Johnson was an asshole. He did a great thing in getting the Civil Rights Act of
1964 passed, but he also created welfare programs that failed at massive cost, and escalated American involvement in Vietnam in a fashion that showed appalling ignorance of the situation there.

This is possibly getting much uglier than it already has, and I haven't even had the stomach to follow up on it for the last month or two.

re: #10 Varek Raith
Yeah. It's bad.
However,it is still believe it or not mostly contained thank God. I've been talking to some of my friends from Argonne who went out there. There is an issue with cesium in a band to the North of the plant until it hits the mountains, however, radiation levels are near to background.
So on the one hand, when a giant natural disaster hits a reactor that is 30 years old, bad things happen. On the other hand, the containment in that 30 year old reactor was thankfully very very good. We dodged a major bullet.

Ugh, beyond meltdown. And that means, what?
This.
An accident in a nuclear reactor in which melting of the fuel core (meltdown) leads to runaway melting of nuclear fuel out of the bottom of the reactor, down through the concrete mat below, and into the earth. Also known as China syndrome.

That did not happen according to people I know from the National lab team that went to look at it. At no time did the material breach the soil. What did happen though was the inner vessel melted down and pooled into the containment vessel.

As a nation we are often seen as laid back, I believe we are apathetic, are motto is 'She'll be right mate'.
I would suggest the population is concerned about Climate Change, however the cost of living seems more important, paying bills and keeping up is getting harder for the majority.
Why now, I would suggest it is because we are real close to pricing carbon, we expect our Labor Government (left) to set a price per tonne by July.
This tax will be paid by the industries that pollute, mainly mining, and we expect the costs to be passed down to the consumer.
Because of the flow on effect to consumers, Julia Gillard (left wing Labor Prime Minister) is going to compensate those in need, families and seniors.
I think its driving the polluters wild, and also our Liberal/National coalition (right wing). We do have some of the unions fearing job losses too, however the most recent report out suggest minimal job losses are expected.
We expect the price on carbon will be between $26-35 dollars per tonne.
I would suggest the death threats are coming from those who oppose the tax, no proof just fairly logical. Vested interests.

Julia has been good for the lower and middle class, sadly the polls suggest she would not be returned if there was an election tomorrow.
I'm most disappointed in the under 30's in Australia.
They seem predominately to be on the right.
We have one of the highest cost of living in the western world.
Average house prices in Sydney are over $600,000. Its beyond the majority of the young, rents in Sydney on average are between $400-650 per week.
Even with two incomes, they are racing against inflation to save a deposit.
They blame the government in power.
We avoided the house price collapse in 2008, though prices have remain stagnant since.
Our seniors find it hard to make ends meet, they are most often right wing too.
Another issue is immigration 'boat people', we have people (muslims) coming by boat near weekly, our detention centres are full to overflowing.
Sadly we (not me) fear this immigration, and out left wing government tries to help them. Again, its a nail in the coffin for Labor (the left).
We are a racist country, Before Muslims, its was Asians, before that Italians, Greeks, you name it, all they way back to the second world war.
There stealing or jobs!!!

I'll let you in on a secret, several years of pile-ons during those AGW discussions from endless streams of assholes - some still here like stevo, made me into the short tempered fellow I am. I frequently make statements that are as obvious as the nose on someone's face, but alas, ruffle delicate feathers and then spend hours dealing with it.
It got old ages ago.
I will admit to having more than one moment of temper. There has been more than one time where I have been wrong about something or said something while angry I regretted. But truly, the continual din of hypersensitive folks on one side, and simple pedantic trolls or vain attention seekers whose feelings were hurt when facts proved them wrong, on the other, with a dusting of ignorant morons has made me suffer fools much less gladly.
This is a good blog. It brings important stories to my and many other's attention. I like and respect most of the folks here. However, there are always some who know so little about the things they whine on and on about and then expect to be treated like geniuses. After they are argued against, first nicely they just don't notice any facts given to them.
I'm not talking about opinions, I mean facts. We can both argue till blue the face about what is and is not proper, or what ice cream is better or what show is better... whatever like that. Facts are different.
It gets old.
I've seen endless losers argue about if evolution happened. Or AGW, and now I see a lot of ignorant crap here about Israel. You would think from some of the posters here that Jews have no connection to that land at all and are simply being mean for no reason against perfectly innocent Arabs, who would never hurt a fly.
On a bad day, I get angry with that crap.
On a really bad day I lose my temper when I should not.
I suppose this is a long way of saying I realize how blogging can bring the dick out of all of us - including me.

Your right, we have all the mod cons, our number of mobile phones per person is incredible. Most children have a computer, we have four in my home, mine the missus, and one for each kid, I have two more kids who have left home, so its not as bad as it was.
We like it easy.
We are horrific polluters as a nation per head of population.
We rape our land, and are a commodities based nation.
We don't seem to get that the resources will one day run out.

Our housing prices increased tremendously between 1995 - 2008, people who bought early in that period are doing real well. What I mean by that is that there new found equity allows them to borrow.
The Gold Coast is near me, prices are dear there, the place is a 'mecca' for tourism. Theres lots of money there.

I post other sites, but without expecting much... Here I can have fun and meaty discussions at the same time... I have been active in internet discussions since the late 80's when I was a usenet admin and usenet ruled. Lots has changed since. Whether it has been for the good or bad is a very meaty thread. hmmm... but not at 1:13am for me... :)
I ran a BBS way back when 2400 baud modems, though I have never been into the posting, but I have always got off on the technology. I'm a small time ISP and do webhosting.

I never mock pale people. They already suffer enough from the sunburn and such.
Except for my husband, who I get to mock because he is my beloved, and my friend Niamh who scares me because aside from freckles the woman has no melanin at all. She sunburns and then fades to pale white again. Redhead. Frightening.

Yeah I've noticed that over the last year, as I stopped having necessary reasons for exercise (used to bike to work, had to walk a lot at work). I'm sure my girlfriend would appreciate the extra exercise. Speaking of which I should join her in bed as she's probably wondering what the hell I'm doing up right now. Later all.

Johnson was an asshole. He did a great thing in getting the Civil Rights Act of
1964 passed, but he also created welfare programs that failed at massive cost, and escalated American involvement in Vietnam in a fashion that showed appalling ignorance of the situation there.
The two are not unrelated: he had to pursue the war in Vietnam in order to get conservatives to support his progressive social programs, and wound up not having the funding or the focus to do either right.
He should've known from the examples of Napoleon and Hitler that you cannot fight a two-front war...

I'm still following up on the Adam & Eve & genetics story. That the leading evangelical magazine even broached the issue is causing a disturbance in the force, so to speak. The religious community is kind of slow (wrt online things) to respond, but the religious conservatives are trying to circle the wagons, but there are holes in the defense. I think some of the younger ones, or those pastors who try to connect more with the larger society, are open to the idea that the geneticists just might be right.

We are dealing with a lot of people who are very weak in the very basics of science: what constitutes a fact, a hypothesis, a theory and how the three fit together.
"Evolution is bnot a fact, it is just a theory"
Yes, it started as a hypothesis, and has been confiremd by facts from all aspects of biology, chemistry and even physics. That makes it a very well founded theory.
Intelligent Design is not a theory, it is a hypothesis, it cannot be confirmed or refuted by facts, as there is no way of measuring or quantifying a Supreme Being.

Yeah, there's that. Condell's objections to the Park51 project, for example, are not noticeable different from any knuckle-draggers. Nor was Hitchens'. I don't like Condell, and I think Dawkins is being stupid for defending him.
However, that's part and parcel of the extremist religion part, and not the philosophical atheism bit.
I do think that in the 'politics' area, like talking about how we should deal with religion in society, Dawkins goes too far, and makes, ironically, a similar argument to those who want to torture terrorists; that we have to act as badly as our opponents in order to actually fight them.

Dawkins.
[Link: richarddawkins.net...]
Dawkins said this in defense of Condell:
He may sound extreme, but that could just reflect the extremes he is fighting against. I don't know the corresponding figures for America, but polls in Britain suggest that an alarmingly high percentage of young British Muslims support the terrorists of 9/11 and 7/7, and some 40% of Muslims want Sharia Law introduced into Britain. Disquietingly high percentages supported the death sentence against Salman Rushdie and the threats of violence against the Danish cartoonists. Even 'moderate' Muslim leaders support the principle that apostasy deserves the death penalty, even if they are too nice to carry out the sentence themselves. I think it is well arguable that Islam is the greatest man-made force for evil in the world today. Pat Condell is one of the few with the courage to say so. Before condemning his 'extremism', at least consider the possibility that it may be justified.
He's doing much of the same things those on the right do-- lumping all moderate Muslims into one pot, treating Islam as though it's monolithic, etc. I'm not going to less it pass just because he's an atheist like me.
Not to mention that Condell is in a political party that has Monkton as chief scientific adviser; that alone should be enough for Dawkins to distance himself from Condell.

Someone like Dawkins, who likes to remind people that he's an intelligent chap, should really be able to foresee the consequences of using the following sentence:
I think it is well arguable that Islam is the greatest man-made force for evil in the world today.
It isn't even helped much by the context.

re: #176 iossarian
Yeah. It just gets into an endless category discussion; if Islam is the greatest man-made force for evil, then does that mean religion, which Islam is a subset of, is? Does any Muslim, no matter how liberalized and moderate, form part of this group "Islam"? If not, why not? Etc.
I think Dawkins is by far superior to most of his detractors in terms of his tone and reasonableness, but on occasion he stakes out a position that's a bridge too far. This is one of those times.
A lot of what he says is true-- but, as this blog says, quite well:
[Link: norwegianshooter.blogspot.com...]
Free speech allows people (even Muslims!) to say what they want. You don't have to like it, but you have to defend their right to say it. Remember these are words and not actions.Blanket statements about 'moderate' Muslim leaders are wrong. Where is Dawkins' evidence? Is there some poll of 'moderate' Muslim leaders out there I don't know about? Even if there is, how the h-e-double-toothpicks did they do the poll? It's impossible to do.
Blanket statements about 'moderate' Muslim leaders are irrelevant. The issue involves one moderate Muslim leader, Imam Rauf. Please limit your criticism to him and others directly involved in the project.
Fine, make your argument that "Islam is the greatest man-made force for evil in the world today." What are you going to do about it besides public criticism? Is denying a few American Muslims their Constitutional right to religious freedom a suitable substitute for changing worldwide Islam?
Note: I like that blog quite a lot but it's considerably different from me in many ways. I recommend it but I don't share all its views.

Well ain't this a bit terrifying.
'The day after Iran's first nuclear test is a normal day'
Any mention of an Iranian nuclear weapon is taboo in the Islamic Republic, which insists that its nuclear programme is entirely for peaceful, civil purposes. So it is remarkable, to say the least, that an article has appeared on the Gerdab website, run by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, anticipating the day after Iran's first test of a nuclear warhead. Here is a translation of the text:
The day after Iran's first nuclear test is a normal day.
The day after Islamic Republic of Iran's first nuclear test will be an ordinary day for us Iranians but in the eyes of some of us there will be a new sparkle.
It's a good day. It's seven in the morning. The sun is not fully up yet but everywhere is bright. In the northern hemisphere many countries are beginning the day...
The day before, probably in central deserts of Iran, where once Americans and some other Western countries wanted to bury their nuclear waste, an underground nuclear explosion has taken place. The strength of the explosion was not so great as to cause severe damage to the region nor so weak that Iranian scientists face any problems in running their tests.
Today is a normal day like any other. Like 90% of the year, there is news about Iran, and these are the headlines which can be seen on foreign news sites:
Reuters: Iran detonated its nuclear bomb
CNN: Iran detonated nuclear bomb
Al-Jazeera: The second Islamic nuclear bomb was tested
Al-Arabia: The Shia nuclear bomb was tested
Yahoo! News: Nuclear explosion in Iran
Jerusalem Post: Mullahs obtained nuclear weapon
Washington Post: Nuclear explosion in Iran, Shock and despair in Tel Aviv
Meanwhile, the domestic media will offer many congratulations to the Hidden Imam and the Supreme Leader:
Keyhan: Iran's first nuclear bomb was tested
Jomhoori-e-eslami: Iran successfully carried out a nuclear test
Iran: By order of the president, Iran's 100% homemade nuclear bomb was tested
Ettela'at: Iran's much anticipated nuclear bomb explodedThis strange, hypothetical, article, which first appeared on April 24, hammers home again and again the message that an Iranian nuclear test will not lead to disaster.

Education Department S.W.A.T. team raids California home
A S.W.A.T. team with orders from the U.S. Department of Education broke into a California home at 6 a.m. Tuesday and reportedly roughed up a man because of a student aid issue involving his estranged wife. His wife was not present.
In 2010, the Post’s Valerie Strauss reported that the Education Department was purchasing 27 Remington Brand Model 870 police 12-gauge shotguns to replace old firearms used by Education’s Office of Inspector General, which is the law enforcement arm of the department. DoE said the guns were necessary to help enforce “waste, fraud, abuse, and other criminal activity involving Federal education funds, programs, and operations.”
Kenneth Wright says his house was raided because of his wife’s unpaid loans. One blogger speculated that we finally know what those guns are being used for.
But the Department of Education told Reason Magazine Wednesday that the SWAT team raided the house because of a criminal investigation, not a student loan.
“The Inspector General's Office does not execute search warrants for late loan payments,” the statement said. DoE did not get into the specifics of the case, but says “the offices conducts raids on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds.”
Wright says he was grabbed by the neck and handcuffed as the officers searched his house. Stockton says he was put in a police car in his underwear along with his three young children.
“They busted down my door for this. It wasn’t even me,” Wright told the local news station News 10. “All I want is an apology for me and my kids and for them to get me a new door.”
Wright has no previous criminal record, according to News 10.
The U.S. Department of Education has a SWAT team? I didn't know that.

My wife prefers non-traditional looks to her jewelry. Specifically, she's into intricately designed bands for rings. That gave me a dickens of a time trying to find an engagement ring for her, because I knew she was very particular about the band and how detailed it was. I managed to hit a home run on that score, though, thanks to the power of the Internet.

Breitbart Charges Huma Pregnancy a 'PR Attempt'
ANDREW BREITBART: Well, this information was selectively put out there by their camp, and I think that it's probably a PR attempt to try and inject her into it because when you hear that -- when you hear Huma, you are sympathetic towards her. When you hear of Huma and pregnancy, you start to feel a level of sympathy.
And so I -- I -- my belief is that this is a ploy to make people not want to continue to report about what type of behavior he's been involved with. You know, where there's smoke, there's fire.

[Link: www.kitco.com...] - those charts suggest that gold prices have steadily risen over the past decade, and that could be the sign of a bubble - or that demand keeps increasing because there are few other safe havens to stash cash that provide quality ROR.
Meanwhile, reports today are indicating that inflation isn't the top concern among economists. It's stagflation. Wages are flat, meaning that higher costs of living are eating into limited wages, causing people to cannibalize their wages/savings to pay for higher costs rather than new spending.

A peace-loving representative of Hamas discusses how Hamas views peace...
Khaled al-Qoddoumi said Hamas would not pay any attention to the negative propaganda of the western media that Hamas should or would withdraw from the path of resistance.
In a first interview with Iranian media after arriving in Tehran, Qoddoumi, who replaced Osama abd al-Mo’ti early in May, said Israel has no belief in living alongside the Palestinian nation.
The senior Hamas member refuted any option of compromise with Israel and underlined resistance as the only way of struggling with the occupiers and restoring the rights of the Palestinian nation. He predicted that one day, the Quds would return to the lap of the world of Islam.
Asked about the status and position of resistance in Palestine and its destiny, the Hamas envoy said the Palestinian resistant people has stood fast to the way of resistance while the form of such resistance have varied from stone throwing to military confrontation to missile firing to popular demonstrations. “Today, the nation has kept the path alongside the Arab world, Muslims and all free people of the world,” he added.
Asked whether the Palestinian nation considers the option of compromise with Israel as legitimate, he said the Palestinian nation sees no reason to approve the option as it sees compromise as a futile and useless way. “The Israeli side has never sought peace. They have no belief in living alongside the Palestinian nation or other Muslim nations. The Zionist regime is a cancer and cancer must be uprooted,” he said.
Al-Qoddoumi said Hamas was more powerful than ever and has acquired a stronger faith in the path of resistance which guarantees the restoration of the rights of the Palestinian nation.

Well, granted. I guess what I mean is, people who use that sort of emotional ploy to argue for their cause. In reality, the squalor of their living conditions is inflicted upon them by their leaders and by their Arab neighbors; Israel was perfectly willing to take them in, but they refused.
265 | Obdicut Thu, Jun 9, 2011 7:38:18am |
re: #261 thedopefishlives
Well, no. The pickle is not solely of their own making. The situation there is not mainly the result of the actual Palestinians, but the entire Mid-Eastern Mulsim world, who all find having the Palestinians around useful as a political pawn. The anti-semitic propaganda is pumped out by nations like Yemen and Saudi Arabia, countries we're on perfectly friendly terms with.
I have sympathy for any child born among the Palestinians, growing up hearing the propaganda of hate, growing up fed lies and propaganda every day. It is hard to shake off the hate that's taught in ones youth-- it's even harder when there's an active, violent conflict.
That's one reason Hamas never really respects a ceasefire-- they need to keep the hatred alive, and they need to have Israel defend itself so that they can claim they're being attacked.
I get aggravated when people talk about the Israel-Palestine conflict. There isn't such a thing. It's Israel vs. Muslim Middle East conflict.
266 | lawhawk Thu, Jun 9, 2011 7:38:50am |
re: #261 thedopefishlives
Not just of their own making. They've been repeatedly screwed by their so-called brothers and the regimes in power in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and the rest of the ME. Those regimes have kept the Palestinians in camps, radicalized them, exploited them (both political and as cheap labor), and otherwise treated them as non-citizens even though most in those camps have lived all their lives in those camps and never actually were born or lived in territories that now comprise Israel or the territories.
Israel is actually the least of the Palestinians' problems. Israelis would have no problem with a peace deal if there was a true peace with a 2-state solution. Problem is that the Palestinians themselves via Hamas and Fatah (now comprising the Palestinian Authority) reject a 2-state solution and seek the liberation of all Palestine (referring to Israel's creation as the naqba for example). Problem is that the foreign countries refuse to grant citizenship to those Palestinians in the camps even though they were born decades after Israel's creation. Israel's enemies in the region perpetuate the hatred and further radicalize the Palestinians and fund the terror campaigns (using Hizbullah, Hamas, and PIJ as proxies).

Ozzie Guillen takes issue with arch-enemy Sean Penn
Sean Penn probably isn't going to be a guest of Ozzie Guillen at a Chicago White Sox game anytime soon.
Well, maybe he will if the two agree to meet up in Guillen's native Venezuela.
What beef does Guillen have with Penn? The actor continues to defend Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Back in March, Penn appeared on "Real Time with Bill Maher" to criticize the media for going along with the U.S. government's labeling of Chavez as a dictator. Guillen fired off a response on Twitter, saying it was easy for a well-paid celebrity who doesn't live in Venezuela to stick up for Chavez.
If Penn got Guillen's message, it apparently didn't leave an impression. This week, he wrote an editorial for the Huffington Post calling for lifting economic sanctions on Venezuela. Penn also once again criticized the U.S. government for portraying Chavez as a dictator, rather than a democratically elected leader.
Upon learning of Penn's post, Guillen once again ripped his ideological nemesis on Twitter. "Sean penn," he posted, "if you love venezuela please move to venezuela for a year." Guillen put a vitriolic cherry on top by challenging Penn to rent property in one of the country's impoverished cities and see how long he'd last. Oh, and to emphasize the point, as only Ozzie can, he called Penn a clown.
Ha ha ha ha! Go Ozzie!

Fox News: Human Rights group oppressing conservative chicks.....
Miss USA Contestants 'Scared to Death' About Evolution, Nudity Questions
“The pageant officials are intimidating contestants into answering questions a certain way that are deemed ‘politically correct’ while discriminating against their own belief and opinions,” says publicist Angie Meyer, who has worked with the Miss USA organization. “The Miss USA organization is choosing topics that are not only controversial, but intimidating.”
Another factor that could influence how contestants answer is the makeup of the crowd.
MUO has given away a significant amount of free tickets to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to attend the live telecast. HRC are prominent champions for the legalization of gay marriage, the very topic that sparked the Prejean pandemonium two years ago.
The organization happens to be holding its leadership summit in Las Vegas on the same weekend, a source told Pop Tarts.
According to Meyer, the presence of a large contingent of HRC members in the crowd alone could be intimidating for the more conservative contestants if a question similar Prejean's is raised.
Miss Maine USA’s Executive Director Mackenzie Davis disagrees, saying that the HRC's attendance is not in any way unfair as “Miss USA is a spokesperson for the nation, and should not be intimidated by any organization.”

Dawkins said this in defense of Condell:
He's doing much of the same things those on the right do-- lumping all moderate Muslims into one pot, treating Islam as though it's monolithic, etc. I'm not going to less it pass just because he's an atheist like me.
Not to mention that Condell is in a political party that has Monkton as chief scientific adviser; that alone should be enough for Dawkins to distance himself from Condell.
It can be a fine line to tread, for an atheist, to avoid being called a bigot, and you have to choose your words very carefully. In the case of that particular quote of Dawkins, you are correct to say that he went too far. He should have said that
some 'moderate' Muslim leaders support the principle that apostasy deserves the death penalty
. I'm sure that Dawkins, if asked to clarify, would have accepted the fact that very many genuinely moderate muslims do exist, while there are some who have gotten a pass as 'moderate' while harbouring extreme views. As written though, his statement reads too much like the kind of "there is no such thing as a moderate muslim" tripe that wingnuts like to spout.
As for Condell, he seems more and more a champion of Daily Mail values than anything else these days.

He does. And there is a rational ground: Being openly antisemitic puts you too far into the fringe to be a profitable enterprise without going full Aryan Nation, with your own compound and all. I also think his wife's family is partially jewish, so there might be some personal reasons for the rejection of outright antisemitism. It might also have to do with being raised by Conservatives (his father is a John-Birch-Society member, I believe) and their strange oscillation between Anti-Semitism, Philo-Semitism and Christian Zionism. Last but not least, I think he's just an equal-opportunity anti-elitist. That's pretty much his whole ideology: Any elite is evil.

I've always been weirded out by people's harshness towards Dawkins. I think they confuse two things: his contempt for certain kinds of extremist religion, like when he argued with that imam (though most Westerners probably loved that), and his philosophical atheism.
I think a lot of the harshness is motivated not because of his atheism or his dislike of extremist religion or even his dislike of religion in general but because he seems to write about subjects of religion – especially sociology of religion and theology – a lot of people from the academic professions have charged him to be uneducated about while pretending otherwise. At least that's the charge I often read. I haven't bothered with Dawkins myself.

Liars and bullshitters are, Frankfurt says, both misrepresenting themselves. But while the liar is trying to lead us away from what s/he knows to be the truth, the bullshitter doesn't care about truth, because bullshitters don't believe in "truth." When we're bullshitting, we're trafficking in the world of "possibilities" not in the world of "realities."It's possible, for example, that "people are out most important asset," right? Who can disprove that, "we're committed to superior customer service?" These are, as Frankfurt puts it:
...assertions that purport to describe the way things are, but that cannot be anything but bullshit.I love Frankfurt's quote of Arthur Simpson's advise to his young son:
Never tell a lie when you can bullshit your way through.
What matters in bullshit is that it be "sincere," not that it be "correct"; the triumph of form over content.

As I said, I haven't really bothered with Dawkins. What I've glimpsed doesn't really look interesting, and I doubt his stuff will enter the canon of philosophy of religion.

oh, gawd, I hope so i hope I hope I hope I hope.
This would be SUCH a bad move. The money that OGB has managed to accrue is not state fund money, it's EMPLOYEE-PAID PREMIUMS. It's NOT THE STATE'S MONEY.
This agency is dedicated to providing the best possible choices and coverage for state employees, their dependents, teachers, retirees, a whole host of people are covered by this program. They've managed to accrue a surplus, which means our premiums won't be going up until they HAVE to. They just dropped the lifetime maximum on benefits. They have provided excellent service to employees.
The former director was fired a couple of months ago; his governor-chosen replacement resigned a couple of days ago. I'm guessing he thought it would be an easy job and he found out it wasn't? pfft.

I mean, does anybody here think that a private company would do what this agency is doing, holding that surplus in reserve for future use for the benefit of covered employees? I have to laugh out loud at the thought -

The political activist and TV host even suggested that it would be a better life for women in warring countries as the might die of starvation.Mutairi claimed: 'There was no shame in it and it is not haram' (forbidden) under Islamic Sharia law.'
[...]
She suggested shopping for prisoners of war so as to protect Kuwaiti men from being tempted to commit adultery or being seduced by other women's beauty.
'For example, in the Chechnyan war, surely there are female Russian captives,' she said.
'So go and buy those and sell them here in Kuwait. Better than to have our men engage in forbidden sexual relations.'

Digging for clues to the past: studying climate change in the Meadowlands.
Meadowlands Commission researchers will study samples recently plucked from the reedy marshes along the Hackensack River for evidence of catastrophic events, such as a tsunami or severe drought, which could help planning officials. They also hope to learn how much carbon the marshes have been capturing out of the air and storing in vegetation, to better understand the role wetlands play in reducing the impact of carbon emissions.
"Scientists would like to determine which kinds of plants are best at sequestering carbon and how the amounts varied in the past," said paleoclimatologist Dorothy Peteet at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, who will help the Meadowlands team. "If the weather was hotter or drier, did plants sequester more or less carbon? The million-dollar question is how fast plants can sequester carbon."
Researchers will also measure the presence of man-made pesticide residue in the plant material.
"There's so much science here, you have to break it into projects," said Cyndi Steiner, a Rutgers University graduate student who will work with Peteet on the samples.
The Meadowlands is one of the great marshes in the US, and much of it was turned into dumps for much of the past 200 years. Only within the past few decades have people realized its true value and importance. Scientists have found all manner of bacteria growing there that could have significant commercial value - for environmental remediation for example, and now scientists are looking at the region for how marshes take up carbon, whether the region experienced tsunamis or significant storm surges in the past (that could pose a direct threat to the NYC metro region since the Meadowlands are largely sheltered from a direct hit by an Atlantic tsunami or significant storm surges). Lots of interesting science going on there... and it's also on the Atlantic flyway so its also great for birding.

re: #314 Sergey Romanov
There's a Kuwaiti Times article predating the Daily Mail that reports substantially the same thing.
This woman is a piece of work:
The activist, Salwa Al-Mutairi, suggested apparently seriously in a video broadcast online that she had been informed by some clerics that affluent Muslim men who fear being seduced or tempted into immoral behavior by the beauty of their female servants, or even of those servants 'casting spells' on them, would be better to purchase women from an 'enslaved maid' agency for sexual purposes. She suggested that special offices could be set up to provide concubines in the same way as domestic staff recruitment agencies currently provide housemaids.
We want our youth to be protected from adultery," said Al-Mutairi, suggesting that these maids could be brought as prisoners of war in war-stricken nations like Chechnya to be sold on later to devout merchants.

Our old pal zombie (via Instapundit)
ZOMBIE: How A Teachers’ Rally Made Me Anti-Education.
I’ve always considered myself an ardent advocate for education. But a recent rally staged by teachers and students in favor of school funding forced me to reluctantly acknowledge an awful truth: We have to destroy education in order to save it. Let me explain how I came to this miserable conclusion.”
....
The content of the rally itself revealed that increasing school funding is just a component of a larger leftist agenda — school funding is being used as a lever to penalize the rich, increase power for unions, and so forth.

So, I'm thinking of switching up my booze for this evening. Gin had long been my fuel of choice, but, frankly, it makes me mean (well, meaner than I am without gin, anyway). I'd been downing bourbon with great regularity (and gusto, let me add), but I find it's making me maudlin, and leading to internal monologues that sound far too much like Quentin's father explaining to him about his grandfather's pocket watch and the whole Sutpen deal, so I'm thinking to phase it out.
I used to guzzle brandy with great frequency - hell, I used to carry a flask of it on me more or less constantly (well, that or B&B) when I lived up North. So, maybe brandy tonight.
I'm in Texas, so you might say "hey, why not tequila?" Well, I just can't seem to "get" that particular liquor - something about it just doesn't work for me.
Any other suggestions?
Remember, your fellow lizards will have to deal with the effects, so choose wisely.

I'm having some difficulty right now; the Louisiana Group Benefits thing has me so damned steamed I can't see straight.
They have an agency that has managed to take care of its business so carefully and frugally that it accumulated a SURPLUS, and so what does Jindal do?
He fires the head of the agency, appoints his own guy who has now resigned because Jindal is not forthcoming with information EVEN TO HIS OWN APPOINTEE, and proposes selling the agency (and its surplus) to a private company that will pay the state the $500 million surplus plus another $1 billion (is the figure I saw) for the operations. The $500 million is not the state's money. It's the money of employees and retirees who are in the OGB program. So the state gets it back? It should stay right where it is, as a cushion for the future benefit of state employees who paid the premiums. Gah. Sorry I went on a rant there . . .
