High schools are filled with petty tyrants. I think a lot of the lack of faith in government comes from people’s main interaction with government employees when young— not their teachers, but their jerk-ass school administrators.

With apologies to those principals who are not petty tyrants. I know mine were, though.

Mine weren’t petty tyrants but I can see how they could become so. Teens are often so irritating that it can cause administrators to not care about the messages they send or the values they instill, It becomes all about maintaining order. Allied to this is the fact that in many schools the administrators need to avoid “trouble on my watch” if they wish to retain their positions. Thus they simply look to keep a lid on things.
