New From Yard Act: “When the Laughter Stops”

Music • Views: 11,521

I got the call for the audition,
it was the chance of a lifetime
It said, “If all requirements of this role come to fruition,
you’ll never work another day in your life.”
So, I let my hair grow wrong, don’t shave my face,
I got some brand new boots and gained a bit of weight,
but when I finally got the script in for the role which I was hoping,
it said I’d play the victim shot dead in the cold open.
TIME’S UP, don’t be scared,
the future got a room without a view in your own head.
Head down, no comment,
it’s just a matter of opinion.
Don’t let no one ever know about the burden that you’re smuggling,
dry your eyes at the gate to hide the struggling,
the stories that you’re juggling,
the fear you must be funnelling,
bury till you’re burrowing,
pain is such a funny thing.
So, let them replicate my past success
with casting from the same subset of men
who’s fleeting failures are all they ever knew,
With a straightface beyond repair digging a grave of nil dispair
between the crosshairs of a crop that never grow.
We pay no respect to common intellect,
and watch the insects suck the marrow from the bone,
for when we go back to our proper jobs and realise the laughter’s stopped,
I need to know my chance was fully blown.
Don’t let no one ever know about the burden that you’re smuggling,
dry your eyes at the gate to hide the struggling,
the stories that you’re juggling,
the fear you must be funnelling,
bury till you’re burrowing,
pain is such a funny thing.
TIME’S UP, don’t be scared,
the future got a room without a view in your own head.
Head down, no comment,
it’s all a matter of opinion.

This is a great point. The algorithms are geared towards engagement. They watch what you react to and show you more of that. If that means ruining your mental health by making you upset 24/7, it’s a small price to pay if it means Musk might recoup some of his money. Same goes for Dorsey or Zuckerberg. They need us upset and angry if they hope to make any real money.

It’s on Disney+

We watched it and agree: Iman Vellani is a treasure and a complete natural as an actor and I don’t understand the hate at all except for misogynoir. None of these Marvel movies are any different in my eyes. They are just a bunch of noise, some setup for the next film, and a big boss battle. This one was basically Freaky Friday but with superpowers.

I liked it. It’s the first movie where the heroes had to come together to be more than the individual, as compared to the Avengers where the group was just overwhelming force. Plus Kamala Khan’s family are a hoot. There were a couple of corny moments, but it’s a large universe and they were fun.

Edit: corrected Khan.

I very much liked it, and ranked it in the upper half of MCU movies. It’s definitely better than the first Captain marvel movie, and I liked it better than most of the other post-Endgame movies (actually, maybe tied with the Black Widow movie, which I really consider a pre-Endgame movie in my head).

Dr. Biden referred to Joe’s age as an asset. That’s repeatable. Somehow, Trump’s age is not an asset. A cleverly worded distinction is called for.

Both your sentiments - and disenchantment with modern big budget blockbusters - is why I’ve recently fallen down the Japanese tokusatsu rabbithole.

Sure, it’s children’s programming. Sure, it’s formulaic as f*ck. Sure, the Metal Heroes “Space Sheriff” trio of series of the early to mid eighties is often like a bad acid trip. Sure, the monsters of the week are ridiculous, and all the machines and equipment look like (and are meant to sell) plastic toys, but sometimes you just need goofy sh*t outside your normal experience in this depressing world.

(Yes, I watch Super Sentai and enjoy it. No, I can’t stand Power Rangers. I don’t like the specific approach taken in localizing it to make it palatable to Western audiences, even as I acknowledge the need for certain changes needing to be made to conform with American network standards and practices.)

Well then, I’ll repeat her reference:

Joe is 81, that’s true, but he’s 81 doing more in an hour than most people do in a day. Joe has wisdom, empathy, and vision. He has delivered on so many of his promises as President precisely because he’s learned a lot in those 81 years. His age, with his experience and expertise, is an incredible asset and he proves it every day.

Reagan, for all his many and quite egregious faults, was very good at memorizing scripts. One of the prepared scripts he was given by his handlers was in case his age was brought up. It was quite effective in ending that avenue of attack. (As was the fact that his party was the one fielding all the slimy shit-throwers.)

“I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience,” Ronald Reagan quipped during the 1984 presidential debates when asked if, at 73, he is too old to be President.

I watched it last night and I couldn’t disagree more. It feels like Marvel has been fully Disney-fied. It felt like 100 million dollar episode of the Wizards of Waverly place. The musical planet, herding cats, not to mention the spaceballs style atmosphere stealing bad guy that made no sense. Sorry just wasn’t my cup of tea. Ms. Marvel was definitely the highlight of what I thought was a less than mediocre movie.

It is Disney so I shouldn’t be surprised they are targeting a younger more family oriented audience, but it just didn’t compare to pre disney marvel. It wasn’t the worst marvel movie, but I am glad I didn’t waste money to see it in theaters

Edit: Also not sure what that guy in the original post meant by them not sticking as much money in this one, the movie had a 270 million dollar budget, One of the top 5 most expensive marvel movies.

Ha! I had to look up ‘yat’. Reminded me of a lot of Pittsburgh dialect aka yinzer.

Giuliani lashes out at Super Bowl for ‘insulting’ him with the Black National Anthem

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said that he was personally insulted after what’s known as “The Black National Anthem” was scheduled to be performed at the Super Bowl.

On Giuliani’s Sunday WABC radio program, co-host Maria Ryan said she had a “beef” with the NFL.

“They’re going to do what’s called a Black National Anthem, and then America’s National Anthem,” she explained. “Please stop dividing us. We can’t allow this. If you want to sing another song, that’s fine. I don’t care about that at all, but to call it Black National Anthem is dividing us. We’re all American citizens.”

More on the shooting incident at Osteen’s church

abcnews.go.com

Not a lot more (even tho considering it’s about 1-1/2 hours ago) - most of the reports (at least AFAICT) simply report that there was a shots-fired incident at the church at a Spanish service at 2:00p; that everyone bolted (their prayers were likely a tad more intense this time), and that a deputy reportedly shot the assailant. I’m sure we’ll discover more in time.
And likely NOT a drag queen.

There have been driverless taxis in San Francisco for a while now, and they’ve been involved in a fair number of accidents and even more controversy, so I don’t think we need to assume that the vandals were Luddites.

Also, it was Chinese New Year evening in Chinatown, and the car burned because of the fireworks set off in it (after they tagged it), which opens up all kinds of other possible reasons for the car burning.

Captain America: Civil War would probably be my top pick.

Which is a good movie, though i think Winter Soldier was better. Not every life experience is a Tom Clancy novel, though.

My family and I were talking about The Marvels, and we do think one thing could have been done to make it better:

Start the movie with Danvers fighting the Kree to destroy the Supreme Intelligence, and show the immediate effect it would have on Hala, so that we see the emotional effect on Dar-Benn early.

Captain America: Civil War would probably be my top pick.

Captain America: Civil War was released on May 6, 2016, roughly six and a half years after Disney acquired Marvel in December 2009.

Only two MCU movies had been released prior to Disney’s acquisition of Marvel: Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. Iron Man 2 was released six months after the buyout, but had been greenlit and filmed before it.

Trump, oddly enough, may be helping inspire Republicans to do the right thing with his “Russia you can attack NATO all you want” rhetoric. Ukraine needs a shit-ton of ammunition and it takes time to get that into the theater. Hopefully there are enough HIMARS and ATACMS in Germany that we can quickly get those in to hammer Russian strong points and pause their advances while artillery arrives.

A few years ago, Texas Tech basketball rioters turned a car over and set it on fire outside a Lubbock bar. It turned out that the car’s owner, the bartender at the same bar, had instigated the burning because the car was in bad shape and he hoped to get kind hearted people to buy him a new one. The scam was exposed and he was fired. The same mob did pile up about 40 Lime scooters and burn them (once heated sufficiently, the batteries are apparently highly combustible).
My security manager friend said they had a guard on duty at a church across the street when the riot went down. The guard called the dispatcher and said, “There’s a thousand people across the street and they’re setting fires and starting to turn a car over. 9-1-1 is jammed. What should I do??”
The dispatcher said, “Get the hell out of there now! We don’t get paid to mess with that kind of shit.”

I don’t recall which debate it was — but in 1984, wasn’t there a debate in which Reagan seemed confused? So for a brief day or so, there was talk about his mental fitness.

Good point, but Marvel was largely autonomous in those early years, had their own headquarters and production teams. All Disney had really taken over at that point was the marketing. The assimilation had only just begun ;)

i spend the afternoon rewiring some of our solar distribution panel
imagine my surprise when the new solid state relay (SSR) did not work.
- wouldnt switch on/off
- and worse, seemed to be passing power through no matter what

at the same time a separate low voltage relay seemed to stop working. worked fine this morning.
did i break it when i rewired it? wtf?
compounded problems (or so it seemed)

i racked my brains for an hour and then went online

seems when this company wrote in the instructions “Please connect the load on the positive side”, they actually meant on the NEGATIVE side.

additionally, one of the ‘+’ signs in their schematic should have been a ‘-‘.
I’m guessing problems in the translations from/to chinese

so i had lunch, took a breath then set up a quick test bench to prove it.
yup should have been negative not positive.
and, oh yeah, i had the LVC set to not turn back on until battery charge reached 13.8 volts. it was a cloudy day so hovering at 13.6. i was so wrapped up in getting the SSR to work i forgot how I programmed the LVC. that’s why the switching wasn’t working

anyway i got the test to work correctly, drew a new schematic of the whole panel section with the right polarity, and we’ll wait for next weekend to try again

whenever this happens (negative not positive) i think of monty python and the mattresses:

But it does mean that when he says a bed is two foot long, it is in fact sixty foot long, all right?

Crank Magnetism:

For most of its long existence, [ufo cult] ODF has been harmless, but in the early-to-mid 1980s, it got linked up with the Posse Comitatus, a primitive version of what is today known as the sovereign citizen movement. An unusual and generally forgotten aspect of the

1980s Posse was that people associated with it managed to connect themselves to a wide variety of fringe religious groups across the U.S. In any case, the ODF was joined by members of the Lingenfelter family, led by Merlon Lingenfelter, Sr., who joined together his own resolute
anti-Semitism, his pseudo-legal sovereign citizen beliefs, and the UFOlogy of ODF. As he told one local newspaper, “Your President, all supporting Bloodsuckers of the US, plus all Bloodsuckers of Canada and Mexico, have been duly served and convicted in the Outer Dimensional
Forces Foursquare Court at Alternate Base, of Triple High Treason.

Crank Magnetism at Rationalwiki. This is a major marketing tool for quacks of every kind. It is why Moon landing deniers, flat-Earthers, and creationists nearly always seem to have a line of quack healthcare products or similar scams they are peddling. How is Moon landing denial related to, say, essential oils? The anti-science claim attracts people who are susceptible to the profit making scam.

Chris McCaffrey should be the NFC Player of the Year. He really is the X factor. Purdy isn’t going to lose the Game for the ‘Niners (I think! He’s really smart and I saw him play at Texas twice.) So McCaffrey is key for SF.

Well, we’ll see!

With all the money now out there with legalized gaming (used to be called gambling), I think it’s just a matter of time before some bought player or official is caught.
Broadcasts start with the odds, over/under and so forth. I knew folks who only watched sports because they bet on them. Large.
My 2 cents is, just a matter of time.

AND I just discovered that Amazon TV has a Paramount + “channel” that you find by searching for Prime in the Amazon search bar.
Halo2 is up and I want to watch, but I’m not jumping in for that money. So on Amazon you can get that channel for $5.99 a month, cancel anytime.
Perfect. 7 day free trial, one month, binge, and split.
$5.99.

Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach died in a car crash in Kenya late Sunday, a fellow athlete who went to the hospital and saw Kiptum’s body said.

Kiptum was 24 and on course to be a superstar of long-distance running.

Kiptum was the first man to run the marathon in under 2 hours, 1 minute. He set the new world record of 2:00.35 at the Chicago Marathon in October, beating the mark of fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge.

I am thoroughly SICK of all the gambling advertising. I get it on the browser in my phone. I see it on billboards when I drive around the city. We (my brother and I) were watching the Phoenix Open yesterday and it felt like every other commercial was for gambling. American Values 2024, formerly the People’s Pharma Movement, is a hybrid political action committee supporting independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign.

As a hybrid PAC, the group can function both as a super PAC, raising unlimited funds for independent expenditures, and as a traditional political action committee, giving money to candidates directly. It must have separate bank accounts for each purpose.

The group was co-founded in 2022 by Mark Gorton, CEO of Tower Research Capital and creator of file-sharing platform LimeWire, and Tony Lyons, head of independent book publishing company SkyHorse Publishing. Gorton and Lyons serve as co-chairs of the PAC.
