We are dealing with a lot of people who are very weak in the very basics of science: what constitutes a fact, a hypothesis, a theory and how the three fit together.

Yes, it started as a hypothesis, and has been confiremd by facts from all aspects of biology, chemistry and even physics. That makes it a very well founded theory.

Intelligent Design is not a theory, it is a hypothesis, it cannot be confirmed or refuted by facts, as there is no way of measuring or quantifying a Supreme Being.
