Since I posted yesterday about Meta/Threads/Facebook/Instawhatever suddenly blocking Little Green Footballs from their entire network, it’s only fair to also note that today, we’ve been un-canceled.

My exchange with Meta’s Adam Mosseri on Bluesky:

That was yesterday. Today:

The problem is still the same problem as it’s always been: we don’t tax billionaires nearly enough to make up for the harm they do.

We make so many big big planes with so many many bolts, you have to expect things to fall off occasionally.

Look, the probability of a door flying off in mid-flight is very, very low. I mean, it could happen, and that would be terrible, but do we really want to spend an extra five seconds double-checking those bolts when it could cost us time and our shareholders money?

Besides, we already RIFed the old guys who knew about that shit and actually gave a damn that it was done right.

I have a 2021 Toyota Rav4 and we get 40 MPG and I have a very heavy foot. The Rav4 hybrid also has more snap and better handling than the gas only model.

When energized, your hybrid’s ~50 HP electric motor instantly kicks in with full torque and HP to augment the gas engine power output faster than a turbo can spool up to maximum boost.

My take on this issue with FB and LGF: It’s not that Zuck is Musk-lite out to target those who disagree with him but that he’s McDonnell Douglas and that the only thing that matters to him is keeping costs as low as possible. Harming innocent bystanders is irrelevant unless it turns out to cost him money. And having competent humans involved in personally evaluating statements is a definite cost that he plans on avoiding at every step unless forced by some outside authority or bad press to do otherwise. He would be pleased if there were a perfect algorithm to handle all this — but there isn’t.

I also wonder if reports by bad actors to FB alleging malfeasance by LGF (or others) could overwhelm the system and cause this kind of reaction by FB. After all, it’s not as though FB will be spending any money investigating such allegations.

COVID test can be negative for a few days before it finally becomes positive — or you don’t have COVID — either is possible. For most of us COVID is no different from the flu or a cold. My sister didn’t take paxlovid, and felt ill only for the first couple days. For most who are vaccinated it’s probably not a major issue any longer.

* Xóchitl Gálvez, former mayor of Miguel Hidalgo, candidate of Frente Amplio por México, a coalition consisting of PAN, PRI and PRD. (I never thought I’d see these three parties together.)
* Jorge Álvarez Máynez, a federal deputy, representing the Movimiento Ciudadano party.

The race is considered to be between Sheinbaum and Gálvez, with Sheinbaum holding a commanding lead in polling, but we all know how accurate that is!!!

I will watch to practice mi español. I would suggest interested parties keep an eye on the Mexican election, which is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Apparently some nutbar Catholic deposed (as of 2023) bishop (Strickland, former bishop of Tyler, Texas) is supposed to offer Mass during totality, presumably to keep the demons away. I’m thinking the educated clerics of the Middle Ages understood eclipses better than these dingbats.

This .mx debate is getting mean. Xóchitl Gálvez accused Claudia Sheinbam of being “una mujer fría y sin corazón” (a cold woman without heart). Also, Gálvez seems to believe that the Mexican health system can be fixed by using the blockchain. That’s just nuts.

Isn’t the problem with windows in parallels on an m3 that it needs to be the ARM version of windows, and most of the applications you would want to run windows for don’t have ARM versions yet? I expect that to change with the new Qualcomm pc processors but it will be a while.

re: #122 Eclectic Cyborg

No. The story there is that a Major thought he saw, via some grainy ass nighttime drone video, one dude with a gun get into one of the cars. His Colonel OK’d the strike and their team then methodically murdered the WCK team one car after another.

But both the AI targeting systems and the specific criminal officers responsible for the WCK attack are products of a culture within the IDF that simply doesn’t view Palestinians as human beings. If it did those three shirtless hostages holding a white flag wouldn’t have been shot, with the final wounded hostage stalked into a building and murdered while he begged for his life in fluent Hebrew. The blind spot is just that huge.

Xóchitl Gálvez was frankly dog whistling at the end when she was giving her “why you should vote for me” speech. Basically, she was saying that people should vote for her because she’s indigenous Mexican. This was a veiled slam at Claudia Sheinbaum, whose Jewish grandparents (both sides) emigrated to Mexico in the first half of the 20th century.

You know, argue your positions, but don’t argue your ethnicity. Sheinbaum is as Mexican as Gálvez is. /speaking as un estadounidoense, not voting in the election, just disgusted.

See the poem, “Nuns Fret Not”. A favorite of my husband’s.

Nuns Fret Not at Their Convent’s Narrow Room
William Wordsworth

Nuns fret not at their convent’s narrow room;
And hermits are contented with their cells;
And students with their pensive citadels;
Maids at the wheel, the weaver at his loom,
Sit blithe and happy; bees that soar for bloom,
High as the highest Peak of Furness-fells,
Will murmur by the hour in foxglove bells:
In truth the prison, into which we doom
Ourselves, no prison is: and hence for me,
In sundry moods, ‘twas pastime to be bound
Within the Sonnet’s scanty plot of ground;
Pleased if some Souls (for such there needs must be)
Who have felt the weight of too much liberty,
Should find brief solace there, as I have found.

If there hasn’t been a book written yet, then there should be one about all the scenes and ad-libs that came about because the cast and crew were sitting around waiting on the director or another actor to show up and ended up chatting.

One example I remember: The whole shawarma post-credits scene in The Avengers happened because RDJ ad-libbed the line, one of the producers decided that it was a good way to “humanize” the characters, so they called the cast back together just to shoot this one scene of them snacking on shawarma after a major battle.

The hedge funds don’t actually want to be in the business of owning single-family homes and renting them out. That’s just an interim method of financing until the REAL plan kicks into gear.

There are similar stories from 2020.

This use of water by data centers is getting more attention as climate change takes a bigger bite out of fresh water supplies.

AI is expected to demand even more water for cooling.

This is a classic case of economics: demand for one item has consequences in another sector of the economy.

This problem also underlies the drive to more efficient integrated circuits. And that’s why Apple took the lead with their M series chips which use much less energy than the Intel chips.

It also illustrates that although a Free Market approach is good at balancing supply and demand while directing capital flows into areas where they are most beneficial, the Free Market is a terrible way to manage resources & infrastructure.

As the real estate people say, “Population, population, population.” In 2000 the population of the US was 282 million people, today it’s over 340 million people. That’s another 60 million folks looking for their own little piece of heaven on earth, a free-standing two-storey new-build with ensuites in all bedrooms and a four-car garage in a “good” neighbourhood close to schools, shops, the interstate on-ramp etc. As Samuel Clemens was reputed to have said when asked about investments, “Buy land son, they’re not making it any more.”

So Trump now says abortion should be left up to the states…and now the Cult Of The Fetus is throwing a fit over that…

Top anti-abortion activists are upset with former President Donald Trump this morning.

The former president was instrumental to the fall of Roe v. Wade, having appointed three of the Supreme Court justices who gave the green light for states to enact total bans on abortion. But that wasn’t enough for many in the anti-abortion movement, and for weeks speculation has persisted over whether Trump would endorse some sort of federal ban on the procedure.

On Monday, Trump finally broke his silence and declined to do so, saying that, “The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land.” While Trump did not endorse a national abortion ban, in the same video he bragged about being responsible for ending Roe v. Wade and effectively endorsed every total ban that has been passed at the state level.

Nevertheless, the Susan B. Anthony List, one of the largest anti-abortion groups in the United States, came out with a statement slamming the former president.

“We are deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position,” said SBA President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Unborn children and their mothers deserve national protections and national advocacy from the brutality of the abortion industry … saying the issue is ‘back to the states’ cedes the national debate to the Democrats who are working relentlessly to enact legislation mandating abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy. If successful, they will wipe out states’ rights.”

SBA wasn’t alone — various other hardliners expressed their displeasure too. “I’m not sure a major candidate has ever produced a worse statement on Life than the one I just watched,” posted Doug Stafford, a senior strategist for Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). And Darrell B. Harrison of the Arizona Redeemer Bible Church wrote, “The truth is that when it comes to the murder of unborn image-bearers of God … the Republican Party is becoming increasingly indistinguishable from the Democrat [sic] Party.”

They need to calm down and listen to what’s in his heart, not what he says.

In his heart, he wants abortion banned everywhere in America - once he wins the election.

Until then, they need to keep a low profile.

Fortunatlely, one of them is an unprinipled braggart and the other side is made up of fundamentalist absolutist idealists.

Trump fucking doesn’t care about abortion, only getting the votes of antiabortion extremists who caught the bus by getting Roe overturned with his extremist judicial nominations (courtesy of McConnell gaming the nomination process to freeze out Obama after RBG passed away). They’re pushing towards a nationwide ban, regardless of the posturing here. Everyone knows it, including Trump, which is why Trump’s pretzel logic is even more pretzel-y to try and spin this as a states’ rights issue, when the extremists want a nationwide ban, and they also see how disastrous that is at the polls.

More than that, Trump claims that what the states decide should be the law of the land.

Hey motherfucker, we had the law of the land - Roe. Everyone had to abide by this because the states had everything from total bans to allowing abortions into late term. Casey gave further restrictions and limitations, but it was still nationwide.

Now, right wing extremists want to take a state’s right to impose a ban to expand it nationally with fugitive women laws that would criminalize seeking abortions in states that still protect the right under their own laws. This is the mess Trump’s initiated, and he owns the mess, and the harms to all women.

Because this isn’t just about abortion.

These Christian fascists want to ban reproductive rights for all women.

They want to ban IVF, which accounts for about 3% of all live births in the US annually.

They want to ban contraceptive rights/freedoms. That affects all women.

This is the Christian fascist misogynistic worldview Trump and GOP wants, and it violates the 1A and individual rights to their own bodily autonomy.

A lot of that is because more and more people are moving cities. Here in DFW, we are adding about 150,000 people a year. Some of them are from other states, but large portion of them are from small towns here in Texas that are shrinking.

The amount of land suitable and convenient for construction of dwellings, especially the ones most in demand, has not increased at all. That’s what has driven the 500% increase on house prices in the US and elsewhere.

There’s no problem building houses at year 2000 prices but you’d have to stack them up in a storage yard somewhere. Until there’s a plot of land with services, a road etc. to put one on they’re not going to be sold to anyone and the land is the expensive part, not the house.

This problem also underlies the drive to more efficient integrated circuits. And that’s why Apple took the lead with their M series chips which use much less energy than the Intel chips.

Goodyear, AZ, has a Microsoft data center that is draining Arizona water. Apparently it’s guaranteed 56 million gallons of drinking water to run the damn place.

Mesa, AZ (where I live) guaranteed 1 million gallons of water a day to Google to get a data center. Google claims it’s going to use “air cooling”, but (per the article above), that only works when the air temp is below 85F. Guess what? It’s going to be in the 90s this week.

NSA built a massive data center just outside Salt Lake City back that opened in 2014. At that time it was projected to consume 1.7 million gallons of water per day. In addition, it required 65 megawatt of electricity per year. Now, Utah, and most of the west, had been in a severe drought for the last 5 to 10 years. I’m curious if there has been any controversy regarding this facility, it’s needs, and the surrounding community. I’ pretty sure any investigation would halted based on national security claims.

It’s a little cloudy here at the edge of totality but the clouds themselves are small and scattered so I am guardedly optimistic that we will get a good view of the eclipse. No sign of the widely hoped for feared locust swarm of free spending ravenous tourists. Maybe they heard about the clouds and lit out for Arkansas.

My guess is that Knight’s billionaire owner was hoping to do a flim flam to give Trump millions in support to keep going in his campaign, but this will likely take down his insurance company with its own set of financial crimes/malfeasance.

The moment you scrutinize any of Trump’s financial actions, they show just how shady he is. The bonding is no different, even though it has to meet strict requirements under NYS law.

It’s clear Trump’s insurer can’t meet those requirements.

Jonathan Majors sentenced to probation, avoids jail time for assaulting ex-girlfriend

Judge Michael Gaffey also ordered Majors to complete a 52-week in-person batterer’s intervention program. He also has to continue with his mental health therapy.

Following the guilty verdict, Majors was immediately dropped by Marvel Studios, which had cast him as Kang the Conqueror, a role envisioned as the main villain in the entertainment empire’s movies and television shows for years to come.

The conviction stemmed from an altercation last March in which Majors’ then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari accused him of attacking her in the backseat of a chauffeured car, saying he hit her head with his open hand, twisted her arm behind her back and squeezed her middle finger until it fractured.

Majors claimed the 31-year-old British dancer was the aggressor, flying into a jealous rage after reading a text message from another woman on his phone. He maintained he was only trying to regain his phone and get away from Jabbari safely.

my guess is that we owe a large part of the disappearance of those sorts of recipes to Julia Child, who started teaching housewives how to really cook again. For instance, when I heat peas from a can, I drain the water off, throw the peas in a small skillet with a reasonable amount (a huge fucking amount) of butter that’s been in the pan until it stops bubbling, also a little bit of onion or shallot gets throw in, diced up, and then just a couple tablespoons of beef or chicken broth, whatever happens to be handy. Gets heated and shaken around in the skillet until the broth has all either been absorbed or reduced off. That’s probably the simplest recipe in her French cooking book, and it improves canned peas immeasurably.

As always, in his heart, he literally does NOT care about the issue. It’s only what gets him elected that matters. And eliminating abortion will keep his base happy. Of course if Democrats hold one House, he won’t be able to do that but, again, he doesn’t care. Wait — if the GOP takes the Senate and he’s elected, SCOTUS may very well outlaw abortion nationwide.

Again — Trump cares nothing about theocracy and limiting women’s rights in this area. He wants to be dictator and that’s all that matters to him. An atheistic “communist” regime like China or North Korea would suit him just fine as long as he’s the one in power.

He doesn’t even need Congress. Trump’s AG can declare that the Comstock Act prohibits the shipment of any materials to be used for an abortion, effectively banning abortion nationwide. There is a good chance that there are five votes on SCOTUS to affirm this interpretation.

Trump’s going Article 78 on the case - essentially suing Judge Merchan claiming that he’s somehow violated or exceeded his duties under the law, and seeking removal of the case to another New York jurisdiction.

I get what Trump thinks he can do using Article 78, but it shouldn’t work at all. He should get knocked down, and swiftly too, by the Appellate Division.

Trump can’t show that Merchan exceeded his duties under the law (equivalent to a writ of mandamus). Just because a judge rules against you doesn’t mean that the judge exceeded his duties under said law.

Trump can’t show a violation on jurisdiction. The crimes occurred in New York county, and there’s no basis for removal - he can still find an impartial jury.

Trump can’t show that a determination was made in violation of lawful procedure.

Finally, Trump can’t show where the determination was made without substantial evidence taken.

This is a longshot attempt to delay the trial, and shows that Trump’s lawyers are desperate to sling anything and everything at the judicial system in hopes of delaying the trial.

They can’t show Trump didn’t do the crimes. They aren’t saying Trump is innocent. They’re just left trying to claim some facet of the trial is bad for Trump and therefore should grind the trial to a halt until such time when Trump is back in power and can kill the criminal and civil legal actions against him.

Trump isn’t their leader. He panders to hopeless fuckups for their vote. This became clear when the goobers that support him rejected vaccines and couldn’t be steered into loving the vaccines that their leader promoted.

Trump’s support for vaccination was actually short lived and lukewarm, brought about by pressure from groups who were inimical to his interests, scientists and public health officials. It was completely inconsistent with the rest of his response to covid. The attempt to claim credit was a brief episode of opportunism, soon forgotten in his very public and sustained rush to embrace quackery and denial.

He backed down when his cult was outraged that he’d push “the jab” on them. They refused to follow his lead. He can only pass as their leader if he’s where they already wanted to go. He makes them bolder, and worse to other people, but his ability to lead them is very limited.

Maurice LaMarche does the voice of Orson Welles (and others, including The Brain). In this scene from Ed Wood, Vincent D’onofrio played Welles, and LaMarche dubbed his voice to make it work as well as it did.

The IDF releases footage from the interrogation of the spokesman for the political wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza, in which he admits that the terror group tried to hide the fact that one of its rockets struck Al-Ahli Arab Hospital at the beginning of the war, as well as saying that terror operatives use “all hospitals in the Gaza Strip.”
Tarek Abu Shaluf was among 500 terror operatives captured by the IDF at Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital last month, the military says.
The IDF says Abu Shaluf “advanced acts of incitement and propaganda from within the Shifa Hospital, and testified to the use of the compound and medical equipment for terror purposes.”
In the video, Abu Shaluf tells an interrogator of the Military Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 504 that the blast at Al-Ahli hospital (which he refers to by the local name of “Mamadani Hospital”) was “a local rocket, we said it was Israeli.”
Israel accused Islamic Jihad of firing the rocket which fell short and hit the hospital in late October, reportedly killing dozens of people, hours after Hamas officials falsely blamed an Israeli strike, a claim that was widely reported by international media outlets.
“To erase this story, the movement (Islamic Jihad) made some moves, it made up a story that the rocket belonged to the occupation (Israel) and that the target was the [hospital] building,” Abu Shalaf says.
Asked by the interrogator which hospitals Islamic Jihad and Hamas use in Gaza, Abu Shalaf says “All of the hospitals.”
“Because there is internet there 24 hours, there is electricity 24 hours,” he says, explaining that when terror groups use the hospitals, they occupy a room or two in each ward, without needing to close an entire department.
Abu Shaluf in his interrogation also details the use of ambulances by terror operatives at the hospitals.

as long as you’re using tinfoil, it’s worth pointing out that prisoners under coercion are likely to say anything their interrogators want to hear.

Israel’s fuckups in the lead-up to Oct 7, during, and since (killing escaped hostages, the WCK thing)… makes me trust them a lot less than I did a year ago.

re: #360 goddamnedfrank

My guess is that Trump’s lawyers are citing to Siegel’s NY Practice (aka the bible for NY civil practice) page 870 (in my version, which albeit is old and worn), Section 557 - which states:

While the Article 78 proceeding has occasional uses against other than administrative agencies - it is available even against judges in certain instances - the administrative agency is its primary target.

My guess is he’s trying to target the rulings on the gag order, venue in NY county, and others, as somehow prejudicial against Trump’s ability to get a fair trial (which is BS, but that’s where we are).

I wonder too if the statute of limitation has run on some of the questions on venue (changing from NY county to another jurisdiction, for instance).

I was trying to photograph the eclipse with my DSLR and a 100-400 zoom lenses. The problem is that, its a heavy lens and hard to hand hold, even with stabilization on. On my tripod, I have to track the sun manually which means I have to free up the ball head, move the camera, try and relocate the sun, lock the ball head and take the picture. It’s the relocation part that is tough when the lens is at 400. All the while, I’m in manual focus so I need to keep from bumping the focus ring. Add in avoiding looking at the sun while using the camera and having to look through the viewfinder with my left eye since my right eye’s vision has gone to shit. Too much trouble especially since the eclipse is going to max out at 30% here. Still, it’s pretty cool watching through my solar glasses.
