I vaguely recall Barry Goldwater — and how hated he was…pure fear and loathing… (and I always thought of him as a religious fanatic — reading that quote is stunning…almost the exact opposite of what I’d expect…)

Yes- they hated him because he didn’t tolerate their bullying.
