I heard this on the radio today headed to town.

Cherokee Nation Names First Delegate To Congress (Goes to NPR)

The treaty which resulted in the “Trail of Tears” also has a clause that allows the Cherokee Nation to appoint a non-voting delegate to the US House of Representatives.

Until now they have never done so. Former Obama appointee Kimberly Teehee was appointed by the Cherokee Nation to the delegate position.

The treaty language is very clear that if the Cherokee Nation appoints a delegate, that delegate “shall be seated” in the US House.

As a delegate in Congress who can attend committee meetings, Teehee would have the opportunity to advocate not just for the Cherokee Nation, but for all tribes, said Lindsay Robertson, who teaches federal Indian law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

Congress has to figure out how to seat her, but with the Democrats in the majority she will be seated. Let’s see how many Republicans try to oppose it while insisting they aren’t racists.
