2024 Total Solar Eclipse: Through the Eyes of NASA (Telescope Feed)

Science • Views: 12,696

Watch a telescope feed of a total solar eclipse moving across North America on April 8, 2024, traveling through Mexico, across the United States from Texas to Maine, and exiting North America along Canada’s coast. Weather permitting, we will provide live views of the eclipse from several locations across the eclipse path, including showing the partially eclipsed Sun in different wavelengths of light.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and briefly covers the full disk of the Sun. This reveals the Sun’s wispy, white outer atmosphere, called the corona. Weather permitting, people throughout most of North and Central America, including all of the contiguous United States, will be able to view at least a partial solar eclipse.

These telescope feeds are provided courtesy of our partners and collaborators. A full list of the telescope locations and providers is coming soon.

It’s barely better than naked-eye, so any sky crud or light spill will mean you need a scope or binos on your posted coordinates.

Is there a live stream that just shows the eclipse without a bunch of talking heads waring us every 3 minutes to wear our glasses when looking at the sun? It’s worse that trying to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade narrated by the latest TV sitcom actors of whatever network is showing it.

We hit our max in Phoenix, 64%. Its darker, and pretty cool, that big sunspot has been around for a few weeks, easily seen with eclipse glasses. I used to have a solar filter for my old telescope, don’t have one for the new (30 year old) scope.

The really incredible part of a solar eclipse is that the moon is exactly the right distance from Earth to perfectly block out the sun in an eclipse.

A cosmic coincidence.

21
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Apr 8, 2024 • 11:33:23am

Irradiance here got down to 37%.

But it is barely noticeable outside. Talked to a neighbor outside while she was doing something… and it seemed everyone barely noticed.

A 62% coverage is noticeable but one has to be aware of what is happening to compare the before and after.

Previous eclipse here covered more and it was more noticeable.

Tried making a pinhole camera but it did not work.

But on the southside is an Acacia tree, the leaves being close together the shade is usually speckled.

When these eclipses happen the speckles in the shade change shape - noticed this last time. I suspect the leaves are making the equivalent of pinhole cameras, being tightly packed.

A cosmic coincidence.

Only for this period of the Earth-Moon relationship. The Moon used to be closer to the Earth (initially 14,000 miles about 4.4 billion years ago) and eventually, over time there will be no more full eclipses as the Moon moves outward over time.

So I was watching the talking heads discussing the coincidence of the moon exactly matching the sun’s diameter when view from earth. One of the hosts asks “what are the odds?” Well, for us earther’s, 100% is what I’d guess. We don’t have a lot of data beyond that.

It’s kind of cool listening to the crowds at the different sites as totality occurs. It starts with cheers and quickly dies down while everyone is digesting the amazingnous of what they’re witnessing. It’s exactly the same reaction I experienced at the 2017 eclipse. It’s so out of phase with previous experiences. That is then followed by more cheers when the sun reappears followed by a mass exodus to get on the road home before the crowd.

It was wild here. It was mostly cloudy. The sun would occasionally peak through, and then there were a couple of clear spots. Right before totality, thick clouds were crossing between us and I was thinking we were done. But totality hit, and the clouds just disappeared.

Was rainy and heavy cloud here south of Rochester, NY.

And then it went from “Rainy day with heavy overcast” dark to complete dark in about 90 seconds. And we were high enough up on the east side of a wide river valley to see a sort of “sun rise in the west” as the shadow receded from the west side of the valley and crossed it.

Here’s the question that needs to be asked:

If Congress passed a national ban on abortion, would you sign it?

The really incredible part of a solar eclipse is that the moon is exactly the right distance from Earth to perfectly block out the sun in an eclipse.

A cosmic coincidence.

It occurred to me the other day that ancient astronomy would likely have gotten a much slower start without the spectacular solar (and lunar) eclipses to spark interest.

My favorite Lunar eclipse happened when I was about 13 or 14…I was at the Redding Rodeo and there was a full moon and a full lunar eclipse…distracted me from some of the barrel races and shit…but it was cool. Moon was low in the sky so huge as the earth shadow crossed over it.

I think he might have actually pissed off a lot of his supporters with his grand compromise statement today. He’s had something like a dozen posts today since the video(s) on truth and all about abortion (and attacking Lindsey Graham, which, fuck him). Trying to play the “this is what you wanted” game with conservatives when it was, in fact, not what they actually wanted, is not going well for him.

A bunch of anti-abortion mad MAGATs noticing that Trump is a total waffle on the issue will not get them to vote for Biden. Heck, I doubt it will even get them to not vote for Trump. And the rest of the GOP ranks below Trump are full of religious nuts who want a nationwide ban.

I was completing a transaction at Guitar Center a few weeks back, and while waiting for the register to actually do something, I started idly staring at the guitars on the wall behind the clerk.

Late 70’s Strat for $12,000 and a Tele (forget what year) for $17,000.

I’d like to think that playing one of those would somehow coax unseen talent out of me, like Robert Johnson at the crossroads. In reality, it would be the musical equivalent of me getting behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce and immediately ramming it into the side of a fertilizer silo.

Meta couldn’t have a fully automated system that aggressive, every site not whitelisted would be constantly banned. Someone had to manually confirm banning 2nd & 3rd order links.

Tolkien News (To Me, Anyway):

“…In 1970, United Artists had the rights to film The Lord of the Rings, and had a working relationship with director John Boorman who was currently filming Leo the Last for them. Boorman’s script never got the green light and the rights eventually were sold on to Saul Zaentz. Many of us are aware of the copy of the script that is held at Marquette, and likely have all breathed many sighs of relief that is never got filmed - it strays far from the books, for example adding a sex scene between Frodo and Galadriel.
…….

We’re not done working through this archive, either. There are a lot more letters that are quite interesting - Robert Plant’s agent wrote to Boorman on the Led Zeppelin singer’s behalf pitching him for an elf role!

We are on the E 75% line, so the effects were mild. There was a definite dimming of the sky. The shadows of wires and poles are definitely fringed/doubled. Took the dog around the block, and he didn’t seem to notice anything. There were a couple families on their driveways with glasses.

94% here. Slight dimming but the main effects were the increase in wind accompanied by a significant drop in temperature. Wearing the glasses, fascinating watching the moon slowly cover most of the sun. Must have been terrifying to primitive societies to have the sun suddenly vanish in midday and put them into night.

This was supposed to be a reply to Mike Masnick who said that people don’t know how automatic blocking works. I don’t know, it’s true, but no one seems to be even trying to explain how this exploded as it did

I do know how automatic blocking works. I have systems here at LGF that can do it. And a lot of the arguments Mike Masnick and others made are very plausible and make sense.

But there are elements of this case that seem extreme to me. Meta didn’t simply ban that original link from being posted, they put up a complete ban of ALL links from all the sites that posted it, LGF among them, across their entire network of more than a billion users, even going back 15 years in one case I know of to delete a post at Facebook. The use of that global “nuclear option” seems to me to be way out of balance, and is more like the kind of thing a person who’s BIG MAD would do.

But it’s all speculation, really. None of us knows, or probably ever will know, exactly what went down here, and although I still am not satisfied this wasn’t intentional, I don’t really want to argue about speculation with folks who think they know exactly what happened, when they don’t know either.
