It's very difficult to report on legal findings, other than the bare bones law, the vote, the majority opinion, the minority opinion. Much depends on the initial briefs filed, which precedents are cited, and how well the attorney answers questions posed by the justices, and so on.

Many people act like judges rule simply as a reflection of their political beliefs. This is certainly the case when Senators add their input into the judiciary. However, I think the judges should get a little bit of credit for doing their jobs properly.

If the decision works out poorly, the Arizona legislature will have to rewrite the law. This is an ongoing process in our entire legal system.

It's these bits that really disturb me in light of the Citizens United ruling (not to mention the current trajectory of the Right/GOP):

To justify the result in Arizona Free Enterprise Club, Roberts was forced to create a new right — the right to speak without response. Although he paints trigger funds as providing a competitive advantage to publicly funded candidates vis-à-vis their privately funded counterparts, this does not accord with political reality. In fact, the candidate who agrees to rely solely on public funds simultaneously agrees to shoulder the ultimate disadvantage; when her public funds are capped, any well-endowed, privately financed adversary will just keep going.

I guess we have no choice but to wait and see how it pans out.

I hear you. I just see the right wing as becoming increasingly irrelevant. More vocal, no doubt. It's possible that President Obama could lose the next election--because of the economy (however, I think the elected Republicans are also going the get a whoopin'). But I'm expecting the right wing to have their ass handed to them. You are correct though, we just have to wait and see.

To paraphrase the decision, all animals are equal but rich animals are more equal than others.

That's all it's about to this court.
