Congress has been playing games with the copyright duration for decades. And it’s gotten to the point where they’ve got a Mickey Mouse rule (essentially written to protect Disney’s rights to Mickey from going into the public domain).

I get that patents for drugs might need special durations, in part because of the time to pass through FDA approval and the safety gauntlet, but copyright is a different breed - that life of the author plus X should be sufficient and that additional extensions actually reduce who can use the IP openly. Allow the author and successor/owners to maximize their profits for a period of time, and let it pass into the public domain.
