Shiplord Kirel: From behind wingnut lines  Mar 12, 2024 • 1:36:30pm

Borrowed joke from a FB group…
A woman who had been married three times walked into a bridal shop one day and told the sales clerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her fourth wedding.
“Of course, madam,” replied the sales clerk, “exactly what type and color dress are you looking for?”
The bride-to-be said, “A long frilly white dress with a veil.”
“Please don’t take this the wrong way, madam, but such dresses are usually more fitting for the first time bride who is more innocent in the ways of life, if you get my meaning.”
“WELL!,” replied the customer, a little peeved at the clerk’s directness,
“I can assure you that a white gown would be quite appropriate. Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as a first-time bride.
You see, my first husband was so excited about our wedding, he died as we were checking into our honeymoon hotel.
My second husband and I got into such a terrible fight in the limo on our way to our honeymoon hotel that we had that wedding annulled immediately and never spoke to each other again.”
“What about your third husband?”
“That one was a Republican “, said the woman, “and every night for four years, he just sat on the edge of the bed and told me how good it was going to be, but nothing ever happened.” 🤣

Here is how the Trump /Chubb thing will play out.

1. Trump loses his appeal.

2. Trump dumps out paying Chubb back.

3. Chubb eats it hoping Trump wins the election and Trump allows “free markets” to run wild with insurance hikes.

Oops. CL’d. Re: McConnell’s sister-in-law and the Tesla.

Tesla removed the control stalks from the steering wheel. Some controls are on the wheel itself (turn signals for instance), while shifting gears is now on the screen, while they’re are physical buttons now up by the map lights/rear view mirror. This is the dumbest thing any car maker has ever done.

From the paywalled WSJ article, but cited at Jalopnik:

No one in the family blames Tesla, according to a person familiar with the situation. Breyer and his wife had three Teslas and loved them, and often spoke about how electric vehicles were good for the planet. Breyer considers himself a friend of Elon Musk’s.

These older Teslas that had control stalks. I think if they became more aware if this drastic design change and how it contributed to her death, they may change their minds.

12
The Ghost of a Flea  Mar 12, 2024 • 2:25:17pm

Even if were to come to a lawsuit, Tesla can simply point out that the feature was indicated as a features, but apparently (? I’m doing internet research here and could be missing something?) there is a manual shifter.

I stand by my assertion that touchscreens are terrible and double down that the above setup is not good haptics compared to a stalk, but what we’re looking at with Chao’s death isn’t a lethal design flaw but the intersection of poor design choices with inattention…possibly intersecting with other features like the driver’s condition or Tesla’s extreme fast acceleration.

It’s all dumb, but probably not liability-level dumb. Hopefully engineers at Tesla change their minds about turning the car into a screen-covered jelly bean.

better hope the screen doesn’t go out or freeze up/crash while you’re driving. That would be… bad.

this had very little to do with what made the vehicle go (electric vs gasoline)

That’s news to me…actually a bunch of car stuff is new to me, I’m not really into them…but yeesh that doesn’t sound good.

I’ve got a Toyota hybrid where all the important stuff is stems and buttons around the steering wheel, and I’m really glad none of the important functions have been switched to center screen…it’s useful but distracting.

that’s awfully complicated for a public who has to be reminded to shift into park else the key wont come out, or press the brake before you can shift into gear. those controls came about for a reason.

we’ve been thinking about cars a certain way for a very long time

even managing simple - non standard things has not always been easy

gas on the right, brake on the left - mostly standard (yes in the US)
how about lights - high, low, on off - not so standard
wipers? rear (windshield) wiper? - could be many places.
a/c controls
on and on

drive into a sudden blinding rainstorm and tell me 3 seconds of no wipers while you’re distracted hunting around isn’t a fundamental safety issue.

get in a strange car you’re torn between i know how this works so lets go versus maybe i should take a minute or two and identify where stuff is at…

people are now driving ‘vehicles’ that are less machine and more computer. and they’ve only been doing it for a short time.

maybe some some recent design enhancements are clever
i have no idea. my car’s a 2005
but people arent ready for clever engineering.
the number of accidents and deaths over time shows we can hardly manage the basics.

and driving a tesla accident free for a year isn’t a test if you havent been challenged in multiple stressful situations.

how many people voluntarily take better driving or motorcycling courses? there’s so much you can learn and hopefully never need.

too much of this is just ‘alien’ when it comes up against 50+ years of rote thinking a particular way and reacting mostly ‘automatically’.

now add panic to that

If you haven’t driven in a country where they drive on the left, you might not know this is true for RHD as well as LHD.

This article gives a great overview of why astronomers are convinced that the universe is full of invisible “dark matter.”

Katie Mack’s answers to the replies are also fabulous: a primer on how science works, and the difference between a personal hunch and a theory grounded in evidence.

@astrokatie.com

A while back I wrote about dark matter and why astronomers consider it to be an essential ingredient in the universe even though we don’t yet know what it’s made of. It’s popular to claim it can’t exist just because we don’t directly see it but that misunderstands how we discover things in physics!

We’ve made a map of dark matter but still don’t know what it is, and that’s okay

Katie Mack’s science thread is still going on Bluesky…

I am really getting to love the Biden-Harris HQ twitter feed. They were ripping the Hur meeting today with videos almost in real-time. Now we get this, in MTG’s district in Georgia, funded by the DNC (they appaently have several of these in the state up just before Trump gave a speech).

If I were starting over with LGF I’d design all our config files to use JSON. Maybe JSON-C.

Years ago I was a little skeptical about JSON but it’s proven to be a really good, economical way to encode key/value data.

I’m a little punchy this afternoon because I’ve been working with converting text encodings from UTF-16 to UTF-8 and back, which means dealing with typed arrays and ArrayBuffer objects. That shit gets deep.

Israel, as an established country with treaties and obligations, would be suicidal to break an international agreement, especially one brokered by an increasingly exasperated United States. (The supposed “hot mic” moment at the SOTU was anything but; it was a thinly veiled message to Bibi to straighten up and fly right, or else.) Not that simple. Prior to the age of majority (18 in the US barring a court order) children can’t enter into legally binding contracts or do a whole host of other things. A kid screws up, the parents are often on the hook. The state needs to defer to parents outside of cases of abuse or medical necessity, unless the state is willing to take over the care of the child.
