This story requires a hefty dose of credulity to swallow. Presumably the passport found in cleaning the house and given to the lawyer to be lost again would be the old one, not the new one.

Oops, you’re right. This explains only the non-handing over part, not the stolen claim part. This would require double loss of 2 passports.
