An Excellent Episode of PBS Nova: Decoding the Universe: Cosmos (Full Documentary)

Science • Views: 11,842

How big is the universe? If it began with the Big Bang, will it also have an end? Is there life beyond our planet? Questions like these inspired the launch of Voyager I in 1977 and have driven innovative space research and exploration ever since. Trace ground-breaking discoveries that have transformed our picture of the universe, from an age when we knew of no planets beyond our solar system, to today, when we have evidence of thousands and estimate trillions more. And follow the teams trying to solve two of the biggest mysteries in cosmology today: What are dark matter and dark energy?

I like her point 4 (massive protests) but how is that going to work when the Supreme Court is basically fenced off from all of us, and yes, you will be arrested for attempting to protest on the steps of the Supreme Court?

I am *really* against protesting in front of people’s homes (because it is SUPER unnerving, I know this from personal experience), but given that the Supreme Court doesn’t want protests in front of its workplace, maybe taking the protests to in front of Alito’s (and Thomas’) home should be on the table.

Maybe it’s just time to walk up to the fence in front of the Supreme Court, push it down, reclaim the space actually outside the Court building for the people, and let Alito, Thomas and the other Justices know that we’re tired of their bullshit.

Nah. Sometime stereotypes exist for a reason. The post-war generation has a predilection to blame the people they raised. It’s not only ‘Merikans.

I’m so old I remember when it were conservatives who clamoured to “rein” in the Supreme Court.

But that was because of such things as ruling to desegregate schools and businesses, and agreeing women have rights over their own bodies and lives.

It’s not overreach when the court simply affirms a conservative’s natural right to grasp power.

re: #72 Shiplord Kirel: From behind wingnut lines

Earlier today:

The right picture had Jesus in it, it’s been doctored. Metaxas has blocked me since 2016 because I pointed out (along with many other people) that a quotation from Dietrich Bonhoeffer that he kept posting was a fake. The quote was to stir people to vote for DJT. Metaxas could get away with it because he was considered an “expert” on Bonhoeffer, as he’d written a biography for the Evangelical crowd. Actual Bonhoeffer scholars considered it awful, but were nice about their criticism. Me, I just looked at the “works cited” and didn’t even see that he’d consulted the Bonhoeffer Werke in English (why yes, that exists, you can purchase those from Fortress Press), and decided it was a flaming county-wide tire fire.

Ever since he published his Bonhoeffer “biography,” Metaxas has absolutely slipped into utter Trump worship. During the “RNC” in DC in 2020, he sucker-punched an anti-Trump bicyclist. And of course he’s been all over “fake elections.” Whatta guy.

ETA: It’s unclear if Jesus was ever convicted of anything. I mean, it was the Roman procurator and he didn’t have to follow anything like the rule of law. If he thought Jesus (or anyone else) was a pain in the ass and a threat to his control of Judea, he’d execute them. And in fact, scholars STILL disagree on why Jesus was executed, even today. Because it’s unclear as hell.

A newer, faster way to create a cartel. (The Globe and Mail, four hours ago)

Algorithms are raising prices for everything. This must stop

Sometimes GasBuddy feels like a real friend. It’s a mobile app and website that tracks crowd-sourced prices of gas in Canada and the United States so you can quickly figure out where to find the cheapest gas in your neighbourhood. But imagine if gas stations are using GasBuddy to monitor each other in real time. Then it’s a collusion mechanism, not a consumer tool.

Which brings me to a concerning new phenomenon.

For long, we’ve had algorithmic pricing, which is a practice that automatically sets the price of an item for sale in a manner that maximizes profits. It is also sometimes referred to as “dynamic” pricing, and basically speaks to the near-constant microcalibration of prices that we see online, usually based on demand.

Now the use of algorithms is being taken up a notch. In contrast to what we’re used to seeing, algorithmic collusion refers to a situation where competitors use algorithms in deeper and more expansive ways, such as constantly monitoring competitors’ prices and then adjusting their own.

Newer, faster, and legal. And I doubt, with the current hyper-focus on the culture war and performative insanity from Republicans, that will change any time soon. Hell, they’ll probably enshrine its legality as soon as any Democrat makes noises about wanting to end the practice.
