Well, if you’re asking from a purely scientific basis, then it would appear that consciousness appeared following the development of the species. If you’re asking from a theological perspective, then Consciousness formed the Whole, a part of which (Man) is itself a participant in consciousness.

The two understandings are not mutually exclusive, as both are true, but the reconciliation of these two can be a subtle and challenging task. Because truth does not contradict truth, and because we know the discoveries of science and reason to be true, to the extent that these appear to contradict revelation, it must be due to our failure to understand revelation properly. This is because whereas science and reason speak clearly and unambiguously, revelation and prophecy speak by way of image and metaphor. The great difficulty is in the hermeneutics of prophecy.
