What a complicated issue. Hard to cover in one essay. You could help me (and probably others) get a grasp on it with a good link to something about Lee vs Macon, and maybe a link to Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu’s book (at Amazon or somewhere). I don’t know whether your Yahoo page would let you do that, but you could certainly do it here. Most of the links I saw about Lee vs Macon were to school district websites. Nothing at Wikipedia.

Thanks for posting this.

P.S. Your tags are kind of screwy. You’re not stuck with the ‘suggested tags’. You can type your own in the box. When you end it with a comma, it turns into a tag.

This article reminds me. When I was 14, I attended a school in Des Moines, IA that catered to special needs children. While not physically or mentally disabled, I had been picked on a lot in elementary school for having Asperger’s Syndrome and felt that a different learning environment would benefit my education.

But during the time I attended, I noticed a lot of my black male classmates being locked into a room upstairs (“shut-out”) by teachers for being too “disruptive” in class. This was a public school. And it happened in 1999-2000, not the 1950s.

I hope this isn’t taken wrong, but as a landlord for many years, including section 8 families, I have seen the interaction in many (not all) such homes between parents and young children. Screaming, cursing and yelling and slapping are the norm in too many homes. It is hardly strange that this is reflected in school behavior.

Suggesting that schools can change this is naive.
