I don’t get him. He’s the Shah’s son, and he calls himself “heir to the throne of Iran.” Yet he positions himself as a pro-democracy activist.

I have a handful of Iranian friends, people who have emigrated to America, love the West, and hate the mullahs so much that they nearly spit when they refer to them. But even they also hated the Shah, and they’re angry at the U.S. for supporting him.

My father’s family are Persian Jews. When I visited them in Israel, I was surprised to see a framed photo of the Shah on their living room wall. This was true for almost all the homes I visited.
