Amputations and blindings seem to be quite acceptable in some places …

But those are dark places indeed …

Sad in that I sincerely doubt she really will feel any better if she blinds him. Sure it will be reciprocal revenge for her injury but will it take away her hurt, or will she eventually just feel even worse for inflicting such hurt on another herself?

Some things in life you just have to write off and put them behind you no matter how attractive personal retribution seems. That is perhaps the crucial difference between a civilized society of laws and barbaric anarchy. Of course in most developed countries you would be able to count on a functional criminal justice system to seek appropriate retribution on your behalf via incarceration or even execution.

That does not seem to be the case in Iran currently, so perhaps my musings have no merit in this case, if it is the only penalty she can see exacted against him then perhaps she has no choice but to seek it.

Sigh… :(

I actually recall that in Iran the injured party, or their family, has a fair amount of influence over what kind of punishment the court imposes.

This is unreal.

I can’t say I really pity the man, but I can’t imagine living under such a barbaric judicial system. The US may not be perfect, but I’d rather be here than anywhere else.

The culprit’s family offered her their home as payment which she could accept in lieu of punishment. But this is Sharia in action. I think she considers her life and marriage prospects ruined. My husband showed me her before and after pictures, it was tragic. She was really beautiful and even with plastic surgery, they are not going to be able to restore her very much as well as reverse the blindness.

According to this update, your guess is right on the money:

Much of the public outcry in Iranian media, news websites, and blogs, surrounds the Iranian legal system, which produces such verdicts by practising an ‘eye for an eye’ approach to justice…These principles effectively offer victims of violent crime two legal choices, forgiveness or qesas, analogous retribution. “Bahrami must sit in the place of the judge and either forgive her attacker or take revenge” says Asieh Amini, an Iranian women’s rights activist living in Europe. “The legal system pushes her into a dead-end, and it’s really the law that’s deficient here.”

Highly recommend reading the whole thing; it offers a great deal of insight into this tragic case (by the way, the eye-for-eye sentence is, as far as I know, postponed for now)
