Yes, modern building standards help, but even then one never knows exactly how the local surface will react.
E.g., from today:
At a Sheraton hotel in downtown San Diego, the floor cracked opened and prevented the front doors from shutting. Officials ordered all guests and staff from the building, pending an inspection from structural engineers.
Concrete bends and flexes… to a point, then it cracks open.
In the rural part of Mexico at the epicenter I wonder how many homes are just made out of brick and mortar - not the A-frame wood standard used here?
