Kudos. I saw this then the RW exploit, and I flinched, chose not to Page it. I just made a comment in a thread. My first sources were totally new to me too. That image is just awful. Worst Cake Ever.

This has to be the weirdest story of the day. This is me, shaking my head.

WTF was that?!?

From the article-If this performance art were an Ikea bedroom set, it would be the Whatderfük collection.

LMFAO

The “artist” who created this horror is a white man (wearing blackface for the “performance”)! The lame excuse that it’s supposed to be about FGM as practiced in Africa, just makes it all the more racist—as in “primitive Africans perform this mutiliation of women, but educated cultured Europeans do not.”

i believe the artist is black and that doesn’t make the cake any less horrific. actually i think it makes it more horrific.

I’ve seen speculation that the actual artwork wasn’t the cake, it was the photos and video of the Secretary of Culture and others cutting the cake.

(And as a Swede, I’m appalled at the fact that the Secretary of Culture participated. She’s defending herself by saying that art should be allowed to shock. But that doesn’t explain why she cut the cake.)

A good read (translated from Swedish with Google Translate) with some speculation about what actually was the artwork.

Well here’s the thing about “white colonial guilt”, FGM is not an atrocity that was committed by the “white colonialist” but by the Africans themselves. Or is the “white colonialist” also to blame for FGM because they did not oppose it more aggressively, the way the British in India wiped out suti?

There’s been a lot of art over the years about FGM. I highly recommend Sia Amma’s one-woman play, “In Search of My Clitoris”.

Somehow this is not quite working for me. For one thing, the body does not seem to be that of a young girl before marriage. For another, there’s a guy in blackface, and it’s a red velvet cake made to look like a woman’s body, that you cut into, and they’re all grinning like this is beautiful or clever or SOMETHING.

Also, that face. WTF?

Oh, come on! How bad could it be?

…um, wow…

F*** reading the article. Just look at the picture. If someone has to explain to you whats wrong with it, then you are a f***ing moron. No exceptions. No excuses. Next case.

I don’t think this was ever about FGM.
That was what the artist said it was about, but it looks like he said so to get the people to cut the cake so that he would get the photos and the video.
Consider this, his earlier work has been about racism, xenophobia, and slavery.
Then look at the photos again.
This isn’t about FGM.

re: #5 Learned Mother of Zion

The excuse isn’t that it’s about FGM, but about neocolonialism— about predatory practices of the colonies.

I think it’s in bad taste, but that’s about all. It’s weird, but it’s not any worse than R. Crumb’s stuff, to me.
