The Gott of German beer stand by me, but since I've been out West I've actually developed a taste for Coors. And the cans now have that high-tech feature that tells you when they're cold enough. The mountains on the logo turn deep blue, otherwise they're gray.
Is there a rehab for this?

One point four in the rain bucket today. Nice. I truly wish more was falling to our west. Our primary reservoir is still down 30 feet...

Steel reserve? Thats bottom of the barrel.
Yup.
And after a 40, you'll be spending the night in that barrel.
Nope. I used to drink three of those 40's in a night, sometimes more. Now I'm down to just 80 ounces a night. Natural high tolerance, which is why I buy the cheap rocket fuel.

It looks like California is about to enter a week of rain... good I suppose for our parched state, but since I walk daily, miles, it will be a challenge. For us, the snow pack is "the" reservoir - let's hope this week will bring plenty of snow, first to California, then to the Rockies.

We just got out of a 26 month drought in September. All hail El Nino! But the rainfall has been spotty. Heavy here in town, less to our west which replenishes the Highland Lakes. God help folks in the Colorado River watershed and Cali if there aren't significant snow falls this year.

Agree. I walk daily, but barely a mile total, so I don't have room to complain much, but I do love when we get a solid few days of rain. I love my California, but I grew up during the drought in the 80s, and rain is a rare treat.

The Big Thing, right now, is IPAs. How much hops can you get in one bottle? I've got some brewer friends who are going to extreme lengths to hop their beers. At some point, it gets to be a bit much, eh? Same with larger brewers like Dog Fish Head. They are hopping some of their beers to the point that they can be used as antibiotics.

Hannity can go suck a tail pipe. I almost always have three kinds of mustard and four kinds of hot sauce at my disposal, and for a guy like me that's an "embarrassment of riches"
I drive a salvage title vehicle I picked up cheap, which probably wouldn't fetch a quarter of the blue book value were I to sell it. Hannity likely owns at least one luxury vehicle (more power to him, it's his money) which has rims that cost twice what I paid for my car.

Oh, and Will Durant's quote at the top of this page is timely. I'll jump on my high horse here and mention that I'm a PG, classically trained. Geology is the slow sculptor of this planet. Plates move and pressures build, often in unlikely places. Charleston, SC was bashed by a 7.3 earthquake in 1886 . Some of the strongest seismic shocks in the US occurred in Missouri, near New Madrid, when over a period of four months in 1811 and 1812, there were four separate hammers of 8.1 to 8.3.

The vomitous VDARE blog stoops to new lows (and no, I won't link to it here), in regards to Haiti.
As you could guess, they are against the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that has been enacted for Haitians.
However, they've gone even farther. They are calling for "[u]nless Patriots react, this threatens to be the start of a major invasion". The "this" referred to is this:
Operation Pierre Pan May Start at Miami Hospitals
Some of Haiti's most fragile - its children - have arrived at Miami area hospitals and for a few, Miami may become their new home.
So far, 23 patients from the earthquake have been treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital, with countless more likely to be airlifted from the island for treatment. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson has contacted all the children's hospitals in Florida and requested that they receive critically injured Haitian children in the aftermath of the earthquake.
and this:
School Districts Preparing For Possible Influx Of Haitian Students
Where Gov. Crist is getting ready for the inevitable (that relatives of Haitians living in Florida may family members come to Florida from Haiti, and that Florida should prepare for it.)
That's right, VDARE is calling this mercy airlifting of children in need of medical care, and letting some remain if needed, as well Haitians who have family members visit those relatives who live in Florida, an "invasion" and calling for "patriots" to react.
Typical of the xenophobes, but with an extra twist of ugly.

Indeed. Even in the best of times life is a struggle in Haiti.
I recall a story I was told by a close friend of his childhood. He remembered watching a lone Papaya on the tree for days, hungry, his grand-mere saying, "No, don't eat it yet, let it ripen more."
And he lived in Pétionville, attended an elite school and was well off compared to those living below in Port-au-Prince. The poverty and deprivation suffered in Haiti is unimaginable.

Wheat beers have been around a very long long time. They've been brewed with coriander and orange peel since before America was a country. Blue Moon is actually a Coors beer, so the patriot would be picking that over the Bass. ^_~

I never understood why Phelps got so much shit for smoking weed. It's not performance enhancing, and weed is less dangerous for you than booze. Nobody would blink if the guy was hoisting a Long Island, a dopplebock, or sipping a martini. 20 years from now the stuff will be legal or decriminalized and we'll look back on now with the same disdain we have for prohibition.

So you are saying in the future our Olympic athletes will be going for the Gold...But that might not mean what we think it means....
Ever since they let those long hair X-gamers into the Winter games It hasn't been the same..They not only have the standard free condoms..But they have designer ones.
In fact when you think about it the Olympic Village is a lot like an upscale after hours Club in LA..(you know the one Lindsey Lohan goes to and drunk dials her dad)

And what is it about the Village? They haven't figured out why they go through just thousands of Condoms there..

Hell, he could have hoisted three yards of beer (have you ever done a yard? it's actually a long thin glass with a big bulb at the end, a yard long, filled with beer, and it takes some motor skill to handle and equals about a sixpack) in half an hour and been hailed as a hero.

Here is Sayuri Ishikawa, a popular Japanese singer of a few decades back. Several videos of her on Youtube... several of them have her accompanied with a somewhat more traditional set of instruments; here is a mix of modern orchestra with some traditional sounding pieces mixed in.
Here vocalization has a more traditional flavor to it - definitely not contemporary J-pop. Over the last half of the 20th century it seems Japanese singers (and indeed, the whole country) have migrated from the Eastern sounds to a more Western sounding form of speech:

Wow - the latest back room deals over the health care bill are really giving away the farm. Designed to keep unions happy, they slash the projected "savings" offered by the bill by nearly half, eliminating $60 billion out of the projected $150 billion anticipated. Or, to put it another way, raising the cost of the bill by $60 billion in order to shield union members receiving "cadillac" health care plans worth over $24,000 per year.
I see Congress is also busily creating yet another AMT-style nightmare, imposing a tax on individuals making over $500k per year or married couples making over $1 million per year of 5.4 percent. A fixed dollar amount, with no provision for inflation indexing. Hmmm. Yeah. 'Cause that exact same approach worked out so well with the AMT, roping in millions of middle class taxpayers as the dollar limit lost it's value to inflation year after year and was never readjusted except by Congressional fiat.
Morons.
Meanwhile, drug companies can sense that there are deals to be made, and are grumbling about withdrawing their support unless they receive concessions for their name-brand drugs pricing.
In the end, we'll have a swell, incredibly expensive bureaucracy that does nothing whatsoever to provide better health care to anyone. Or that makes it worse.

It seems like it might be getting more and more expensive as we speak. Yesterday the NV gov came out and said they think it might be a better idea for them to just go ahead and drop out of medicaid.
[Link: www.lasvegassun.com...]
The state has estimated that the federal requirement to expand Medicaid under the bill will cost Nevada $636 million from 2014 to 2019, when the 100 percent federal subsidy in the health care reform bill expires.
Unless, of course, they get a deal like NE. Nelson seems to think every state should now get the same deal.

As the initial shock of the devastation wears off I'm guessing people are going to start asking the hard questions. Does it really make sense to rebuild a totally failed state? If Haiti is going to look exactly the same 20 years down the road after the rebuilding, is that really a good plan?

I can't help but notice that every single player who was vilified as contributing to the current problems with health care has emerged a winner under this bill - insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, doctors, all of them are going to wind up making even more money as a result of this bill, charging taxpayers more while taxpayers are forced to dig even deeper into their own pockets to cover brand new taxes. All in return for...nothing. Or less.

Any expansion of government serves to empower government. An expansion of this magnitude, which gives government control over people's very health, is staggering, unprecedented and truly frightening.
Meanwhile, control over abortion lies in the wings, with the religious right slavering over the prospect of total government control over the procedure.
I think the time has come to simplify voting decisions, and just vote against anyone who's been in office more than two terms. Period.

Climate Change tries to take out woman in her kitchen:

BRUSH, Colo. -- The mystery continues in Brush after something fell from the sky and crashed through Danelle Hagan's kitchen.Initially, most involved thought it came from a plane, likely that so-called "blue ice" that sometimes falls from commercial airliners.
.......
"And I assumed when the FAA came out to pick up the ice, along with reviewing the radar, that it would be very clear-cut. And instead, we've had about two months of the run-around at this point," said a frustrated Hagan. She believes a plane caused the damage.
Others, like renowned University of Denver astronomy professor Dr. Robert Stencel, believe it may have been a massive piece of hail known as megachryo meteorites. Stencel says it could be the product of large scale climate changes. He says high atmospheric convection could keep a chunk of ice above the clouds for a long period of time.

PHILADELPHIA -- The first criminal case involving "sexting" reached a U.S. appeals court on Friday -- a case that asks whether racy cell-phone photos of three girls amount to child pornography or child's play.A county prosecutor in northeastern Pennsylvania threatened to pursue felony charges if the girls skipped his "re-education" course on such topics as sexual predators and "what it means to be a girl in today's society."
The photos show two 12-year-olds in training bras at a sleepover and a topless 16-year-old stepping out of the shower.
.....
Either way, he said, officials are flipping the intent of child-pornography laws -- to protect children -- by going after the victims. It's unclear who first disseminated the photographs. Each girl insists she did not."Turning them into sex offenders is an odd way to protect kids," Walczak said after the oral arguments.
Former Wyoming County District Attorney George Skumanick Jr., a Republican, initiated the case in late 2008, and successor Jeffrey Mitchell, a Democrat who took office this month, shows no sign he'll change course.
"Naked pictures of children on the Internet draws predators the same way a swamp draws mosquitoes," argued lawyer Michael Donohue of Scranton, who represents the prosecutor's office. Authorities must sometimes protect children from themselves, he argued.
The prosecutor believes giving them a record and putting them on a sex offender list for the rest of their lives classifies as "protecting" them. Yeah, let's destroy their chances for federal student aid and limit their choices of where to live for the rest of their lives, all in the name of "protecting" them. What a tool.

We've been scared of teenagers since 1950's. Nothing new about it. The good news is that the judges seem to be asking the right questions, and for a rarity I actually agree entirely with the ACLU:
The judges appeared dubious of the "re-education" class, honing in on the ACLU argument that it amounts to compelled speech. Judge Thomas Ambro asked whether government should require a course on what it means to be a girl in society, as taught by a county official.

"Bong Hits for Jesus" can be taken as encouragement of illegal drug use, and encouraging people to break is something schools can sometimes take action about. The McCain yard signed and "Nobama" sticker are entirely political speech, and thus more fully covered by the First Amendment.

That's the stand the USSC took but I think protesting against laws we disagree with is a pretty fundamental concept addressed in the 1st amendment. I might agree if it had happened in the school, maybe, but not across the street.

Mine weren't petty tyrants but I can see how they could become so. Teens are often so irritating that it can cause administrators to not care about the messages they send or the values they instill, It becomes all about maintaining order. Allied to this is the fact that in many schools the administrators need to avoid "trouble on my watch" if they wish to retain their positions. Thus they simply look to keep a lid on things.

Exactly, but it seems to be getting completely out of control. I don't know how the schools have the authority to punish kids for things, like weekend parties or smoking, that have nothing to do with them. They might have a reason to keep a kid off campus who was just arrested for robbing a liquor store but other than that they might want to just stfu and keep their noses out of what should be a parental issue.

The Wall Street Journal goes to bat for Glenn Beck with a disgusting puff piece. This is the first evidence I've noticed of the WSJ's new owners putting a finger in the pie.
His politics are libertarian. "I really kind of dig this whole freedom thing," he says. "I'd like to pass it on to the kids." But he is pessimistic about the prospects for doing so: "I'm a dad, and I no longer see a way for my kids to even inherit the money that I'm making, let alone go out there, have an idea, and create it in their own lifetime."Mr. Beck blames a political system that he describes as corrupt and out of touch, a sentiment that is widely shared: "People in Washington . . . not all of them, but a lot of them, are not men and women of honor anymore," he says. "I just saw a poll today that said 25% of Americans now believe that their government officials will, for the most part, do the right thing. Only 25%. It's the lowest number ever recorded."
Mr. Beck appeals to a slice of the remaining 75% with a style that is earnest and emotional; he is known to cry on air. Although he has reported on some major news stories, including the scandals involving Acorn and former Obama aide Van Jones, he thinks of himself as a commentator and entertainer rather than a journalist. "I'm not interested in breaking news," he tells me. "I'm interested in telling the story of what's going on and then trying to figure it out."

The administrators where I went to High School here on the Cape were tough, no nonsense, and just as fair. We had a demonstration in the parking lot one day to protest the Americans taken hostage in Iran. It was a spontaneous thing, everyone left class, chanted some slogans and even burned an effigy of the Ayatollah. No one got into trouble, nothing got violent or nasty, and an hour or so later, we all went back into class. The assistant principal, a very good man, and a hard ass said he hoped we learned a bit about being citizens and was proud of the way we conducted ourselves, and added that if we ever did it again like that without any warning, he would kick our asses one by one.

Filibusters only apply to cloture votes, not to votes on passage of the actual bill. Cloture, or the decision to stop debate, has already taken place on this bill.
There are also procedural shenanigans that can be played to limit debate and end-run cloture. Reconciliation is one of them, but it's unlikely that would accomplish anything near what the Dems want to accomplish because of it's constraints. Also, there's a reason this is known as the "nuclear option"; if you think the Republicans are united in opposition now, wait until after such a move. There'll be carnage for years to come.
Besides, the Massachusetts state Dems have already said that they'll delay certifying the election until after the health care bill is passed if there's any question of it's failure.

I assure the mood of the voter is so fed up here, that that will not be tolerated. This race has, in essence become a national election, and the pressure brought to bear on Galvin and Patrick here will get things moving. They have changed election law here twice to suit the needs of the openly corrupt democratic machine here, we have elected officials here dropping like flies to federal indictments on corruption charges, 3 house speakers in a row, in fact, are convicted felons, and the fourth has been indicted. We have had state senators arrested for sexual offenses, drunken driving hit and run, corruption, our governor is a shady back roomer putting every crony he can find in min 100k plum state jobs, and on and on. I can tell you, working the phones on the Brown campaign, that he is up WAY more than 4 points if what I am hearing myself from voter cold calls is true.
We will not stand for it.
Good to hear. I'll mention, though, that the trend toward nationalizing Senate and Congressional races is not one I favor. Also, support for Brown from the TPers makes a Brown victory a mixed blessing. They will claim credit for it, and use it to build momentum, something that will be extremely damaging for the GOP over the medium to long term.

No one protested too loudly in the past when all of this took place. We have reached our limit. Thousands of phone calls will be made, and protesters will show up. Lots of them. They can only ignore us when we are willing to be ignored. The governor is running for re-election this year, and has very little chance of winning. If he does this, he has zero chance of winning, and how will it ultimately affect Obama's numbers? He and the democrats will lose Massachusetts forever. Yankees have long memories, an abundance of pride and are stubborn like you can't believe. We know we have been screwed, and we remember all of it.
Obama has gone too far, even for Massachusetts with his unprecedented power grabs, and if Sen. Brown wins this election, and Obama, Patrick and Galvin try to stop his being seated, it will be devastatingly costly to democrats for a long, long time.

I give this flounce a 6.3 out of a possible 10. Poor technical execution and haphazard structure leaves the reader with a sense of annoyance instead of solid entertainment value. Although the mandatory self pitying whine section hits some correct notes, the reader still feels the unfulfillment of the morning after a night of bad cigarettes, Boones Farm and the affections of a rotgut breathed, gap toothed barfly one picked up at 4 AM; whereas true flouncing greatness leaves one with the solid satisfaction of debauched degeneracy over a weekend at Nero's Palace.

I agree that delaying the winner's swearing-in for political reasons will be a stupid move, probably not worth the single bill it's meant to salvage. A lot of people were unhappy with the manipulation of the replacement rules, but swallowed because it was for Kennedy. Third time, however, may be the charm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is considering a plan to ask governments to impose a global consumer tax on such things as Internet activity or everyday financial transactions like paying bills online.
Such a scheme could raise "tens of billions of dollars" on behalf of the United Nations' public health arm from a broad base of consumers, which would then be used to transfer drug-making research, development and manufacturing capabilities, among other things, to the developing world.

I was referring to the increasing trend, especially in Senate races, for money and resources to be poured in from out of state interests. Obviously, only state residents are able to vote, but the impact of so much outside influence is disturbing.
I have no idea, though, how to stop it or even limit it.

Instead, he puts himself in embarrassing situations. On the day the Labor Department announced the unemployment rate was stuck at 10 percent and 85,000 jobs had been lost in December, Obama insisted he continues “to explore every avenue to accelerate the return to hiring.” So what did he propose? Tax credits totaling $2.3 billion to create “green jobs” and a second stimulus package of $150 billion (the first one, enacted 11 months ago, cost $787 billion). This is more of the same.
I just refuse to consider BO anything but a dope....where's the Stimulus?...he's not held a presser since July...I want some explanation for the money and the jobs....seems like he's getting a pass on the economy

Senators and Congressmen are supposed to represent their constituents, however. I'm not naive, and I realize this is seldom the case, but the increasing influence of out-of-state interests dilutes what constituent loyalty there may be even further.
Again, I have no idea how to limit such influence. It's just troubling to see Federalism further weakened this way.

Romney was a good governor. With the exception of the medical insurance requirement he signed into law here that is crippling the state and the states hospitals with the slashed reimbursements.
To be fair to Romney, he had to sign it, as a veto would have been easily overridden. The legislature is more one party here than in congress.. for the moment.

What Romney wanted and what he ended up signing were two different things... NPR does not take that into account and does not report that. The fines for not purchasing, for instance were not his idea, even though made to seem so in the article. The biggest difference between this plan in Mass and the federal plan is the use of existing, private health insurers, like BC/BS. And, it is STILL bankrupting the state. Costing several times more per year than originally projected.

Western diplomats say that China is now taking a harder line than Russia in opposing further UN sanctions on Tehran. One said that Beijing seemed more interested in energy security than preventing Iran from getting a nuclear bomb. China imports about 15 per cent of its oil from Iran.

California's animus toward fossil fuels has blocked further development of its considerable offshore oil resources, and its fear of nuclear power has denied the state access to nonpolluting nuclear energy. This has helped contribute to what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says is the second most business-unfriendly regulatory climate in the nation after New Jersey.

Ain't family fun? My Grand mother once claimed that she wished that she wished my Aunts and Uncles would refrain from using a certain three letter word because she hated it but couldn't remember which one it was. We were all puzzled and began to try and guess which one she meant. Finally one of my aunts said "Well shit Mom I give up!" And My grandmother said "That's the one!" We all laughed ourselves sick. Gotta love Family!

Remember what happened in Minnesota. (One of several similar cases.) Franken lost the election, but he won the "recount". Voting machines were "found", allegedly having sat in line right along with several others at a polling station, but not counted. And the machine in question went lopsidedly for Franken, so they said, although the others had not split like that.
Such claims are laughable. No one anywhere believed them. No judge involved in the case actually thought it had happened that way. Nevertheless, they ruled that it had. Phaugh. And so, by a margin contrived out of such naked fraud, Franken was declared the winner.
The only way for a Republican to win an election in a state run by Democrats is to win it by so large a margin that a recount isn't permitted.

Wow, it looks like Coakley is going down. Amazing what a difference a year makes in the political climate.
Don't worry. The Obama administration will pull this out at the last minute. I have faith that she will win.

Not counting chickens before they hatch
Obama is still very popular in Mass and he's going there tomorrow. It will all depend on the turnout. Right now Brown looks to be ahead with 'likely" voters.
If Obama going there brings out people that would normally not come out for special and off year elections, Coakley will pull it of

The AP is already calling it a "historic" win if *cough when* Coakley wins. For the evil she did as a partner in crime against the Amirault family, she should even be able to show her mug in public, let alone as a senatorial candidate.

5 Reasons to Ditch Your Digital SLR
There’s a new camera category in town. It’s EVIL, and it’s going to kick your DSLR’s ass. EVIL stands for Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens, and is our favorite acronym for cameras like the Olympus Pen, the Lumix GF1 and the Samsung NX10. These small, mirrorless, finderless cameras can fit in a pocket and outperform bulky DSLRs.

Anybody else have a broken Show Comments feature? For instance, when I'm perusing someone's old comments, and I click on one to read the whole thing, I get a white page. Or in the Spy, usually if you click on a nic, you get the comment in its own window where you can ding it, but it's giving me a white page.

It's still about the optics. How big, how sharp. I have this idea a clever digital imaging engineer could put something like that behind all those millions of excellent lenses in capable hands. In other words, ditch the DSLR? Maybe. My glass? Not From My Cold Dead Fingers.

I don't think she was. I think that she came on later (AS D.A.?) and after the two women had been released and everyone knew the conviction was invalid, she did everything in her power to make sure the man stayed in jail. And succeeded for a while.

Funny you mentioned this. A pro friend of mine has all kinds of cameras in his arsenal, so it was interesting when I saw his update: Finally able to take pics of the Monkey and not look like the paparazzi on kid duty... Lumix GF1 with 20mm F/1.7 for the win..

I’ve been on Medi Care parts A & B for six years and have been totally satisfied with the care I’ve received and the attitude and concern of the medical professionals providing the care and service.
Since I’m a Vietnam combat Vet, I receive my prescription drugs through the VA, for only an $8.00 copay.
This saves me approximately $95.00 per month; with respect to the additional Medi Care “Part D” co-payment that I would be required to pay for prescription drugs.
I’ve have been and continue to be, amused by the lady who complained…
” 'I don't want government-run health care. I don't want socialized medicine. And don't touch my Medicare,'"
re: #337 sattv4u2
“…I think we need reform, but I favor taking the things that are broken and fix that and teak a few other things, NOT overhaul the entire system.”
Absolutely sattv4u2…Entirely too complicated!
We have the model, we have the form, we have the administration, we have the distribution system; Medi Care and the Veteran’s Administration…as primary examples.
Problem is… too many golden oxen would be gored; too many piglets would be eliminated from the outrageous ability to charge the private citizen, despicable, confiscatory, exorbitant fees!
God luv yeh both…
Keep the faith...!
