A Beautiful Tiny Desk Concert by Polish Composer Hania Rani

Music • Views: 14,196

Hania Rani makes beautiful music that’s haunted, yet enchanted. The Polish pianist and composer blurs the lines of ambient, classical and house — submerged beats pulse under ripples of piano, synths and her delicate voice. She regularly performs in concert halls across Europe, but during an American tour she brought the cinematic, yet intimate songs of her album Ghosts to the Tiny Desk.

Rani is conservatory trained, but like so many post-classical artists working right now, brings her own influences to centuries-old tradition. The way her fingers chromatically surge in a cascade of color suggest the later compositions of Mozart — somehow lush and sublime in their tension, on the brink of something different. But there’s also a restlessness in how Rani, accompanied by Ziemowit Klimek on upright bass and synth, bounces between the piano and synths with ease and often within the same song. She is a wonder to watch.

I didn’t think he gave an exact time, only that it would be “Soon (tm).”

Verdict is not out yet. But if he gives Letitia James what she asked for, Trump will be on the hook for $370 million MORE, and barred from doing business in New York.

I think it’s because he said he would deliver a verdict “in a couple of weeks,” and that works out to around today? I don’t remember the specific timeline or the words he used, but I remember specifically that he said he knew there was great interest, and that everybody would know when the verdict came in.

Part of me hopes he has the verdict but wants Trump to twist in the wind for being such a dickface in his courtroom.

Also, can we marvel at the fact that Trump is already barred from operating a charity because he stole the money for himself? And that after this, he’ll be barred from doing business at all in New York? And that he’s an adjudicated rapist? And that in spite of all of that, there are millions of people who will still vote for him?

Not only vote for him. There are millions of people who somehow, despite all of the criming and the lying the divorces and the sleeping with a prostitute while his wife was pregnant, think he is not only more moral than the quietly pious and observant current President, but the living paragon of morality itself.

All I just got my California Sample Ballot. Looking at it and I see for both Senate races Steve Garvey is on the first line. Adam Schiff is on the bottom line for the short tern race With Barbara Lee and Katie Porter in the middle of both ballots.

For President…Grifter Marianne Williamson has the top line…and Joe Biden is in the bottom of the ballot…

27 people are on the ballot for the full Senate term and only 7 are on the ballot for the short term.

Only one initiative on the ballot involving mental health services and since I see Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association opposing it That means it’s OK and I’ll vote YES on that.

OJ prosecutor Christopher Darden is running for one of the Judicial offices…

The bolded is a reasonable rule of thumb. I amused myself the other day with the CA sample ballot by reading the GOP CA-SEN candidate statements. One of them was a Trumpist loon in full clown honking noises mode, stolen election and all. The rest were the usual mix of overt MAGAts and stealth MAGAts (moderate Republicans being fully extinct, even in CA).

Lyndon LaRouche had these kinds of followers, but he was always on the fringe. It’s hard to think of a guy this nutty and corrupt enjoying massive success. Maybe Ron Paul a few years back? Ross Perot? Even those guys withered away once it was understood how crazy they were.

Don’t underestimate the power of reality TV. He built a formidable army of dipshits even before he got into politics, then used Birtherism to expand it even more.

I remember a time when I was yelling to the world that the Birther conspiracy theory never went away, but was more pervasive and virulent than ever. Trump’s con man instincts recognized a meme he could exploit and he did, to the max.

Ross Perot’s fans, as numerous as they were, were nowhere near this crazy. Luap Nor and Lyndon LaDouche had the crazy, but not the numbers. Trump has the star power (he was a household name in America even before he ran for President), and the base cunning, to multiply those followers, using the power of social media to keep beating the same tired old drum of racism and misogyny that so attracts the kooks.

It makes a really weird sense if you discard the rules of reality. What they want is a strongman who will tell the people who ordinarily tell them what to do (or they perceive them as doing so) to stop doing that. Basically, they want a bigger bully so that they can do whatever they want in peace.

Mike Lindell ally reveals he is ‘losing everything’ — and then breaks down crying

Sherronna Bishop spoke to the Turning Point Action conference about the horrific life that Mike Lindell has been plagued with after he attacked large companies claiming they “stole” the 2020 election. 🤣

Bishop purported to be part of the “Lindell team,” telling the audience she’s close enough to the pillow magnate that she too “was raided with the battering ram.” The Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic cases are civil cases, not criminal.

Bishop leaked personal information and voter data from Mesa County, Arizona, and handed it over to QAnon conspiracy theorists, reported Colorado Public Radio in Nov. 2021. That alleged data theft got the FBI involved, which is why her home was searched. Her work with Lindell hasn’t been the source of the “large teams of heavily armed federal agents, using a battering ram to break down doors.”

She described Lindell as “losing everything, to gain a country. That’s what we’re doing right now.”

She broke down when she began to describe what Lindell had faced.

“In the face of unbelievable odds,” she choked up as the audience applauded.

A South Carolina judge denied Alex Murdaugh’s bid for a new double-murder trial on Monday after his defense team accused a clerk of court with tampering with a jury.

Judge Jean Toal ruled that even if Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill did tell jurors to watch Murdaugh’s actions and body language on the stand, the defense failed to prove that such comments directly influenced their decision to find him guilty.

Apple to some employees: Move to Texas or GTFO.

Apple is giving a group of its employees in San Diego two choices: move to Austin, Texas, or get the boot.

The tech giant is reportedly giving the 121 employees on its Data Operations Annotations team, which works on Siri, until the end of February to make a decision on whether or not they want to move to Austin by the end of June to merge with that same team in Texas. If an employee chooses not to relocate, the company will terminate their position on April 26, according to a recent report from Bloomberg.

Must be from Raw Story. There is no Mesa County, Arizona.

Sherronna Bishop was in cahoots with Tina Peters. She was the County Clerk & Recorder and she gave all the voting info in her county to Tim Pool or some shit. Tina Peters has been criminally convicted of obstructing government operations and still faces charges for election tampering and official misconduct.

This is interesting. Possibly the first story like this I find believable

Amelia Earhart’s long-lost plane possibly spotted in the Pacific by exploration team:

New clues have emerged in what is one of the greatest mysteries of all time: the disappearance of legendary American aviator Amelia Earhart.

Deep Sea Vision, an ocean exploration company based in South Carolina, announced Saturday that it captured compelling sonar images of what could be Earhart’s aircraft at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

The discovery was made possible by a high-tech unmanned underwater drone and a 16-member crew, which surveyed more than 5,200 square miles of ocean floor between September and December.

The team spotted the plane-shaped object between Australia and Hawaii, about 100 miles off Howland Island, which is where Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were supposed to refuel but never arrived.

The shape of the object in the sonar images closely resembles Earhart’s aircraft, a Lockheed Electra, both in size and tail. Deep Sea Vision founder, Tony Romeo, said he was optimistic in what they found.

Don’t you remember the big ceremony with a giant door & 10 ft of “Wall” on each side? With all the TV cameras when TFG’s massive motorcade went to the Southern Border & His Orange Excellency carried a giant key over his shoulder like a musket, and used it to “lock” the huge door and proclaim the Border “closed”!

Don’t you remember that migrant family who scampered around the end of the “Wall” and ran off into the desert, laughing, while Border Patrol chased after them but they got away.

I mean apart from the fact that it never happened? There is no way to “lock” the border, not even the Indians & Pakistanis “lock” the border after their ceremony for the tourists.

I think a lot of liberal men got very complacent, told themselves the heavy-lifting had already been done, patted themselves on the back for 30% of the House being female and called it a day. Women knew better.

It will be interesting to see if Dodds has any real effect on changing that view. 83 % of Democratic women beleive that abortion ahould be legal and 81% of men. Now is the time for them to really put some real effort in.

I’d say Taylor already answered them quite awhile ago…

Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down

150
silverdolphin  Jan 30, 2024 • 12:42:44am

TL:DR Swift found a creative way to get around the bullying men who thought they could control her. By doing so, she marketed herself into the stratospheric realm (Oprah-land?) she now inhabits. Perhaps if she had been treated with respect, she would just be a popular singer still making money for the patriarchy.
_______________

Taylor Swift was always talented but I believe she really took off into Oprah levels because she found an innovatve way to get around the fact that someone she really disliked purchased all the masters to her previous albums (He was the manager of Kanye West who famously used a nude mannequin of Swift in bed with him in a music video as he called her a bitch. The duo’s misogyny towards her apparently started when West took the mike away from her and said Beyonce should have won an award.)

These men thought they were going to show this woman who had the real power, in a way that would warm any MAGA male’s heart - control all the creative works that made her a star.so they could prostitute them by controlling who got to sing her songs.

“He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. “

Kelly Clarkson, another smart lady who has freed herself from the record labels. suggested she re-record all the songs/albums, using new artwork and adding bonuses for the fans.

Starting in 2021, she re-recorded all of them, making them “Taylor’s versions” and finishing last year. Every one of them took off. Her fans only wanted the ‘official’ version so the library of original masters quickly dropped in value. She became the first performer in 60 years to have 4 albums rank in the top 10 - simultaneously.

And since she owns the masters of these new recordings, she can now control their licensing. She refuses to license any of the original recordings but is open to using the “Taylor’s Version”. Anyone asking knows to only ask about the “Taylor Version”; that the fans will notice.

And her fans do know the difference. They have been there as the industry tried to control her and they see the inventive way to route around that control as something to celebrate.

It was the retention of control of her own creative works that I believe really sent Swift into very rarefied air. And a lot of the re-releases coincided with her Eras tour, making it even bigger. She is a smart businesswoman and has found a win-win way to make money, control her destiny and satisfy her fans.

And made her very hated by misogynstic men. They hate it when a women outsmarts a man.

Hell, my Trumpbot neighbor told me Obama was more loyal to his “tribe in Africa” than America. Thanks, Jerome Corsi, you piece of excrement.

And Newt Gingrich menioning Obama’s “Kenyan world view”. Which I first read as “Keynesian world view”, which I thought applied to Obama…

And no, not in the sense of Kenya as a former British colony that fought for and won its independence, but in the sense of armed Mau-Mau rape gangs with machetes chopping white settlers to pieces.

I been thinking the same about Putin. Now that his economy is in the shitter, he does not have much to lose by rattling his saber: the threat of a war between NATO and Russia could really tank the EU economy.

I think if he attacked a NATO country, Russia would very rapid see its internal infrastructure reduced to rubble. Hard to have a war if the railroads in Russia are not functional. Or if no planes can fly.

Air power is something it has not had to worry about with Ukraine, to its benefit since it really has no air power itself. NATO would.

A buddy of mine whose journey off the deep end began when Obama was elected, firmly believes every lie about Obama, no matter how vile, no matter how stupid it may be. He’s a good dude, but he’s been impossible to be around in the Trump era. Makes me sad, but it’s impossible to avoid his rants about trans people and the “globalists,” et al.

I broke up with a GF after two years, an otherwise highly intelligent woman but she really fell into the rabbit hole and at one point insisted that Biden is not only not our legally elected President, but the fellow in the White House is not Biden but a body double.

When I asked her if he was a lizardoid alien, she replied “no comment”. I packed my suitcase and left the next morning. One cannot be in a relationship with someone who occupies a parallel reality.

20 years ago we were suing teenagers for millions of dollars because they were torrenting a single Metallica album and now billionaires are demanding the free right to every work in history, so that they can re-sell it.

If they can use these works without respecting the copyright then others should be able to do the same with the works their AI generates with it.

For you geeks out there, an episode of Star Trek: Voyager addressed that idea when their sentient holographic doctor started writing holonovels. The publishers decided that he had to copyright as he was not a human being.

The courts then ruled on the one hand that the hologram had to copyrights but that since they were machine generated, neither did the publisher. Or something like that.

Incredibly presicent bit of writing for the late 1990s

Sorry.

Drone footage shot off the coast of Southern California may have revealed the first ever glimpse of a newborn great white shark in the wild.

The 1.5-meter-long (5-foot-long) white shark was spotted on July 9, 2023, 400 meters (1,300 feet) off the coast of Carpinteria, California, by wildlife filmmaker Carlos Gauna and Phillip Sternes, a doctoral student in the department of biology at University of California Riverside, while they were shooting aerial video and images.

Its pale coloring and size immediately struck the duo as unusual. Adult great white sharks are gray on top and white underneath.

Gauna and Sternes examined the images and video in the viewfinder of the drone camera and noticed a thin, white film covering the shark that was sloughing off the animal as it moved.

“We enlarged the images, put them in slow motion, and realized the white layer was being shed from the body as it was swimming,” Sternes said in a news release. “I believe it was a newborn white shark shedding its embryonic layer.”

According to Vice’s report, the less-than-stellar turnout was likely due to theories circulating in right-wing circles that the convoy could be a “psyop” or “honeypot” trap laid by the federal government to coax people into committing violence.

re: #3 Charles Johnson

It’s possible that the court ordered monitor, a former judge, also found discrepancies and malfeasance by Trump’s business operations, leading to additional issues that have to be addressed by the Judge.

The facts are indisputable at this point:
Civil fraud case- the judge found fraud. The trial where Trump spewed BS for a few minutes on the stand was only about the damages. The evidence Trump purported to show that fraud didn’t occur failed to undermine the state’s evidence of malfeasance. The state was looking for at least $370 million in disgorgement/damages plus a ban on Trump family members (Don Jr and Eric) from being allowed to operate businesses in NY. Trumpworld was already banned from operating a charity in NY thanks to his scam operations previously adjudicated.

Defamation cases - Carroll 1 and Carroll 2 - both are defamation cases relating to different time periods. A jury found Trump liable for defaming Carroll, finding that for civil purposes, Trump sexually assaulted Carroll, which is equivalent to rape in common vernacular. The damages for the first case to go to trial was over $5 million. The damages from the second case was $83 million.

In the defamation cases, it was actual juries that found Trump liable for defamation and identified the damages (and in the second case found Trump engaged in such egregious conduct, exceeded Carroll’s team’s recommended compensation amounts by a huge margin). Trump again shows complete and total disregard for the rule of law and the justice system in the US. He thinks himself above the law, and all of this claims for an appeal will fall flat because there were no legal errors in any of the Carroll cases.

It will fight for the rights of “people with foreign roots” and take a stand against “anti-Muslim racism”, said Fatih Zingal, a leading DAVA figure with links to the Turkish president.

I was listening to a radio report on Muslims in Germany. Many of them turn to their Imans for advice on personal and family matters, just as Christians would go to their priest or pastor.

Most of these Imams are from Turkey and are trained abroad, with little experience of life in modern Europe or the West. That means that their advice is often going to be more suitable for Anatolia than Düsseldorf.

Germany has yet to address the notion of training native Muslim clerics to take of this vital role in the Muslim community.

Meanwhile in the Jesus Land of Oklahoma…

Lankford Gets The MAGA Treatment For Defying Trump And Legislating

Amid apparent infighting in the Oklahoma Republican Party, a resolution was passed over the weekend to formally condemn Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), who has caught the ire of Donald Trump supporters for working on the bipartisan immigration bill that Trump had asked congressional Republicans to spike.

There appear to be bigger tensions within the Oklahoma GOP ranks that have left some current and former members of the state Republican Party calling that condemnation vote — which accused Lankford of “playing fast and loose with Democrats” on border policy they say is antithetical to the state party’s platform — illegitimate. But the move to punish Lankford, legitimate or not, signals that GOP activists are taking Trump’s cue, and repercussions may be coming down the pike for any Republican who dares to defy the former president in his attempt to torpedo the legislation.

My colleague Kate Riga reported on this unraveling dynamic last week. In short, Trump has been communicating to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and other Republicans in Congress that border deal is “bad” and should be dropped. That’s not because he or any other Republicans besides those working on the bipartisan commission have seen the language of the bill. It’s because solving the border “crisis” now gives Republicans one less thing to campaign on during a presidential cycle in which they, once again, have no policy platform. Trump himself also wants to use it to attack Biden in the months leading up to the general election.

‘Ultimate degeneration’: Nevada Republicans fear they’ve made their state ‘irrelevant’

On Feb. 6, the state will hold a primary in which GOP voters will go to their usual precincts but there will be only one serious contender, Nikki Haley, on the ballot. Then, two days later, the Republican Party will host a caucus in which GOP voters will go to school gyms and church basements where they can express their support for only one credible candidate, Donald Trump.

Both parties used to hold caucuses here, but in 2021, the Nevada legislature passed a law requiring the state to hold primaries. State GOP officials wanted to stick with the caucus because they’ve done it that way before, and because the state’s new presidential primary requirements failed to include voter ID. It’s the kind of gathering that tends to draw the most fervent, activist members of a party — no coincidence, the same as Trump’s base. GOP officials decided that the caucus would be the only contest that will award delegates to the national convention.

Last fall, leaders of the group meeting at the Ahern, the Nevada Republican Club — a separate entity from the Nevada Republican Party — urged party officials not to hold a caucus competing with the state-run primary, arguing ” negative publicity from this will make the Republican Party look bad and likely diminish participation in the Primary election.”

The effect, they wrote, would be to “frustrate, anger and confuse Nevada’s Republican voters,” giving “average voters the impression they don’t care about them or their votes.”

Looking back, it seems they were right. Recent headlines about the election here have ranged from ” EXPERTS: Why Trump, DeSantis are not on Nevada Primary Election ballot” to ” Dual elections causing confusion among Nevada Republican voters” to ” Nevada Republicans can’t decide between a primary or a caucus — so they’re doing both.”

Looks like Alex Murdaugh might get a new murder trial after a juror came forward to claim that a court officer’s comments may have influenced the juror’s decision.

Uh no?

Alex Murdaugh is denied a new trial after a judge hears jury tampering allegations

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina judge denied Alex Murdaugh’s bid for a new double-murder trial on Monday after his defense team accused a clerk of court with tampering with a jury.

Judge Jean Toal ruled that even if Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill did tell jurors to watch Murdaugh’s actions and body language on the stand, the defense failed to prove that such comments directly influenced their decision to find him guilty.

npr.org

This is a highly unusual situation, the judge who just ruled was appointed by the South Carolina Supreme Court (and herself was the former chief justice of same) to hear this and I don’t think that it’s appealable. In any case, even if the murder sentences were overturned, he still accepted plea bargains of four years (federal) and 27 years (state) for financial shenanigans. And South Carolina, like the Feds, requires 85 percent of a sentence to be served prior to release. He’s 55, if he ever gets out he’ll be around 80 and still owing millions of dollars to the people he defrauded.

From Jay Cuo on X:

It’s hard to believe, but the GOP is turning its best weapon—the border crisis—into a political liability.
Joe Biden has been seen by voters as weak on the question of the border. Crossings have surged lately, and even Democratic leaders, particularly big city mayors, are pleading for a solution as shelters become overwhelmed with migrants.
It’s a crisis in need of a solution, they have repeatedly claimed. So for months Senate negotiators have sought one, and the parties are very near to a deal. Despite this promising development in the Senate, however, it now seems Republicans over in the House don’t want a solution after all.
That’s because Donald Trump has made it clear he really doesn’t want one. And it could leave the Republicans, including Trump, with egg on their faces when they face the voters in November.

re: #220 Decatur Deb

Our intrepid convoy adventurers got back onto I-10, only a half hour late—hardly USAREUR standard. They picked up some Florida locals, might have had a dropout or two. Digging into them a bit is interesting—their first-line leadership introduced themselves at the AM briefing. The top 3 in the convoy are all Church Militant, a very nutcase Catholic RW group told to drop the “Catholic” moniker by their Michigan archdiocese. SPLC carries them as a hate group, specifically anti-LBGT.

Just a reminder that Church Militant’s former founder and head, Michael Voris, was basically forced out last November after he admitted to breaching the org’s morality clause.

apnews.com

A clever media would be asking those Church Militant people what they thought about that, and/or check to see if Voris was among the convoy.

This is a *good* movie. I’ve seen it. I highly recommend it. Heck, my picky ex-boyfriend liked it. There’s a lot more to it than just Godzilla stomping around. There is a story, an arc. As for the b&w version, the filmmakers went back through and took their color film and reprocessed it as black and white so it looks like Godzilla in 1954. I should see if it’s playing around here. I think it’s for one week only and ends either tomorrow or Thursday.

ETA: Oh yeah, and they did the movie on a ~$16 million budget. It doesn’t look like it!

Bigots score a victory in Maine…

wonkette.com

White Supremacists Chase DEI Coordinator Out Of Maine

Over the last year or so, varied and sundry right-wing lunatics have been drumming up a hysteria over diversity, equity and inclusion practices (DEI) largely because their various other hysterias over terms like “woke” and “critical race theory” have grown stale, and they need something to bring Republicans to the polls now that they can see the abortion regulations are not working out so well for them.

Now that hysteria is doing what it was always intended to do: It has driven Mohammed Albehadli, the diversity, equity and inclusion coordinator for public schools in South Portland, Maine, to quit his job and flee the whole state after getting a threatening letter from a white supremacist.

Albehadli is an an Iraqi immigrant who came to the US a decade ago in order to escape the horrors that we inflicted upon his country in our zeal to go after terrorists who weren’t even from there. He holds degrees from Trinity College and Boston University, and according to the school superintendent, he was “an exemplary staff member” who made a “positive impact” on the schools.

But as much support as he has from the community, Albehadli has no interest in putting himself or his family at risk and is not going to wait around for things to take a scary turn. “You hear something first. And the next thing, an action follows,” he said, according to the AP.

The email came from New Hampshire resident Ryan Murdough, the founder of the New England White Network, who has been sending unhinged racist emails to various people throughout New England since at least 2010. Murdough previously ran for the state Legislature as a Republican — though that was before the rest of the GOP was quite as enthusiastic as they currently are about saying the quiet part out loud, so he lost.

In the slur-filled email, Murdough wrote, “White parents don’t want their children going to school with black and brown kids who don’t belong in the United States” — which, given how strongly Democratic South Portland is, seems a whole lot like wishful thinking on his part.

Murdough explained on Gab (because of course he is on Gab — although he only has 2100 followers, which is pretty pathetic for a white supremacist who has been in the game as long as he has) that he sent the letter in response to an article on how Albehadli and three other members of the school board’s Elementary Boundaries and Configurations Steering Committee were discussing the possibility of restructuring area elementary schools in order to make them less racially and economically segregated. That’s it. That’s what he’s upset about.

During a segment on how Republicans are responding to proposed border legislation in light of how Donald Trump recently came out against it, Reid introduced a relevant clip of President Joe Biden speaking at a South Carolina event over the weekend.

“If that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border right now and fix it quickly… And Congress needs to get it done,” Biden said, referring to the deal that Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) has been negotiating with Democrats.

Reid can then be heard saying with a laugh, “—Starting another fucking war.” Her mic was then cut, but turned on a moment later. It was unclear what the MSNBC anchor was referring to.

Used to do my own taxes; with 20/20 hindsight that was an insane choice. One of the best decisions I made was finding a decent tax professional to do my taxes. The few hundred dollars spent each year has paid for itself many times over in reduced stress and in tax savings.

While the women in the party try to empower other women, the men of our party are just kinda paying lip service. I’ve told this story before, but back in 2016 a Lefty friend went nuts on me after Bernie dropped out of the race. He was refusing to vote for her, and I pointed out that Bernie had endorsed her. He said, in all caps, “BECAUSE SHE THREATENED TO MURDER HIS FAMILY!”

The lies keep coming out of the mouths of House Republicans!

‘Slave trade’: House Republican makes wild allegations accusing Biden of ‘traitorous’ acts

And of course it’s another asshole from Texas.

U.S. Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) served up wild accusations against President Joe Biden and his administration on Monday during a House Republicans’ press conference on the border. After making demands of the Biden Administration to send an ultra-conservative bill that includes funding and stringent policies for the U.S. border, and funding to support fighting in Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, Republicans are now rejecting what they requested after decrees from Donald Trump.

Congresswoman Van Duyne, a Texas backbencher who failed at her attempt to be elevated into House leadership when Mike Johnson was made Speaker, on Monday in a little-noticed speech served up allegations of “traitorous acts,” “usher[ing] in a new era of slave trade,” and promoting the “endless rapes” of women and children and a “lifetime of sex trafficking enslavement,” against President Biden and his administration.

“Joe Biden and the extremists in his administration are arsonists,” Congresswoman Van Duyne declared. “From day one they have burned down every shred of strong, effective, Trump-era border security policy that was protecting America.”

“Their purposeful and persistent actions, the arsonists of the Biden administration have created a national security and humanitarian nightmare. By turning over control of our southern border to the Mexican cartels, Biden, the Democrats, have ushered in a new massive era of slave trade here in America that is cursing the lives of illegal immigrant women, little girls and little boys. But Biden, [DHS Secretary] Mayorkas, and the Democrats couldn’t care less about the lives of these small children. They’re condemning them to endless rapes in a lifetime of sex trafficking enslavement.”

This is the moment heavily armed Israeli commandos disguised as Muslim women and doctors raided a West Bank hospital early Tuesday — shooting three suspected terrorists dead in just 10 minutes.

The dramatic surveillance video from Ibn Sina hospital in the town of Jenin shows about a dozen Israeli undercover special forces soldiers dressed as Muslim women in headscarves or hospital workers in scrubs or white doctor coats rushing through a hallway with assault rifles drawn.

One of the Israeli soldiers is in a surgical mask and carrying a rifle in one arm and a folded wheelchair in the other.

Another, dressed in all black, pats down a man kneeling against a wall with his hands clasped behind his head.

Other graphic images released by Palestinian news media showed a blood-soaked pillow with a bullet hole on a hospital bed and a foldout armchair covered with blood.

That doesn’t make his point wrong. We can’t minimize the very real suffering Democrats in red states are going through, nor abstract away their feelings behind, “They should just try harder.” We’re supposed to be the ones who care about all our people, and just writing off those who would be hurt most by secession (you think Texas wouldn’t declare an open season on people who wanted to stay a part of America if they seceded?) is callous disregard even if the threat of secession isn’t serious.

People in Texas are fucked in many ways, not just Democrats (the Republicans just don’t want to admit that their state is last or near-last in basic indicators of education, health and social welfare.)

But secession is an idle threat. The fact that they are making it at all just indicates how fucked things are in Texas.

In my mind (and I could well be wrong), the “k bye” response reflects the unserious level of thought behind the whole secession movement.

It’s not writing off the very good people in Texas who are fighting Abbott in serious ways about serious things. It’s saying TO THE SECESSIONISTS that they’re as fundamentally unserious as my three year old was when she “left home.”

“OK. Go have fun with your silly temper tantrum and come back when you have someone who’s ready to talk to the grownups. But I’m not going to let you waste my time or mental energy pretending to take you at all seriously in the meantime.”

The East German wall was designed to keep people in. Texas Republicans would set one of those up, and they would eliminate people who don’t fit their ideal.

JFC, close to half a billion bucks. Yowza.

Given that Trump is so damn cheap that he embezzled charity funds to pay for his son’s Boy Scout uniform, anything that takes away his money is an existential threat for him.

Better yet is the forced sale of his properties and the removal of the giant “TRUMP” signs in front of a laughing, jeering mob.

I don’t think that the monthly recurring charges that the online sharks set up to drain meemaw’s Social Security check is going to make up for this hit.

A Cranky One  Jan 30, 2024 • 9:14:02am

Let’s see. If Texas succeeds, they will need:

A new military force
Custom controls on all roads in/out of Texas
New currency
New passports
New coastal guard
A new constitution
A new court system
A new commerce agency
Etc.

I’m sure Texas taxpayers will be thrilled with the taxes required to meet those expenses.

Since its debut on Netflix in the United States, Black Mirror has become known for dazzling audiences with its unique take on sociotechnology, and now it appears that one of the series’ most highly regarded episodes is finally getting its own spin-off series. ‘USS Callister’ marked the first episode of season four of Black Mirror, and quickly became a fan-favorite for its nod to Star Trek. It went on to win four Primetime Emmy Awards, and it looks like creator Charlie Brooker isn’t ready to let go of its success just yet.

According to What’s on Netflix, a three-episode limited series based on ‘USS Callister’ is moving forward at Netflix after rumors of its development began circulating in 2018. Based on reports, the series is set to start filming in the United Kingdom this spring, with production lasting around 10 weeks. There’s no word yet on plot details for the spin-off, but it has been said that the show will introduce a new character named Rinko.

Attorney General Merrick Garland to undergo surgery, Justice Department says

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Merrick Garland will undergo back surgery this weekend and delegate his duties to the deputy attorney general during the procedure, the Justice Department said Monday.

The news comes as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin returns to work at the Pentagon following a hospitalization related to prostate cancer that was criticized for being kept secret for days.

Garland, 71, will be under general anesthesia during the back procedure on Saturday, which will last about 90 minutes and is “minimally invasive,” said Xochitl Hinojosa, director of public affairs at the Justice Department. He is expected to return home the same day, she said. Garland will delegate his duties to Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco shortly before, during and for a short time after the procedure as he recovers from the anesthesia, the statement said. He is expected to return to work the week of Feb. 5.

The big difference in the case of a presumed “Texit”, is that the UK - prior to leaving the EU - already possessed most/all the institutions noted in #292; not to mention an autonomous national economy. Texas, AFACBD, does not: and (unless I am mistaken) is far more tied into, and mutually-dependent on, the economy of the greater US that the UK was to “Europe”.
