Like I said, he’s something of a dolt. His effective rate may have been 17.7% but I’m sure he paid a lot more in taxes than his secretary.
I think the point is we are supposed to have a progressive tax, where the rich pay a higher tax rate. If the secretary is left with $42,000 after taxes at 30 percent on 60K, a guy making 50 million would still be left with a tidy 35 million at the same rate. There is no question that the rich pay more in taxes, and always have.
