Trump co-defendants make yet another effort to move cases out of Georgia
A former Justice Department official and three Georgia Republicans charged alongside Donald Trump in Georgia have appealed court rulings keeping their criminal cases in Fulton County court.
Former state GOP head David Shafer, state Sen. Shawn Still and Cathy Latham, the former chairwoman of the Coffee County GOP, asked the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday to transfer their cases from state to federal court, and former assistant U.S. attorney general Jeffrey Clark asked for a pause in his criminal case while his appeal moves through court, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
U.S. District Court Judge Steve Jones ruled a week earlier that all four failed to meet the burden to move their cases under the federal removal statute after their lawyers argued in court they had been acting as federal officials when they met Dec. 14, 2020, to proclaim Donald Trump had won the election in Georgia.
Clark’s lawyer argued in a separate hearing that he had been acting as a Justice Department official when he tried to help the former president overturn his election loss in the state.
Five of the 19 Fulton County defendants, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, have sought to move their cases to federal court, where juries might be drawn from a slightly more conservative pool, but none of them have been successful.

Only clarification I’d make to the second line is that it’s removal from Georgia state court to federal court in Georgia. Georgia state law still applies, but procedurally federal courts are a bit easier for the defendants in this case.
Prosecutors are still able to show that none of these fuckers were operating under color of authority or privilege or that their role in US government allowed them to interfere in the election certification process.

Ken Paxton to file criminal complaints against Texas House impeachment managers
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Monday he plans to file criminal complaints against the group of state representatives who led the impeachment against him for releasing his personal information.
“The impeachment managers clearly have a desire to threaten me with harm when they released this information last week,” he said in a statement. “I’m imploring their local prosecutors in each individual district to investigate the criminal offenses that have been committed.”
The 12 House representatives being targeted by Paxton led the impeachment trial in the Senate after the House overwhelmingly voted to impeach Paxton in May. Last month the Senate acquitted Paxton of 16 articles of impeachment that alleged corruption and bribery.
In a statement Monday, Paxton accused the House impeachment managers of violating a new state law with an Oct. 2 release of documents related to the case. The new legislation cited by Paxton prohibits posting an individual’s personal information such as a home address or telephone number with the intent to cause harm to that individual or their family.
Paxton said he plans to file the criminal complaints in each of the eight counties represented by the dozen impeachment managers. It is not clear which address is in question. Several of Paxton’s addresses are available through already-published public records, often found online from any location through local municipalities’ appraisal district databases.
House lawyer Rusty Hardin, who prosecuted Paxton, said Monday that the documents released last week contained the same information that was included in other documents that had already been filed or were admitted into the impeachment trial without objection.
He also said that the information about Paxton’s residence is available through public records, and has been for years. Further, he said the release of documents was not conducted with an intent to cause harm to Paxton as he alleged — it was “simply a repeat of public information to anyone that wants to look into it.”
If Paxton makes good on his pledge to file the criminal complaints, Hardin said his Houston law firm will consider countering with a criminal complaint against Paxton for making a false report to police.
“This is the exact kind of bullying, uninformed vengeful act that we predicted if the attorney general was not impeached,” Hardin said. “He’s trying to misuse the criminal justice system to cower and punish people who sought to impeach him under the law. It’s just one more outrageous, vengeful act by a man who has no business being attorney general.”

That’s why I keep going back to the 1973 war as a parallel. Israeli leadership at that time was experienced, led by Golda Meir and General Moshe Dayan. They knew what it took to keep Israel safe, and they failed, because they didn’t want to preempt another invasion, just as they did with the Six Day War.

This is the tragedy. I’m Jewish, but I have never thought that the idea of any religious state was tenable. I’ve argued countless times with my relatives about this, and I often asked how they’d like to live in a Christian nation in which they could never have full citizenship. For people like me who grew up in America, in which diversity and inclusion are core principles, the idea that there could ever be a country devoted to one single religion or ethnicity was always anathema to my values.
So I’m again finding myself isolated on this conflict. I don’t side with the terrorists, but blind allegiance to Israel’s fascist government will never sit right with me.

My understanding of Israeli nuclear doctrine is that they are strategically ambiguous, but they retain the Sampson Option - their version of MAD. If attacked with WMD, they will respond with nukes in kind (though they never admit to having an arsenal).
Everyone in the region figures them to have between 150-500 weapons, likely carried on aircraft, although they might have ballistic missile warheads.
Most of this is conjecture, and knowledge gleaned from Vanunu.
I don’t see the IDF using nukes against Gaza, especially because the fallout will fall on Israeli territory downwind - it’d be almost impossible not to hit Israelis with the damage too given the size of Gaza and proximity to Israeli territory and population centers.

When I was due for reenlistment in the Navy in 1971 one of the inducements I was offered was to be trained for solo HALO deployment of the underwater-delivered mine (supposedly 55 pounds) that was made from the Davy Crockett warhead. I declined, even though the sweetener on the deal was to also place me on the Apollo 13 splashdown crew. No more trips to Vietnam for me, whatever the inducements!

The Lucky Dragon No. 5 is now on display in a museum in Japan. Weirdly enough, for a radioactive disaster intense enough to actually kill someone (the boat’s radio operator), a number of the original crew attended the museum opening about twenty years after the event.
If you go to Yumenoshima in Tokyo on Google Maps you can take a Streetview tour of the museum and see the boat in place there. The engine is, for some reason, displayed outside under a canopy (I think it’s because the original hull was repurposed and re-used for other things and it may have been re-engined at some time).

Hamas was created as a counter to Hezbollah, funded mostly by the Saudis to balance the Jordanians in political influence in the region. Hezbollah’s operational area is based on the refugee camps in southern Jordan, not Gaza which is a Hamas fief.
I’ve seen reporting that Hamas was encouraged by the Israeli government back in the 1980s for similar reasons with the hope that they’d fight Hezbollah and Arafat’s Fatah (which used to be the Israeli government’s bete noire). It’s so long ago it’s difficult to really know who did what back then since it’s unlikely anyone wrote down what they were doing. It wouldn’t be the last time that a supposedly-compliant tool turned in the hand of its wielder though.
The Iranians have Islamic Jihad in the West Bank under their thumb and they have nothing to do with Hamas especially. They do support Hezbollah, at least financially. Nobody really cares what the Palestinian Authority says or does about this mess, of course.

Utah was the recipient of a lot of the fallout from various above-ground tests in the Nevada Proving Grounds. Isotopes such as strontium-90 were certainly detectable in ground soil samples taken in southern Utah in the early 2000s. I don’t know of any more recent tests and reports. Saying that science is very VERY good at detecting and categorising radioactive materials, even in minute amounts. A lot of Government money was put into the problem starting in late 1945, I can’t think why. /s

I taught in a variety of positions in a small private college in the Wabash region. It had a hiking path down to an old defunct quarry that I used to run a couple of times a week. One time I was doing pretty well in my pace when I had this weird peripheral sight and just stopped and backed up. Ken Paxton to file criminal complaints against Texas House impeachment managers
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Monday he plans to file criminal complaints against the group of state representatives who led the impeachment against him for releasing his personal information.
“The impeachment managers clearly have a desire to threaten me with harm when they released this information last week,” he said in a statement. “I’m imploring their local prosecutors in each individual district to investigate the criminal offenses that have been committed.”
The 12 House representatives being targeted by Paxton led the impeachment trial in the Senate after the House overwhelmingly voted to impeach Paxton in May. Last month the Senate acquitted Paxton of 16 articles of impeachment that alleged corruption and bribery.
In a statement Monday, Paxton accused the House impeachment managers of violating a new state law with an Oct. 2 release of documents related to the case. The new legislation cited by Paxton prohibits posting an individual’s personal information such as a home address or telephone number with the intent to cause harm to that individual or their family.
Paxton said he plans to file the criminal complaints in each of the eight counties represented by the dozen impeachment managers. It is not clear which address is in question. Several of Paxton’s addresses are available through already-published public records, often found online from any location through local municipalities’ appraisal district databases.
House lawyer Rusty Hardin, who prosecuted Paxton, said Monday that the documents released last week contained the same information that was included in other documents that had already been filed or were admitted into the impeachment trial without objection.
He also said that the information about Paxton’s residence is available through public records, and has been for years. Further, he said the release of documents was not conducted with an intent to cause harm to Paxton as he alleged — it was “simply a repeat of public information to anyone that wants to look into it.”
If Paxton makes good on his pledge to file the criminal complaints, Hardin said his Houston law firm will consider countering with a criminal complaint against Paxton for making a false report to police.
“This is the exact kind of bullying, uninformed vengeful act that we predicted if the attorney general was not impeached,” Hardin said. “He’s trying to misuse the criminal justice system to cower and punish people who sought to impeach him under the law. It’s just one more outrageous, vengeful act by a man who has no business being attorney general.”

Nope, the scientists already knew there would be radioactive isotopes from the explosion and they’d be spread widely due to wind. They didn’t think the health effects of fallout would be particularly damaging and generally they were right. This was a world of cars that burned tetra-ethyl lead straight out the exhaust pipe, cigarette smoking was universal and there were a lot of things that would poison and kill you already.
There’s a conspiracy-adjacent “theory” that radioactive contamination was promoted as being super-dangerous in the early 1950s by a research scientist (Miller? I can’t recall immediately) who was working with fruit flies, mutating them with various doses or radiation. He got the idea that if he convinced the world that nuclear radiation was incredibly dangerous that all countries would stop building nuclear weapons so his research results were tweaked and used as proof of how dangerous radioactive fallout would be.
The result was not to stop bombs being built but it put a serious crimp on the development of civilian power reactors instead, resulting in several more decades of coal-burning power stations and millions of subsequent deaths due to air pollution and acid rain.

The funds were transferred from South Korea to Qatar and can only be used for humanitarian purposes. According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, not one dollar of this money has yet been spent.
This false attack against the Biden administration comes after months of many House Republicans repeatedly siding with Vladimir Putin in his illegal war against Ukraine. (As if it needs to be said, Ukraine is our ally and Russia is our enemy—it’s really not that complicated.)

Ummm, no. Radiation is not something most people really understand or can easily grasp. There are a lot of fanciful made-up stories and outright lies about its effects and people believe them for some reason, maybe because it’s scary? I say once again, Godzilla movies are not real.
For a nuclear explosion or accident the most worrisome release in the fallout is Iodine-131. It lasts long enough to be noticeable with a half-life of just over eight days, it’s a common product of the so-called “M-curve” of fission isotopes (basically, isotopes with atomic numbers close to half that of a U-235 atom) and it collects in the human thyroid. We know now how to treat that and the longer-term solution to I-131 fallout is cheese. Really.
A lot of I-131 intake in humans after the Tchernobyl disasters was due to drinking milk from cows that had taken up noticeable amounts of I-131 from eating grass. If the milk had been sequestered, made into cheese and left to mature for a couple of months before consumption nearly all of the I-131 would have decayed and it would not have concentrated in the thyroid. Since the Soviet authorities didn’t take this simple step about forty people died from preventable thyroid cancers. Yes, forty people, not forty thousand people.

On a YouTube video I was watching a few days ago, I learned that the US detonated a nuclear explosion below ground in western Colorado in 1973 in an attempt to release natural gas and oil. Sort of an early version of fracking. It seems that the test was successful in that gas and oil were extracted, however, it was useless because it was (wait for it) radioactive. A couple more tests were performed before the idea was abandoned.
Apparently, the ground around the test site does not exhibit higher than normal levels of radioactivity. Perhaps because it was deep and the explosion was relatively small, about 40 kT?

Former publicist for Kanye West-turned Trump co-defendant Trevian Kutti claimed Monday she will be Donald Trump’s next press secretary in a now-deleted social media post, The Messenger reported.
“I look forward to redeeming Black women in politics by becoming Press Secretary to the 47th President of the United States @realDonaldTrump,” Kutti wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In a similar post on Instagram, Kutti added the caption, “I’m protected.” That post has also since been deleted.
Kutti has pleaded not guilty to felony charges in Georgia in connection to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. The case is part of the 41-count Fulton County grand jury indictment against Trump and 18 other co-defendants.
Experts say her comments could make it difficult for Kutti to strike a plea deal with prosecutors.
“It certainly doesn’t help her case if she testifies,” said Georgia trial lawyer and former RICO prosecutor Chris Timmons. “It adds bias if you think you’re going to get a position in the Trump administration.”
“The other thing is I wouldn’t offer her a deal if she claims she’s going to be press secretary… that’s the biggest thing there,” he said, adding that for Trump “it could be witness tampering, but you’d have to prove it’s an exchange for testimony.”
