Climate Change Could Basically Make the Middle East Uninhabitable, and Some Islamophobes Are Gleeful
It turns out that in spite of claims to the contrary by climate change deniers like the “Friends of Science,” not only is climate change real, but it is already having devastating results and will most likely have even worse outcomes in the future. According to Hugh Naylor at the Washington Post,
BAGHDAD — Record-shattering temperatures this summer have scorched countries from Morocco to Saudi Arabia and beyond, as climate experts warn that the severe weather could be a harbinger of worse to come.
In coming decades, U.N. officials and climate scientists predict that the mushrooming populations of the Middle East and North Africa will face extreme water scarcity, temperatures almost too hot for human survival and other consequences of global warming.
If that happens, conflicts and refugee crises far greater than those now underway are probable, said Adel Abdellatif, a senior adviser at the U.N. Development Program’s Regional Bureau for Arab States who has worked on studies about the effect of climate change on the region.
“This incredible weather shows that climate change is already taking a toll now and that it is — by far — one of the biggest challenges ever faced by this region,” he said.
These countries have grappled with remarkably warm summers in recent years, but this year has been particularly brutal.
What’s more Hugh also notes,
Parts of the United Arab Emirates and Iran experienced a heat index — a measurement that factors in humidity as well as temperature — that soared to 140 degrees in July, and Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, recorded an all-time high temperature of nearly 126 degrees. Southern Morocco’s relatively cooler climate suddenly sizzled last month, with temperatures surging to highs between 109 and 116 degrees. In May, record-breaking temperatures in Israel led to a surge in heat-related illnesses.
People are already dying from climate change. Our unwillingness to accept the fact that carbon dioxide causes the Earth to heat up has already had dire consequences. What makes matters even worse is that some people are already calling for western nations to shoot on site anyone desperately trying to get out of the Middle East. A few even seemed gleeful at the thought of dead Muslims. Kyle Kulinski recently made a video where he talked about the horrifying conditions that the Washington Post article described.
He did an excellent Job, and showed a lot of compassion for the people who are suffering in the Middle East because of this. I also like how he brought up how Bernie Sanders pointed out how serious a problem green houses gases have become long before this. I agree with both Kulinski and Sanders, we should be treating climate change much more seriously than we are. I feel even worse that Sanders can’t be our next president now. Kulinski isn’t the problem here, its the reaction some of the people commenting on his video had that was disturbing. Just look at some the disgusting comments people left there!
Let’s start out with this little gem. Some sicko who went by the name of “Sony P,” couldn’t help but mention how glad he was that the unbearable heat would commit genocide for us.
Now this guy sure sounds “welcoming” doesn’t he?
Someone going by the name of “Nah” wished for a Fourth Reich, but of course I’m certain that he will tell you that he’s “not racist”
“Dakotagu” expressed a desire for Muslims desperately fleeing the Middle East to be shot on site.
Than there was the usual talk about how Middle Eastern culture sucks, followed by a bizarre, and rather offensive Game of Thrones reference / racist joke.
“Natural Selection” at least left a few comments that weren’t bigoted or hateful and made them sound at least somewhat reasonable, whoever they are. Maybe they weren’t talking about Muslims or Arabs when they mentioned the “Sand Walkers?” Could I have misinterpreted that somehow?
Lots of talk about how we’re “civilized” and they’re not, and one guy saying that someone who he thought was a Muslim shouldn’t be allowed into their country, unless he abandoned Islam, apparently that would include circumstances such as this, where they might die if they can’t leave.
Some attempts to defend their bigotry when I got into an argument with them. By the way, in case you don’t know, I go by the name GargamelGold on youtube.
“Cornwell1888” at least came back and clarified that he didn’t want all Muslims to die, and that he would care if they did, but based on his first comment, that’s clearly not the impression any reasonable person would get.
More talk about this as if it was a “good thing.”
More glee at the thought of dead Muslims,
“Edgysphinx” unsurprisingly turns out to be a climate change denier in addition to being an anti Muslim bigot, but he still thinks it would be a good thing if they die due to the heat wave, and doesn’t think we owe “them” anything.
Oh and off course, calls for building a wall around the entire Middle East, instead of expressing sympathy for the people over there who have already died because of this.
Even more hatred and desire for dead Muslims, and how Muslims will destroy democracy and secularism if we let them in, and talk about how we don’t have to worry because Antarctica will become habitable once the Middle East is no longer habitable.
What’s happening right now due to our irresponsible behavior when it comes to pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is bad enough, but somehow people have to make it even worse. We can at least partly blame climate change deniers for what is happening in the Middle East right now, and people in the “counter Jihad,” like Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer for the horrifying way many of the people commenting on this video reacted to this tragedy.
