With a tweak of the curriculum, and a choice to write in the form of a novel rather than the form of an 18th century positivist—‘writer’ would be a reasonable name for the field. And the present ‘writers’ could be called ‘depressing nihilists’. That way everyone’s clear.

On the subject of writing, I defer to you.

Seriously.

I read for a bit, and then skimmed.

If philosophy is almost unknown to the public at large it is because it has become like all fields of expertise; locked inside its profession and sealed away from the world by hermetic dialect. After two centuries the hand of Immanuel Kant still holds philosophy by the throat.

If philosophy wishes to become relevant again it has to return to its roots. Its roots in Athens where a nasty old man wandered the city pestering people endlessly about what they thought and why. Asking questions that made them uncomfortable. They murdered him for it eventually.

Colin McGinn is a great no-nonsense philosopher, (or onticist to be absolutely correct). His communication is an object lesson in clarity. Here he is talking about the self-sufficience of morality and the meaning of human life:

Well if you are talking about the ‘post-modern’ school of philosophy then I agree with you. However philosophy is much bigger than that. With science taking us to the big bang and beyond, and into the brain where consciousness is generated, philosophy is if anything more relevant than ever.

On that I quite agree.

Last I checked, the throat grabbers were in the tradition of the British Empiricists, and Wittgenstein was the flavor of the decade.

The German Idealists have become a historical curiosity.
