Caribbean Vibes: Alex Cuba, Tiny Desk Concert

Music • Views: 12,627

If you don’t speak Spanish, YouTube’s closed captions do a pretty good job of translating the excellent lyrics.

This Latinx Heritage Month Tiny Desk is celebrating with an ‘El Tiny’ takeover, featuring a wide array of artists from all corners of Latinidad.

Felix Contreras | October 4, 2023
Alex Cuba starts his turn behind the Tiny Desk with the barest of musical essentials: a percussive guitar rhythm, the soft scratch of a güiro and a miniature choir. “Ciudad Hembra (La Habana),” a lament for his hometown, sets a deliberate slow burn for this performance.

Alex Cuba’s superpower is his undeniable charm as he weaves evocative imagery into musical arrangements that not only call to mind his native Cuba but anywhere an acoustic guitar and engaging voice command attention. “De Camino” offers a good case in point. Propelled by bass, drums and congas, the deeply personal love song is full of celebration — Cuba’s guitar and light hand percussion remind us that we are, in fact, in the Caribbean.

“Chekere” is named for the Afro-Cuban instrument made of a dried-out gourd covered by beads used in all types of Cuban music. The song’s soft beginning evolves into a percussion-inspired explosion before Alex Cuba segues into a delicate love song dedicated to his wife, “Sarah.”

Lake Lanier: The History of a Black Town, Enduring Racism, and Mysterious Deaths
This op-ed explains the deadly history of Georgia’s Lake Lanier.
teenvogue.com

There is another Greenwood, Rosewood, Seneca Village, etc. more tears

Lake Lanier is a man-made, 38,000-acre lake that attracts about 10 million visitors every year, bringing in around $5 billion annually to North Georgia’s economy. The lake is located in the affluent Forsyth County, which has the highest median income in metro-Atlanta. This fact is especially interesting considering that the body of water covers what was once a thriving Black community called Oscarville. That community, formed during the late 1800s, was filled with successful farmers, carpenters, and blacksmiths — until Oscarville’s more than 1,000 residents were violently forced out by white Forsyth County residents.

Michael Gardner wanted to start his nephew’s wedding with a bang.

His plan involved shooting a blank from a revolver into the air to signal to the roughly 200 people gathered on Saturday that the outdoor ceremony, which he was officiating, was about to begin. But when Gardner cocked back the hammer of the gun, it slipped, and the homemade blank that he had used, which was closed off with glue, fired from the Pietta 1860 snub-nose revolver that he had borrowed, he said.

As the bride was about to walk down the aisle, what was supposed to be a day of love in Denton, Neb., turned into one of unexpected panic: The wedding officiant accidentally shot his 12-year-old grandson in the shoulder.

Despite the shooting, Gardner finished officiating the wedding.

In an interview with The Washington Post on Wednesday, Gardner said he regretted using a homemade blank; it was the first time he had done so. He acknowledged that the gun did not belong to him and that he had not used the firearm before it was accidentally discharged.

“It’s hard knowing you hurt somebody that you love more than life,” said Gardner, 62, of Odessa, Tex. “Common sense would tell you that you don’t carry a gun around with a blank in it, and that it would do you no good. But the gun was part of the wedding, and it was going to be used to summon the bride.”

The 12-year-old boy was taken to Children’s Hospital about an hour away in Omaha, and his injuries aren’t life-threatening, said Ben Houchin, chief deputy of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska.

Exclusive: US will transfer weapons seized from Iran to Ukraine

A total haul of over 1.6 million rounds of ammo, thousands of fuses for RPG, thousands of pounds of propellant for RPG, over 5000 assault rifles, over 70 anti-tank guided missiles, and almost 200 rocket launchers could be transferred to the Ukraine effort through civil forfeiture laws.

So, within 3 days of the GOP taking out $6 billion in Ukraine aid, the Biden admin transfers weapons that likely represent a sizable fraction of that. So smart.

worse than that…I got a desire to go to Arby’s!

My wife and I went to Arby’s in Sidney yesterday after getting our shots.

They’re running a “big game burger” special (mixture of beef, venison, and elk). I said “what the heck” and tried that. My wife went with the standard double roast beef.

We wound up switching sandwiches. I did not care for the big game burger, but she liked it just fine.

And of course, anyone knowledgeable would tell you that a blank round isn’t harmless, especially if fired close to a person. And a homemade one, which could potentially send the material used to seal the round out the barrel, could be especially dangerous.

Guns aren’t fucking toys. I wish people could understand that.

When we got our newest shots, the pharmacist filled out our cards but said they’re being discontinued. Going to keep them anyway to remember the dates, and maybe show my (hopefully someday) grandkids for a bit of nostalgia. “Oh yes, we survived the first apocalyptic plague with these funky little low-tech paper cards. They didn’t come up with the updatable micro tracking chips till the second one…”
