally.

Keith Richards has a half-life longer than plutonium.

Which isotope of plutonium? They all have shortish half-lives which is why no native sources of plutonium are known to exist in any quantity in ore bodies (there may be a few atoms of native Pu-239 resulting from neutron capture of a U-238 nucleus). There’s Xe-124 whose half-life is about 18 sextillion years (1.8 x 10^22 years), that might better fit Keef’s life expectancy. After that there’s always proton decay, maybe.

Eastman needs to not just lose his law license but to spend a good number of years in Club Fed. Double digits might suffice, although I’d prefer triple.

In the indictment document, Jeffrey Clark told Patsy Boloney that they were going to invoke the Insurrection Act to call out the actual US military to put down the riots. Now, in the event, that order may have been disobeyed; was it Milley or somebody that said they had no intention of supporting the coup? But it was definitely on the insurrectionists’ radar.

A friend returned last Friday from a 16 day trip to central Europe and it appears that everyone in her tour group came down with COVID during the last few days of the tour. She is still having problems breathing and remains very congested, though she thinks her condition is improving. Maybe COVID is now no worse than the flu, but she thinks that this may be her last visit outside the United States. We will have to wait and see how the post-pandemic world settles down.

In fact, one of the main hopes of the coup plotters was for the Jan 6 mob to lead to enough civil disorder that Trump “would have no choice” but to call out the troops to “restore order”. The main reason this was averted was the wisdom of anti-Trump activists in not showing up for counter-demonstrations on Jan 6.

It is not “no worse than the flu.” That is propaganda which endlessly pounded by right-wingers and antivaxxers which has seeped into public discourse.

It is just as dangerous as it was before; we’ve only gotten better at treating the acute symptoms.

Tech recruiter sent me this today.

How are you? Hope your August is going well thus far. I wanted to connect immediately about a high-impact Senior/Lead JavaScript position at a fast-growing product marketplace called publicsq.com

They provide a very specialized service- they connect small and medium-sized business that are Pro-American, Pro-Family Values, and Pro-Freedom with like-minded consumers. Their core values resonate extremely well with their business channel partners, and create a vibrant community of consumers and businesses that believe in our Freedom, Republic, and Constitution.

They are one of the fastest growing apps on the App Store/Google Play and just went IPO! Due to their growth, they seek a Principal JavaScript Engineer- you will build their core marketplace app, and leveraging tools like React, GraphQL, Node, and many other cutting edge tools!

They plan on doubling in size this year alone, and have a great base/bonus/benefits package. Full remote as well .They need someone who shares their same values- that is the most critical piece for them. Interviews happening soon- please let me know the best time/number to connect!

I replied back:

They sound like fascists to me. Hard pass.

Understood- certainly not for everyone. I will have plenty of other roles that are less political, or at least have a different lens. Would be happy to consider you for those as well.

I replied again.

Honestly, I wouldn’t do business with someone who would ever be associated with people like that.

I absolutely agree. If that recruiter knew that this company they were recruiting for was a “freedom loving” (read: fascist) company, and deliberately chose to work with them, they would not only not get my business, but all of my work contacts would hear that they and their firm should be avoided.
